Day 3 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Good evening. Welcome to highlights from Day 3 of the 2016 BDO World

Professional Darts Championships here from the world-famous Lakeside.

We are getting started straightaway. We are still in the first round but

Ted Hankey on his return to the BDO had to come through a qualifier and

he faces a familiar face, Martin Phillips.

ANNOUNCER: This is any territory. Be on your way!

Brilliant walk-ons and they were the highlights of the first two sets.

Martin Phillips cantering out without having to do much at all. We

will watch this one at the beginning of the

moment. Get that treble and you will be right. A glance off. Rather

unlucky. He is saying, "Come on, come on", but that was unlucky off

the barrel. Maybe he should have just moved along a touch. A solid

tonne from Phillips. He is still in this, like. It is not too bad. That

is a good one. Too many loose starts. 121. 121 and Phillips is on

the throw. Hankey is on a checkout and a chance to take a leg against

the darts. OK. There it is. Phillips 144. He is trying to get that

treble. It is not there. You require 90. Maybe a bull's-eye first. Top

stops he's got. Goodness me, that missed by a long way. Can't work it

out. He is shaking his head. He is mystified. Bull's eye. Ted you

require 75. Come on, Ted. That is a good 12 now. Two darts to do it.

Double six. Make it happen. No, it is not happening. He needs to hold

his throw. Double 8 now. Double 4. The Welsh man gets it. Martin

Phillips! He tried for all he is worth in that to refocus. He had an

opportunity but couldn't capitalise. You have got the feel for him. As I

say, maybe away from the game too long. You don't know what he has

been doing. Where he has been playing. Good work from Phillips.

But you have got to have opponents that you can play and bet. I don't

think there is a huge amount of self-belief in him now. It seems to

have ebbed away as the match has unfolded. Oh, come on, Ted. Make a

game of it! This is where his problem has been. One out of 23.

Just a fraction. A cigarette paper away.

OK. 60 is the score. He needs 60 and a few more. That is better!

Phillips making hill pay, though. CHEERING

That is his first match. What a time to do it against the throw. He has

given him a real checkout opportunity on 80. Phillips has

turned the crowd right the way around. . Everyone was standing

then. 807. Tops now. -- 80. Tops now. You call it Shanghi. Can't

finish a game. He needed the treble. So all eyes are on Phillips. Topsy

once. CHEERING

There it is. He is a leg away from victory now. 2-nil. He has got the

throw. And what promised potentially to be an epic is moving towards a

fairly easy victory for Martin Phillips. Well, he's done it all

before, but has he got the Will Power now?

A prime Hankey would be jumping all over that 459. That is a good start,

though. He's got a look of ses nation on his face. He looks a

little bit morose. He will be thinking, it can still happen. This

is better. That is what he At last, at last he's put that

Phillips three under pressure. 261. Good start. Well, this is the sort

of darts that we had anticipated. Three tonne pluses. He is on the

finish. What will he make of this? This is to keep the match alive. He

has to win this leg. Just checking where he is on the scores. 132, Ted.

Noise in the crowd, not for the first time putting Hankey off.

