Hello and a very warm welcome to the Dewars Centre in Perth, the second

:00:30.:00:35.

day of our courage of the co-operative funeral care

:00:36.:00:41.

International open. The quality was simply champion.

:00:42.:00:46.

Four world champions past and present on display today. Darren

:00:47.:00:51.

Burnett, champion 201420 total toe with David Holt. David Holt is a

:00:52.:01:00.

really quality player. And three times world indoor champion Andy

:01:01.:01:05.

Thomson faced England's David Richardson. He is a good player, and

:01:06.:01:12.

anybody who can beat a seeded player is a talent. It will be a hard game.

:01:13.:01:17.

Alex Marshall has no fewer than six world titles to his name, it is that

:01:18.:01:21.

elusive first Scottish title that he is focused on this week. It would

:01:22.:01:27.

mean so much to win here in Scotland, and it is a great venue.

:01:28.:01:33.

It is one that is not on my CV. If that he was going to triumph in

:01:34.:01:39.

2015, he would need to get past Greg Harlow first in the tie of the

:01:40.:01:43.

round. And this is the way the draw looked

:01:44.:01:49.

at the start of play this morning. Jonathan Ross was facing Jamie

:01:50.:01:51.

Chestney, Darren Burnett against David Holt, Alex Marshall and Greg

:01:52.:01:57.

Harlow, and David Richardson and Andy Thompson as well. The bottom

:01:58.:02:01.

half of the draw will be sorted out tomorrow morning. So let's get to

:02:02.:02:05.

the one we thought would be the pick of the matches, and it didn't

:02:06.:02:10.

disappoint. Greg Harlow versus Alex Marshall. Quite simply the best

:02:11.:02:16.

there has ever been, Tattie Marshall. Not even his best friend

:02:17.:02:22.

Paul Foster comes close to his six world titles. He is such a dominant

:02:23.:02:27.

force, both inside and out, but as yet, hasn't won here in Perth. And

:02:28.:02:32.

this is a fellow who likes the carpet at the Dewars Centre, won

:02:33.:02:36.

this title a few years back, and then came a run of International

:02:37.:02:39.

open titles, and in 2010, stood on top of the world. While the six time

:02:40.:02:44.

world champion started like a runaway train, winning the first set

:02:45.:02:49.

8-3, we join the match in the second set, Marshall is 5-4 ahead. David

:02:50.:02:53.

Kirkhill and Paul Mitchell have the commentary.

:02:54.:02:57.

COMMENTATOR: 5-4, three ends to go. A lot to fight for, a tough one.

:02:58.:03:09.

He is looking to the forehand, he can use the green bowl to rest upon.

:03:10.:04:12.

Greg will settle for that. He will try and drop another one in, a

:04:13.:04:25.

little touch judge on the jack would be good, the pressure on Alex to

:04:26.:04:28.

play the shot here. And that is good.

:04:29.:04:31.

APPLAUSE UMPIRE: Jack level.

:04:32.:04:44.

Alex checking that the Jack was level.

:04:45.:05:00.

Jacques Harvey is the common term. -- jack.

:05:01.:05:14.

APPLAUSE And that has just gone and insured

:05:15.:05:57.

-- one inch or two too far. He could have to re-spot position,

:05:58.:06:03.

and he can't afford to take his own bowl out on the runner, he would

:06:04.:06:08.

definitely be three down. He might be better to just take someone down.

:06:09.:06:18.

UMPIRE: Time-out called. Alex has three time-outs remaining.

:06:19.:06:25.

It is over in this direction. Going off to the right-hand side. The

:06:26.:06:34.

white mark on the right-hand side of your picture.

:06:35.:06:46.

Greg apparently does have the bowl to play.

:06:47.:06:53.

By slitting, just to try to rest up for the green bowl, rest off for the

:06:54.:07:00.

single. That looks like it is worse. That

:07:01.:07:11.

was unlucky. He wanted the bowl, not the jack. He has plenty of

:07:12.:07:23.

time-outs, he doesn't have to worry. He was absolutely perfect, because

:07:24.:07:26.

he didn't have enough weight to carry the jack through.

:07:27.:07:31.

Disappointment, that bowl just dropped away. We don't know what the

:07:32.:07:37.

position is, but it is at least one. At least one, it does look like two.

:07:38.:07:46.

