Now for the latest financial news with Sally | :00:00. | :00:00.
Super Tuesday points to a Trump versus Clinton race to the | :00:00. | :00:21.
White House, but to what extent is the economy | :00:22. | :00:23.
And, not getting behind the wheel of driverless cars. | :00:24. | :00:32.
Theo Legget has been finding out for us at the Geneva Motor Show. | :00:33. | :00:45.
A sunny outlook for Australia. | :00:46. | :00:54.
Its economy keeps growing, despite the global commodities slump | :00:55. | :00:56.
Our team in the region has the latest. | :00:57. | :01:00.
It's the morning after Super Tuesday, | :01:01. | :01:01.
and the results so far point to a contest between Donald Trump and | :01:02. | :01:05.
Hilary Clinton to become the next President of the United States. | :01:06. | :01:08.
The election is on November the 8th, so there is still a long road ahead. | :01:09. | :01:11.
So, what do we know about the two candidates | :01:12. | :01:14.
With me is Jacob Parakilas, Assistant Head of the US and the | :01:15. | :01:27.
Good morning. Good morning. Nice to have you on the programme. First of | :01:28. | :01:41.
all, your reaction. It is what we expected. Donald Trump was predicted | :01:42. | :01:47.
to do well and he did, losing a couple of states to Ted Cruz and 12 | :01:48. | :01:54.
Marco Rubio. Marco Rubio was supposed to be the choice. -- one | :01:55. | :02:03.
to. He only won one. If you cannot do it on March 15 that is the end of | :02:04. | :02:09.
a challenge to trump. But Donald Trump is incredibly divisive within | :02:10. | :02:13.
the party and may not face a challenge on July. Bets are still | :02:14. | :02:26.
off. But it looks like they will become the nominees. If so, what do | :02:27. | :02:32.
we know about their thoughts on the US economy? And is that a big issue | :02:33. | :02:44.
for voters? There is a divide between Democratic and Republican | :02:45. | :02:46.
voters on this. Democratic voters are looking at domestic issues and | :02:47. | :02:57.
the Republican are looking at foreign policy. That may change in | :02:58. | :03:01.
the General Election. The issues that the two parties debate may | :03:02. | :03:15.
change. But it is as I said earlier. Donald Trump has interesting ideas | :03:16. | :03:19.
with taxes. Took us through some of the ideas he has floated and some of | :03:20. | :03:24.
the numbers that don't add up. Donald Trump in the past has | :03:25. | :03:29.
proposed a significant wealth tax, at one point, 40%, on the | :03:30. | :03:37.
wealthiest, to settle the national debt. -- 14%. He has backed away | :03:38. | :03:46.
from that and is going with the lines of the other nominees. He | :03:47. | :03:50.
wants to lower taxes across the board. It is difficult to see how | :03:51. | :03:55.
that will be paid for based on the spending plans he has put forward of | :03:56. | :04:06.
us. On the -- so far. Bernie Sanders says he is there to give back to the | :04:07. | :04:11.
American household. To what extent will Hillary Clinton than that | :04:12. | :04:17.
drum? And what about Obamacare? It was so difficult to get. Hillary | :04:18. | :04:24.
Clinton wants to build on Obama's term in office, continuing that. The | :04:25. | :04:35.
option to pursue major progressive change is fairly limited. She has | :04:36. | :04:42.
taken ideas from Bernie Sanders, but a more moderate version, and will | :04:43. | :04:46.
run without. It has been great to have you on the show, Jacob | :04:47. | :04:50.
Parakilas, I know you will be on here against the -- with that. -- | :04:51. | :04:55.
again. Australia's economy grew by 3% | :04:56. | :04:57.
in the three months to the end of December last year | :04:58. | :05:00.
when compared to the year before. This is much better than most | :05:01. | :05:03.
economists were expecting and very encouraging, given | :05:04. | :05:05.
the headwinds Australia is facing at the moment with lower commodity | :05:06. | :05:07.
prices and slowing growth in China. Sharanjit Leyl is in our | :05:08. | :05:10.
