The final stop on the wheelchair tennis circuit is RGB the most

:00:18.:00:25.

important. The world's top eight men, top eight when an art here at

:00:26.:00:28.

the Wheelchair Tennis Masters. It is a competition only for the best of

:00:29.:00:31.

the best and Britain have six of those competing here this week. Look

:00:32.:00:39.

at backroad on Henman Hill, everyone waving, fabulous exposure for

:00:40.:00:44.

wheelchair tennis. The state of British tennis at the moment, it's

:00:45.:00:53.

going from strength to strength. We've got players exceeding in all

:00:54.:00:57.

the divisions, we've just come home from the most successful Paralympics

:00:58.:01:01.

that we've ever had in wheelchair tennis. Steyn Gordon is going to the

:01:02.:01:09.

end of your number world one to make history, Alfie Hewitt is coming up

:01:10.:01:13.

the game real quick. He's deftly going to be someone to look out for.

:01:14.:01:22.

It's just amazing to see. Steyn cauliflower can keep that going and

:01:23.:01:25.

bring through as much new talent as possible. It's good to see British

:01:26.:01:32.

tennis with top players. It's exciting times ahead. I'm here with

:01:33.:01:41.

Lucy Shuker, double Paralympic medallist and understand of all

:01:42.:01:44.

things wheelchair tennis. However you? Very well thanks. There's

:01:45.:01:50.

competition in particular, the Masters, how big a competition is

:01:51.:01:55.

this? After Brazil, it's got to be the top tournament of the year. We

:01:56.:02:00.

are here to try and take that end of year singles title, the doubles one

:02:01.:02:03.

just happened a few weeks ago out in California, this is the end of years

:02:04.:02:09.

single one. The men's, women's and the quads. Can you explain to us

:02:10.:02:13.

what the quad division means? The quad division is done on... Four

:02:14.:02:20.

players moving on three or more limbs. It's done on a points

:02:21.:02:23.

classification system is there is points for the racket hand,

:02:24.:02:29.

non-racket hand. Looking at the men's, you've got Gordon Reid in

:02:30.:02:33.

there, a big name, done a lot this last 12 months. What's he going to

:02:34.:02:38.

be expecting from this competition? We all know that Stephan and Gordon

:02:39.:02:45.

are two players fighting for their end of your number world one spot.

:02:46.:02:49.

It's very similar to the ATP tennis finals with Murray and Djokovic in

:02:50.:02:54.

the setup and the way they're going to be meeting. Whoever wins out of

:02:55.:02:59.

Stephan and Gordon, the going to be the end of year world number one

:03:00.:03:02.

survey will be fighting for that spot. This is what Gordon Reid had

:03:03.:03:07.

to say when I caught up with him. Are used to play tennis before I was

:03:08.:03:15.

in hospital and in my condition. It was a really important part of my

:03:16.:03:20.

rehab and by recovery. It was really important and helped me deal with

:03:21.:03:25.

having a disability and sports give me the outlet that should America

:03:26.:03:32.

get my life back again and showed me that it's not the end of the world.

:03:33.:03:36.

You always have doubts and worries that you're never going to win a

:03:37.:03:42.

Grand Slam, I got my first final in a Grand Slam in Australia. I won

:03:43.:03:47.

that. I was 24 and I'd done that. That was one thing I could kick off

:03:48.:03:50.

the list and that was pressure away from me straightaway. That gave me

:03:51.:03:54.

the freedom to go to Wimbledon and reach the final there, enjoy

:03:55.:04:03.

fulfilling my tail to dream of playing singles there. He's got it!

:04:04.:04:09.

Look at what it means to them. The first ever Wimbledon singles

:04:10.:04:16.

champion, Scotland's Gordon Reid. Steyn winning silver with Alfie in

:04:17.:04:21.

doubles. It was unbelievable. Still can't believe it happened. How do

:04:22.:04:26.

you deal with the pressure of knowing that there is people looking

:04:27.:04:33.

at you as inspiration? I don't really see that as a pressure, I see

:04:34.:04:39.

that as an honour almost. If I can inspire one kid who's feeling a

:04:40.:04:46.

similar way to me to come and try tennis, comically might not play

:04:47.:04:50.

professionally, they might not play internationally, but if the sport

:04:51.:04:53.

can give them what it gave to me on any level, then that's worth just as

:04:54.:05:00.

much as any title and to me. We're really lucky to have the single

:05:01.:05:03.

Masters here for the last three years, everybody wants to win it. I

:05:04.:05:08.

love playing in front of my home crowd and hopefully the standard is

:05:09.:05:12.

high and we can showcase the sport to new people. Gordon was unbeaten

:05:13.:05:20.

in the group stages but faced Stephane Houdet in the semifinal.

:05:21.:05:26.

The winner also ended up the world number one. Gordon Reid know has a

:05:27.:05:35.

chance to close this match out. Quicker than we had into debated.

:05:36.:05:44.

