Helping more young people from disadvantaged areas get | :00:52. | :01:06.
to university is one of the Scottish government's top priorities. | :01:07. | :01:09.
But according to research published today the problem remains stark. | :01:10. | :01:12.
Young Scots from disadvantaged areas are four times less likely to go | :01:13. | :01:16.
to university than those from wealthy backgrounds. | :01:17. | :01:20.
That's a bigger gap than anywhere else in the UK. | :01:21. | :01:23.
Here's our education correspondent Jamie McIvor. | :01:24. | :01:35.
The number of Scots going to university is at a record high, and | :01:36. | :01:41.
more youngsters from disadvantaged areas are starting to study for a | :01:42. | :01:45.
degree, but this isn't the whole story. Youngsters from the most | :01:46. | :01:50.
prosperous parts of Scotland are four times more likely to go to | :01:51. | :01:54.
university than those from the most deprived areas. That gap is the | :01:55. | :01:57.
widest in the UK. All parts of the deprived areas. That gap is the | :01:58. | :02:02.
UK are struggling with widening access but in Scotland we have not | :02:03. | :02:06.
made such good progress as in England in getting more poorer young | :02:07. | :02:11.
people into university. The Scottish Government says closing the gap is | :02:12. | :02:16.
one of its biggest names, but this will take time. There has been a | :02:17. | :02:20.
historic pub with younger people from deprived backgrounds get into | :02:21. | :02:25.
university. We are seeing significant improvements, and young | :02:26. | :02:27.
people in Scotland are now more likely to go to university under the | :02:28. | :02:32.
SNP government than when we came to office. But there is much more to | :02:33. | :02:38.
do. There is one big difference in university policy between Scotland | :02:39. | :02:42.
and the rest of the UK. Free tuition. A matter of principle which | :02:43. | :02:48.
comes at a cost. It means there is a rigid limit on the number of | :02:49. | :02:53.
university places open to Scots. Unless the number of places | :02:54. | :02:57.
continues to rise, helping the disadvantaged could cause others to | :02:58. | :03:02.
lose out. There is a priority that needs to be given to those from | :03:03. | :03:05.
disadvantaged backgrounds and that is a talent we take up. We have to | :03:06. | :03:10.
look at how to do that without displacing other learners, many from | :03:11. | :03:15.
very ordinary backgrounds. Some say direct comparison with England is | :03:16. | :03:20.
now difficult. One reason is the role of colleges. More people under | :03:21. | :03:25.
30 in Scotland have been in higher education ban in England, but here, | :03:26. | :03:31.
two in five went to college first, whereas in England it is roughly one | :03:32. | :03:34.
in eight. These students at college are hoping to go on to do degrees. I | :03:35. | :03:41.
hope to do mechanical engineering at Strathclyde University. I have | :03:42. | :03:45.
chosen this route because it is a good transition. There is no need to | :03:46. | :03:54.
rush. Today's report is a reminder that widening access is a | :03:55. | :03:57.
complicated problem with no easy sound bite solutions. | :03:58. | :04:00.
The family of a teenage girl from North Lanarkshire, | :04:01. | :04:02.
who died after falling ill during a PE lesson, have | :04:03. | :04:04.
praised school staff for "giving her a fighting chance". | :04:05. | :04:07.
14-year-old Kiera Beagle died in hospital after being airlifted | :04:08. | :04:09.
from Calderhead High School, in Shotts on Thursday. | :04:10. | :04:12.
Graham Stewart is there for us tonight. | :04:13. | :04:23.
Kiera Beagle has been described as a popular and much respected member of | :04:24. | :04:30.
the school community here. Yesterday, during a PE lesson, she | :04:31. | :04:35.
felt the floor in big aims Hall. Staff immediately rushed to the | :04:36. | :04:40.
scene with a different eight machine and administered several of CPR. She | :04:41. | :04:45.
was flown to a hospital in Glasgow but later died. I have been speaking | :04:46. | :04:49.
to the headteacher who has been paying his respects. It is a very | :04:50. | :04:55.
rare event. There is a sense of sadness. Akira was a popular girl in | :04:56. | :05:02.
the school. -- Akira. She had a smile for everybody. She would speak | :05:03. | :05:08.
to me in the morning and wave to me on the way out at the end of the | :05:09. | :05:14.
day. Kiera Beagle's grandmother has been paying tribute to the school | :05:15. | :05:19.
staff and emergency services for, in her words, giving her a fighting | :05:20. | :05:25.
chance. A fundraising page has now raised nearly ?2000. This is a | :05:26. | :05:30.
tight-knit school community, only 400 pupils, so everybody tends to | :05:31. | :05:35.
know each other. Streams of pupils have been delivering floral tributes | :05:36. | :05:41.
today. Police Scotland say the death is as of yet unexplained but a | :05:42. | :05:44.
postmortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact | :05:45. | :05:46.
circumstances of her death. You're watching Reporting | :05:47. | :05:48.
Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on tonight's | :05:49. | :05:49.
programme: Breathing new life into | :05:50. | :05:53.

a publicity stunt could land The jury in the Liam Fee trial have | :06:03. | :06:06.
been sent home and told to return on Monday to continue | :06:07. | :06:19.
considering their verdict. The toddler's mother, Rachel Fee, | :06:20. | :06:22.
and her partner, Nyomi Fee, deny murdering the two-year-old | :06:23. | :06:24.
in March 2014. They also deny abusing | :06:25. | :06:29.
two other children. With the jury home for the weekend | :06:30. | :06:42.
this long-running trial at the High Court in Livingston will go into an | :06:43. | :06:47.
eight week. Lord Burns began his direction to the jury yesterday. | :06:48. | :06:51.
They left to consider their verdict at 10:40am. He said the jury of | :06:52. | :06:59.
eight women and six men should consider the evidence | :07:00. | :07:01.
dispassionately, although it was an emotional case. He said it was a | :07:02. | :07:05.
circumstantial case and any inferences from the evidence should | :07:06. | :07:07.
be reasonable and without speculation. The couple are accused | :07:08. | :07:13.
of eight charges, including neglecting and murdering Liam Fee, | :07:14. | :07:17.
and a catalogue of abuse against two other boys over two years. The case | :07:18. | :07:23.
is that they engaged in an escalating passage of cruelty which | :07:24. | :07:26.
led to the young boy dying from a blow to the abdomen so severe it led | :07:27. | :07:31.
to his heart rupturing. The defence say it was neither of them that | :07:32. | :07:34.
killed Liam Fee, but another young child is responsible. The jury spent | :07:35. | :07:41.
four hours deliberating the evidence over the course of the day before | :07:42. | :07:46.
they were sent home. Nyomi Fee waved to her mother sitting in the public | :07:47. | :07:50.
gallery, as Lord Burns adjourned the case for the weekend. He told the | :07:51. | :07:54.
jury they could reconvene on Monday at 10am to continue their | :07:55. | :07:59.
deliberations. Rachel and Nyomi Fee deny murdering Liam Fee and blaming | :08:00. | :08:04.
his death on another child. They also deny abuse charges against two | :08:05. | :08:05.
other children. Hundreds of North Sea workers | :08:06. | :08:08.

equipment, and this, these are radar, which will sweep up to 20 | :09:01. | :09:05.
miles and tell us where the other ships are. Scottish and German | :09:06. | :09:11.
pupils are being shown around HMS Kent in Leith as part of | :09:12. | :09:14.
commemorations for the Battle of Jutland. 100 years ago when the | :09:15. | :09:18.
Royal Navy confronted the German high Seas Fleet in the North Sea, | :09:19. | :09:23.
more than 8000 men died. What did the visitors make of it? I like it | :09:24. | :09:29.
that our countries are friends right now, and I can be here on a Royal | :09:30. | :09:36.
Navy ship. I did not know much about it but the experience has been great | :09:37. | :09:41.
for me to understand what happened and the history of it all. The | :09:42. | :09:47.
battle left 14 Royal Navy ships at the bottom of the North Sea. But one | :09:48. | :09:51.
of the survivors was Edward George Hobbs. Today, his grandson, Graham, | :09:52. | :09:59.
his head gardener for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission | :10:00. | :10:02.
in Scotland, and has been preparing a naval cemetery in South Queensbury | :10:03. | :10:09.
for remembrance events. It will be poignant, my grandfather's side, | :10:10. | :10:16.
seeing commemorations. Two or three of his contemporaries are here. That | :10:17. | :10:23.
could quite easily have been him. More than 6000 British see men | :10:24. | :10:28.
perished at Jutland but the battle is now seen as a victory. Loss of | :10:29. | :10:35.
life was great on our side and the loss of ships, too. But the German | :10:36. | :10:39.
high Seas Fleet never put to sea again with the serious intention of | :10:40. | :10:44.
engaging the grand Fleet. That meant that Britain retained command of the | :10:45. | :10:47.
