Good afternoon, welcome to Match Of The Day 2 Extra

:00:26.:00:28.

on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website.

:00:29.:00:31.

Joining me today are Former England, Manchester City and Middlesbrough

:00:32.:00:35.

defender Danny Mills, England and Chelsea Ladies striker

:00:36.:00:37.

Eni Aluko and Henry Winter, who's Chief Football Writer

:00:41.:00:50.

11th Heaven for Chelsea who win at Crystal Palace

:00:51.:00:56.

Hull will be bottom at Christmas after losing at West Ham.

:00:57.:01:04.

We'll be live at the Etihad where Manchester City play

:01:05.:01:09.

And - ahead of Monday night's Merseyside derby -

:01:10.:01:12.

The headlines on the back pages this morning...

:01:13.:01:20.

It claims Pep Guardiola will make a ?25 million

:01:21.:01:24.

move for Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in January.

:01:25.:01:26.

In The Mirror - Bigger Than El Classico.

:01:27.:01:28.

ahead of tomorrow night's Merseyside derby,

:01:29.:01:29.

Ronald Koeman has claimed this

:01:30.:01:30.

In The Sunday Times - Top of the Tree, with Chelsea nine

:01:31.:01:35.

points clear at the top of the Premier League.

:01:36.:01:40.

That's where we'll start - with Chelsea, who have

:01:41.:01:43.

The record in the Premier League is 14.

:01:44.:01:48.

The next three games they don't have to leave London. That is fortunate.

:01:49.:01:58.

They will also be without Diego Costa for the suspension. But, the

:01:59.:02:06.

way that Antonio Conte has transformed that team, ten minutes

:02:07.:02:09.

into the game at the Emirates, I was there, they were trailing 3-0 to

:02:10.:02:14.

Arsenal, the way that he has Hazard playing at his best again.

:02:15.:02:18.

Costa was booked yesterday, but he has got him restrained and focused

:02:19.:02:22.

on bullying the defence with his ability. He has called for at

:02:23.:02:30.

Sunderland midweek, a fabulous save from van Aanholt.

:02:31.:02:35.

The wingbacks out wide, Moses has played fantastically. That

:02:36.:02:39.

celebration at the end, on some of the football pull-outs, that

:02:40.:02:42.

emotional engagement that he has with the fans, the fans respond to

:02:43.:02:46.

it. It's been incredible, three at the back.

:02:47.:02:49.

They have conceded twice, once to mentor and another time to Spurs,

:02:50.:02:53.

quite a record. -- wants to Manchester

:02:54.:02:58.

City. When you look at the great teams over the years, the great

:02:59.:03:04.

Barcelona side, the same back Webb Whee Kim, week out. Manchester

:03:05.:03:11.

United never really changed it -- week in, week out.

:03:12.:03:15.

All of these teams are built on a solid defence. I agree with Henry

:03:16.:03:21.

committee has adjusted the formation. The wingbacks are key,

:03:22.:03:29.

Hazard and Costa are special. N'Golo Kante and Matic are good up front.

:03:30.:03:34.

Moses has been out on loan to every Premier League club in the last few

:03:35.:03:38.

seasons. Alonso has come from nowhere, not ripping up any trees

:03:39.:03:43.

previously in the Premier League. A good set of players. He has given

:03:44.:03:47.

them confidence, they now have belief and they are buying into him

:03:48.:03:51.

and his velocity and are doing extremely well. They are full of

:03:52.:03:56.

confidence. Eni Aluko can you are around the Chelsea training Centre,

:03:57.:04:00.

do you notice a difference around the place? Gary Cahill said

:04:01.:04:04.

yesterday that the team have an invincibility about them. When they

:04:05.:04:08.

go onto the pitch, they know they will win. Gary Cahill himself had a

:04:09.:04:12.

shaky start, in that Arsenal game he made a mistake. He's come back in

:04:13.:04:17.

stature. The back three, Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill and David

:04:18.:04:20.

Luiz, they look solid and like they will not concede. Of 11 games, nine

:04:21.:04:27.

clean sheets. 11 games unbeaten. You could see

:04:28.:04:32.

with Hal Costa went over to Antonio Conte, there is a bond between the

:04:33.:04:36.

players. What made it special in terms of this achievement, it is

:04:37.:04:39.

pretty much the same set of players lasted that did so bad and Jose

:04:40.:04:45.

Mourinho. Clearly, there is an investment in Antonio Conte and what

:04:46.:04:50.

he is doing -- did so badly under Jose Mourinho.

:04:51.:04:53.

The best thing was losing against Arsenal that day. I cannot see them

:04:54.:04:58.

being beaten after they have changed so much. How do you get that mental

:04:59.:05:03.

strength and trust your players so quickly? Antonio Conte has two sides

:05:04.:05:08.

to him, he is quite a hard bike and really wants to suffer with his

:05:09.:05:13.

players on the sideline. He talks about it a lot, every ball is being

:05:14.:05:16.

kicked. It builds a bond and relationship.

:05:17.:05:22.