CROWD BOOS He is not happy. That is unusual for

Ted. Well he complained to security I think during the last interval. He

is allowing it to get to him. Anyway, 72. Come on, Ted. Get it

finished. 52 left. Double top. Close. It is just the wrong side of

the wire. Phillips then for the match. 54. Tops. This is for it! He

puts it away. He takes Ted Hankey off that stage. That is a peal

shadow of what Ted Hankey can be, but Martin Phillips did what he had

to do. Kept his nerve. Hankey annoyed with the crowd, but Phillips

wins it 3-nil. CROWD BOOS

So Martin Phillips through. Hankey back into the coffin as we move into

a game from this afternoon that saw the return of John Walton. Many said

his time at Lakeside was up, but he's been proving people wrong and

qualified. He is going up against our Australian qualifier Rob Modra

who had his good friend helping him back stage. It didn't help in the

first set. That went to John Walton. He was rolling back the years as we

pick it up at the start of Set 2. Straight back into treble 20 and

again. 140. Oh, God, dear John - why did you go away? It just goes to

show how much of this game is confidence. No-one doubts John

Walton's talent. He hasn't got the best Lakeside record, to be honest,

apart in the year that he won, 2001. A couple of second-round defeats. A

quarterfinal lost to Ray Barnevelt in 2012 and another to Ted Hankey in

2009. Apart from that, it is all-round 1 and 2. It is still

consistency that he needs. APPLAUSE

Six darts at least. Treble 17 would leave the bull. That would have been

for a 12-dart leg. Still 2, 4, 7, though. A big ask. Treble 13 would

leave tops. 17s and 12s. Single 18. He will be back. So Modra still 204

and John has had six starts at the double. He has another three darts

here. Double top. Oh, double 15. APPLAUSE

ANNOUNCER: John Walton. Took his time. He needs everything that he

can get here. Advantage time, though. Trebles. So John Walton

playing some of the best darts we have seen from him.

CHEERING In over a decade! This is terrific.

Already up standing, cheering. These ambassadors of darts. Two 180s

already for John Boy Walton. That is 5-5. Again and again. Just as we

start thinking about a perfect leg of darts, he comes off the barrel

and bounces high. Oh, dear. This is good, John. It is really good, Tony

- you are right. Average score of 90, almost 94. Yeah, left himself a

tonne. So he can do this in 11 darts. Tops

he needs for that. Doesn't matter, really. With Modra back on 206. 206,

but he would have preferred to have taken it. In that last throw. Here

we go. Three darts, double top and you only need one.

APPLAUSE The second leg, John Walton. That is

five legs in a row. For the former champion. Third leg it isson to

three first. Game on. He is not just announced that he is back. He is

making a bit of a statement. It is incredible. Away from the big

time, coming back so well. So I know there are various sporting rivalries

between New Zealand and Australia. That is Craig Caldwell, the Kiwi. He

played really well on debut. I wonder who he is supporting. Well,

let's hope he can put some blood in - he got a treble. There it is.

Having said that, Tony, the Aussie is in all black.

They are entitled to be with the World Cup.

They are yellow, but they are bananas. Yes, very appealing.

Oh, yes, the harbour master Dennis Harbour. He is watching on with

interest. 140. John, you require 156. Double 18. Double 18 for Modra

when he comes back - and he will come back because unusualy John

Walton has had a couple of visits without finding the treble 20. For

the first leg of the match for Modra.

CHEERING Cheer I tell you what, he will feel

an awful lot better for having hit that. It was only his second dart at

a double all match. He missed double top in the third leg of the first

set. A good start. So 1-2 for Modra and around 50% for

John Boy as well. With the weight of his scoring, he could afford to miss

a few. He is back in the treble. And again.

One to Oh, yes, John Boy! A lot of performances putting up. He's been

away for two years. Four years. Is it four now? Four years. Oh, dear.

Hasn't won a match in five. So a chance here for Modra. 69

points. But he will be under pressure. Must take this out. 10 for

tops. One dart at it. Oh, yes! CHEERING

But John Boy has the darts in this deciding leg of the second set.

Remember, the first of three sets will reach the first round proper.

Yes, come on. Brian Dawson awaits. Yes! 180.

What is this from John Boy! Yes! CHEERING

The perfect repost. They are up and down for both players. Keep

standing. Terrific match, this. We didn't really know what to expect.

Modra had never played there before. John Boy, well, he had hardly set

the darting world on fire in over a decade, but this is great. Oh,

unlucky. Caught the barrel. Still happy with that treble. John Boy

will want to leave a don't finish here. -- a decent finish here. He

hasn't really don't that, but he is on a finish. Whoever wins this leg,

wins this set. So two treble 19s for double 18. They will probably they

up. It will be 19s here for Modra. Treble 20, yeah. Yeah, went for the

board. That was a shot. Yes! 9 for double 16. He will have a

dart for the set. Here it is. He's missed it! He wept from - he went

for 25 for tops. 16 for double 16 or 8 for tops. He hit the double 16 so

double 8. That might be a big, big, big miss. Two to go. Only one. Slip.