North Sea and was able to mount a blockade of German -- Germany. That | :10:48. | :10:53.
was important in bringing about the end of the war. Much of the British | :10:54. | :10:59.
grand Fleet, particularly battle cruisers blown up by German forces, | :11:00. | :11:04.
sailed from here, which is why the area will play a central role in the | :11:05. | :11:10.
centenary. Events today have been about fact-finding, children | :11:11. | :11:13.
learning about the past. The major commemorations gets underway | :11:14. | :11:18.
tomorrow, and on Tuesday on the Orkney Islands. | :11:19. | :11:22.
Experts are warning today that fake or smuggled goods can not | :11:23. | :11:25.
just be disappointing but downright dangerous. | :11:26. | :11:26.
In Glasgow today the public were also being warned that selling | :11:27. | :11:29.
cheap counterfeit goods has become an attractive outlet | :11:30. | :11:32.

Roll up, roll up. Do you fancy some designer boots? The grey ones, the | :11:43. | :11:51.
brown, or the tan? You would not want any of these, because this is | :11:52. | :11:56.
the real McCoy, the proper sheepskin. These are cheap and nasty | :11:57. | :12:00.
nylon and if you ended up with that, you would soon end up with this. Not | :12:01. | :12:06.
much of a bargain. The firm that makes the genuine boots has had | :12:07. | :12:10.
almost 70,000 websites selling fakes taken down. The trade in rip-offs of | :12:11. | :12:16.
designer goods is massive. 100 arrests have been made in Glasgow | :12:17. | :12:23.
alone in the last three years, and it goes far beyond accessories. We | :12:24. | :12:27.

six -- products which can go up in flames. Meet the detective .com | :12:37. | :12:40.

Two big pieces of news from the French Open tonight. | :15:38. | :15:40.
Andy Murray is safely through to the fourth round | :15:41. | :15:43.
on Sunday, after a straight-sets win over Ivo Karlovic. | :15:44. | :15:46.
But the tournament is over for nine times champion Rafa Nadal, | :15:47. | :15:51.
who's had to withdraw with a wrist injury. | :15:52. | :15:55.
No such worries for Murray - who's even been practising his French. | :15:56. | :16:00.
A serenade from the stands for Scotland's finest. Andy Murray was | :16:01. | :16:13.
on song straightaway, banishing the blues of his previous struggles this | :16:14. | :16:24.
week. When your opponent is 6ft 11in, lobbing him isn't a great | :16:25. | :16:30.
plan. The margins for error in tennis are minuscule. Not that too | :16:31. | :16:34.
many errors came from the Scot's side. He wanted a quick win and | :16:35. | :16:39.
after 24 minutes Murray was a third of the way there. The key moment | :16:40. | :16:42.
came in the first game of the second set. Another break of the Karlovic | :16:43. | :16:49.
serve was all Murray needed to take a two-set lead. When it came to the | :16:50. | :16:54.
tie-break in the third, Murray was too good. It is hungry work staying | :16:55. | :17:01.
at the top in tennis. No sooner had victory been claimed, the winner | :17:02. | :17:04.
started thinking about tonight's tea, in French. | :17:05. | :17:15.
HE SPEAKS FRENCH You don't enjoy speaking languages? | :17:16. | :17:21.
I do like languages, I'm not very good at them! What a difference a | :17:22. | :17:26.
couple of days make. Andy Murray right back on form and all of a | :17:27. | :17:30.
sudden one win away from the quarterfinals of the French Open. | :17:31. | :17:35.
Standing in his way on Sunday, a similar type of opponent, the | :17:36. | :17:40.
big-serving American John Isner. He hasn't managed a single win over | :17:41. | :17:43.
Murray in their five previous matches. | :17:44. | :17:44.
Championship club Ayr United could be in trouble with the Scottish FA | :17:45. | :17:46.
over publicity shots for their new first team kit. | :17:47. | :17:50.
One sporting organisation says they're sexist | :17:51. | :17:53.
The SFA's compliance officer will decide whether the club faces | :17:54. | :17:57.
charges of bringing Scottish football into disrepute. | :17:58. | :18:04.