So Greg Harlow does... I think the reaction from Alex could be an

:07:47.:07:50.

indication that it is more than one. But Greg trying to play into his own

:07:51.:07:57.

bowl if he can. Drop inside to the Reds even better. And what a shot

:07:58.:08:05.

that is! I think he thought, if I get a shot in the jack.

:08:06.:08:07.

UMPIRE: Two shots, Greg Harlow. He was hoping here just to get the

:08:08.:08:24.

edge of the red, and drop back on the jack, where he would have made

:08:25.:08:27.

four. Two it is. STUDIO: Great save, but in the

:08:28.:08:33.

following end, Alex Marshall squared the match at 6-6 in the second set,

:08:34.:08:38.

where we pick up the action. COMMENTATOR: The three singles

:08:39.:08:44.

meetings between these gentlemen since 2006, two out of the three

:08:45.:08:49.

have gone to tie-break. UMPIRE: 28 metres.

:08:50.:09:05.

This is where a good first bowl can take the whole end.

:09:06.:09:12.

APPLAUSE Greg making absolutely sure he was

:09:13.:09:41.

behind it. In this situation, you are better to

:09:42.:09:49.

adjust back than just forward. He has adjusted well, and in he

:09:50.:10:44.

comes, Greg Harlow. It looked good! Alex looking to repeat his last

:10:45.:10:51.

bowl, drop on the red one, fallback. But he can't do any more than that.

:10:52.:10:57.

The shot against, you draw the shot, Sea watch or opponent does.

:10:58.:11:18.

Alex must like this, because he is right up beside it trying to

:11:19.:11:24.

encourage it forward. It's just didn't have the weight. Another foot

:11:25.:11:32.

also needed. He must have liked that, because he was right behind

:11:33.:11:41.

it. S however, Greg Harlow is lying the one, and he will try the

:11:42.:11:44.

backhand again to try to get a closer one.

:11:45.:11:48.

The time-out called, and I think that is his final time-out. If it

:11:49.:12:05.

goes to tie-break, he gets an extra one anyway, so it would be good for

:12:06.:12:11.

him. He might as well use them. This is an important bowl, if he plays

:12:12.:12:15.

this absolutely right, it will be very hard for Alex Marshall to do

:12:16.:12:18.

anything about it, just the way the bowls are sitting.

:12:19.:12:24.

It is not there. I tell you what, I reckon he thought that was closer,

:12:25.:12:30.

as well. He knows he has given Alex Marshall

:12:31.:12:41.

a chance here. Alex will use his time-out as well.

:12:42.:12:47.

Drop on the back red bowl, fall back. Shot, set, match. He is

:12:48.:12:59.

looking at the front bowl as well to try to take the green one out. I

:13:00.:13:04.

think the difficulty was that he probably thought his last bowl was

:13:05.:13:08.

right on it, and it's dropped short, and that is what is making him quite

:13:09.:13:15.

hesitant. If he knew he was half a yard short, he would just go

:13:16.:13:19.

straight in there and draw it, but because of that, he is thinking to

:13:20.:13:23.

himself, if I play this on the forehand, I can get bowl on bowl,

:13:24.:13:30.

and it doesn't matter. A big decision for Alex Marshall.

:13:31.:13:38.

He is going for the runner, bowl onto bowl. He is in the area, if he

:13:39.:13:49.

is watching it. He has got contact on the red, but he doesn't take the

:13:50.:13:54.

green at! I get believe it. Goodness me, that looked so good.

:13:55.:13:56.

UMPIRE: Match tie-break. Split away from the green bowl.

:13:57.:14:05.

Couldn't get any closer. UMPIRE: First aid tie-break, Alex

:14:06.:14:25.

won the toss. Alex Marshall felt he had it there,

:14:26.:14:29.

but it wasn't to be, and for the third time in four meetings between

:14:30.:14:35.

these two great players, it is a tie-break. It has been good stuff.

:14:36.:14:55.

Alex won the toss, but gave the match to Greg Harlow. He is still

:14:56.:15:09.

shaking his head about that bowl. I was watching him, not the bowl,

:15:10.:15:12.

because the body language is usually telling you when he is right there,

:15:13.:15:16.

with any of these top players, in fact.

:15:17.:15:30.

Good all, it is good stuff. We have seen very few tie-breaks so far,

:15:31.:15:39.

certainly compared to last year. They seemed to be every other game.

:15:40.:15:43.

So many good players left in the event.

:15:44.:15:55.

