The leaders of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, which is mourning Glasgow | :00:09. | :00:12.
shopkeeper Asad Shah, has condemned yesterday's statement | :00:13. | :00:13.
Community leaders have called on all religious leaders | :00:14. | :00:18.
Asad Shah was a much loved local shopkeeper who had served people | :00:19. | :00:30.
in the Shawlands area of Glasgow for many years. | :00:31. | :00:36.
His death has been widely mourned and a statement issued yesterday by, | :00:37. | :00:39.
the man appearing in court charged with his murder, | :00:40. | :00:41.
claiming Mr Shah had disrespected the prophet, has deeply troubled | :00:42. | :00:44.
This is deeply disturbing, it sets an extremely | :00:45. | :00:49.
dangerous precedent, as it justifies the killing | :00:50. | :00:52.
of anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, whom an extremist considers having | :00:53. | :00:54.
Ahmadiyyas, they follow the Prophet Muhammad, | :00:55. | :01:05.
So there is no way that an Ahmadiyya would cause | :01:06. | :01:12.
Last week, religious leaders came together | :01:13. | :01:17.
Today they are being asked to publicly condemn the statement | :01:18. | :01:23.
This is the stage where we expect all imams to come out to condemn it, | :01:24. | :01:35.
so that we know that, yes, they are all | :01:36. | :01:37.
Tonight, we put that request to a representative | :01:38. | :01:40.
We condemn it without any reservation. | :01:41. | :01:42.
It was a very annoying statement from this gentleman. | :01:43. | :01:49.
I mean, Islam never allows anything which is like that or killing | :01:50. | :01:52.
There are around 600 Ahmadiyya Muslims in Scotland. | :01:53. | :02:00.
We have been advising our members to take extra precautions, | :02:01. | :02:09.
although we do not have any threat from the majority of the Muslims. | :02:10. | :02:14.
The Ahmadiyya community leader said today that it's very important | :02:15. | :02:17.
at times like this that all Muslim communities come together. | :02:18. | :02:20.
They themselves are launching a poster campaign | :02:21. | :02:21.
It's slogan - United Against Extremism. | :02:22. | :02:29.
A Bulgarian man has been found guilty of murdering | :02:30. | :02:32.
31-year-old Nikola Zhulev killed Alan Gardner at his home | :02:33. | :02:42.
He hit Mr Gardner over the head with a frying pan. | :02:43. | :02:45.
This is Nikola Zhulev, caught trying to pawn items, | :02:46. | :02:54.
after he had robbed and killed jeweller Alan Gardner. | :02:55. | :02:59.
Zhulev is from Bulgaria and was living in Perth, | :03:00. | :03:01.
He got to know Alan Gardner, who ran a jewellery business | :03:02. | :03:07.
He was sometimes sent special parcels of jewellery to repair. | :03:08. | :03:14.
On the 14th of April last year, Zhulev was short | :03:15. | :03:16.
He promised landlord he would have it in a few days' time. | :03:17. | :03:23.
In the interim, Zhulev carried out a series of Internet | :03:24. | :03:27.
This graphic shows the injury to Mr Gardner's head | :03:28. | :03:36.
The imprint matched the base of this heavy 1.5 kilograms frying pan. | :03:37. | :03:43.
Mr Gardner's feet were also bound with tape and it's believed | :03:44. | :03:51.
After Mr Gardner's death, Zhulev was seen in this | :03:52. | :03:54.
money shop in Perth, trying to pawn jewellery. | :03:55. | :04:05.
He pawned other items from Mr Gardner's home | :04:06. | :04:07.
and he also bought food with Mr Gardner's credit cards. | :04:08. | :04:13.
He even tried to sell the dead man's car. | :04:14. | :04:15.
And with this money, he paid his landlord. | :04:16. | :04:17.
The court heard from Zhulev's friend, he confessed he had hit | :04:18. | :04:20.
Mr Gardner over the head with a pan and killed him. | :04:21. | :04:23.
Zhulev had been planning on disposing of Mr Gardner's body. | :04:24. | :04:30.
He bought a spade from Home Base and dug a shallow grave | :04:31. | :04:33.
in the woodland, but he ran out of time and police | :04:34. | :04:36.
The judge said in her view this was a cold and calculated killing. | :04:37. | :04:41.
Zhulev now faces a life sentence for murder. | :04:42. | :04:43.
He will learn next month how many years he has to serve | :04:44. | :04:46.
in prison before he can be considered for parole. | :04:47. | :04:48.
Detectives investigating the disappearance of | :04:49. | :04:50.
a Metropolitan Police officer, who's originally from Inverness, | :04:51. | :04:52.