There was pressure on the players to improve on the last season. With new

:05:23.:05:27.

ideas and new formations, and a new manager. Obviously, it has worked in

:05:28.:05:32.

their favour. Winning helps hugely. When they first changed their

:05:33.:05:35.

system, if they lost the first game, they would have gone, I'm not

:05:36.:05:40.

sure... Winning one, winning two, the players go, we like this! And it

:05:41.:05:45.

builds from there. Yes, you got the formation right and worked on it but

:05:46.:05:49.

you need that bit of luck initially. When the manager comes in in

:05:50.:05:56.

January, if you have that honeymoon period.

:05:57.:05:57.

He changed it slightly, it worked. Henry will remind us, the game where

:05:58.:06:02.

Costa wanted to come off, he thought he was going to be booked or

:06:03.:06:06.

suspended, Antonio Conte went, no. It was a massive turning point in

:06:07.:06:12.

respect from only Costa, but the other players went, actually, I will

:06:13.:06:16.

not back down. I'm in charge and it is working. It could have gone one

:06:17.:06:20.

of two ways. Costa could have done what he did to Jose Mourinho.

:06:21.:06:25.

Downing tools, I would do this, I won't like it... But it went the

:06:26.:06:29.

other way. There are enough, you are right, and you can see this

:06:30.:06:32.

relationship he has is fantastic. That is what it is all about.

:06:33.:06:37.

Jose Mourinho had it two years ago. The relationship between the manager

:06:38.:06:40.

and player nowadays is not so much the coaching, it is key. Do you see

:06:41.:06:48.

a difference in Chelsea? The bench, they are strong there as well. He

:06:49.:06:53.

bought the most important footballer in 2016 in N'Golo Kante. He was

:06:54.:06:57.

Footballer of the Year last season. If anything he has improved him.

:06:58.:07:01.

He's let him off the lead a little bit.

:07:02.:07:04.

He says, go and attack. You saw those attempts yesterday on goal.

:07:05.:07:11.

And he is playing with better players. That will improve a bit. He

:07:12.:07:15.

did that with the French national side. I think that players respond

:07:16.:07:21.

to Conte, like Liverpool players with Jurgen Klopp. There is

:07:22.:07:25.

something about Conte, when he comes into the Press Conference, he is

:07:26.:07:29.

measured and it is a different contrast to the jack in the box

:07:30.:07:33.

getting the fans and the players going.

:07:34.:07:36.

He is very calm. If you have a manager who can go through the

:07:37.:07:41.

gears, who can trial these different things, who can be emotional and

:07:42.:07:44.

very intelligent and measured, a good man manager as well, you have

:07:45.:07:49.

one of the best around. He is not suddenly bursting onto the scene.

:07:50.:07:53.

This reputation with Italy and the national team at club level... And

:07:54.:07:57.

in the Euros, we forgot that this year Italy were one of the

:07:58.:08:00.

favourites in the tournament to win it. He had a fantastic Euros with

:08:01.:08:07.

Italy. Obviously, he has the confidence in that formation that we

:08:08.:08:11.

have not seen a lot in the Premier League. That the players are buying

:08:12.:08:16.

into. In terms of weaknesses, perhaps the back three, there could

:08:17.:08:20.

be a team who figures out how to get them with pace. Gary Cahill, I

:08:21.:08:24.

mentioned, he has made some mistakes this season but at the moment they

:08:25.:08:30.

are keeping those clean sheets, and winning 1-0. John Terry cannot even

:08:31.:08:35.

get into the team. That is testimony... It is consistency.

:08:36.:08:40.

Leicester made many changes to their starting line-up through the season.

:08:41.:08:45.

At Chelsea, 13 or 14... Manchester City at the back have made over 50

:08:46.:08:54.

changes. All good teams are built on consistency, especially defensively.

:08:55.:08:58.

You need that relationship and understanding. Forward players, you

:08:59.:09:01.

can say to them, express yourself and go and play. You cannot do that

:09:02.:09:06.

with defence. Players like to have that kind of consistency every week.

:09:07.:09:10.

They know their job and what they are doing. They know who they are

:09:11.:09:13.

playing alongside and it helps massively. We talk about consistency

:09:14.:09:20.

and in January that becomes the question, in the Daily Mirror this

:09:21.:09:22.

morning, they were talking about upsetting the balance.

:09:23.:09:26.

He will have to bring in a couple? You can always bring in a couple. It

:09:27.:09:32.

is not a huge problem. Willian did very well and had tragic

:09:33.:09:36.

circumstances. Pedro came in and did very well. Fabregas has played in

:09:37.:09:42.

the last few games, dipping in and out. You can change one or two, that

:09:43.:09:47.

is not a problem. But you cannot make wholesale changes every week.

:09:48.:09:51.

At Manchester City, that does not work. Look at players like

:09:52.:09:55.

Rodriguez, and they have other players who can do it. I would like

:09:56.:09:59.

to see him bring in a couple from the Academy.

:10:00.:10:02.