We are going to see a lot of tie-breaks. Maximum of three ends,

:15:56.:16:03.

of course. If you are not familiar with the format, three ends maximum,

:16:04.:16:11.

single-shot counts at each. That is interesting, not hanging around. And

:16:12.:16:14.

he has opened it up. If you do get it clean and you run

:16:15.:16:24.

with it to the ditch, you are quids in. Absolutely. And if not, just

:16:25.:16:31.

open it up. It can be a valid tactic when you are this good. It is not

:16:32.:16:36.

when you are not that good! It's all right if you are Alex Marshall or

:16:37.:16:42.

Paul Foster or Greg Harlow or somebody, but it is a hard shot to

:16:43.:16:48.

play. Just replacing it with another, but Alex will be drawing

:16:49.:16:52.

this time, there is surely enough space.

:16:53.:17:04.

Now, can he get his weight right after playing the runner? It looks

:17:05.:17:14.

quick. And it is quick. It went very quick out of the hand, didn't it? We

:17:15.:17:19.

didn't expect it to be that far away, and I don't think he did,

:17:20.:17:24.

either. The thing with that was, he realised that Greg hadn't played a

:17:25.:17:27.

particularly good second bowl, and it was available to him. And Greg

:17:28.:17:33.

can now make the alteration is required.

:17:34.:17:35.

APPLAUSE So much better with this one. And

:17:36.:17:41.

that changes things, and I tell you what... Know, the angle is not

:17:42.:17:46.

right. I was just thinking, where is the jack going to go here, probably

:17:47.:17:52.

off the ring if he goes for it. He can't draw it, he might as well try

:17:53.:18:00.

to hit it. The jack will go on a wee spot if he does. He has missed it.

:18:01.:18:10.

Oh, no, not the back one. That was actually a valuable bowl for him,

:18:11.:18:14.

and it might just stay on. It is right on the edge of the rink.

:18:15.:18:24.

They have a look, and they are happy that it is in. Greg Harlow will

:18:25.:18:35.

leave it alone. He will just go to the re-spot, that is all he can do.

:18:36.:18:40.

He has played a really good end here. Alex missed the chance on the

:18:41.:18:43.

first draw, and Greg closed it down. It doesn't really matter if he gets

:18:44.:18:56.

very close to the re-spot, he just had to be closer than the red Hall.

:18:57.:19:02.

And it is two or three yards away, so here we go. That doesn't matter.

:19:03.:19:10.

More than good enough. Alex might have to play this on the forehand

:19:11.:19:14.

and just try to chop the bowl off and stay. That is a horrible shot,

:19:15.:19:20.

to be honest with you, in terms of difficulty it is almost full scale.

:19:21.:19:27.

There is no hit on now. UMPIRE: Time-out called.

:19:28.:19:40.

This is a tough one. Yes, on the forehand, just over the weight.

:19:41.:19:49.

It is hard to judge the line, never mind the weight of it. Just under.

:19:50.:19:59.

Didn't play through it. Couldn't afford to be too heavy.

:20:00.:20:08.

That was a difficult one. Greg Harlow takes the opening to this

:20:09.:20:15.

tie-break, and we will have last bowl, as well.

:20:16.:20:28.

It has been a fantastic game. Alex had the edge in the first set. Very

:20:29.:20:39.

little between them in the second. Greg just edging that one. And now

:20:40.:20:49.

the crowd are hoping to a -- for a third end to the tie-break.

:20:50.:21:00.

APPLAUSE UMPIRE: 12 inch gap.

:21:01.:21:19.

That is terrific. APPLAUSE

:21:20.:21:45.

He just needs to get down, that's all. The weight looks very close to

:21:46.:21:49.

me. That is an absolutely bowl.

:21:50.:21:54.

UMPIRE: One He has played its slightly onto the

:21:55.:22:23.

line, just didn't have enough weight to hold it. You can see the shot on

:22:24.:22:30.

the forehand, Alex has played a great bowl here, but the problem is

:22:31.:22:34.

he now can't really afford to go near it. That is the difficulty, and

:22:35.:22:39.

if he does go near it, it is just going to make it easier or possibly

:22:40.:22:43.

even give it away, and that would be giving the match away with one bowl

:22:44.:22:45.

to go. giving the match away with one bowl

:22:46.:24:09.

difficulty is that that plant is looking like it is taking the

:24:10.:24:13.

closest red bowl out, but he still has the front red one. He is looking

:24:14.:24:20.

at it, and I think he is going to have to play the run straight

:24:21.:24:24.

through onto the green bowl. It will take out, and this is where the

:24:25.:24:28.

problem is, it will take out this bowl, probably, I would imagine that

:24:29.:24:32.

will happen. But he still has the front one.

