A court has heard how a 16-year-old boy accused of fatally stabbing

:00:00.:00:13.

a teenager at an Aberdeen school wiped blood off his hands

:00:14.:00:16.

Bailey Gwynne died after being stabbed at the school in October.

:00:17.:00:21.

The accused, who can't be identified for legal

:00:22.:00:23.

Steven Duff reports from the High Court in Aberdeen.

:00:24.:00:31.

An emotional day for the family of Bailey Gwynne as they heard more

:00:32.:00:35.

details of the battle to save the 16-year-old's life.

:00:36.:00:40.

The trial has already heard how he died after suffering a single

:00:41.:00:43.

Paramedic Gary Gillespie told how he found Bailey lying

:00:44.:00:49.

He described him as the palest person he had ever seen.

:00:50.:01:08.

Mr Gillespie said as well as looking very pale,

:01:09.:01:10.

He had a wound and signs of a catastrophic loss of blood.

:01:11.:01:16.

Resuscitation attempts continued until they reached

:01:17.:01:19.

Asked if there was anything more that could have been done,

:01:20.:01:26.

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the 16-year-old boy

:01:27.:01:31.

who was accused of murdering Bailey Gwynne, whom we cannot name

:01:32.:01:34.

for legal reasons, was taken to the headteacher's office.

:01:35.:01:36.

Soon, two police officers arrived and the accused was handcuffed.

:01:37.:01:46.

The accused is reported to have asked if he was dead.

:01:47.:01:49.

He said it was just a moment of anger.

:01:50.:01:59.

The deputy headteacher was with the accused after the stabbing.

:02:00.:02:11.

A number of child witnesses told they saw the accused with a knife

:02:12.:02:16.

One friend of the accused said he didn't believe he was the type

:02:17.:02:21.

of person to engage in violent activity with weapons.

:02:22.:02:23.

A difficult day of evidence for Bailey Gwynne's family.

:02:24.:02:25.

The accused denies murder and other charges of possessing weapons.

:02:26.:02:33.

The First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, wants to increase council tax

:02:34.:02:37.

for those in the most expensive houses if the SNP wins the Holyrood

:02:38.:02:40.

The Conservatives said it was right to keep the council tax.

:02:41.:02:46.

But Labour said the SNP was breaking a promise to scrap it.

:02:47.:02:50.

Here's our political correspondent, Glenn Campbell.

:02:51.:02:56.

Nicola Sturgeon's proposed changes to council tax that should bring

:02:57.:03:01.

in an extra ?100 million a year for schools.

:03:02.:03:04.

Those living in the highest value houses in Scotland will pay more.

:03:05.:03:07.

There will be exemptions for those on low incomes,

:03:08.:03:31.

We are bringing changes to council tax in, asking those who live

:03:32.:03:39.

in more expensive houses to pay more.

:03:40.:03:42.

The vast majority of people will not pay any more as a result of these

:03:43.:03:45.

changes, and those with the lowest incomes will pay less.

:03:46.:03:52.

There was a time when the SNP wanted to abolish council tax rather

:03:53.:03:55.

But, after nine years in power, they have decided to keep it

:03:56.:04:03.

after all and to try and make it a bit fairer.

:04:04.:04:12.

I think we accept the principle that those in large properties

:04:13.:04:15.

But we have to be careful that we are not making more

:04:16.:04:20.

expensive properties more unaffordable.

:04:21.:04:21.

Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP have won not one but two elections

:04:22.:04:24.

on a promise to abolish the council tax.

:04:25.:04:26.

The only thing they have abolished is the council tax freeze.

:04:27.:04:34.

If the SNP avoids rejection at the election, the freeze

:04:35.:04:36.

That would let councils raise more by putting up tax

:04:37.:04:47.

Any increases would be capped at 3% by the Scottish Government.

:04:48.:04:51.

The SNP seem more determined to take control away from local

:04:52.:04:54.

They think they know best in this place over my shoulder.

:04:55.:05:00.

I think local communities know better.

:05:01.:05:02.

We believe in autonomy and strengthening local democracy.

:05:03.:05:14.

We believe that means giving the powers to raise money

:05:15.:05:16.

In future, councils may be able to tax derelict

:05:17.:05:26.

A reformed council tax that makes those in bigger houses pay a bit

:05:27.:05:31.

more is the centrepiece of the SNP's plan.

:05:32.:05:37.

The SNP plan to reform council tax isn't as radical as some

:05:38.:05:40.

Back in 2007, the party planned to replace the tax entirely,

:05:41.:05:43.

And last year, a major report examined several alternatives.

:05:44.:05:50.

As our local Government correspondent, Jamie McIvor reports,

:05:51.:05:53.

those who'd wanted big changes are disappointed.

:05:54.:06:07.

Council tax helps pay for all sorts of services such as this gym.

:06:08.:06:10.

Whether it should be reformed or replaced has exercised

:06:11.:06:13.

The SNP is proposing something well short of the radical change that

:06:14.:06:17.

The body that represents most councils isn't happy.

:06:18.:06:22.

I am really surprised there has been so little announced.

:06:23.:06:26.

From the point of view of adjusting the bands, it is tinkering

:06:27.:06:29.

If it is to deliver equality, that could have been done a number

:06:30.:06:41.

Last year, a Commission set up by the Government and Cosla studied

:06:42.:06:45.

The recommendations were not binding but some are still surprised

:06:46.:06:57.

that the changes have not been bolder.

:06:58.:06:59.

It did a good job, collected vast amounts of information and evidence,

:07:00.:07:02.

consulted with people around Scotland, and concluded that,

:07:03.:07:09.

although they didn't come up with a specific,

:07:10.:07:12.