It is a gamble and it is difficult at Chelsea, it is about results and

:10:03.:10:05.

managers come and go quickly but look at the young players. You

:10:06.:10:09.

probably see them daily, it is probably one of the best academies

:10:10.:10:12.

in Europe. Let's give them a chance and not

:10:13.:10:21.

ship them away, give them a chance at Chelsea.

:10:22.:10:22.

Like Tammy Abrahams scoring goals in the lower leagues, you think, what

:10:23.:10:25.

point will they be given a chance that? If John Terry cannot get into

:10:26.:10:31.

the team... I think that Chelsea need another striker. For someone

:10:32.:10:36.

like Costa, suspended against Bournemouth, who else is really

:10:37.:10:40.

going to bear the burden of scoring goals? Hazard is scoring as well.

:10:41.:10:46.

Batshuayi? Does he have a lot of goals in him? That is the problem

:10:47.:10:51.

committee has great potential but we do not know. He is not going to get

:10:52.:10:55.

a start while Diego Costa is playing -- that is the problem, he has great

:10:56.:10:58.

attention. He will get a game, but the moment Costa is

:10:59.:11:07.

in... We have had some tweets, the

:11:08.:11:12.

reliance on Costa is a weakness. Weaknesses of Chelsea are the

:11:13.:11:18.

ballplaying skills of Alonso, Matic... It's interesting. They are

:11:19.:11:24.

better than you think. They have to do a certain job. N'Golo Kante and

:11:25.:11:28.

Matic can play, he does not give the ball away often. Moses has been

:11:29.:11:34.

exceptional. Alonzo, as we talked about, he is very steady and does a

:11:35.:11:44.

great job for the team -- Alonso. Conte does the best for the team,

:11:45.:11:46.

not just putting in the stars. Swansea's 3-0 defeat

:11:47.:11:49.

at Middlesbrough leaves them level on points with Hull,

:11:50.:11:52.

who are bottom. Here is Bob Bradley... It's the same

:11:53.:12:03.

story. We began OK, but we conceded before we know it, we are down two.

:12:04.:12:07.

In the second half you have to push a little bit. The final product is

:12:08.:12:12.

not good enough. REPORTER: It is clear that you are

:12:13.:12:16.

about building resilience, how do you do that if you do not see it at

:12:17.:12:21.

the moment? It comes from making plays at important moments and the

:12:22.:12:24.

group mentality. You can talk about it but it has too happen on the

:12:25.:12:27.

field. We are disappointed now. We came in

:12:28.:12:30.

with a good idea that this was a match where we could take on points.

:12:31.:12:36.

We didn't, but we turn our attention to two really important home matches

:12:37.:12:38.

at the beginning of the Christmas period.

:12:39.:12:42.

I was at the game yesterday, it's another example of Swansea's

:12:43.:12:45.

terrible away form. They must address it, Danny? Even that game

:12:46.:12:52.

where they won 5-4, he cannot concede four goals and expect a win

:12:53.:12:59.

every single one. He has won one game.

:13:00.:13:00.

Normally you have the honeymoon period when a new manager comes in,

:13:01.:13:04.

it is a massive gamble. I thought he does not know the Premier League at

:13:05.:13:07.

all. An American owner, an American coach

:13:08.:13:11.

or manager, that has not worked. The worry now is, what do they do in

:13:12.:13:17.

January? Give him money to spend? Bring in players into a league that

:13:18.:13:21.

he does not really know? Or, change the manager? It must be on their

:13:22.:13:25.

minds at the moment. But this is more than Bob Bradley, it's a

:13:26.:13:30.

culture of almost Tikay at the club over the last two years in terms

:13:31.:13:35.

of... -- decay. When they lost players like Ashley Williams, he was

:13:36.:13:40.

a leader and an outstanding defender. You must replace quality

:13:41.:13:44.

with quality and they happened. When Wilfried Bony left, and Ashley

:13:45.:13:47.

Williams, you could argue certain places in central midfield. We could

:13:48.:13:53.

blame Bob Bradley and he probably won't last that long. Do you think

:13:54.:13:58.

that they have lost their way, Swansea? Definitely. Once upon a

:13:59.:14:02.

time, and Rogers, Martinez... They brought through players and had a

:14:03.:14:05.

certain style. Even under Garry Monk. They lost players every year,

:14:06.:14:12.

but they manage... They will bring managers through who understood the

:14:13.:14:16.

philosophy. They have gone down the opposite route. New owners, new

:14:17.:14:19.

manager. He does not know the philosophy of the club. Suddenly, it

:14:20.:14:21.

is falling apart. We have got some tweets. Ian reckons

:14:22.:14:33.

Leeds will be changing leagues next season! This one says, I am

:14:34.:14:37.

surprised Bradley has not been sacked already. Allardyce is what we

:14:38.:14:42.

need, he says. It is crazy to think that he has only been in for seven

:14:43.:14:47.

or eight games, ten games, and he's already having to fight for his

:14:48.:14:49.

credibility as a manager? This is the think what is the solution?