5-1, one game away from reaching the final. Becoming the world number one

:05:45.:05:48.

for the second time this year. The match we thought we'd see in the

:05:49.:06:18.

final, Houdet lost in the previous round, Gordon didn't. That's why

:06:19.:06:22.

we've got this match in the semi, world number one against world

:06:23.:06:24.

number two which will be reversed very soon. Double fault.

:06:25.:07:06.

Not going to get that one back. That was great defence by Gardiner. Right

:07:07.:07:14.

in the back of the court, Phil Reach and then he got a short ball from

:07:15.:07:21.

Houdet and even with Houdet's strength, with that. She didn't get

:07:22.:07:33.

it. Patients. Signature shot by Gordon. Reverse backhand, lovely.

:07:34.:07:45.

Smashed it. We are around the hour mark and two match points for Gordon

:07:46.:07:46.

Reid. Ultimately, that will be his last

:07:47.:08:22.

shot. Gordon Reid, once again, blamed his position as being the

:08:23.:08:27.

world number one in wheelchair tennis. A comprehensive victory as

:08:28.:08:34.

the world number one as he must be called now. 6-2, 6-1, and

:08:35.:08:41.

obliteration by Gordon Reed of Stephane Houdet today. A fantastic

:08:42.:08:47.

result there for Gordon Reid, number one and through to the final. Also

:08:48.:08:52.

hoping to make the final of the quad division is Andy Lapthorne. I spoke

:08:53.:09:00.

to him earlier in the competition. Is it fair to say you're an

:09:01.:09:04.

emotional player, good and bad, you wear your heart on your sleeve? If

:09:05.:09:08.

you watch Andy Murray on TV, a lot of people compare me to some of his

:09:09.:09:12.

reactions. When you're in that moment, you don't realise what

:09:13.:09:16.

you're doing, I don't anyway. Sometimes I do cringe but it means

:09:17.:09:21.

so much to me. Your first big result after being classified in the quad

:09:22.:09:27.

in 2008, you won the doubles with Pete Norfolk in 2012. We were the

:09:28.:09:34.

number one team in the world, we had beaten everyone, it was a bit of a

:09:35.:09:39.

disappointment. If you look at the pictures of me on the podium, I was

:09:40.:09:42.

crying because we should have won that. No disrespect anybody that was

:09:43.:09:51.

there. Two years later, at your first US slam singles, what was that

:09:52.:09:55.

like going from winning in the doubles to a big win on your own?

:09:56.:10:00.

That was special to go there in America, New York, please would you

:10:01.:10:07.

love so much, going there as in number three seed and then managing

:10:08.:10:10.

to the American number one in the final, which was perfect. 2012,

:10:11.:10:16.

winning doubles, 24 team, winning singles, then Brazil, you got both,

:10:17.:10:21.

to go out and make the final of the singles. That was a crazy match

:10:22.:10:27.

against David. He had a winning record over me, it was amazing. To

:10:28.:10:33.

win that bronze in doubles after four hours and 25 minutes, the

:10:34.:10:37.

longest match in Paralympic history in any sport, I've been told, was

:10:38.:10:42.

extra special. Tell me a little bit about the competition that here.

:10:43.:10:47.

This is the end of year tour finals, our version of the able bodied

:10:48.:10:52.

event, all the best players are here. This is the one that everyone

:10:53.:10:55.

wants to win the end of the year, the big title, for me it's a very

:10:56.:11:00.

special one taking Place in used London. I will be looking to try and

:11:01.:11:06.

take on the title. With one Brit in the men's final, could Andy make it

:11:07.:11:10.

to bike taking his place in the quad final? COMMENTATOR: Catie Munnings

:11:11.:11:22.

never been in this position before. -- never been in this position

:11:23.:11:30.

before. Here he is in completely uncharted territory, 5-4 in the

:11:31.:11:37.

second. Can't get a first serve in for love nor money.

:11:38.:11:49.

Some nerves there. Three points needed to win a match. It's only

:11:50.:12:00.

three points, it looks so close but it can also be so far away. Taking

:12:01.:12:08.

his time on his first set this time as well. It's a good first serve.

:12:09.:12:20.

Then he was forced to push back. He couldn't finish it.

:12:21.:12:36.

That it! That said, that's all he needs. It's very simple. This is

:12:37.:12:49.

really nice, not too close to the lines, not too much risk and still

:12:50.:12:59.

enough pace to give Italy no chance. That is a nice ball. This is

:13:00.:13:08.

impressive. Just look at the angle on this. He had to beat really,

:13:09.:13:12.

really above his shoulder. Not much you can do about that.

:13:13.:13:26.

This is tough, it's going to be difficult. We've arrived at match

:13:27.:13:38.

point for Erenlib, the first meeting these two. He's had a chance to win.

:13:39.:13:40.

Here it comes. It's always the toughest point,

:13:41.:14:02.

isn't it? That was quite tentative. From the Israeli. He gave Lapthorne

:14:03.:14:11.

a lifeline. High balls, deep balls. Now he's

:14:12.:14:51.

coming for word. -- coming for word. He was a bit too passive in that

:14:52.:15:14.

round until the very end. He got the result he was looking for.