:24:33.:24:38.

Both players with one bowl to play. That complicates things as well. It

:24:39.:24:47.

does, it does. Because the difficulty is, he has to go pretty

:24:48.:24:51.

hard at it if it is on the forehand to make sure all of the bowls go.

:24:52.:24:59.

Talk about margins. In bowls at this level, and Greg Harlow snaps a

:25:00.:25:15.

three-game losing streak against Alex Marshall. What a game. We

:25:16.:25:22.

expected an epic match, and that is precisely what we got. Alex Marshall

:25:23.:25:31.

took the first set, Greg Harlow took the second, and he has the advantage

:25:32.:25:33.

in the quarterfinal. Greg, I spoke to you before the

:25:34.:25:41.

match, and we were expecting this to be an epic tussle. I wasn't too sure

:25:42.:25:46.

at half way that it was, but I'm glad it turned into that. And Alex,

:25:47.:25:51.

you got off to a great start, your line and length was very good, and

:25:52.:25:56.

it was looking promising. I was very happy, but I always know that Greg

:25:57.:26:00.

is going to come back at me. I dominated the first set really well

:26:01.:26:03.

and I was happy with the way things were going, but I expected him to

:26:04.:26:08.

come back strong, and he did. Yes, congratulations to Greg Harlow,

:26:09.:26:12.

some great bowls to knock out the six time world champion.

:26:13.:26:17.

Congratulations to him. Now let's focus on our second match, David

:26:18.:26:21.

Holt against big Darren Burnett. 2014 World Cup EF Darren. In the

:26:22.:26:26.

early months, he won the world singles title at Potters, and

:26:27.:26:30.

followed that with gold for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in

:26:31.:26:34.

Glasgow. Winning the Scottish International open title here in

:26:35.:26:39.

Perth would be a great way to finish up this year. The reborn Australian

:26:40.:26:42.

David Holt knocked out the world champion and now Scottish

:26:43.:26:46.

international coach John Price with a lovely display of precision bowls

:26:47.:26:52.

in the first round. Born in Eccles, he moved to Australia 12 years ago,

:26:53.:26:55.

but has won Commonwealth gold England. And it was the Scotsman who

:26:56.:27:01.

started the better of the two, Darren Burnett with his nose just in

:27:02.:27:05.

front at 6-5, and we will join the match.

:27:06.:27:11.

COMMENTATOR: Final end of the opening set, Darren Burnett leading

:27:12.:27:15.

by won. -- one. That is a good thing to do with your

:27:16.:27:46.

first one. UMPIRE: Seven inches.

:27:47.:28:02.

And Darren Burnett has to draw with this, because at worst, he doesn't

:28:03.:28:06.

want to lose a set. He has to go for a really good

:28:07.:28:16.

second, if not the shot. Try to get something out of the set when your

:28:17.:28:20.

opposition tries to put the first bowl down like that. He will be

:28:21.:28:25.

trying to sneak around the front one.

:28:26.:28:44.

Now, has he remembered the weight? No damage done. It wasn't far away,

:28:45.:28:55.

it needed another foot or so, but it gives Darren a close second. He will

:28:56.:28:58.

be just trying to put a foot on. Struggling. Oh, Darren... It was the

:28:59.:29:42.

one to get right into it. David Holt, two to play, Darren Burnett,

:29:43.:29:50.

just the one now. The third ball is so critical, really is. To save the

:29:51.:30:05.

set. It wide, David, keep it wide... Don't get caught on the short stuff.

:30:06.:30:15.

That was just in size it would those balls, big bias. A perfect weight.

:30:16.:30:27.

Just felt he was a quarter bowl inside the line. Darren cannot

:30:28.:30:32.

afford to play too much at this. That will take the time out to weigh

:30:33.:30:42.

up the situation. He is bothered with this, he really is. If he goes

:30:43.:30:47.

attacking you can see the red bowl going out of the head, he has to be

:30:48.:30:56.

very careful there. There is a very good shot available for him into the

:30:57.:31:01.

split. Now that forces the green bowl...

:31:02.:31:20.

He has gone to the open hand for the draw. His own red one will concern

:31:21.:31:31.

him, can he find a way past it? He has come inside. How is that.

:31:32.:31:37.