They have been promoted to the SPFL Championship, the second tier, but | :18:05. | :18:12.
it seems months before the new season starts, Ayr United are | :18:13. | :18:15.
already in trouble with the authorities. It's all because of | :18:16. | :18:20.
publicity shots for the team's new kit. The shirt sponsors used images | :18:21. | :18:32.
like this. That prompted complaints to the Scottish FA. What kind of | :18:33. | :18:36.
message is this sending out that it is acceptable to have women naked | :18:37. | :18:40.
and painted to try and sell a football strip? Ayr United are a | :18:41. | :18:44.
family club. They should be appealing to families. There is an | :18:45. | :18:48.
own goal here in terms of how they have tried to appeal to the | :18:49. | :18:52.
families. It is a non-starter. The publicity shots have got people | :18:53. | :18:56.
talking in Ayr. What do you make of that? Disgusting. It's painted on. | :18:57. | :19:07.
Yeah. It's good. Covered. So it is alright. Ayr United are making no | :19:08. | :19:19.
official comment. The sponsors are. Their founder told the BBC: | :19:20. | :19:33.
Ayr United won a play-off final to reach the Championship, wearing | :19:34. | :19:39.
their old kit. They will probably escape sanction for the post-match | :19:40. | :19:45.
pitch invasion. The SFA's compliance officer will determine whether they | :19:46. | :19:49.
face charges for this week's publicity stunt. | :19:50. | :19:50.
Scotland's Paul Lawrie has been named as one of Darren Clarke's | :19:51. | :19:52.

during the Commonwealth Games two years ago, says budget cuts | :20:21. | :20:22.
could have a negative effect on the next generation | :20:23. | :20:24.
These school pupils walk or run the daily mile. Today they were joined | :20:25. | :20:37.
by two Scottish swimmers, who will compete in this summer's Olympics | :20:38. | :20:42.
with Team GB. They might inspire some of these youngsters to take up | :20:43. | :20:45.
sport. One might follow in their footsteps. Robbie Renwick has tasted | :20:46. | :20:51.
success at the top level. He is a World Champion and was a medal | :20:52. | :20:57.
winner during Glasgow 2014. Now, another silver in 2014. He is proud | :20:58. | :21:01.
of those Games but does have concerns. There's been so many | :21:02. | :21:05.
budget cuts in the local councils and they are ripping away all the | :21:06. | :21:10.
grassroot sport in my opinion. We have had the likes of such a | :21:11. | :21:14.
fantastic successful Commonwealth Games, you know, it would be great | :21:15. | :21:18.
to have all these facilities open and to have loads of kids coming | :21:19. | :21:23.
through totally inspired because come ten years down the line, it | :21:24. | :21:27.
will be them who will be asked to represent their country. The numbers | :21:28. | :21:31.
are not coming through. It will be a huge disappointment. In response, a | :21:32. | :21:36.
Scottish Government spokesman told us: | :21:37. | :21:59.
Pointers to a Games legacy perhaps, but others feel more could be done. | :22:00. | :22:03.
That is all from me tonight. It's nearly three decades since one | :22:04. | :22:06.
of the biggest theatre 'Witch's Blood' was performed | :22:07. | :22:08.
at several venues throughout Dundee Now there are plans to revive | :22:09. | :22:13.
the production in time Tonight parts of the show | :22:14. | :22:17.
will be performed in 'Remembering Witch's Blood', | :22:18. | :22:21.
as Andrew Anderson reports. In an abandoned print works, they | :22:22. | :22:34.
are remembering Witch's Blood. You can feel the tension. It was | :22:35. | :22:41.
amazing. Back in 1987, Caroline Hogan was the witch. The story of | :22:42. | :22:46.
the town will be told... I remember it being a lot of fun, a lot of fun. | :22:47. | :22:52.
We had rehearsals to go to. We had to practice, you know, and rehearse | :22:53. | :22:54.
We had rehearsals to go to. We had lines. There was so many of us all | :22:55. | :22:58.
just keeping us going. I was only 15 at the time. I was still at school. | :22:59. | :23:03.
This was dead exciting. The production was one of the biggest | :23:04. | :23:08.
community theatre events ever seen in Scotland. A cast of 500. An | :23:09. | :23:14.
audience of 1,000. They were bussed to the locations throughout Dundee. | :23:15. | :23:19.
Now a slightly smaller cast is busy rehearsing some songs from the | :23:20. | :23:23.
original show. The director, who put it altogether, nearly three decades | :23:24. | :23:29.
ago, is back. I was looking at what was happening in Dundee. I felt a | :23:30. | :23:34.
pang of homesickness, which is amazing. I really do believe that | :23:35. | :23:39.