:15:15.:15:26.

Will it work this time? It to do, we will see. A break point to make it

:15:27.:15:32.

5-5, second set, you need this. Then you have it all in your hands

:15:33.:15:58.

and give it away like this. And now what's happening in that hand, I

:15:59.:16:03.

wonder? You will know a bit more after we've seen this point, I

:16:04.:16:05.

think. Back to Gers. Good serve. Erenlib finding a good

:16:06.:16:27.

first serve exactly when he needed it then. Now for the second time at

:16:28.:16:35.

the is really has match point. -- the Israeli.

:16:36.:16:50.

I was just about to say double but I thought I better not. I just had a

:16:51.:16:58.

feeling a double was coming there. How many lifelines is he going to

:16:59.:17:04.

give Lapthorne? Second match point comes, second match point goes and

:17:05.:17:07.

this match is still active. That's nice. You expected it to be a

:17:08.:17:49.

crosscourt and he did. Third match point. Will this be it? Last time we

:17:50.:17:57.

had a double fault. Can he find a first serve? Can he put Lapthorne

:17:58.:18:12.

under pressure? The answer is yes! The eighth time of asking, Erenlib

:18:13.:18:24.

beats Andy Lapthorne. For the most part, the is really want care

:18:25.:18:29.

because he is beauty meeting David Waggoner in the final. That was just

:18:30.:18:35.

about as comprehensive as that score line suggests. 6-2, 6-4,

:18:36.:18:41.

disappointment for the home crowd, great celebrations for the Israelis.

:18:42.:18:51.

I played horrible, I had bad luck here in 2012, I don't play well

:18:52.:18:54.

every time I come back here. It's just one of those things were

:18:55.:18:57.

sometimes you go somewhere and it just doesn't work out. For me,

:18:58.:19:03.

unfortunately, it's at home in London where I come here and I just

:19:04.:19:07.

can't play. Who knows? I'm just glad that I didn't play like that in

:19:08.:19:11.

Brazil, to be honest. That was my only thought when I was playing.

:19:12.:19:14.

Thank God I didn't play like this in Brazil. I just seemed to not be able

:19:15.:19:21.

to play well here. It is what it is. Onto the next one, it's tough to

:19:22.:19:25.

take. I had a lot of people come here to support me, it's

:19:26.:19:27.

disappointing. There's nothing you can do. Not the result and it would

:19:28.:19:33.

have wanted but it was enough however to guarantee a place in the

:19:34.:19:38.

first of the Grand Slams in 2017, the Australian Open. Talking of

:19:39.:19:42.

Grand Slams, I caught up with some...

:19:43.:19:53.

There is a much bigger spectrum of disability involved in wheelchair

:19:54.:19:58.

tennis. Does that Nicky difference to the quality and standard of the

:19:59.:20:03.

players at the top? It's a good thing in wheelchair tennis that you

:20:04.:20:07.

only have two divisions, there is one quad division of people that

:20:08.:20:11.

have an pyramid on upper body and there is this other division which

:20:12.:20:17.

has all different kinds of disabilities from paralysis,

:20:18.:20:20.

amputees, people that have something to their hips. I guess because of

:20:21.:20:26.

that and because it's all put in one division, the quality of the game

:20:27.:20:32.

has gone up and be people that play has gone up. That's a good thing. On

:20:33.:20:37.

the other hand, you also see that the less disabled people will

:20:38.:20:42.

probably be the ones that are more successful than the more disabled

:20:43.:20:47.

people. And so, some opinions are but that's not equal and not fair. I

:20:48.:20:55.

guess in sport it hard anyways to say it's there because some people

:20:56.:20:59.

are strong, some people are little, some people are big, there is going

:21:00.:21:03.

to be differences all the time. If anybody is looking to get involved

:21:04.:21:07.

in wheelchair tennis, what advice would you give them? Wheelchair

:21:08.:21:10.

tennis is one of the sport she can play every level, any level with

:21:11.:21:15.

everybody or anybody. It could be with other disabled people, it could

:21:16.:21:20.

also be with your friends, your family, on a court outdoors,

:21:21.:21:25.

injuries, whether you want it on a high level or a recreational level,

:21:26.:21:31.

it is all possible. The fact that you can play it from whenever you

:21:32.:21:35.

are eight years old up until your 88, that's the good thing of tennis

:21:36.:21:40.

and then, besides that, I love tennis because it's not only a

:21:41.:21:45.

physical sport, is also a mental sport, tactical, very technical,

:21:46.:21:48.

that makes it difficult. Very challenging at the same time. Ten

:21:49.:21:53.

years undefeated in any sport in any discipline is a massive, massive

:21:54.:21:57.

achievement. When you look back at that period of your life, either any

:21:58.:22:02.

moment they're really stand out for you? There is one moment that stays

:22:03.:22:06.