:14:50.:14:54.

Solution cannot be to sack Bob Bradley. Because they've already

:14:55.:14:59.

changed managers to war three times. And Barry Davies asked the identity

:15:00.:15:04.

from when Brendan Rodgers was there, Martinez they have a of play. I

:15:05.:15:09.

think it is the players, I think it is a lack of quality. And what have

:15:10.:15:13.

they got to lose in January by bringing better players in? That has

:15:14.:15:18.

to be the solution, because otherwise I think they will find

:15:19.:15:23.

themselves whether gated. They have got immense quality in Gylfi

:15:24.:15:25.

Sigurdsson, and I suppose it will be a question whether they can hang

:15:26.:15:28.

onto him? Gylfi Sigurdsson has been superb for them, he has been one of

:15:29.:15:32.

their few shining lights. The other issue Bob Bradley has at the moment

:15:33.:15:37.

is, there are some good managers out there, waiting by the phone, whether

:15:38.:15:44.

it's Sam Allardyce, Gary Rowett, who ridiculously lost his job. If you

:15:45.:15:47.

went for him, maybe you would we going back to the old Swansea

:15:48.:15:50.

philosophy, just giving someone a chance. Maybe they will revisit Ryan

:15:51.:15:56.

Giggs, I don't know. He has been touted for that position in the

:15:57.:16:00.

past. Let's move on to a team who currently sit bottom. You know Hull

:16:01.:16:04.

reasonably well from when your brother was playing for them. They

:16:05.:16:08.

lost at West Ham yesterday but there were a bit unlucky, I think West Ham

:16:09.:16:11.

gave Man of the Match to the posts after the game! Yes, I have never

:16:12.:16:19.

seen anything like it. Hull started really strong, and they've lost

:16:20.:16:24.

their way bit. They just don't have quality, they don't have a

:16:25.:16:26.

goal-scorer in the team. When you look at someone like Middlesbrough,

:16:27.:16:29.

with Negredo confident, Gaston Ramirez playing well. They have got

:16:30.:16:36.

goals in their team. Hull just don't have enough goals in the team I

:16:37.:16:42.

think to stay up, unfortunately. I don't know what's happened since the

:16:43.:16:47.

start of the season for them to lose their way, but it just seems they're

:16:48.:16:51.

not winning games, not even drawing games at the moment. I think you

:16:52.:16:57.

have got to look at the owners as well. There is a bad atmosphere at

:16:58.:17:01.

the club, your brother probably experienced it, you have got owners

:17:02.:17:06.

who are completely unloved, there's tension with the fans, they're

:17:07.:17:11.

falling out over the direction of the club, and they even tried to

:17:12.:17:15.

change the name of the club. When you've got that negative atmosphere

:17:16.:17:21.

in the background, it must impact. Yes, I think it has been unsteady

:17:22.:17:25.

for years. Steve Bruce was the mainstay, to a certain extent,

:17:26.:17:29.

brought a lot of players in, and at least the players knew his voice,

:17:30.:17:33.

knew what he wanted. Do you think Steve Bruce saw it coming? I think

:17:34.:17:44.

so. You're right, the pure lack of quality, if you're relying on

:17:45.:17:47.

Mbokani to keep you in the Premier League, Norwich found out, you're

:17:48.:17:50.

going to struggle. And that's a problem for them. Steve Bruce left,

:17:51.:17:55.

new manager came in, another transfer window, no players of any

:17:56.:17:58.

quality were brought in. And ultimately, teams with worse players

:17:59.:18:04.

generally finish down at the bottom. I think Hull have had a good enough

:18:05.:18:08.

crack over the last five or six years to actually figure out how to

:18:09.:18:11.

stay in the Premier League. They have been a yo-yo team. So for me, I

:18:12.:18:17.

think they have an opportunity this year when they were promoted to

:18:18.:18:20.

actually build a squad that was going to really compete, like how

:18:21.:18:26.

Bournemouth did last season. And maybe it's because of the owner,

:18:27.:18:30.

they just do not seem to get the squad Chilton in order to stay in

:18:31.:18:34.

the Premier League rather than always being in a relegation battle.

:18:35.:18:39.

And then, how do you attract players without that harmony behind the

:18:40.:18:45.

scenes? And it is difficult to bring players to Hull. I think even people

:18:46.:18:49.

up there will say. Hull has got a lot of attractions but it is not

:18:50.:18:53.

like a London club for players in the transfer window. I was going to

:18:54.:18:58.

ask you to name some of the attractions. They've got some fairly

:18:59.:19:02.

well-known museums, they got some nice countryside nearby. You live

:19:03.:19:08.

nearby, don't you?! They've got The Deep! It was a must-win for them -

:19:09.:19:17.

do you see signs of life with Sunderland? If you have got Jermain

:19:18.:19:26.

