stability or stupidity? Join me on BBC Two, 11pm in Scotland. On BBC | :00:00. | :00:00.
One, time for the news where are. Good night. | :00:00. | :00:08.
A mother and her partner have been found guilty of murdering her son, | :00:09. | :00:12.
Rachel and Nyomi Fee were found guilty of killing the toddler | :00:13. | :00:16.
Both women had denied killing the two-year-old in a house | :00:17. | :00:22.
near Glenrothes in Fife, and blamed his death on another child. | :00:23. | :00:25.
Even as the verdict was read out in court, Nyomi Fee and Rachel Fee | :00:26. | :00:41.
looked passive, looking straight in front of them, guilty of a catalogue | :00:42. | :00:45.
of horrendous abuse against two young boys and the murder of a | :00:46. | :00:50.
vulnerable young child. It was an escalating pattern of violence | :00:51. | :00:53.
against Liam Fee that left him with a broken leg, a fractured arm and | :00:54. | :00:57.
ultimately a blow to his small body that it ruptured his heart. Liam | :00:58. | :01:06.
Fee's father had broken down in the gallery. Some of those who had been | :01:07. | :01:10.
friends with the women sat to the latter stages of the trial. As far | :01:11. | :01:17.
as I ventured goes, it's finished. I can't have my kids knowing people | :01:18. | :01:22.
like those. Monsters. I can't call them parents. Throughout this long | :01:23. | :01:26.
trial, the jury have had to endure some truly awful evidence. Perhaps | :01:27. | :01:30.
the worst is a crime scene video from the night the camera died. The | :01:31. | :01:34.
camera tracks around the house and into Liam Fee's bedroom and the | :01:35. | :01:38.
juries see the boy lying lifeless and pale on the floor, his left leg | :01:39. | :01:45.
bent upwards at an awkward angle. It was a distressing that allow some of | :01:46. | :01:48.
the jury members in tears and they asked the judge for a break. The | :01:49. | :01:55.
jury were excused for Tahir from jury service for ten years. Services | :01:56. | :02:02.
are being alerted to Liam Fee several times,. The woman arrived | :02:03. | :02:15.
most of the time together. They face life in prison. | :02:16. | :02:17.
The trial took seven weeks at the High Court in Livingston, | :02:18. | :02:20.
and it took two years to come to court. | :02:21. | :02:22.
Our reporter Andrew Anderson has been looking at the background | :02:23. | :02:25.
The death of William the -- Liam Fee is one of Scotland's's worst child | :02:26. | :02:42.
abuse cases. He suffered at the hands of his mother and her partner. | :02:43. | :02:48.
They also inflicted a catalogue of abuse on two other young boys. | :02:49. | :02:53.
One-time friends have been left in disbelief. You think you know | :02:54. | :02:57.
someone and it just goes to prove that you don't know them. I didn't | :02:58. | :03:01.
think in a million years she was capable of any of that stuff, | :03:02. | :03:08.
especially towards a baby. Rachel and Rachel Fee moved from the north | :03:09. | :03:14.
of England to this house in Fife in 2012. Within these walls, they | :03:15. | :03:18.
repeatedly assaulted Liam Fee. He died in this bedroom. Doctors found | :03:19. | :03:23.
Liam had suffered a ruptured heart from a bloke to his body. They also | :03:24. | :03:30.
discovered double fractures on his leg and arm -- blow. In total, they | :03:31. | :03:38.
counted more than 30 injuries. This man once counted Rachel Fee at his | :03:39. | :03:44.
best friend. His account is chilling. There was no emotion in | :03:45. | :03:53.
them, they were laughing and joking on that they were going to get sent | :03:54. | :03:58.
to jail for neglect because they knew they were getting done for | :03:59. | :04:02.
neglect anyway, they were saying. But laughing and joking on like, do | :04:03. | :04:07.
you think we'll get the same cell together? Back in fact, a major | :04:08. | :04:13.
police investigation was underway. Within a bed, a number of objects | :04:14. | :04:17.
are hidden that adds to the officers' suspicion. There are cable | :04:18. | :04:23.
ties, ropes and a chain. Five months after his death, police charged | :04:24. | :04:29.