PC Gordon Semple was last seen on April the 1st | :04:53. | :04:56.
Officers have informed the 59-year-old's family | :04:57. | :05:06.
about the discovery of human remains at a property in Southwark. | :05:07. | :05:09.
A 49-year-old man was arrested at the address on suspicion | :05:10. | :05:11.
A postmortem will be held in due course. | :05:12. | :05:15.
On the Holyrood campaign trail, the party leaders have been setting | :05:16. | :05:18.
out rival plans to fight poverty in Scotland. | :05:19. | :05:20.
As our political editor Brian Taylor explains, | :05:21. | :05:22.
it's an issue that's been at the forefront of | :05:23. | :05:24.
And go they did, but with slum clearings, | :05:25. | :05:35.
For thousands, disadvantage and dismay remain entrenched. | :05:36. | :05:42.
Nicola Sturgeon commissioned a report on poverty but has yet | :05:43. | :05:45.
Can I get a big smile, can we see your teeth? | :05:46. | :05:48.
She insisted she has already acted on key findings and will do | :05:49. | :05:51.
Today the SNP leader visited a centre in Glasgow, helping | :05:52. | :05:56.
She pledged to cut council tax for the poorest, | :05:57. | :06:03.
to extend free school meals, to increase cash support for those | :06:04. | :06:06.
with young children and to build the nurseries needed | :06:07. | :06:10.
to meet her pledge to double free childcare for three | :06:11. | :06:12.
This is a transformational commitment. | :06:13. | :06:19.
It will take us the next Parliament to build up to delivering | :06:20. | :06:22.
that commitment in full, but I think it is the most important | :06:23. | :06:25.
infrastructure project that we will undertake | :06:26. | :06:26.
With a little help, Kezia Dugdale counts out the cash she says | :06:27. | :06:38.
struggling families would save under Labour's council tax plans. | :06:39. | :06:40.
Visiting a credit union in Paisley, she insisted Labour would outpace | :06:41. | :06:43.
the SNP's anti-poverty plans, funded by a penny on all income tax | :06:44. | :06:47.
rates, plus higher tax for the very top earners. | :06:48. | :06:52.
Risk taxing the millionaires, risk asking the wealthiest | :06:53. | :06:54.
to pay a bit more tax, because the price of not doing that | :06:55. | :06:57.
will be paid by the poorest people across Scotland. | :06:58. | :07:00.
Nicola Sturgeon says Labour's plans could penalise the poor. | :07:01. | :07:03.
Kezia Dugdale says she would protect the lowest earners. | :07:04. | :07:11.
Ruth Davidson spreads the goodies evenly and likewise the Conservative | :07:12. | :07:20.
leader says there is such a thing as society, her party's manifesto | :07:21. | :07:26.
will feature policies to help the poor. | :07:27. | :07:27.
We are looking at issues surrounding housing, | :07:28. | :07:29.
surrounding child care, because we know that particularly | :07:30. | :07:32.
for people from deprived areas, that gap opens up before | :07:33. | :07:34.
We will look at more flexible childcare for one and two-year-olds | :07:35. | :07:43.
Who's said never work with animals or children? | :07:44. | :07:46.
Not Willie Rennie, anyway, as he keeps this African fish eagle | :07:47. | :07:49.
He was advocating action to help rural Scotland, | :07:50. | :07:52.
but he says more money for education would help tackle | :07:53. | :07:55.
Liberal Democrats believe the route out of poverty can be guaranteed | :07:56. | :08:02.
That's why we're going to invest ?475 million in nursery | :08:03. | :08:06.
schools and schools, but also in colleges, | :08:07. | :08:10.
to give people the skills and education they need to be | :08:11. | :08:13.
And the word on the street - it's your election, | :08:14. | :08:21.
The UK Independence Party leader, Nigel Farage, has published | :08:22. | :08:29.
a manifesto for the Holyrood election at an event in Edinburgh. | :08:30. | :08:32.
From there, our political correspondent, Glenn Campbell. | :08:33. | :08:38.
Nigel Farage arrives with no protesters to greet him, | :08:39. | :08:41.
just journalists, some Ukip supporters and a kilted | :08:42. | :08:43.
I'm quite pleased to say I suppose that there wasn't the usual | :08:44. | :08:52.
Here is what happened a year before the Scottish | :08:53. | :08:55.
Ukip campaigned to keep the UK together and wants | :08:56. | :09:09.
no further devolution of power from Westminster. | :09:10. | :09:14.
The party exists to get the UK out of the European Union. | :09:15. | :09:18.
