The trillion dollar tech industry gathers in Las Vegas -

:00:00.:00:26.

in search of the gadgets that will get it growing again.

:00:27.:00:29.

Plus - polarising opinion - we find out what's behind

:00:30.:00:32.

the scramble for lithium - and whether the boom

:00:33.:00:34.

I'm Sally Bundock - also in the programme Alibaba cracks

:00:35.:00:42.

We start in Las Vegas where thousands of technology

:00:43.:00:53.

executives are gathering for the annual Consumer Electronics Show

:00:54.:00:55.

It's the most important event of the year for the tech industry -

:00:56.:01:00.

a chance for companies to show off the gadgets we will,

:01:01.:01:02.

It's a huge business - and also an increasingly tough one.

:01:03.:01:28.

According to the Consumer Technology Association -

:01:29.:01:30.

which organises the Las Vegas show - we will buy gadgets worth close

:01:31.:01:33.

The problem is the industry as a whole is not growing.

:01:34.:01:38.

If it's accurate - that figure would be down around 2%

:01:39.:01:41.

And it would be the the fourth year in a row

:01:42.:01:44.

Smartphones are by far the world's most popular gadget -

:01:45.:01:48.

accounting for half of all tech revenue -

:01:49.:01:50.

but sales are expected to peak this year.

:01:51.:01:52.

Well - it could be the year of wearable technology -

:01:53.:01:57.

Revenues from wearable devices are expected to soar almost a third

:01:58.:02:00.

this year - although still just a fraction of the overall market

:02:01.:02:03.

And one of the biggest themes to watch -

:02:04.:02:06.

artificial intelligence - more and more gadgets

:02:07.:02:07.

are being given the ability to learn.

:02:08.:02:09.

In a penthouse suite at a ritzy Las Vegas hotel, smart home exhibits are

:02:10.:02:16.

on show. There is a smart speakerphone children were each toy

:02:17.:02:26.

is a playlist. A voice activated door lock and upstairs, there is

:02:27.:02:37.

even Nora described as a smart snoring solution. It detects me

:02:38.:02:41.

snoring and moves just enough to stop me without making -- waking me

:02:42.:02:47.

up. The big theme this year is turning the advances in artificial

:02:48.:02:49.

intelligence into products. There are robots. This one is a shop

:02:50.:02:58.

assistant and this one is designed as a companion for children or

:02:59.:03:02.

elderly people. AI seems to get everywhere, even into this

:03:03.:03:04.

toothbrush which learns how you brush your teeth. Artificial

:03:05.:03:08.

intelligence is not just gathering data that is able to use the data.

:03:09.:03:12.

Then you learn where your weaknesses are, where your strengths are and

:03:13.:03:16.

the purpose is to become better at taking care of your oral health.

:03:17.:03:21.

This walking stick is also smarter than it looks. An inbuilt mobile

:03:22.:03:26.

phone Sim card can means you can help if you can have an accident. It

:03:27.:03:31.

can detect the fault of its user and when it detects it, it will alert

:03:32.:03:35.

the family or the neighbour. They can come and help these people. This

:03:36.:03:44.

one helps anyone to try out make up -- this mirror. Out on the Las Vegas

:03:45.:03:49.

strip, Danny Manu, an entrepreneur from Manchester, has just flown in.

:03:50.:03:53.

His interest in translation headphones are not quite ready. They

:03:54.:03:58.

will eventually be tiny earbuds that he is still looking forward to CES.

:03:59.:04:02.

It is really important to us because we will be able to showcase what we

:04:03.:04:07.

are working on to the whole world to show them it is something we started

:04:08.:04:13.

years ago. A small start-up with dedication and passion. The odds are

:04:14.:04:18.

against Danny, a 1-man bands taking on giants like Apple and Google but

:04:19.:04:22.

like plenty of people here, he is betting that he has a product that

:04:23.:04:24.

can change the world. Our tech page on our website is

:04:25.:04:34.

dominated by this event. Rory and others are there. Follow them on

:04:35.:04:35.

Twitter. Staying with technology -

:04:36.:04:37.

and one of the vital commodities used in everything from smartphones

:04:38.:04:39.

to electric cars is becoming Lithium has long been used

:04:40.:04:42.

in batteries for small gadgets - but Lithium Ion batteries are now

:04:43.:04:46.

also the dominant technology for electric vehicles -

:04:47.:04:49.

and there's a scramble On Monday an Australian mining firm

:04:50.:04:51.

sold a deposit of the metal in Mali - West Africa to a Chinese buyer

:04:52.:05:03.

for almost 2000 times what it paid So is this the start

:05:04.:05:07.

of a new commodity boom - Colin Hamilton is head

:05:08.:05:12.

of commodities research This makes it sound like it is all

:05:13.:05:31.

getting out of control. Please put it into perspective. We have seen

:05:32.:05:37.

prices more than double over the course of last year. It is as new

:05:38.:05:41.

energy vehicles and particularly electric vehicles have taken. We

:05:42.:05:45.

have seen a strong growth rate and we are getting close to 1 billion

:05:46.:05:50.

units of sales. That is still just 1.1% of the global auto sales but it

:05:51.:05:54.

is expected to grow further. Looking at 30%. With that, the Chinese in

:05:55.:06:00.

particular, are looking to secure supply because they don't have

:06:01.:06:04.

enough lithium at home. There is also pressure on them to secure

:06:05.:06:09.

supplies. It is because of policy in China, the government is pushing for

:06:10.:06:13.

the use of electric vehicles? Killam China is the largest electric

:06:14.:06:18.

vehicle market. -- China is the largest electric vehicle market.

:06:19.:06:26.

They have been using cheap batteries thus far but now they are pushing

:06:27.:06:32.

towards higher technology batteries. They need a higher lithium content

:06:33.:06:36.

per battery. They need to secure the display -- supply. 80% of the

:06:37.:06:42.

lithium comes from Chile, Argentina and Australia. You can eat extracted

:06:43.:06:50.

low cost in Argentina. In Australia it is from rock so it is more

:06:51.:06:54.

technologically difficult to process but it is also much nearer to China

:06:55.:07:00.

and more accessible. In terms of those countries, Chile, Argentina,

:07:01.:07:09.

they will be exporting it to China? China wants to buy the raw material.

:07:10.:07:16.

They will let them process it into batteries. China wants to control as

:07:17.:07:19.

much as the technological value chain as they can. The process won't

:07:20.:07:24.

change. Yes, you will be selling lithium to China. Very interesting.

:07:25.:07:28.

Thank you for coming in and sharing your expertise will stop we will

:07:29.:07:29.

keep an eye on this year. To Asia now and ecommerce giant

from under 28 dollars a barrel a year ago to 55 dollars this month.

increased UK fuel prices, as oil is priced in dollars.