Nyomi Fee and Rachel Fee with Liam's murder. They are also showered with | :04:30. | :04:33.
a catalogue of abuse against two other boys. It was a complex | :04:34. | :04:38.
inquiry. The abuse has taken place over a prolonged length of time. We | :04:39. | :04:46.
didn't want to miss some of the additional charges that could have | :04:47. | :04:54.
been set against the women. Rachel and Rachel Fee's trial took place | :04:55. | :05:02.
here. The jury watched video tapes with two young boys who had been in | :05:03. | :05:06.
the house the night that Liam died. One was the target the family blamed | :05:07. | :05:14.
for Liam's death. The social worker repeatedly reassured the boy that he | :05:15. | :05:19.
wasn't in any trouble as they try to untangle his story. What also became | :05:20. | :05:23.
clear was the terrible abuse the two boys has suffered. They spoke of | :05:24. | :05:28.
being beaten, locked in a cage built from a fireguard, tied up some | :05:29. | :05:33.
nights, forced to take hold showers and other abuses to appalling to | :05:34. | :05:45.
detail. -- cold. The jury in this trial listen to some of the most | :05:46. | :05:49.
horrifying evidence to come before it is a Scottish court. It has left | :05:50. | :05:53.
many people shocked, asking how these women could have been so | :05:54. | :05:55.
cruel. There's been a decline in how well | :05:56. | :05:56.
children in Scottish schools are doing in maths, | :05:57. | :05:58.
according to an official survey. The Scottish government says | :05:59. | :06:03.
performance is now stabilising, but accepts there's | :06:04. | :06:05.
much still to do. Critics have branded | :06:06. | :06:12.
the figures appalling. Our Education Correspondent | :06:13. | :06:13.
Jamie McIvor reports. George and Josh both do well in | :06:14. | :06:25.
maths. It's one of their best subjects. It's fun doing division | :06:26. | :06:30.
and times tables. I actually love subjects. It's fun doing division | :06:31. | :06:38.
division, it's good. This primary for class seems to really enjoy | :06:39. | :06:41.
maths, but across Scotland things are more of a problem. Across the | :06:42. | :06:45.
country, a sample of 10,000 children were assessed. Since 2011, the | :06:46. | :06:50.
proportion of primary for pupils doing well in maths has fallen | :06:51. | :06:53.
significantly, while in primary doing well in maths has fallen | :06:54. | :06:55.
seven the drop has been nearly as bad. Figures have been stabilising | :06:56. | :07:01.
though in secondary school performance, it is more constant. | :07:02. | :07:06.
But this is still a huge challenge for a Government who says that | :07:07. | :07:09.
raising attainment has been a huge pair two. We put in a range of | :07:10. | :07:21.
measures, designed to support the achievement of numerous A-levels in | :07:22. | :07:25.
schools. But it is too early for those to have an affect for the | :07:26. | :07:28.
numbers we see in front of us. We will intensify that. The most | :07:29. | :07:37.
damning statistic is that only two out of three primary for pupils are | :07:38. | :07:42.
confident about numerous day, yet that goes right down in secondary | :07:43. | :07:48.
school. Promised action includes schemes to drive at the performance | :07:49. | :07:51.
of schools covering disadvantaged areas. This specialist teacher gives | :07:52. | :07:57.
extra help and support in maths. Nationally, today's figures are a | :07:58. | :08:00.
disappointment. At worst, they suggest failure. Driving up | :08:01. | :08:04.
attainment is easier said than done. A man has been arrested | :08:05. | :08:07.
in connection with the death Francis Carolan, from | :08:08. | :08:09.
Dundasvale Court in the Cowcaddens area of the city, died | :08:10. | :08:13.
after a disturbance A 34-year-old is now | :08:14. | :08:15.
in police custody. A report will be sent | :08:16. | :08:21.
to the Procurator Fiscal. of the Battle of Jutland, | :08:22. | :08:27.
the largest naval battle Crowds lined the streets around | :08:28. | :08:30.
St Magnus Cathedral in Orkney. Further ceremonies took place | :08:31. | :08:36.
at the cemetery at Lyness on Hoy, and in the area of sea off Denmark, | :08:37. | :08:40.
where the battle took place. Shoulder to shoulder, Britain and | :08:41. | :09:03.