in my mind forever, probably, and that would be the Paralympic final

:22:07.:22:17.

in 2008 in Beijing. I was playing a girl from a country he was my

:22:18.:22:21.

biggest rival and then in that final in the gold medal match she had a

:22:22.:22:25.

match point and then in some way I finally turned it around and won the

:22:26.:22:29.

gold medal. I guess that match will stand out forever because that was

:22:30.:22:37.

just a tense match. Lucy, it's obvious to see she is such an

:22:38.:22:41.

amazing athlete. Did you see her as a role model yourself? To be honest,

:22:42.:22:47.

she had a 470 match winning streak, pretty much the whole time I was

:22:48.:22:51.

playing wheelchair tennis from and I started to when she retired in 2012

:22:52.:22:57.

or after the Olympics, Paralympics, she didn't lose a singles match and

:22:58.:23:01.

that's phenomenal. But she's not just a tennis player, she's a

:23:02.:23:05.

fantastic person on Court, on Court, off court, polite to officials,

:23:06.:23:11.

team-mates, two opponents, just a fantastic overall person. Someone

:23:12.:23:14.

else who's been inspiring is Gordon Reid. What a year for him. From the

:23:15.:23:19.

start of the year winning that title at the Australian Open, it's given

:23:20.:23:22.

him the confidence to go forward. Winning the gold again in Rio, huge

:23:23.:23:27.

screen to bring that confidence street here into the Masters. He is

:23:28.:23:30.

playing very attacking, serving really well, moving really well and

:23:31.:23:36.

he's just a formidable person to be caught on to play against. What you

:23:37.:23:38.

think it will mean to him winning year? Yell it would just top his

:23:39.:23:45.

year off. He is no end of year number one but he's going to want

:23:46.:23:50.

this Masters title. It's not as straightforward as that, he's got a

:23:51.:23:57.

big volunteer. Gerard is a big player, big server, take the ball

:23:58.:24:00.

early on the return. He is going to be that a tonne away from Gordon.

:24:01.:24:05.

The last time these have met head-to-head it's been nine times to

:24:06.:24:09.

Gordon and eight times to Gerard, what do you think this time it?

:24:10.:24:12.

There's not much in it. He's going to come in it from winning the gold

:24:13.:24:17.

at Rio, Gerard is going to come in your knowing he is defending

:24:18.:24:19.

champion but knows that the core service release its him. There is

:24:20.:24:23.

not much in it between these two. Lets see how it goes. It was a

:24:24.:24:30.

scrappy start to the final. We join the match in the latter stages of

:24:31.:24:33.

the first set with both players struggling to hold their serif. --

:24:34.:24:37.

serve. COMMENTATOR: Just overdoing it. I

:24:38.:25:07.

think that's probably what he's thinking he's going to start doing.

:25:08.:25:13.

He needs to start applying some pressure to Gordon and Gordon wants

:25:14.:25:19.

this title quite a lot and at the same time, Gerard wants to defend

:25:20.:25:27.

his title. Who has got the confidence to go... Gerard is

:25:28.:25:34.

wanting to take the ball earlier, he's got to be effective with it.

:25:35.:25:58.

A little over heckling by the Belgian at the moment. He's halfway

:25:59.:26:04.

out the court as well, that's why. He has made a conscious effort to go

:26:05.:26:09.

in the closer to hit the ball earlier, take the time away from

:26:10.:26:12.

Gordon that actually has rolled insofar, he is now over hitting by

:26:13.:26:18.

Amy serif. Here he comes again. What a great return.

:26:19.:26:36.

You can never tell. He can be utterly amazing and then, you never

:26:37.:26:47.

know, as I said before it is the end of the season and some of these

:26:48.:26:51.

players, particularly Paralympic season, it's a very long road and

:26:52.:26:55.

they are all looking forward to having a break for a few weeks

:26:56.:27:00.

before the start all over again. Christmas and New Year and then

:27:01.:27:03.

straight back and do it again for another 11 months. They will still

:27:04.:27:11.

be drug tested though, out of competition drug testing. That's

:27:12.:27:17.

lovely, that is a great forehand and Gordon Reid has now come to life.

:27:18.:27:21.

That is the kind of shot that can spur him on. Look at that. Smacking

:27:22.:27:26.

it back to each other, backhand to forehand, forehand to backhand, and

:27:27.:27:40.

then a great play. What great hands. He had that in his armoury as well,

:27:41.:27:48.

Gerard, there is another three. It's heating up, isn't it? Is heating up.

:27:49.:27:52.

Just long. Brilliant. There you go.

:27:53.:28:08.

Back-to-back forehands from Gordon Reid and nothing, even the long

:28:09.:28:16.

reach of Gerard could do about that. It was quite a good serve, straight

:28:17.:28:20.

into Gordon's forehand and Gordon was rolling into it on the baseline.

:28:21.:28:28.

Lovely forehand. Gerard has got to give a bit more width on his serve

:28:29.:28:32.

is, he's either going to go his served above the white one. That is

:28:33.:28:41.

a great second serve. With a second serve like that, perhaps he doesn't

:28:42.:28:47.

need to. That makes his percentage go down severely for the Belgian.