At Holyrood, they aspire to lower income tax and introduce a new 30p | :09:19. | :09:21.
middle rate when economic circumstances allow. | :09:22. | :09:22.
What we are saying is that we will in Holyrood campaign actively | :09:23. | :09:28.
against tax increases because we believe that will make | :09:29. | :09:29.
Ukip's only elected politician in Scotland says he'll stand down | :09:30. | :09:33.
from the European Parliament to focus on Holyrood | :09:34. | :09:35.
Would you keep free personal care for the elderly? | :09:36. | :09:42.
How would you find all of that when you also want to cut taxes | :09:43. | :10:11.
and cut the block grant that Holyrood receives from Westminster? | :10:12. | :10:14.
Well, I can tell you quite simply, although rest of them don't | :10:15. | :10:16.
referendum, rather than in next month's Holyrood vote. | :10:17. | :10:24.
Ukip has never had anyone elected to the Scottish Parliament before. | :10:25. | :10:26.
They used to want to close it down, but at this election, | :10:27. | :10:29.
Nigel Farage is predicting a breakthrough that some | :10:30. | :10:31.
of his controversial un-politically correct candidates will win seats | :10:32. | :10:33.
An investigation is underway, after a 37-year-old woman was raped | :10:34. | :10:39.
Police said the woman was subjected to a serious sexual | :10:40. | :10:43.
assault in Queen's Park, near the Shawlands area | :10:44. | :10:53.
of the city, at about 11pm on the 30th of March. | :10:54. | :10:55.
Police have appealed for anyone who was in the park that night, | :10:56. | :10:58.
and who saw anyone acting suspiciously, to get in touch. | :10:59. | :11:01.
The last surviving resident of St Kilda, a remote | :11:02. | :11:02.
archipelago evacuated in 1930, has died. | :11:03. | :11:04.
Rachel Johnson, seen here third from the right, | :11:05. | :11:08.
was born on the main island of Hirta in July 1922. | :11:09. | :11:12.
Now the weather outlook for tonight and tomorrow. | :11:13. | :11:19.
Thank you. Good evening. We have showers stating away tonight and we | :11:20. | :11:26.
will see largely clear skies. Today we had some heavy showers, but also | :11:27. | :11:31.
some sunny spells. This from one of our weather watchers. We could see | :11:32. | :11:36.
some largely dry and fine images with beautiful sunshine in store as | :11:37. | :11:39.
well. The showers will continue to fade away. Lingering only four more | :11:40. | :11:46.
Easter in coastal areas. Temperatures dipping, especially for | :11:47. | :11:50.
Northern areas, temperatures could be below freezing. We could see a | :11:51. | :11:55.
frost with lighter winds. Quarter to share were still around for me as | :11:56. | :12:00.
well. For tomorrow morning, largely dry, sunshine around, Dumfries and | :12:01. | :12:04.
Galloway get sunshine as well. A bit more cloud around for the Borders in | :12:05. | :12:08.
the morning, the risk of water to showers here. Along the eastern | :12:09. | :12:12.
coast, with the risk of one or two showers. Elsewhere, largely dry and | :12:13. | :12:15.
find, especially across more northern parts of the country, a | :12:16. | :12:21.
start. The rest of the country, largely dry and fine for most of us, | :12:22. | :12:24.
a few scattered showers around and later in the day by the afternoon we | :12:25. | :12:30.
will see a weather front pushing in across Northern Ireland by lunchtime | :12:31. | :12:34.
and the Western fringes of Scotland and Wales and England as well into | :12:35. | :12:38.
the afternoon. Temperatures could reach double figures, but for | :12:39. | :12:41.
eastern parts of Scotland, maybe or only eight or nine Celsius at best. | :12:42. | :12:45.
He continues to progress tonight from West to East, some snow for the | :12:46. | :12:50.
Grampians for a time is possible, temperatures down to four or five | :12:51. | :12:54.
Celsius, quite a wet and cloudy starch of the weekend. J starts off | :12:55. | :13:00.
damp, the weather front will move northward, and improving story | :13:01. | :13:05.
through the day. Some sunny spells, scattered showers, but the rain band | :13:06. | :13:09.
lingers in the northern and eastern coastal areas. Temperatures on the | :13:10. | :13:16.
cooler side, seven to 10 Celsius. Some uncertainty because of this low | :13:17. | :13:19.
pressure to the southwest of the UK, but for Scotland it looks largely | :13:20. | :13:22.
dry and fine. Our next update is during Breakfast | :13:23. | :13:24.
at 6:25 tomorrow morning. But, from everyone on the late | :13:25. | :13:29.
team here in Glasgow | :13:30. | :13:31. |