Germany united in commemoration, remembering the thousands who died | :09:04. | :09:06.
at sea fighting a war which was supposed to end all wars. Today the | :09:07. | :09:12.
talk of peace, reconciliation. Dear friends, let us practice loving each | :09:13. | :09:20.
other. For love comes from God. Certainly as a seal upon thine | :09:21. | :09:28.
heart, as a seal upon thine arm, because love is strong as death, | :09:29. | :09:33.
jealousy is cruel as the grave. Outside, hundreds lined the streets, | :09:34. | :09:37.
local people mix with descendants of those who died. People travelled | :09:38. | :09:42.
from all over the world to be here today to remember. The dignitaries | :09:43. | :09:45.
then sailed across the various ease with the grand Fleet was stationed | :09:46. | :09:49.
before the Battle of Jutland, 100 years ago today. Eight Belles | :09:50. | :09:55.
signals the end of a watch. Today it symbolised the loss of a sailor. We | :09:56. | :10:00.
pray that the carrot and values we commemorate in our forebears will | :10:01. | :10:05.
continue to guide the men and women of our naval services today. We | :10:06. | :10:14.
acknowledge the pain of so many in the aftermath of the battle and pray | :10:15. | :10:20.
for all those who continue to suffer as a result of war. Miles from | :10:21. | :10:27.
Orkney, crossing honesty, poppies were scattered from a warship, over | :10:28. | :10:33.
the sunken wrecks of the ships, the final resting place of thousands of | :10:34. | :10:37.
sailors who died in one of the biggest naval battles the world has | :10:38. | :10:38.
ever seen. The First Minister has recommended | :10:39. | :10:40.
that James Wolffe QC should be appointed as Scotland's new Lord | :10:41. | :10:42.
Advocate. Nicola Sturgeon says Mr Wolffe has | :10:43. | :10:45.
an outstanding legal background. He'll replace Frank Mulholland, | :10:46. | :10:49.
who's stepping down. Alison Di Rollo will become | :10:50. | :10:52.
the new Solicitor General. Rotherham are set to appoint | :10:53. | :10:57.

month. It's over to Kirsteen now | :11:13. | :11:17.
with the weather forecast The beginning of the meteorological | :11:18. | :11:30.
summer. In the coming days it will feel like summer across much of | :11:31. | :11:34.
Scotland. Tonight, it stays mostly dry. We will hold onto a fair amount | :11:35. | :11:39.
of cloud, especially in the north and east, perhaps some drizzle, | :11:40. | :11:43.
fairly misty and murky conditions here, some clear spells in the west. | :11:44. | :11:48.
Tomorrow morning, we start the day with a fair amount of cloud across | :11:49. | :11:51.
the north and west south-eastern areas especially. Around 8:00am, | :11:52. | :11:59.
parts of East Lothian and Edinburgh having a cloudy start then this | :12:00. | :12:04.
morning. Plenty of centre to come across Dumfries and Galloway, across | :12:05. | :12:06.
the central belt. Western coastal areas and into the north-west | :12:07. | :12:11.
Highlands and inland parts of the north-east, perhaps a cloudy start | :12:12. | :12:16.
across the western isles tomorrow. Along the Murray coast and | :12:17. | :12:25.
Aberdeenshire, brisk north-easterly winds. As we go through the day, the | :12:26. | :12:31.
cloud will tend to burn back to what's coastal areas, leaving plenty | :12:32. | :12:36.
of warm sunshine and a similar story across Northern Ireland. However, | :12:37. | :12:41.
across northern England and Wales, a fairly cloudy prospect with our | :12:42. | :12:43.
picks of rain continuing to push in from the north-east as we go through | :12:44. | :12:47.
the day tomorrow. Giving disappointingly cool under the cloud | :12:48. | :12:52.
and in exposure to these brisk north-easterly winds. Across | :12:53. | :12:54.
Scotland, towards evening, plenty of north-easterly winds. Across | :12:55. | :12:57.
sunshine around again, just across the far north and for some | :12:58. | :13:02.
south-eastern areas disappointingly cloudy and cool. Towards Thursday, | :13:03. | :13:07.
still high pressure dominating to the north-west of Scotland, keeping | :13:08. | :13:12.
things set up and dry here. A similar story across Northern | :13:13. | :13:15.
Ireland. However, across England and Wales, a fairly cloudy prospect, | :13:16. | :13:21.
some drizzly rain, giving cool towards eastern coastal areas. The | :13:22. | :13:25.
best recent and in the west and highs of 20 Celsius. | :13:26. | :13:25.
Our next update is during Breakfast at 6:25 tomorrow morning. | :13:26. | :13:30.
But, from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around | :13:31. | :13:34. |
