Prime Minister and his government saw off a no confidence motion in

parliament on Thursday. They argue that a failure to stick to

austerity measures would mean Portugal leaving the euro. The

country's railways are paralysed by a strike from train drivers

demanding more money. The austerity drive there is already pushing

Portugal into the worst recession since the 1970s. More belt-

tightening will be needed to meet the terms of its 78 billion euro

bail out. We have joined by our correspondent.

cut next year. There has been at a lot of focus on Greece and Spain in

the past few weeks. Update us on Portugal. There has been a lot

happening here. Measures announced this week, above all, increases in

income tax. A former minister of the Prime Minister's own party has