:28:48.:28:50.

Two saved. Great first serve. You really took

:28:51.:29:06.

the pressure off himself there, it had pace on it, depth, everything,

:29:07.:29:08.

going out the sidelines. He's got it, two bounces is allowed.

:29:09.:29:46.

Great defence by Gordon. Yes he can! The answer is yes, it he can. Gordon

:29:47.:29:52.

Reid was not in that rally for a large part of it but still wins the

:29:53.:29:58.

point. Gerard made a fatal error there he thought he was going back

:29:59.:30:01.

behind Gordon is that final backhand and it went straight into Gordon's

:30:02.:30:06.

forehand and he flashed it down the side for a winner. Just been

:30:07.:30:13.

nullified again by a superb ace. Come on.

:30:14.:30:34.

In a position where Gerard could barely move, couldn't get to it such

:30:35.:30:43.

was the speed of that return. Yeah, didn't do enough on the serve.

:30:44.:30:47.

They both know they've got to put something on the second serve, they

:30:48.:30:49.

can't just put it in. A clever shot by Reid. Hit it

:30:50.:31:01.

straight back at Gerard. Gerard pulled back on his wheels to get out

:31:02.:31:05.

of the way but it wasn't enough. It's turning into the final we hoped

:31:06.:31:23.

it would be. Yeah. Just so you know you have to make sure you have to

:31:24.:31:30.

make sure the wheel doesn't touch the baseline, it's a wheel fault,

:31:31.:31:33.

same as a foot fault. No wheel touched the line. The lines people

:31:34.:31:38.

are pretty hot on that. Watching the quads, the serves were coming from

:31:39.:31:42.

way behind the baseline. Yeah, some of the quads do that, they sit a

:31:43.:31:47.

long way back to give themselves more time to react. Often hands are

:31:48.:31:52.

strapped to the racquet because they have limited grip, so less power and

:31:53.:31:55.

pace than these guys. Gordon has taken that so early. He

:31:56.:32:05.

did. Didn't even allow it to bounce really. It was in the process of

:32:06.:32:10.

bouncing when he took it. Nullified the bounce and got the

:32:11.:32:14.

ball back in play and rapidly he has the 40-0. Looks like his confidence

:32:15.:32:18.

is coming through, which is super to see.

:32:19.:32:33.

Just looking at my notes from Rio. Fastest serve, 147 from Reid in the

:32:34.:32:42.

final. He is a big strong lad. When they want to they can pump those

:32:43.:32:48.

serves down the tee. On this surface actually that would be quite a good

:32:49.:32:55.

tactic because it comes through so fast. He comes through that

:32:56.:33:02.

relatively unskwaited. The serve of both men definitely under pressure.

:33:03.:33:16.

He is still overhiting. Gerard giving a bit too much oomph on some

:33:17.:33:24.

of these shots at the moment. Yeah, I think also Gordon came in, made

:33:25.:33:28.

the play that Gerard had to think he had to do more than he really needed

:33:29.:33:29.

to. Oh, beautiful. Wow, what a backhand

:33:30.:33:53.

by Reid. Right at the back of the court. He is not just about

:33:54.:33:57.

forehands. A couple of beauties in there, but a backhand, as well.

:33:58.:34:01.

Superb, look at that. Using the wrist to get it out of the side

:34:02.:34:05.

lines. Not a hope to get that back. Fabulous shot.

:34:06.:34:15.

He's missed it. Now one point away from the set.

:34:16.:34:23.

Gordon Reid now on the verge of taking the first set.

:34:24.:34:28.

It's not going to make Gerard feel very comfortable at all. He is going

:34:29.:34:37.

to get quite angry with himself. Second serve, you have to attack

:34:38.:34:39.

this, Mr Reid. Come on, move in. Gordon Reid does take the first set

:34:40.:34:57.

having come from behind on breaks a few times, but ultimately gets the

:34:58.:34:59.

job done by 6-4. Reid takes the first set but as

:35:00.:35:09.

neither player can dominate the championships is still very much up

:35:10.:35:10.

for grabs. That's the first point on the serve

:35:11.:35:41.

for three games. Now Gerard gets in front in a game he needs to win.

:35:42.:35:48.

And he is on his way to winning it. And levelling this match up.

:35:49.:35:56.

Two more points and he will be there. It's a super point. You can

:35:57.:36:01.

see he leans forward. The strap is keeping him in his chair nice and

:36:02.:36:06.

solid and he hits a lovely rolled backhand down the line.

:36:07.:36:12.

Great technical play. Isn't Gerard one of these players that plays or

:36:13.:36:24.

was trained at the Justin Henin Academy in Belgium? Nice play. We

:36:25.:36:32.

have seen some artistry from the Belgian, from time to time.

:36:33.:36:38.

Sliced drop shots, super little shot. Three set points for the world

:36:39.:36:41.

number three. Nicely played.