APPLAUSE. A brilliant ball. He didn't fancy the risk of the

:31:38.:31:45.

forehand in case you got the green ball onto the jack, so played the

:31:46.:31:46.

safe option but the more difficult option in many ways. You need so

:31:47.:31:55.

much faith in yourself as a player. And he did. David taps the leg

:31:56.:32:00.

there. A professional response to a brilliant ball.

:32:01.:32:08.

Now he is back to trying to lift one of his two green balls onto the

:32:09.:32:13.

jack. What can he mix-up? I think he has

:32:14.:32:35.

slightly after it is me, has he flipped it? He has indeed, it is a

:32:36.:32:42.

tight set. He would have looked at that and certainly would have

:32:43.:32:45.

thought the angle wasn't quite right. Thin edge, and he was in the

:32:46.:32:53.

area, he knew it was possible. STUDIO: A wonderful save by David

:32:54.:33:04.

Holt there, into the second set, the 2014 world champion again put the

:33:05.:33:07.

pressure on and we rejoin the match with Bernat 4-2 in front. -- Darren

:33:08.:33:12.

Burnett in front. COMMENTATOR: He has made the

:33:13.:33:24.

correction but it is still a distance away.

:33:25.:33:41.

Both players making questions of their deliveries, might force David

:33:42.:33:54.

Holt onto, see if he stays with it or not. -- force David Holt onto the

:33:55.:33:59.

backhand. That looks narrow, even at the short

:34:00.:34:10.

Jack Lang you still have to push the bowl out -- jack length. Especially

:34:11.:34:18.

with the swinging tiger bowl he is using. Shake of the head he knew it,

:34:19.:34:22.

the second it left his hand he could see it. You cannot go hunting out

:34:23.:34:27.

the short jack length and think it is shorter, I will go narrower. It

:34:28.:34:30.

will not happen on this rig. Finding a good line again. The cat

:34:31.:34:55.

is still there but it is keeping the pressure on David Holt with almost

:34:56.:34:56.

every last ball. He has to have faith, pushed the

:34:57.:35:13.

ball out. He's going for the runner. And narrow line, extra weight to try

:35:14.:35:19.

and make sure. He is in the area. Oh, yes. Did well. APPLAUSE. Really

:35:20.:35:22.

good ball. Beautifully judged, didn't overplay

:35:23.:35:37.

the wait. Perfect for the job. With the back position against him he

:35:38.:35:42.

didn't fancy the draw. He is very calm! LAUGHTER. All animation, isn't

:35:43.:35:46.

he? The little twitches and the jerks

:35:47.:35:54.

and everything else going on just to make sure the bowl gets there, as

:35:55.:35:58.

Darren Burnett lines up his little controlled runner. He looks in the

:35:59.:36:06.

area as well, bowl on the jack for the back position. Well played.

:36:07.:36:08.

APPLAUSE. Played it well, two really good

:36:09.:36:13.

bowls in the end. STUDIO: Well, that set the tone for

:36:14.:36:25.

the rest of the match, and Darren Burnett won it by one 1/2-2 and a

:36:26.:36:34.

half. Great game but that second set you played someone Dezful bowls.

:36:35.:36:37.

There were flashes through the game of what we can do, I was a bit too

:36:38.:36:42.

consistent at times but the first set was really tight, I dug deep and

:36:43.:36:50.

thought I just came on better in the second set. So the Commonwealth gold

:36:51.:36:54.

medallist Darren Burnett in the quarterfinals, doing very well

:36:55.:36:58.

indeed. Andy Thomson is a big favourite, he has wonderful world

:36:59.:37:02.

title three times. This afternoon he David Richardson.

:37:03.:37:05.

Thomson the Anglo Scot took the initiative in the first set and

:37:06.:37:12.

established a four shot lead at the conclusion. Mark Richards and hit

:37:13.:37:16.

back with a successful drive at end seven.

:37:17.:37:23.

And it is with some relief that Thomson close down the set 9-5.

:37:24.:37:31.

Thomson reached the world singles final at the age of 59 earlier this

:37:32.:37:37.

year, and his power showed no signs of waning. An effective strike early

:37:38.:37:43.

in the second set. There were sparkling bowls in end three, first

:37:44.:37:48.

the man from Sussex looked to have won the end with this final shot,

:37:49.:37:52.

but the response from Thomson was immaculate.

:37:53.:37:59.