Yes! Game! In the second set, John Walton.

CHEERING Cheer He showed a bit of nous and a

bit of experience there. He composed himself. He knew he had one more

dart for the set and he nailed it! It is 2-nil.

APPLAUSE Everyone is loving this. What a

great match. He has come back, John Boy, against

the big man from Australia. His first time here. He is showing us

what they can do. Modra is a decent player. He played

Gary Anderson in Auckland last year and only lost 6-5. We know the form

of Anderson an, don't we? Yeah, he is a decent enough player, isn't he?

World champion again. Problems with his eyes. He doesn't want to wear

glasses. It will affect his throw. It could finish here. Trouble 20.

Still treble 20. -- treble 20. Still treble 20. OK, John. Another one of

those, please. Unlucky. Here we go. Double top two for it.

Double 10. Oh, you've got to put them away. Double 18. He is left.

Terrific marker. Bent the whir and again. He won't get any. Double 10.

Snare. Oh, well off. But that is in. Rob Modra.

When he won the first five legs of the match we thought John Boy Walton

might run away with it. But, Rob Modra, credit to him, he's kept his

composure, won a couple of legs in that last set, had a dart to take

the set, missed the double 8, but he's moved away in this, the third

set. Still having a smile. He's smiled all the way through.

Yeah, good thinking. Leaves his favourite double. Double 18 shot.

Good marker. Yes, there he is. John Walton third leg. Rob to throw

first. I will tell you what else about this match, Tony, they both

get on with it. It is fast and furious and decent scoring. It is

good enough finishing. This is what darts is all about.

Yeah, there is no messing about. Like I said, he is waiting on the

oky as John comes back. He blocked the double 20. It has

been a busy old time for Father Christmas, but this is what he does

in his leisure time. He never came to me.

LAUGHS . That is because you were naughty,

Tony. LAUGHS

. Should switch down. John Boy on a

finish. All about the 20s. But Modra will be favourite to take this leg.

Not if John Boy finds another treble 20 he won't be. Ah, just the wrong

side of the wire. Treble 20. Oh, now. If that is treble 13, we will

just wait. Let's see what he has hit. He can't finish. John is coming

back. Treble 16 for double 8 so single 16 for double 16. Yeah! Yes,

yes, yes! CHEERING

John Walton. All of a sudden, he is a leg away. It is John the throw

first. Game on. And he has the darts. It is difficult to tell

sometimes with John Boy when he is playing darts, but I can guarantee

that he is enjoying himself up there. Well, he is at the moment.

That is because he looks a certainty for this match. What a comeback it

has been. It is great to see him back and great to see him on form.

You won't meet a nicer bloke. Still battling away. Yeah, I was

going to say that Rob Modra won echo those sentiments. He would probably

rather John Walton was struggling. He certainly won't be giving up.

Brian Dawson awaits in the first round proper. 15th seed this year,

Brian. Not giving up! Well, this could be it, right here. Yes! 14 for

tops. Match dart. John Boy Walton. CHEERING

John Walton and the match, John Walton. He is back, isn't he? John

Walton disposes of Rob Modra and he's made a bit of a statement. Back

for the first time in tour years. Back to his best. He is through to

Round 1. Walton turning back the clock while two Dutch friends took

each other all the way. Jeffrey de Graaf is through. Martin Atkins was

steady as he goes ahead. Blackwell annoyed he couldn't produce the good

on the day and he goes ahead to the second round. I love this guy. The

American Larry butler wins again. He took his sweat time with three

lovely darts to beat his opponents. This dart put him into the last 16.