Defoe, you've got a chance because he's just extraordinary, his

:19:27.:19:28.

understanding of the art of finishing. And I think, they have

:19:29.:19:33.

got Jordan Pickford, one of the best young goalkeepers around, who is

:19:34.:19:38.

remarkably mature for a young goalkeeper. But wealthy clubs

:19:39.:19:44.

looking for goalkeepers, and we may come onto Liverpool at some point,

:19:45.:19:47.

they're going to look at Jordan Pickford. And Sunderland will have

:19:48.:19:50.

to really fight to keep a talent like him. What I like about him, for

:19:51.:19:57.

a young goalkeeper, he's pretty commanding. He shouts at far more

:19:58.:20:00.

senior players, but they've got to hold onto him. You say that, and

:20:01.:20:06.

showed he is vitally important, but have not been able to make much

:20:07.:20:11.

revenue in recent years from selling players on. And the chairman has

:20:12.:20:14.

said there will not be much in the kitty from January. So they will

:20:15.:20:18.

have to do this all with the players they have? When I look at their

:20:19.:20:22.

side, they've got a lot more quality than Hull and a lot more experience.

:20:23.:20:28.

I find it a bit strange that there is no money to bring in, with the TV

:20:29.:20:35.

deal last year, whatever it was. I think he said limited funds,

:20:36.:20:39.

whatever that means. Surely you've got to gamble, even if that means

:20:40.:20:44.

bringing in loan players. People who would go there for the end of the

:20:45.:20:48.

season, take a bonus if they stay up, that kind of thing. You've got

:20:49.:20:52.

to freshen it up somehow in January. But you're right come as long as

:20:53.:20:55.

they've got Jermain Defoe, they've got a great chance. They've got a

:20:56.:21:01.

goal-scorer. Hull haven't, Swansea haven't. I think Victor Anichebe has

:21:02.:21:05.

done well since he has come in as well. Big target striker, complete

:21:06.:21:10.

opposite to Jermain Defoe, but has scored some important goals. Played

:21:11.:21:16.

under David Moyes at Everton. He has been a big positive as well. I think

:21:17.:21:19.

Sunderland are looking good, but obviously, behind-the-scenes, it

:21:20.:21:23.

sounds like quite a strained situation with the owners. Yes, it's

:21:24.:21:31.

really only that defeat to Swansea which has been a lot in the last

:21:32.:21:37.

couple of months. You see the resilience under David Moyes at

:21:38.:21:43.

Sunderland? I think recently we have seen the David Moyes of Everton and

:21:44.:21:48.

Preston, rather than the slightly defeatist, coward figure at

:21:49.:21:50.

Manchester United, and at encouraging. Because he's a battler,

:21:51.:21:57.

he's a tough individual. If they get the Everton Meuse, then they have

:21:58.:22:05.

got a chance. They definitely need to invest, however, in January. We

:22:06.:22:11.

will move on to me today's games now. At four o'clock, Tottenham play

:22:12.:22:15.

Burnley. Natalie Pirks spoke earlier in the week to Dele Alli about the

:22:16.:22:19.

influence of his manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

:22:20.:22:34.

Yes, he's been massive for me. When I left Milton Keynes I was looking

:22:35.:22:39.

for a manager with the same kind of philosophy, the same way he puts

:22:40.:22:43.

trust in kids. And I can see that in him. He has been a massive part of

:22:44.:22:54.

my Premier League career so far. He's a decent player as well, isn't

:22:55.:23:00.

he? Does he get involved in training with you guys? We have this thing

:23:01.:23:07.

called boxes, I think a lot of teams to it, and he gets involved in that,

:23:08.:23:11.

but I don't know why he does not get involved in any of the ones that

:23:12.:23:16.

need some running! Tell us about the song Spurs fans sing about you. You

:23:17.:23:21.

know the one I'm talking about. I know, but I'm not going to sing it.

:23:22.:23:35.

I think it's like, we've got Alli... Dele Alli... I just don't think you

:23:36.:23:47.

understand... He only cost five mill, he's better than Ozil... So

:23:48.:23:54.

obviously you only cost five mill, but are you better than Mesut Ozil?

:23:55.:23:59.

That's not for me to decide. He said he wasn't going to sing! Elliot Lee,

:24:00.:24:05.

I think you know him quite well, Henry - how important has Pochettino

:24:06.:24:11.

been in his development? It has been great seeing his developer and under

:24:12.:24:14.

Karl Robinson at MK Dons. I was in the office one day and this kid just

:24:15.:24:19.

walked in, and he said a few words, and he was very polite and confident

:24:20.:24:23.

and wandered off. Karl Robinson just said, this kid is going straight to

:24:24.:24:30.

the top. He's obviously doing well under Pochettino. This comparison

:24:31.:24:35.

with Mesut Ozil, I mean, come on, let's have a bit of feet on the

:24:36.:24:38.

ground. Mahsoob Ozil is a special player. Dele Alli obviously is

:24:39.:24:42.

reaching for the stars, but it will take time for him. He is a special

:24:43.:24:53.

player but don't get involved in, I am better than Ozil. But he is a

:24:54.:24:56.

special talent. It has not been quite so serene for him this season.

:24:57.:25:02.