:36:42.:37:00.

There is that forehand when he needs it. Not down the line this time, the

:37:01.:37:05.

forehand cross-court. Yeah. The shot just before that Gordon hit it

:37:06.:37:08.

really deep to the baseline and Gerard was sitting on the baseline

:37:09.:37:13.

and didn't really do enough with his return that allowed Gordon to hit

:37:14.:37:19.

that for a winner. Two set points still.

:37:20.:37:25.

Only one now. Seen that coming, didn't do enough

:37:26.:37:34.

on his serve. It was a good serve but it wasn't deep enough and wasn't

:37:35.:37:38.

hard enough and wasn't in the right location.

:37:39.:37:43.

Gordon just wheeled in and went thank you, I will take that for a

:37:44.:37:52.

winner. That's gone long. It goes long. And Gerard levels the match

:37:53.:37:56.

up. We go into the third set and Gordon

:37:57.:38:03.

has left himself a lot of work to do if he wants to win this Masters

:38:04.:38:04.

title. Now, is there any way back for

:38:05.:38:10.

Gordon Reid? Not like that. He has to be more

:38:11.:38:26.

positive. He's taken the pace off his shots. He needs to just up the

:38:27.:38:32.

intensity and pace again. He has nothing to lose now, he is 4-0 down.

:38:33.:38:37.

It's pointless hitting it to Gerard because Gerard is playing too well

:38:38.:38:43.

at the moment. Attack.

:38:44.:38:50.

There's such contrast to the match on Saturday where he dominated from

:38:51.:38:57.

the start pretty much. Yes, you are absolutely right. Here he is playing

:38:58.:39:02.

- Gerard fades in and out, but Gordon is trying to play an even

:39:03.:39:08.

game. I think he needs to up his intensity more, put more pace on the

:39:09.:39:13.

ball. Take the time away from Gerard. A nice serve. But a brave

:39:14.:39:18.

return. Goodness me! Did everything he could

:39:19.:39:22.

do with that serve but it came back with interest. It was a fabulous

:39:23.:39:27.

reverse backhand cross-court. Pinpoint accuracy.

:39:28.:39:39.

No, missed it. He might be facing a break point

:39:40.:39:48.

again. But he has a point to get on the board in set number three.

:39:49.:40:11.

Not done yet. No, a bit of a serve straight into

:40:12.:40:19.

Gerard and Gerard really poked it back down the line and again on this

:40:20.:40:24.

surface, if you are not moving the chair, it pops away for a winner.

:40:25.:40:49.

Haven't had too many of those for Reid recently. UMPIRE: Advantage

:40:50.:40:55.

Reid. Nice. Got it back, though.

:40:56.:41:30.

Another dropped shot. Playing like a violin.

:41:31.:41:53.

He would have loved to have an easy straightforward service game, but

:41:54.:41:56.

can't get any rhythm. No, it's not going to happen. He has to be

:41:57.:42:00.

careful because this set is - it happens sometimes, you play a match

:42:01.:42:05.

and before you know it you are 4-0 down and trying to reverse those

:42:06.:42:10.

figures is really difficult. In trouble now.

:42:11.:42:18.

Lobbed again. It's gone wide. You can't rely on

:42:19.:42:21.

your opponent making mistakes. Absolutely not. Gordon has to be

:42:22.:42:26.

positive. He is not being positive enough.

:42:27.:42:38.

At last. The crowd have been very, very quiet, they've had nothing to

:42:39.:42:49.

cheer. I don't know what Gordon is going to do. I just think he's been

:42:50.:42:53.

asleep for about four games. He needs a break. He needs two of

:42:54.:43:08.

them. It's all possible. The set is not

:43:09.:43:19.

gone until it's gone. Trying to hook that one around.

:43:20.:43:31.

Just gave it a little bit too much. Gordon has to take his errors out.

:43:32.:43:37.

Take the error out and he can win this game. 4-2 and then he is

:43:38.:43:47.

serving and you are back on. Simple sitting here saying that! He missed

:43:48.:43:51.

it. Dropped shot from behind the baseline is always difficult to pull

:43:52.:43:54.

off. Yeah, it is but Gerard has already done that a couple of times

:43:55.:43:57.

in this match but that was just... Gordon went for that forehand return

:43:58.:44:21.

but he missed it. Hit the top of the net. Needs a miracle now. Yeah, if

:44:22.:44:29.

Gerard gets this serve and goes 5-1 I can't see him coming back really.

:44:30.:44:33.

Yeah, and he has. He has opened up a four-game

:44:34.:44:40.

advantage, yet again. Now it's 1-5. He is in sight of retaining his

:44:41.:44:47.

title. And preventing Gordon from winning his first Masters title at

:44:48.:44:52.

the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. The crowd still believe they

:44:53.:44:58.

can urge him over the line but it will take a huge effort from here. I

:44:59.:45:03.

think we will see Gerard - he has nothing to lose, he will attack all

:45:04.:45:09.

these serves now. Even if he makes a mistake like that, he still has to

:45:10.:45:12.

put pressure on Gordon. Great return. A terrific return.

