The teenager who killed Cults Academy pupil

Bailey Gwynne has been sentenced to nine years in custody.

He'll be supervised for a further two years after his release.

He was their sweet boy, and today, just as they have each and every day

of the trial, the family of Bailey Gwynne made the difficult trip to

court. Shielded by tinted glass, his identity protected on account of his

age, the 16-year-old killer was taken to a different entrance to be

sentenced. The 16-year-old was, he said, a naive and immaturity major

because he thought carrying a knife said, a naive and immaturity major

years in custody with a further two years supervision upon release. It

was one lunchtime last October that an ordinary school day at Cults

Academy was turned upside down. An argument about a biscuit was the

trigger for a fight that lasted just a few seconds. Long enough for

Bailey Gwynne's killer to inflict a fatal stab wound to the heart, using

a knife he had bought on the Internet. The 16-year-old denied

murder, but last month the trial in Aberdeen ended with a jury finding

him guilty of the lesser charge of culpable homicide. Lady Stacey told

the 16-year-old that if he had not chosen to take a knife to school

that day, the exchange of insults would have, at worst, led to a fist

fight. No sentence, she said, could lessen the grief of Bailey Gwynne's

family. For them, the Court ordeal was now over. Questions remain. The

findings of an independent review into the circumstances surrounding

Bailey Gwynne's killing are expected to be published in September.

Equal rights campaigners in Scotland have welcomed the announcement

of a review of gender recognition law for trans-gender people.

They say it could, for the first time, allow people to change

But the move has been described by opponents as "insanity".

neither male or female, and that made grown-up a confusing time. We

live in a world that tells us those are the only two options so for a

long time I didn't realise there was another way that I could be

explained who I was. So, in some ways, it was quite restrictive for

me, but as I became older and more aware of these kinds of issues and

spent time the other non-binary people I became more comfortable and

happy with the way I am. There is legislation in place to detect the

rights of transgender people. Campaigners argue that is outdated.

They have welcomed a pledge by the S NPT review the way things stand, and

that is backed by all Scotland's political parties. It is hoped that

trans-people in future will be able to legally change gender themselves

in their own terms. It is argued that is far better than what

currently happens. At the moment you're not required to have surgery

to change your legal gender but you have to have is detailed psychiatric

report about your sexual preferences and intrusive personal things that

nobody would want to have two sent to a legal tribunal to puzzle over

undecided whether you make the grade of masculinity or femininity.

Despite recognition that change is needed some argue that the proposed

reforms go with too far. We should be offering support at a don't think

of their sentence for good behaviour. That is what has happened

here in the case of Michaela McCollum. Her lawyers say that she

should be able to return to Northern Ireland. She's now on parole in

Peru. There will be a further hearing about that. It was assumed

that Melissa Reid would be eligible for the same thing. We don't know if

she has applied for that. We know that she has asked the Scottish

Prison Service to allow work to serve the rest of her sentence in

Scotland. The Scottish Prison Service has granted that they

allowed that in January 2015, but ultimately, that there's something

for the per ruby and authorities, and we have not had an up date from

Good evening. It was pretty wet across some parts today, but rain is

clearing and there was some brightness just before dusk.

Tonight, rain continues to clear South, courtesy of this weather

front pushing into the North of England and Wales as well, but it

returns tomorrow. This is how Saturday starts across Scotland.

Pretty cloudy, reasonably dry, with that weather front edging into the

borders, Dumfries and Galloway. Further north, dry and bright with

some showers for the north-west coast. The rain will continue to

track northwards. You can see on the bigger picture, it is a dividing

line between Sunni, pleasant conditions down south, in the mid

teens, and dry to the far north, but where that wet, cloudy weather

remains it will feel rather cool. And it is cloudy and down across a

good part of central and southern Scotland. Certainly through the

central belt at this point. Around Dundee and Perth, it should be

driver some light showers. The best of any shuns -- Sunshine around the

Moray Firth and the far north. Plenty of sunshine through the

course of the day for Orkney and Shetland with one or two like

showers. In the evening the rain continues to move northwards

reaching Aberdeen, Inverness and Stornoway by the end of the night.