Asia Business Hub in Singapore. Nice to see you. Yeah. Australia is | :05:11. | :05:30.
known as the Lucky country. The latest economic figures confirm | :05:31. | :05:35.
that. Those growth figures were better than expected. Surprising | :05:36. | :05:39.
when set against the context of Australia being a major commodity | :05:40. | :05:44.
producing nation at a time when those commodities are actually worth | :05:45. | :05:50.
far less. That is due to the fact that they are aiming to mind their | :05:51. | :06:00.
commodities with the context of the falling Australian dollar. -- mine. | :06:01. | :06:04.
The price has dropped and the industry in Australia remains | :06:05. | :06:06.
competitive compared to other commodity exporting countries like | :06:07. | :06:15.
Brazil which is struggling with recession. And we are looking at | :06:16. | :06:19.
other figures also better, like tourism, finance, education, they | :06:20. | :06:26.
are really parts of Australia's economy and they have benefited from | :06:27. | :06:30.
that weak Australian dollar. And the agricultural system as well as | :06:31. | :06:36.
demand in Asia increases for Australian meat. Thank you. | :06:37. | :06:41.
Interesting news coming from Australia. | :06:42. | :06:43.
At the Geneva Motor Show this week, talk of a revolution is in the air. | :06:44. | :06:47.
Self-driving car concepts are everywhere, giving us a glimpse | :06:48. | :06:50.
of what a driverless environment might actually be like. | :06:51. | :06:53.
Theo Leggett has been looking into the future. | :06:54. | :06:58.
If the car of the future is going to be driverless who needs a steering | :06:59. | :07:05.
wheel? Let's put that away and bring up this high-definition screen. I | :07:06. | :07:11.
can use it to play games or to work, maybe look at my e-mails. -- | :07:12. | :07:18.
do. Let's bring those. A nice sound system. This is the brainchild of a | :07:19. | :07:27.
Swiss think tank looking at what the future of a driverless vehicle could | :07:28. | :07:32.
be. It doesn't have to look like this but it could be. If I want to | :07:33. | :07:36.
go back to old-fashioned driving them the steering wheel comes back | :07:37. | :07:43.
out again. -- then. Many people claimed that the passion of driving | :07:44. | :07:47.
is being taken away from them. I don't agree. You can push a button | :07:48. | :07:59.
to get autopilot switched off. You might think a car like this is a | :08:00. | :08:03.
figment of the imagination, after all, it has a droid on the back. But | :08:04. | :08:09.
ideas like these are becoming decidedly mainstream. Look at this | :08:10. | :08:15.
one. It comes from a mainstream manufacturer. It is from Nissan. | :08:16. | :08:21.
Look at the steering wheel. There she goes, tucked away into the | :08:22. | :08:24.
dashboard. Outcomes your entertainment. -- out comes. This is | :08:25. | :08:33.
just another concept car, obviously, so does it really matter? Nissan | :08:34. | :08:39.
says it does. Many of the technologies developed in the | :08:40. | :08:43.
prototype will soon find their way into cars like the Qashqai over | :08:44. | :08:47.
their which you really can buy. -- there. | :08:48. | :08:56.
Oil giant, Shell, is being sued in London | :08:57. | :09:00.
for the second time in five years over spills in the Niger Delta. | :09:01. | :09:03.
Two communities are claiming compensation and want Shell | :09:04. | :09:05.
Shell said it is at an "early stage" in reviewing the claims and that the | :09:06. | :09:10.
US chipmaker Qualcomm has agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle | :09:11. | :09:14.
allegations it violated bribery laws by hiring younger relatives | :09:15. | :09:17.
According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Qualcomm | :09:18. | :09:19.
went to "extraordinary lengths to gain a business advantage". | :09:20. | :09:22.
The probe found the firm also provided gifts, | :09:23. | :09:24.
travel and entertainment to try and influence officials. | :09:25. | :09:26.
Qualcomm did not admit or deny the allegations. | :09:27. | :09:36.
The financial markets. An interesting day so far. Very | :09:37. | :09:44.
positive, especially for Japan, up 4%. Hong Kong, also strong. The | :09:45. | :09:50.
United States, I don't know if we can show you, but the Dow Jones | :09:51. | :09:55.
ended up 2%, so did the main markets. That bodes well for a good | :09:56. | :10:04.
session in Asia. The yen is cheaper. That is helping shares in Tokyo. | :10:05. | :10:10.
That's all from me. I will see you soon when we look at | :10:11. | :10:17. |