Dundee is a spiritual home for me. I think I learnt everything I know | :23:40. | :23:45.
about theatre in this place. This performance is a taster. If there is | :23:46. | :23:49.
an appetite for more Witch's Blood, then it is hoped to stage a fuller | :23:50. | :23:53.
version of the show next year on its 30th anniversary. | :23:54. | :24:04.
So, what kind of weekend can we expect from the weather? | :24:05. | :24:09.
Looking fairly settled for most of us. Good evening. It has been | :24:10. | :24:14.
disappointingly dull across much of Scotland today. Again, in the | :24:15. | :24:19.
north-west, leading a charmed life with plenty of sunshine and clear | :24:20. | :24:25.
blue skies. A few sharp showers in the north-west for a time. As we | :24:26. | :24:28.
head through the overnight period, these will die out. It becomes dry, | :24:29. | :24:32.
across-the-board. A fairly cloudy night to come for most of us. | :24:33. | :24:37.
Perhaps some patchy mist and fog for eastern areas. Again, the clearest | :24:38. | :24:41.
skies tonight will be in the north-west. And not a cold night to | :24:42. | :24:46.
come for most of us. Into tomorrow, we hold on fairly cloudy skies. As | :24:47. | :24:54.
we go through the day, it is a gradual brightening up process. Most | :24:55. | :24:59.
of us seeing some brightness. So taking a closer look for the | :25:00. | :25:05.
Argyll area. Plenty of brightness, some sunshine around. Just the odd | :25:06. | :25:09.
shower through Dumfries and Galloway. For parts of the Fife | :25:10. | :25:22.
area, it will feel quite cold. Inland over Aberdeenshire, and for | :25:23. | :25:25.
much of the north-west, plenty of sunshine again tomorrow. A few | :25:26. | :25:28.
showers developing here through the afternoon. Highs of 19 or 20 | :25:29. | :25:36.
Celsius. If you are hillwalking or climbing | :25:37. | :25:40.
tomorrow, for the northern ranges, a lot of dry, bright weather. A few | :25:41. | :25:46.
thundery showers across the north-west. | :25:47. | :25:53.
For the more southern ranges, a lot of dry weather. Some brightness. A | :25:54. | :25:57.
fair amount of cloud through the hills and for the Galloway hills, | :25:58. | :26:02.
the odd shower. Again, 8 or 9 Celsius and light east to | :26:03. | :26:06.
south-easterly winds. If you are going into the inshore waters | :26:07. | :26:09.
tomorrow, it is a Force 3 or less for the more western areas. The | :26:10. | :26:14.
winds will be light or slight seas and good visibility. | :26:15. | :26:20.
For the inshore waters in the east, it's a Force 3 or 4 with slight seas | :26:21. | :26:26.
and moderate to good visibility. Taking a look into the evening | :26:27. | :26:30.
tomorrow, a few sharp showers across the north-west. Otherwise, a lot of | :26:31. | :26:33.
dry, bright weather to end the day with some spells of sunshine. Sunday | :26:34. | :26:37.
will be a very similar day to Saturday. A few showers developing | :26:38. | :26:40.
across the north-west. Otherwise, a Saturday. A few showers developing | :26:41. | :26:44.
lot of dry, bright weather with plenty of sunshine around and for | :26:45. | :26:47.
bank holiday Monday, a lot of dry weather, the best of the sunshine | :26:48. | :26:50.
for central and south-western Scotland. | :26:51. | :26:52.
Now, a reminder of tonight's main news: Helping more young people | :26:53. | :26:55.
from disadvantaged areas get to university is one of the Scottish | :26:56. | :26:58.
But according to research published today the problem remains stark. | :26:59. | :27:03.
Young Scots from disadvantaged areas are four times less likely to go | :27:04. | :27:05.
to university than those from wealthy backgrounds. | :27:06. | :27:10.
Bogus, misleading and confusing - that's how the claims being made | :27:11. | :27:14.
by politicians on both sides of the EU referendum | :27:15. | :27:17.
campaign have been described by an influential group of MPs. | :27:18. | :27:21.
The Treasury Select Committee says the public are thoroughly fed up | :27:22. | :27:24.
of what they call an "arms race" of lurid claims and counter claims. | :27:25. | :27:31.
I'll be back with the headlines at 8.00pm and the late bulletin just | :27:32. | :27:34.
Until then, from everyone on the team - right | :27:35. | :27:38.
across the country - have a very good evening. | :27:39. | :27:41. |
