Commemorations have been taking place both in France and Scotland

:00:15.:00:17.

to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

:00:18.:00:20.

The First Minister joined other politicians and dignitaries

:00:21.:00:22.

at the battle site, to remember those who died in the bloodiest day

:00:23.:00:25.

Our reporter Cameron Buttle has this report.

:00:26.:00:36.

In this small, French village, the commemorations centred on this

:00:37.:00:38.

memorial, which has been dedicated to the battalion of

:00:39.:00:40.

The Royal Scots attacked from just over the skyline on the morning

:00:41.:00:47.

When the whistles blew, 800 men climbed out of the trenches.

:00:48.:00:54.

By the time they got to this position here,

:00:55.:00:57.

670 of them were dead or injured in one hour.

:00:58.:01:02.

By this time in the evening, on the first day of the Battle

:01:03.:01:06.

of the Somme, tens of thousands of men lay dead or dying

:01:07.:01:09.

This was the furthest any British unit got on that

:01:10.:01:12.

This one, small stretch of the 14-mile battle front,

:01:13.:01:24.

so many dead and injured for one mile gained, a position

:01:25.:01:28.

Then they travelled over to France to commence battle here.

:01:29.:01:45.

The main commemorations were held at the Thiepval memorial,

:01:46.:01:46.

attended by the heads of state of the allied nations,

:01:47.:01:49.

For all of us to have a chance to pay

:01:50.:01:55.

respect, it's important that the new generation carry these

:01:56.:01:58.

lessons of the First World War into the future.

:01:59.:02:00.

These are really important occasions.

:02:01.:02:09.

The kings own Scottish Borderers, from the islands to the low lands,

:02:10.:02:14.

cities, towns and villages, the Black Watch,

:02:15.:02:16.

Perhaps it is only those who fought in them understand what it was like.

:02:17.:02:40.

It is sad but you are honoured to be here. Young men from across the

:02:41.:02:44.

whole of the nation doing the right thing as it was at that time in this

:02:45.:02:49.

environment. It makes me think about my own mortality as a soldier.

:02:50.:02:51.

In Scotland there have been ceremonies across the country

:02:52.:02:53.

They began last night with a vigil at Edinburgh Castle,

:02:54.:02:57.

which concluded this morning with the two-minute silence.

:02:58.:02:58.

After the sun rose this morning, the firing of a gun from the castle

walls was the signal for a nation to fall silent.

:03:15.:03:21.

That silence was broken by a Wessel, originally belonging to Robert

:03:22.:03:30.

Hamilton, and act military officer loan by his great-nephew. It was a

:03:31.:03:35.

sound that would have sent the soldiers over the top and into

battle. -- artillery officer. Around the country the sacrifices of those

:03:41.:03:45.

men were remembered. The loss of more than 1500 men during the battle

:03:46.:03:52.

was marked today in Aberdeen. In Inverness, veterans and others

:03:53.:03:55.

gathered that the city's War Memorial to remember those who never

:03:56.:04:01.

returned. And in Glasgow, volunteers what the seats silently representing

:04:02.:04:07.

:04:08.:04:09.

events. A week after Britain

:04:10.:04:10.

voted to leave the EU, The MP Michael Gove,

:04:11.:04:12.

formally beginning his bid to become the next Conservative leader,

:04:13.:04:16.

said he didn't think there'd be a second Scottish

:04:17.:04:18.

independence referendum. Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn

:04:19.:04:19.

remains as Labour leader, but tensions are growing

:04:20.:04:21.

in the Scottish party. Here's our political

:04:22.:04:23.

correspondent Andrew Kerr. The result has left the political

:04:24.:04:33.

class at Westminster reeling. Michael Gove launched his

:04:34.:04:36.

leadership bid today, Mr Gove and the Home Secretary,

about another referendum. I don't think we're

:04:49.:04:54.

going to have a second To Labour now and their

:04:55.:04:56.

leadership row drags on. The beleaguered Jeremy Corbyn looks

:04:57.:05:03.

like he's survived another day and a leadership challenge

:05:04.:05:05.

might now come next week. At a time when the party could have

:05:06.:05:07.

been exploiting the Tory turmoil. This should have been a week

:05:08.:05:14.

for Labour to come out as a strong party of Opposition

:05:15.:05:16.

at a time when the Government In fact, what we've seen

:05:17.:05:19.

is the exact opposite, with Labour Party also falling apart

:05:20.:05:23.

in front of our very eyes. Jeremy Corbyn no longer commanding

the support of his party. Now the Scottish leader

:05:27.:05:34.

was in London today meeting They want to protect

:05:35.:05:35.

Scotland's links with the EU. Further tensions in the Scottish

party were clear for all to see, when her deputy, the MSP

:05:42.:05:45.

Alec Rowley, criticised MPs for their coup

the case for the first time in polling history,

a majority of Scots are in favour of independence

:06:26.:06:28.

whether or not it's going to be worth the SNP trying to hold

:06:29.:06:38.

a second independence referendum off the back of this Brexit vote

:06:39.:06:40.

will depend whether or not eventually the European Union says

:06:41.:06:43.

look, actually, if you go independent, you're in and you're

:06:44.:06:46.

in on a continuous basis or not. We've seen how the Spanish Prime

:06:47.:06:51.

Minister has said look, we shouldn't be talking to Scotland,

:06:52.:06:56.

France has said similar things. Ms Sturgeon's diplomacy

outlook for tonight It has spent an evening so far of

:08:01.:08:13.

late sunshine but also scattered heavy showers continuing and some

:08:14.:08:18.

rainbows. Here is one from one of our weather watchers and as we head

:08:19.:08:21.

through the night there will still be showers, mainly to the west and

:08:22.:08:26.

for the least it becomes prior what clear spells and turning chilly

:08:27.:08:31.

especially in rural areas. These scattered showers are the result of

low pressure dominating our weather and weather front after weather

front pushing and from the Atlantic. By tomorrow morning we continue to

:08:40.:08:43.

see showers towards the west of the country and some sunshine towards

:08:44.:08:48.

the East, so a closer look at 9am tomorrow. There will be heavy

:08:49.:08:52.

showers in the South West and western parts of the central belt as

well and along the West Coast. Along the east, some sunshine around

Aberdeen. They went light on land and the Northern Isles will see some

sunny spells and if few isolated showers. As we head through the day

:09:06.:09:10.

showers become more widespread and heady with the risk of hail and

:09:11.:09:16.

thunder across the UK. The showers heaviest towards the north of the

:09:17.:09:21.

country and Scotland and around the mid-teens, perhaps 17 five Aberdeen.

:09:22.:09:27.

By Saturday into Sunday, there will be some sunshine further towards

:09:28.:09:30.

late evening for Saturday and for the start of Sunday as well, we're

:09:31.:09:34.

looking at heavy showers towards the north of the country but the bulk of

:09:35.:09:39.

England and Wales and Northern Ireland see some sunshine but also

:09:40.:09:44.

some showers, but they will be fewer and further between compared to

:09:45.:09:48.

recent days. And for the South of England some showers and outbreaks

:09:49.:09:51.

of Shola radian across the south-east lingering into the

:09:52.:09:57.

evening. The temperature on Sunday around 15 but in the breeze it will

:09:58.:10:01.

feel cooler, and that is all for now.

:10:02.:10:03.

From everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around