There's been accusations of diving, a dip in form - how do you view how

:25:03.:25:06.

he has handled the situation? I think with only four goals this

:25:07.:25:12.

season, obviously, we are expecting more from him in terms of goals. But

:25:13.:25:17.

I think we forget that he's very young, and it's his second season

:25:18.:25:23.

after a lot of noise about him. Lot of talk. This is something which

:25:24.:25:29.

happens to young players. I think it is the same for Ross Barkley, he had

:25:30.:25:34.

a great season and then a quiet season. I think we need to

:25:35.:25:37.

understand that this is a young player, and he's got his feet on the

:25:38.:25:42.

ground, but he's not going to be amazing every single season. But I

:25:43.:25:46.

think he has got a good head on his shoulders, comes across really well

:25:47.:25:50.

and understands his responsible at ease as Tottenham player. There

:25:51.:25:56.

seems to be a maturity. And last season was his breakthrough season,

:25:57.:25:59.

and he was exceptional. Nobody expected him to be as good as he

:26:00.:26:04.

was. Even if he gets ten goals this season, for a midfielder, that's

:26:05.:26:08.

pretty outstanding. That is not a bad return, and we are not even at

:26:09.:26:13.

Christmas, he's got four over-egged. Every chance he will get ten. He's

:26:14.:26:18.

just got to keep working hard. That's what I like about him, he

:26:19.:26:22.

does work hard. He has an influence on the game even if he's not scoring

:26:23.:26:29.

goals. You see the amount of running he gets through, closing down,

:26:30.:26:31.

putting tackles in, see that sort of thing. There is more to his game

:26:32.:26:37.

than just the goals. Of course they're a huge bonus. But I mean,

:26:38.:26:47.

Ozil has won World Cups! That is not for him to say! Is he better? Not

:26:48.:26:53.

yes,. Of course not. Potential? Potentially. He's a completely

:26:54.:27:00.

different player. Dele Alli is almost the old-fashioned English

:27:01.:27:05.

midfielder - box to box, happy to put his foot in, can score goals.

:27:06.:27:11.

And that's what I like about him. There's not one part of his game you

:27:12.:27:15.

look at and think I'm a that's a real weakness. Of course, there are

:27:16.:27:21.

things which he can work on. With Ozil, maybe it would be tracking

:27:22.:27:26.

back. Dele Alli has all of those facets. As he gets better and

:27:27.:27:29.

better, I think he will eventually become a complete midfielder. That's

:27:30.:27:35.

later on this afternoon. The early kick-off today is Bournemouth

:27:36.:27:38.

against Southampton, and we can now get the team news from Alistair

:27:39.:27:42.

Mann. Bournemouth only make one change, with Callum Wilson coming in

:27:43.:27:45.

up front in place of Benik Afobe. Southampton played on Wednesday, and

:27:46.:27:52.

they make six changes. Ishida is in, Cedric is back, Harry Reid makes his

:27:53.:27:57.

first start of the season. Rodriguez also comes in. Goal of the

:27:58.:28:12.

That was of course Simon Madden and not Alistair Mann.

:28:13.:28:18.

On 5 Live tomorrow night - commentary on the Merseyside derby.

:28:19.:28:21.

I love derbies. I have a lot in my life. Of course, when you are in

:28:22.:28:38.

Germany, and you have the big derby with Dortmund, against Bayern. So I

:28:39.:28:47.

know how it feels and I am really looking forward to it. If you win,

:28:48.:28:51.

everything is good, but of causes you a lot of problems when you lose

:28:52.:28:58.

it. Its pressure, of course, but we all love it, we want the loud

:28:59.:29:06.

stadium, we want the emotional crowd, all that stuff. Most of them

:29:07.:29:12.

will probably be on the Everton side, but that is no problem. It's

:29:13.:29:17.

still loud, but our job is to make Goodison Park as quiet as possible.

:29:18.:29:23.

Dealing with pressure, it is not so different to the normal life. It was

:29:24.:29:28.

being as good prepared as possible. It is not about ignoring the

:29:29.:29:31.

circumstances, it is about using them. We have spoken a little bit in

:29:32.:29:35.

the last few weeks about this kind of being angry, but in a sports way

:29:36.:29:42.

angry. We do not have to talk too much about motivation for something

:29:43.:29:46.

like this, but it's clear they are full of motivation. So it is really

:29:47.:29:49.

more about doing the right thing in the right moment. In a very

:29:50.:29:57.

emotional atmosphere. Jurgen Klopp loves a derby. Everybody does! Let's

:29:58.:30:01.

start with Ronald Koeman's claimed that this is bigger than El Clasico.

:30:02.:30:06.

Can he say that? No! On Merseyside, maybe! The Merseyside derby is huge

:30:07.:30:14.

but it does not always define the title race. Whereas El Clasico,

:30:15.:30:19.

Ronald Koeman scored some great goals in El Clasico, and back often

:30:20.:30:26.

decides the Spanish league. I think what is great about the Merseyside

:30:27.:30:29.

derby is, if very rarely lets us down. We get derbies in London,

:30:30.:30:36.

whatever, or Manchester, and sometimes they are a bit dull. The

:30:37.:30:42.