:45:13.:45:29.

Really good return. Just when he needs to add some more. Look where

:45:30.:45:34.

Gerard is now hitting his return of serve. A metre inside the baseline.

:45:35.:45:38.

And again. Oh, missed it! Like you said he is

:45:39.:45:42.

going to go for broke. That's what he is doing. Some will come off.

:45:43.:45:46.

Some won't. He will want to finish it here, put pressure on. It's easy

:45:47.:45:50.

to win the match with a return serve than it is to serve it out.

:45:51.:45:56.

Keeping Reid in the match for the time being, those errors.

:45:57.:46:01.

Not too many smiles around at the moment.

:46:02.:46:18.

Well played. Looked like it was going to go wide. The top spin

:46:19.:46:28.

brought it in. He kept his composure and at least stays in the match.

:46:29.:46:39.

Reid has to try and read the serve of Gerard or it's all over. Doesn't

:46:40.:46:51.

A double to start off with. It's the hardest game to win, to

:46:52.:47:04.

finish a match, when it's as prestigious as this, this is the

:47:05.:47:10.

toughest game to win. This point, this point, this point, that's the

:47:11.:47:15.

mantra. Pick your spot. He is overpressing a little bit. He is

:47:16.:47:20.

trying to hit it too hard. Just pick it.

:47:21.:47:23.

12 aces. Six double faults. He is the defending champion, he so wants

:47:24.:47:41.

to do that, take some of the fame and glory off Gordon.

:47:42.:47:46.

A good serve. Just got it in. That was playing with the margins. Didn't

:47:47.:47:55.

have to be that tight to the line. Well, it did because out of your

:47:56.:47:59.

picture Gordon came flying back in because he read where the ball was

:48:00.:48:05.

going to go. They're such small courts, a lot of the courts are much

:48:06.:48:10.

bigger, that would have come back. And that one does.

:48:11.:48:21.

APPLAUSE That's the most animated the crowd

:48:22.:48:24.

have been for a while. Two break points. Is the Gordon comeback about

:48:25.:48:30.

to begin here? A good comeback too, if it is.

:48:31.:48:35.

Of course it would be 6-6, that takes us to a tie-break.

:48:36.:48:42.

There is that serve I was saying about earlier. That's his favourite

:48:43.:48:48.

serve. He wants the ball back, as well. It's amazing the superstitions

:48:49.:48:57.

of players, it's a ball. Doesn't have special, magical qualities.

:48:58.:48:59.

It's the ace ball! OK. The rolled forehand goes wide. Now

:49:00.:49:17.

he is two points away. Playing dangerous game, Gordon Reid.

:49:18.:49:24.

He has to attack the second serve, put the pressure back on the server.

:49:25.:49:39.

Right on the line. Just on the right side. It's a super

:49:40.:49:43.

flashing backhand. Such a great shot he has got there.

:49:44.:49:51.

Ace number 14. There is a bit of a pattern there.

:49:52.:50:00.

Gerard goes down the T and goes on the first serve goes out wide.

:50:01.:50:09.

Oh! It's just in. He doesn't think so.

:50:10.:50:20.

Gerard doesn't think so. The linesman called it in. Let's

:50:21.:50:28.

have a look. The dropped shot wasn't good enough on two bounces. . Look,

:50:29.:50:33.

the linesman called that in. It's the opposite side from the umpire so

:50:34.:50:38.

he can't really overrule. That's going to upset Gerard.

:50:39.:50:45.

Here comes a double. I shouldn't say that!

:50:46.:50:52.

Mystic Pete. Well played. No! He put it wide.

:50:53.:50:59.

That was right on his racquet, as well. He read the play, he had the

:51:00.:51:06.

shot. Just couldn't keep it in the bounds of the court.

:51:07.:51:10.

He needs a good second serve here again.

:51:11.:51:24.

A double. Seven. Just shaking the arm. Get the nerves

:51:25.:51:33.

out. Needs to be loose, loose as a goose.

:51:34.:51:46.

That was a complete mis-hit from Reid. Absolutely. But Gerard had

:51:47.:51:56.

come in, he is inside the baseline and really had a volley and could

:51:57.:51:59.

have... He decided to boost it and it went long.

:52:00.:52:07.

He is still in it. That's one of the two breaks he needs. Needs to hold

:52:08.:52:10.

on to his serve or we don't go any further.

:52:11.:52:12.

That's a good lob. Yeah, all set up for that brilliant

:52:13.:52:27.

lob. Are we seeing the see-saw again?

:52:28.:52:33.

Backwards and forwards points. One player playing well, then the other

:52:34.:52:34.

one isn't. Now the other one is. Terrific serve.

:52:35.:52:46.

Where has this Gordon Reid been? Didn't see him in the first part of

:52:47.:52:52.

the third set. The pressure has been taken off him. Now he can play. He

:52:53.:52:57.

has absolutely nothing to lose. Andering everything to gain.