Now this year's world singles finalist was really hitting his

:38:00.:38:09.

stride and he marched further ahead in end six. By the end it was a

:38:10.:38:18.

formality. A memorable shot but Richardson bowing out as the

:38:19.:38:20.

Scottish open champion went through 9-5.

:38:21.:38:25.

STUDIO: Andy Thomson who reached the final of the world singles this year

:38:26.:38:33.

now into the quarterfinals in Perth, congratulations to him. That's

:38:34.:38:36.

focused on our final match, Jamie chesty against Johnny Ross. The

:38:37.:38:42.

bowler from Northern Ireland to resides in Paisley and plays under

:38:43.:38:45.

the Scottish flag has never reached beyond the second round of the

:38:46.:38:48.

Scottish International open. He showed class in the opening round

:38:49.:38:55.

destroying Gary Pickering. He went into this in top form. It wasn't

:38:56.:38:59.

going to be plain sailing because Jamie Chesney was also in the mood

:39:00.:39:04.

on the opening day, the former world champion and local favourite David

:39:05.:39:07.

Goodwillie was the victim as Chesney found some fine form and ruthless

:39:08.:39:13.

accuracy to progress to round two. Jamie took the first set comfortably

:39:14.:39:18.

8-3, with a much tenths fare in the second set. We will join the action

:39:19.:39:22.

with the match ate a much tenths fare in the second set. We will join

:39:23.:39:24.

the action with the match eight apiece.

:39:25.:39:39.

Looking good, too. He will take that. Back to the longer jack length

:39:40.:40:09.

and both players reverted to their favourite backhand. That is a great

:40:10.:40:19.

ball to put in with your first delivery, isn't it? Jonathan Ross

:40:20.:40:20.

plays a brilliant ball. Now he has to decide, does he really

:40:21.:40:32.

want to get that close to... It is a good effort. Of the other hand.

:40:33.:40:39.

Going deep if he is going the other hand, doesn't want to be anywhere

:40:40.:40:42.

near the red one so he has to go deep. Needs to hurry a little bit.

:40:43.:40:53.

Yes, he didn't push through it. It's not a useless bowl by any means,

:40:54.:40:57.

there is value in it but it is four feet away from where he wanted it.

:40:58.:41:04.

Stubbed it slightly. I had a chat with -- chat with Jamie this morning

:41:05.:41:09.

before the match. He was relaxing and taking it easy and felt good. He

:41:10.:41:15.

said he was looking forward to it. He is in good form. He has played

:41:16.:41:20.

well in this match, I have to say. Forcing Jonathan into going looking

:41:21.:41:24.

now. Tap the ball down, that might just be enough. This is hard now for

:41:25.:41:33.

Jamie because if he puts another bowl in, he just could make it easy

:41:34.:41:40.

for Jonathan, or easier for Jonathan. If he stays away from it,

:41:41.:41:49.

Jonathan could flick the bowl out. So... I think he will probably just

:41:50.:41:54.

take a risk here and stay away from it, because it is not an easy shot

:41:55.:42:00.

for Jonathan. Having said that, if he wants to tap his own red bowl

:42:01.:42:07.

down it is good enough. There is the recent bot cover. Trying for the

:42:08.:42:13.

previous ball, little white spot. So, choices. A draw, tap the ball

:42:14.:42:20.

down, or four on the green one and tap the jack back. -- fall on the

:42:21.:42:27.

green one. If he is coming into that angle, Brett on Queen bowl,

:42:28.:42:33.

full-back with the jack to the red bowl -- get on the green bowl. The

:42:34.:42:43.

thing is, he has played twice to draw to that green bowl and been a

:42:44.:42:49.

bit short. Getting the right shot is to draw to be honest because that

:42:50.:42:54.

little tap on the bowl might be enough. It is a hard shot to play

:42:55.:42:59.

wait, I think that is probably sensible. Playing the drawer shot so

:43:00.:43:06.

well in this backhand. It is coming back, it is coming back. APPLAUSE.

:43:07.:43:20.

To be fair, Jamie could have done that as well if he had tried to draw

:43:21.:43:25.

so that is where the danger was for him, but it looked the right shot

:43:26.:43:30.

for me, the way he is playing. He has been struggling to hit a barn

:43:31.:43:34.

door with the weight shots so play to your strength and the strength

:43:35.:43:39.

has been drawing. Brilliant bowl. Jamie knew he had the last ball. He

:43:40.:43:46.

will come into this hippie can. Way high. Never get back, not a hope. It

:43:47.:43:50.

will go into a tie-break. All credit to Jonathan Ross, led

:43:51.:44:10.