Merseyside derby is always cut and thrust, there will be cards, there

:30:43.:30:47.

will be plenty of passion, the atmosphere is always unbelievable.

:30:48.:30:50.

And it generally it is a fantastic game to watch.

:30:51.:30:57.

It has the same importance to the Liverpool and Everton fans, that

:30:58.:31:02.

anticipation and how he never lets us down with that game. It is

:31:03.:31:06.

probably an important game for both of the teams at this stage in the

:31:07.:31:10.

season, especially Liverpool. Chasing Chelsea at the top... And El

:31:11.:31:14.

Clasico has a political and historical element. The derbies in

:31:15.:31:23.

this country do not. But El Clasico is not a derby. The whole city is

:31:24.:31:27.

focused on this one game at Goodison Park. And Jurgen Klopp would like to

:31:28.:31:32.

make it quiet but he may have to use youngsters? There are some injury

:31:33.:31:37.

problems? Yes, but I was at Goodison Park the other night for the Arsenal

:31:38.:31:44.

game. It was just one of those great, great and noisy occasions.

:31:45.:31:47.

But we are tinged with some sadness because at some point they had to

:31:48.:31:52.

move on from there. The clock is counting down as to how many derbies

:31:53.:31:57.

will be left there. I guarantee that it would be raucous. There are a few

:31:58.:32:01.

youngsters who Jurgen Klopp would have to put his faith in. How

:32:02.:32:06.

difficult is it for the younger players? We will talk about this

:32:07.:32:10.

goalkeeper situation but they take a lot of criticism? Those young

:32:11.:32:13.

players. We spoke about Ross Barkley and Dele Alli. Is it a difficult

:32:14.:32:18.

time to be a young player? No, it is what you are used to. When I broke

:32:19.:32:24.

into this senior football, 15, 16, and played on the reserve teams,

:32:25.:32:29.

players and coaches DQ world and you are getting ready for that

:32:30.:32:34.

preparation. -- date you out. People ask, what is it like playing in

:32:35.:32:45.

front of 40,000 fans -- dig you out. It is that growing process and the

:32:46.:32:49.

mental challenges for young footballers. There are a lot of

:32:50.:32:53.

players with a lot of skill and potential out there, but it is how

:32:54.:32:58.

tough can they be mentally? Can they handle the occasion, the criticism,

:32:59.:33:01.

reading the papers and reading bad stuff or not. However they choose to

:33:02.:33:05.

do it, it is handling the mental side of the game. They all have

:33:06.:33:09.

ability. It is how they deal with the big occasions. Players these

:33:10.:33:13.

days, it should not be a problem for them. The best young players do not

:33:14.:33:17.

think about it but see it as an opportunity to show what they can

:33:18.:33:22.

do. You look at Wayne Rooney when he made his debut at age 16. He did not

:33:23.:33:28.

care that he was in front of 50,000 plus people. That's natural

:33:29.:33:33.

ability... It is a buzz, not a fear. Senior players, as we say with

:33:34.:33:37.

England, Henry, often it becomes a fear. It's about what young players

:33:38.:33:42.

do. It is that adrenaline rush that you get from being in that

:33:43.:33:45.

environment. It is massive. But you are right, in one of Steven

:33:46.:33:51.

Gerrard's first games for Liverpool, he was sent off twice, I think, in

:33:52.:33:56.

the Merseyside derby. They have to have some ice in their veins as

:33:57.:34:02.

well. We touched on carriers. How do you view the situation? Mignolet

:34:03.:34:10.

will start, how is it reviewed by the player himself -- Karius. It is

:34:11.:34:17.

unlike us to wrap things up in the media! Actually, I have an element

:34:18.:34:22.

of sympathy for Karius. He came out and he could have pulled that

:34:23.:34:25.

interview in the Daily Mail and said, I do not want to do this at

:34:26.:34:29.

the moment. He answered questions. That is all we can ask for as

:34:30.:34:33.

journalists. They come up with honest answers. Gary Neville reacted

:34:34.:34:38.

to it, but Gary Neville, throughout his career, you knew him well,

:34:39.:34:43.

whenever you spoke to him, you got an honest answer. I think we can be

:34:44.:34:47.

oversensitive in this country, as a media. If a player wants to talk and

:34:48.:34:52.

say particular things, fantastic. The person who comes out best is

:34:53.:34:56.

Jurgen Klopp. He has made a decision, away from all of the

:34:57.:35:00.

noise, not reacting to the media or Gary Neville, he's made a decision

:35:01.:35:05.

he thinks is best. We moan so often about players after games, their

:35:06.:35:09.

interviews are planned... The same thing time and time again. We wonder

:35:10.:35:18.

why. Gary has come out and said his piece... I do not think it was

:35:19.:35:21.

particularly sensationalised. I do not think the Daily Mail did. It was

:35:22.:35:25.

a thoughtful interview. With Gary Neville getting it

:35:26.:35:30.