:52:58.:53:02.

All the pressure has gone back on Gerard, who is the defending

:53:03.:53:07.

champion. His game's gone apart. He thought he had it in the bag, and

:53:08.:53:12.

now not. He was two points away from winning

:53:13.:53:14.

it. Easily put away. Have to do that a

:53:15.:53:36.

few more times, though. Yeah, lovely volley. As soon as you

:53:37.:53:41.

come into the net like that, keep nice and tight. Sit up straight and

:53:42.:53:47.

just poke the ball over the net for a winner.

:53:48.:53:57.

Oh! Again a double - questioning from Gerard. But the linesman

:53:58.:54:07.

answering in the affirmative as far as Reid's concerned. He was four

:54:08.:54:10.

games behind. He is now one game behind.

:54:11.:54:24.

What a fabulous shot. Brilliant backhand by the Belgian. That will

:54:25.:54:31.

calm the nerves. Smooth, picked his spot. Saw the gap. What a fabulous

:54:32.:54:36.

backhand down the line there. Reid needs to make sure he plays

:54:37.:54:53.

every single ball. There aren't too many more options.

:54:54.:54:55.

Again two points away from winning. Three match points for the defending

:54:56.:55:16.

champion. Winner of 2015 on the verge of doing it in again the world

:55:17.:55:23.

number three has match point. There is no Masters title to add to

:55:24.:55:47.

the Wimbledon and Paralympic title for Gordon Reid. It's back-to-back

:55:48.:55:54.

Masters wins for the Belgian Joachim Gerard. He comes through, conceding

:55:55.:55:56.

the first set. Brilliant serving along the way and

:55:57.:56:02.

he kept his game together when Gordon Reid couldn't in set number

:56:03.:56:09.

three. It is the Belgian who takes the

:56:10.:56:13.

applause and plaudits of the crowd and upsets the world number one in

:56:14.:56:20.

their final head-to-head. It means the head-to-head is now

:56:21.:56:25.

nine each. Three wins out of four now for Reid

:56:26.:56:31.

in recent encounters. I think my serving let me down a little bit

:56:32.:56:35.

today. Those two been my two biggest strengths this week so far. Really

:56:36.:56:41.

important on this surface and I probably did the worst today, when

:56:42.:56:45.

you can't get a good start to the rallies, then a good start to the

:56:46.:56:49.

point, then it's difficult to get into the match on this surface,

:56:50.:56:53.

especially when Jo is serving well. Disappointed with that. It's been a

:56:54.:56:58.

brilliant year. Today doesn't change that. I have to try and forget about

:56:59.:57:03.

that performance today because it was disappointing but when I reflect

:57:04.:57:07.

on the year, obviously really happy with everything that's gone on.

:57:08.:57:11.

Going to have good memories that I will cherish forever from 2016. I

:57:12.:57:16.

knew Gordon was the man to beat. Many people told me that I was, we

:57:17.:57:19.

were two men here who could play very well and Gordon was man of the

:57:20.:57:25.

year, he shows it and I know it will not be easy. I am happy about that

:57:26.:57:38.

win that I could be number two. Disappointing finish for Gordon and

:57:39.:57:41.

not the result we would have wanted. Yeah, I think he is going to be very

:57:42.:57:45.

disappointed with that one. I think he knew that the match was going to

:57:46.:57:50.

be tough. Jochim taking the ball so early and he took his chances in

:57:51.:57:54.

that third set. Tricking the ball early, putting it down the line.

:57:55.:57:59.

Going for that cross-court to Gordon's forehand was punishing him.

:58:00.:58:04.

Gordon was punishing him. Every time he changed it up he was winning the

:58:05.:58:06.

point and he obviously realised that. You could see the strength in

:58:07.:58:14.

Joachim's serve. He is a big guy, probably 6ft plus so he has a good

:58:15.:58:17.

serve and when it's on it's difficult to read and to return it.

:58:18.:58:21.

When he managed to get that working really well. How do you think Gordon

:58:22.:58:26.

will bounce back? He obviously would have wanted the title. He is going

:58:27.:58:29.

to end the year on world number one. He is going to take the positives

:58:30.:58:33.

from it. He will go away and he will probably review the match with his

:58:34.:58:36.

coach and he will get ready for Australia and come out and hopefully

:58:37.:58:40.

defend his title there. Of course, it wasn't just Gordon

:58:41.:58:43.

playing. There were other finals happening, as well.

:58:44.:58:58.

David Wagner beat Itay Erenlib from Israel.

:58:59.:59:05.

That's it from us here at the wheelchair tennis Masters. Don't

:59:06.:59:08.

forget you can see the draw for the third round of the FA Cup hosted by

:59:09.:59:15.

Mark Chapman tonight on BBC Two. Lucy, thank you very much for

:59:16.:59:18.

joining us here. Who would have thought it would be three Scots

:59:19.:59:22.

finishing number one in 2016?

:59:23.:59:29.