7-0, then trailed 8-7, two singles in the last two ends. What an

:44:11.:44:18.

excellent end. To bring it through. Did what he had to do, you will take

:44:19.:44:24.

three at the end, how many didn't matter, they just needed to score.

:44:25.:44:28.

Indeed. It is always questionable what you try and do there, what has

:44:29.:44:33.

become more popular in recent years I have noticed if people playing

:44:34.:44:36.

very short on the line of the drawer just to make it a little more

:44:37.:44:41.

difficult, because he really had the re-spot covered with his third ball

:44:42.:44:48.

only four feet away. So there was a block on that and forced Jonathan to

:44:49.:44:51.

play the weight shot, which is the one he has been struggling with all

:44:52.:44:56.

match. Fize shots tend to haunt you, you think, what I have -- if I had

:44:57.:45:03.

done this or that but he threw the gauntlet down. And he did, that is

:45:04.:45:07.

what Jonathan has been doing on that backhand and a longer length. He has

:45:08.:45:15.

managed to play very well in the second set after going walkabout in

:45:16.:45:19.

the middle of it and losing 2-1, 3-2, and he has come back in the

:45:20.:45:28.

last two ends. You know, it's what... It's what Jonathan does. He

:45:29.:45:38.

fights his way through to the quarterfinals, tournament after

:45:39.:45:41.

tournament, winning one match two matches, rarely goes beyond that.

:45:42.:45:48.

Yes. He has had a poor record here in recent times. Just manages to

:45:49.:45:53.

stay in the top spot between ten and 16 most of his career. So the

:45:54.:46:03.

tie-break, maximum of three ends, one shot can be scored.

:46:04.:46:11.

Jonathan going along and Jimmy bringing the matter up. -- Jamie

:46:12.:46:27.

bringing the matter up. target, not much that time, only

:46:28.:47:20.

half a bowl, but about as close as he has been with the runners, and he

:47:21.:47:24.

has given himself a chance by pushing that off and running

:47:25.:47:29.

through. Bowl into the head now will take the two green away. Played it

:47:30.:47:34.

with a little less weight that time, looking for more accuracy,

:47:35.:47:37.

that was sensible. other shot available. Had after

:47:38.:49:11.

playing a short blocker. Giving it a go, though. He's got a chance!

:49:12.:49:21.

Interesting. Jonathan is very interested! I think you need the

:49:22.:49:27.

mark there because Jonathan cannot see measures to save his life.

:49:28.:49:32.

LAUGHTER. Not all players are the best at judging, he could have done

:49:33.:49:36.

with that turning over once more, it has held on the bias. Nearly dropped

:49:37.:49:47.

away. Jonathan can't tell without his glasses! Really a problem for

:49:48.:49:51.

Sandra, she cannot get very close to it because the green bowl will drop

:49:52.:49:57.

away. Red is favoured, I think, from the rings. A fairly safe shop for

:49:58.:50:04.

Jonathan on the backhand because bowl on the jack, if he turns it

:50:05.:50:10.

over once it is good. That is what he had been doing with his running

:50:11.:50:16.

bowls. He played one really good one this end and it might be enough to

:50:17.:50:22.

give him the shot. Just favouring red. Just supporting the bowl so

:50:23.:50:30.

when the measure comes... I have seen Jonathan measure things

:50:31.:50:48.

two inches away, he is not a judge, but this is close.

:50:49.:50:54.

It is worth pointing out that no shot can be given. If the umpire

:50:55.:51:08.

thinks they are equities to and. The red bowl is definitely sitting down

:51:09.:51:17.

as well. -- thinks they are equities to and. It is there. No problem with

:51:18.:51:24.

that, plenty in it. Jonathan Ross will take the opening end. APPLAUSE

:51:25.:51:33.

. He played one good bowl there in that end that got away with it. That

:51:34.:51:42.

is the nature of tie-breaks. Now he will go to his favourite long jack

:51:43.:51:44.

length. This match is running on this now

:51:45.:52:10.

towards the hour, just over an hour and 20 minutes. Normally we would

:52:11.:52:17.

say an hour half for a full tie-break, so it is bang on time.

:52:18.:52:20.

Hour and a half. A little noise in the crowd, they

:52:21.:53:11.

will reset. Jonathan Ross. Both players have played well this match,

:53:12.:53:15.