What we have is the council tax with a few bells and whistles on it.

:07:13.:07:20.

The SNP says the money raised will go on education,

:07:21.:07:24.

maybe helping the children here when they are older.

:07:25.:07:26.

Most people will not pay significantly more council tax under

:07:27.:07:28.

The bigger impact will be on those who live in more

:07:29.:07:32.

Any pressure on the budget will be difficult.

:07:33.:07:39.

At the same time, we appreciate that the councils have been

:07:40.:07:41.

I don't have a problem paying tax, but I think that everything

:07:42.:07:47.

When it comes to big change, they say, no pain, no gain.

:07:48.:07:56.

Is reforming the council tax an easy option or is it the better one?

:07:57.:08:00.

Voters get their say in May's elections.

:08:01.:08:05.

UK measures to combat terrorism make it more difficult for Muslim leaders

:08:06.:08:12.

to tackle extremism in their communities.

:08:13.:08:15.

That's according to the Muslim Council of Scotland.

:08:16.:08:17.

It says the measures prevent people speaking openly and honestly

:08:18.:08:19.

At an event in Glasgow today, the organisation discussed

:08:20.:08:24.

the threat posed by violent extremism and how to engage

:08:25.:08:26.

To football, and in the Scottish Premiership tonight,

:08:27.:08:32.

Aberdeen closed to gap to Celtic at the top of the league

:08:33.:08:34.

Celtic were left frustrated after Ronny Deila's side drew 0-0

:08:35.:08:39.

Aberdeen defeated Dundee United 1-0 at Tannadice after a header by Simon

:08:40.:08:44.

In the other Premiership game, Partick Thistle defeated

:08:45.:08:48.

Callum Booth and Steven Lawless put the away side in front,

:08:49.:08:54.

before Chris Kane pulled a goal back for the Saints.

:08:55.:09:00.

Andy Murray says parenthood has been great - and hopes it can

:09:01.:09:03.

have a beneficial impact on his sporting career.

:09:04.:09:07.

The world number two returns to action in the next few days,

:09:08.:09:10.

following the birth of his daughter Sophia last month.

:09:11.:09:14.

He'll play for Team GB against Japan in the Davis Cup but it seems

:09:15.:09:18.

whatever happens, he won't lose any sleep over the outcome.

:09:19.:09:20.

He looks the same but since we last saw him on court, Andy Murray has

:09:21.:09:29.

changed a little, he is now a father.

:09:30.:09:31.

I hope that I can continue to train hard and be motivated

:09:32.:09:34.

I hope it has a positive impact but if not, that is fine, as well.

:09:35.:09:42.

Fatherhood had an impact on the 1980s star, John McEnroe.

:09:43.:09:46.

He did not win another grand slam after becoming a dad.

:09:47.:09:49.

Perhaps that was down to sleep deprivation,

:09:50.:09:52.

which usually accompanies being a parent.

:09:53.:09:58.

These researchers at Stirling University are exploring

:09:59.:10:00.

the impact of a lack of sleep on sporting performance.

:10:01.:10:03.

There has also been a recent study, a few years ago, that says it

:10:04.:10:12.

They did a study looking at tennis players, they sleep restricted them,

:10:13.:10:20.

they found that the tennis serve was not as accurate

:10:21.:10:22.

Nothing wrong with Stuart Hogg's reactions against Italy

:10:23.:10:28.

Look at the deftness of touch from to set up

:10:29.:10:42.

I think that I have improved a little, you do not want to let

:10:43.:10:51.

I play for him as much as anyone else.

:10:52.:10:58.

It is always thinking, what would Archie think?

:10:59.:11:00.

I think I have become a little more professional.

:11:01.:11:02.

That sporting father has some advice for this one,

:11:03.:11:05.

where getting a good nights sleep is concerned.

:11:06.:11:06.

If you smell a dirty nappy, pass it to the missus!

:11:07.:11:09.

Perhaps that is a strategy employed by Novak Djokovic.

:11:10.:11:11.

The best tennis player in the world has won four of 11 grand slam titles

:11:12.:11:15.

Here is the weather. They cold a few days coming up. Tonight mainly dry

:11:16.:11:37.

apart from a few showers. The Met office has a yellow be where warning

:11:38.:11:45.

for widespread ice away from coastal areas and in the far north. One or

:11:46.:11:51.

two showers in the East but predominantly dry. Cold first thing.

:11:52.:12:01.

Wintry showers over higher ground in the north. Brisk north winds.

:12:02.:12:12.

Elsewhere a lot of dry weather with spells of sunshine. Perhaps more

:12:13.:12:15.

cloud in Eastern areas in the afternoon. Rain pushing into

:12:16.:12:20.

Northern Ireland shooting the day and into south-west England. If you

:12:21.:12:29.

showers clinging to Eastern coastal areas. One or two showers clinging

:12:30.:12:38.

to Eastern extremities. Elsewhere for the afternoon are lot of dry

:12:39.:12:45.

weather. Lighter winds. Further wintry showers across northern

:12:46.:12:50.

Scotland. This band of rain clips the south-west of tomorrow evening.

:12:51.:12:56.

Fairly widespread ice risk tomorrow night. Winds swing into the

:12:57.:13:03.

Fairly widespread ice risk tomorrow north-east. Wintry showers for the

:13:04.:13:06.

north at the weekend. Brisk winds and coastal areas. Some went to

:13:07.:13:17.

showers. Best of the sunshine and the West.

:13:18.:13:18.

Our next update is during Breakfast at 6.25 tomorrow morning.

:13:19.:13:24.

But from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around

:13:25.:13:28.