CHEERING And in the ladies draw Aileen de

Graaf against Casey Gallagher. Monthing on it is England against

Scotland. Jamie Hughes is up against Ross Montgomery. Despite being

unseeded this year he has experience to cause an upset in this match. The

first two sets it was Palestinian sailing for him. He was 2 up but at

the end of set two as they went off for a little break how can I put

this, there was a set two. Nothing big. Just a shrug but something to

talk about as we take you into Set 3.

We will keep oury on that. Maybe there is a bit of a spark or needle.

Two very different characters, these two. Sometimes you lying to see

that. Absolutely. Some of the great sporting rivalries, John, are

fuelled by hay treds. Going back a few years -- hatred. Going back a

few years Mr Brisbane tow used to tonne it into a fine art form. He

would tease his op point. -- tease his opponent and the crowd would

love it. He has to do that now does Montgomerie. Two sets down. Y. Two

sets down. The mystery of why Yasser was a bit

miffed maybe with Ross and they weren't getting on too well. We

might have been able to explore a little bit more about it. We will

see this one out of the way first and then have a look. Bull's eye.

Huegill on 200. Montgomery a chance to strike against the throw, which

will certainly brighten them up a bit. Brilliant. Makes the

Double 8. Fours. Big darts. He keeps his nerve. A good dart, indeed. He

had to take that. Hughes with the 180 was poised. What happened as

they left the stage at the end of that last set? We will take a look

after these three. There has not been anyy contact since. Here we go.

Let's have a look at this. A little tap on the head and a reaction. Make

of that what you will. It wasn't exactly riotous, was it? Anyway, on

wards with the game. Hues Hughes two sets to the good. -- Hughes two sets

to the good. Montgomery with the break, though, in this third set.

There was also that reaction, wasn't there, from Ross Montgomery right at

the very start and he locked miff at the start of his walkon. Who knows.

We are not sure whether the wrong music was played or something was

shouted. Who knows. A couple of odd reactions from Montgomery this

evening. The bottom line is that Hughes is ahead in the match. He is

looking to put some pressure on the three here. He will be disappointed

with that. Monday Mont, I am told -- Mont moment, I am told, is on a

finish here. He is on 147 now. He's left him on 110. That has been

- 110 is what Montgomery requires. Hughes is on 157. There we go.

Thankfully the correct score for you shown on the screen. It is 110 for a

two-leg lead, third set for Ross Montgomery. Treble 1 or perhaps

bull. Oh, neither. So we will stay up. Hughes 64 to take the leg back

against the throw. Looking at the 16s and 8s. Double 8 now.

CHEERING Good finishing. Great stuff from

Jamie Hughes. Back on level terms. With the throw, so with the

advantage in this third. Both legs against the darts, third set. Two

sets the advantage to England's Jamie Hughes, the fourth seed. Last

16 last year. Three of his fiver titles came in 2015, moving him up

the rankings and here he is now. He is giving Montgomery a bit of a

seeing to. Part of that winning England team, too, in the World Cup.

Took place in Turkey. He's got the bit between his teeth now, in a

sense. -- you sense. The insigniate on his collar, which

we can hopefully have a look at - there we are - is Gaelic for

Scotland the brave. He will have to show that bravery right now because

this is a real fight for Scotland's captain. He is a better player than

he has shown, isn't he? Oh, much, much better than this. Hnchts 164

can be done. -- 164 can be done. Good dart. Treble 18 leaves the

bull'sy. -- treble 18 leaves the bull's-eye. Time on his side just to

set it up. Playing the percentages now, Jamie Hughes, to try and play

this one out. No finish for Ross Montgomery. He was going to go down,

but he's chained his mind. What a great dart! A quality dart, that.

Double 16, double 8 now. 8 now. Montgomery breathes again. What a

time for one of those. Well, these are now must-get darts. He's got one

more at double 20. No. So back to Hughes to double 8 again. Unlucky

with that last dart on his last visit. This to hold his throw and go

ahead in the third set 2-1. That is a good marker. Come on, he says.