Jonathan has probably been a little more inconsistent than Janey, and

:53:16.:53:22.

Jamie has been the better player overall -- inconsistent than Janey.

:53:23.:53:25.

But sets are funny. APPLAUSE. I am not sure if Jamie is pensive

:53:26.:53:49.

but he is watching this. Reckoned he wasn't just reaching in, he was

:53:50.:53:56.

right, would like to have made it with the second bowl.

:53:57.:54:03.

Jonathan still has a couple of tie-breaks.

:54:04.:54:25.

He does like this backhand, just a little bit heavy this time. Rest the

:54:26.:54:37.

red ball, full-back, is what he is aiming for.

:54:38.:54:44.

We have had very few tie-breaks in the Scottish International open

:54:45.:54:51.

2015. Always exciting, always worth watching. APPLAUSE. Dropped away.

:54:52.:55:01.

Still one red, the ball just needed to stand up on that occasion and the

:55:02.:55:05.

red bowl is well in as you can see from our rings. I think he still

:55:06.:55:16.

going to draw into this. He could do what Jamie did last time, stay away

:55:17.:55:20.

from it and end up paying the penalty, so... Probably still

:55:21.:55:31.

reckons he needs a closer ball. The danger is if he drops on the jack he

:55:32.:55:33.

can give the shot away. Yes. Can't really blame him for

:55:34.:55:58.

this. He has been very tentative, taken away the heavy running ball to

:55:59.:56:01.

drive the red one out but still leaving the draw. Cannot blame him

:56:02.:56:10.

for that, there is pressure out there. Big bowl to stay in the

:56:11.:56:18.

competition. Jamie Chesney has three but they are not good enough, is

:56:19.:56:23.

this good enough, Jamie Chesney, to stay in the match, comes in, needs

:56:24.:56:28.

to put the brakes on, and he hasn't. APPLAUSE It has just gone across and

:56:29.:56:34.

Jamie's valiant effort at the Scottish International open comes to

:56:35.:56:39.

a close as the experience Jonathan Ross takes his place in the

:56:40.:56:44.

quarterfinals of the competition. APPLAUSE. A terrific match. Jamie

:56:45.:56:53.

taking the first set, Jonathan taking the second after squandering

:56:54.:56:58.

a big lead, but he did it all in the tie-break to win 2-0.

:56:59.:57:03.

STUDIO: Wonderful play from all the bowlers on display here at the

:57:04.:57:10.

Dewars Centre but what was the shot of the day? I have no idea but Corky

:57:11.:57:12.

does. My shot of the day comes from a

:57:13.:57:21.

match with Darren Burnett and David Holt from Australia, seventh end,

:57:22.:57:25.

David Holt in a lot of trouble, 52 down with two shots against him that

:57:26.:57:29.

more or less would secure the set for Darren Burnett, but he plays the

:57:30.:57:33.

most exquisite ball on the backhand, beautiful weight, and

:57:34.:57:39.

takes two bowls out. It was a dream shop. Here we see it, controlled

:57:40.:57:44.

weight, very difficult to play on the portable rink, hits the jack,

:57:45.:57:49.

two bowls disappear, all the power transferred through the jack to the

:57:50.:57:53.

two Red Bulls, there they go, and it leaves him with three shots. That

:57:54.:57:58.

levelled the score and put him in a situation where it was 5-5 with two

:57:59.:58:04.

ends to go. The set was drawn but it was a fantastic bowl and that is why

:58:05.:58:05.

it was my shot of the day. A wonderful shot from David Holt

:58:06.:58:14.

there but alas not good enough to be Darren Burnett. So now we know four

:58:15.:58:17.

of the quarter finalists. Tomorrow we will find out who the others are.

:58:18.:58:22.

Some great matches coming up tomorrow.

:58:23.:58:27.

Nicky Brett and Stewart Anderson should be a cracker. Mark Royal and

:58:28.:58:34.

Paul Foster should also be tested tasty as will Les Gillett and Robert

:58:35.:58:40.

Paxton. Join us for that tomorrow on. The action gets under way live

:58:41.:58:44.

at 1pm. It should be great, I wouldn't miss it, if today is

:58:45.:58:48.

anything to go by it will be absolutely glorious. And that's it

:58:49.:58:51.

for today's coverage, thank you thank you for you company, from all

:58:52.:58:54.

of us here at the Dewars Centre, sleep well, goodbye.