Yes! APPLAUSE

Steely focus in the eyes through the beds of perspiration. Big moments,

these, for Jamie Hughes. A great response, though, from Ross

Montgomery. Top 40. Still waiting for his first match 180, Montgomery.

He has got to pretty much take everything from here. Somehow try

and claw his way back. A lot to ponder because he's been

way below his brilliant best today so far. It can still be rescued.

Level-pegging with the three. That was so bad that he can't stop

himself from laughing. That is the way! And again! How about that for a

refocus? A big fat one. Then two in the lip of the 20. What a big moment

that could prove here. No finish then for Montgomery. Hughes will

have first go at checking out here to perhaps win the

So Hughes is coming back with 129 now to try and check this one out

and try and win the match. Montgomery on 70. He's put a bit of

pressure on this one. He's put a lot of pressure on it and the shake of

the head tells you all there is to know. There is no finish. Montgomery

can keep alive here. That is in the bull, the second dart. Just doing a

bit of last-minute maths there, Jamie Hughes. He leaves himself 56.

Will he have a shot? 70 for Ross Montgomery. Last year's

quarterfinalist. This to stay alive. 15 would leave tops. Double tops to

stay in the match. He's missed it. So Jamie Hughes has a two-darter to

close it out. 16 for tops. 10s. Can he take it? No! He grazes the wire.

Well, this has to land for Ross. Oh, dear. Double five. These are awful.

No mistake there! APPLAUSE

FORCEDWHITE Match darts gone then. Hughes, though, with the throw. If

he can hold on once again he would take that third set and so progress

into the next round. Well, it is still very much for Hughes to lose.

But Ross has rallied. There is more from Montgomery. He will be thinking

to himself, "Why couldn't I do that earlier in the match?" Yes. We are

seeing something like what Montgomery can produce. But he is

running out of time with Hughes still throwing darts like that. A

couple of loss ones. Gets another one and a yell. He is angry. Hughes

on 323. Good shot. 1407, excellent. APPLAUSE

-- 140, excellent. APPLAUSE

Well, that was a his. Didn't like something, did he? He won't luke

these darts at all. Dear oh dear. He gave up and tossed the final dart

and smack in the middle of the treble 20. Hughes 183 now. Just

trying to main taken composure, despite what else might be happening

up there on the stage. It is a good last dart. Well, Hughes just needs

to keep his cool here because Montgomery looks like he's gone. He

had given up on that last one. This is 86. To close it out for England's

Jamie Hughes treble 18. He is into the big four so it might have to be

bull here. Single 17 and Montgomery on 164. Treble 18 gives him a shot

at bull. He couldn't, could he? No. So Hughes will be back with tops.

Here he comes then. Is this the moment? Another chance to win this

match. Tops is all it needs. That is a good marker. Victory by three sets

to nil. What shall we say, a few interesting shananigans up there on

the stage, but, ultimately, Montgomery massively underperformed

You are through what was a potentially tricky match. You didn't

look overly happy with your performance when you came off stage?

No, no, very disappointed with the performance. I am a lot better

player than that. I didn't do myself justice there. Neither did Ross. He

is a better player. I expected that to be a very, very good match where

we both pulled each other along and hit big scores and took big shots

out to bring each other along and make each other play better. So it

was one of those occasions, I guess, where you almost dragged each other

down. Is that how you view it? I think so. Probably a bit too much

respect for each other, probably. Let's look on the positives. You are

still in the tournament. You are into the second round and you are

the No. 4 seed. Things seem to be going well for you in the past few

months? Yeah. The No. 4 seed. I've had a good last 12 months since the

last leg. I was disappointed going out, but I went out to the best

player last year. He didn't win it, but he was the best player. I

couldn't really moan last year. You are still in with a shout. You are

still in the tournament, well done tonight. We know you will get

better. Thank you. Thank you. Hopefully. I'll have to!

which he lapped up second seed. Really, really good for him going

into this. He has got the Silencer Jeff Smith who made a splash last