Involved... Then Phil Neville jumped in, more was made bit than people...

:35:31.:35:38.

Social media is not the most sane of debating chambers! But, it is the

:35:39.:35:42.

biggest. I think that the goalkeeper position is always tricky. Only one

:35:43.:35:49.

player can play. Usually, that player plays throughout the season.

:35:50.:35:58.

I remember at Chelsea, Cortois came in. It's a difficult situation, at

:35:59.:36:04.

the time he had two top keepers. It is sensitive, when goalkeepers are

:36:05.:36:08.

dropped, the second comes in... It is a sensitive situation. It is such

:36:09.:36:14.

a specialist position. In the past, there was always a definite number

:36:15.:36:19.

one, a number two, and now it is close. We don't know who number one

:36:20.:36:25.

is. Who is it? We don't know. Cortois is very even. There is not

:36:26.:36:32.

this distinction, but we never number two.

:36:33.:36:34.

Cortois and Petr Cech. The moment that someone is left out, it becomes

:36:35.:36:38.

headline news. It happened with Joe Hart. There is a certain number one

:36:39.:36:43.

at Manchester United. Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He has been on

:36:44.:36:48.

sensational form. He scored twice yesterday when

:36:49.:36:51.

Manchester United won. Let's

:36:52.:36:52.

hear from, his manager. I am so pleased for him. He is the kind of

:36:53.:37:00.

player who does not have to prove anything to anyone. When he comes to

:37:01.:37:05.

England in that period of his career, to come to the most

:37:06.:37:09.

difficult championship in the world. To come in the later period... I

:37:10.:37:15.

think it is proof that he a super man in his mentality. He is doing

:37:16.:37:24.

fantastic work. At age 35, it is a dream for any one of 25, a striker

:37:25.:37:29.

at the age of 25, to the Premier League and impress how he is doing.

:37:30.:37:34.

How impressed have you been as a fellow striker, at the ripe young

:37:35.:37:39.

age of 35 with Zlatan Ibrahimovic? I was very impressed, there was a lot

:37:40.:37:41.

of doubt with him coming into the Premier League. People said

:37:42.:37:46.

that he was too static and a big personality in the dressing room.

:37:47.:37:50.

But it is proof that class is permanent and age is just a number

:37:51.:37:55.

for him. With 16 goals in all competitions, he is the Talisman,

:37:56.:37:58.

and as Jose Mourinho said, he is unstoppable. Other players for

:37:59.:38:06.

Manchester United need to chip in. In the event that Ibrahimovic does

:38:07.:38:09.

not score, they have a problem. Wayne Rooney has two chip in,

:38:10.:38:13.

Martial, Marcus Rashford... I have been very impressed. He is a good

:38:14.:38:20.

player around the dressing room as well. Players appear to like him. I

:38:21.:38:24.

think people did not expect that. They expected this godlike figure to

:38:25.:38:28.

come in and ruled the roost. That is key that you make that point,

:38:29.:38:34.

anybody expecting slattern Ibrahimovic to be, I'm the best, you

:38:35.:38:38.

are not worthy... But Jose Mourinho before, they have had a good

:38:39.:38:44.

relationship. Ancelotti loves him. Everyone says he works so hard in

:38:45.:38:47.

training, one of the hardest workers. He would like to win

:38:48.:38:51.

everything, no matter what. Win at all costs. Running is not

:38:52.:38:56.

everybody's game. It does not matter if he loses a yard of pace. He is an

:38:57.:39:01.

droppable at the moment. Jose Mourinho has always had a

:39:02.:39:05.

Talisman striker. At any club he has been at. He has a go to guide.

:39:06.:39:08.

Whether it is drop, Costa. Now it is Zlatan Ibrahimovic -- -- he has a go

:39:09.:39:29.

to guy, whether it is Drogba. At the 21st, there was this Ryan Shawcross

:39:30.:39:36.

Memorial game, outstanding at Stockholm you got those four goals

:39:37.:39:38.

with the overhead kick. It is brilliant to see him here.

:39:39.:39:43.

With the lack of stardust on the pitch, it is in the dugout, the real

:39:44.:39:48.

stars in Bayern Munich and Barcelona and Real Madrid...

:39:49.:39:51.

To have him, one of the true icons of the game, that is great. Ask any

:39:52.:39:55.

defender, many would say, I would rather play against him than a

:39:56.:40:00.

Cuero, he is static. -- Sergio Aguero.

:40:01.:40:06.

But that goal yesterday, it was a typical Manchester United goal,

:40:07.:40:08.

straight over to Jesse Lingard, straight in.

:40:09.:40:12.

Head goal. He scores a variety of goals. He has

:40:13.:40:16.

surprised people with his righty in the way that he campaign and how he

:40:17.:40:22.

has adapted to English football -- variety.

:40:23.:40:23.

At Manchester City, they host Arsenal today... An interesting

:40:24.:40:28.

piece has been written by Glenn Hoddle in the mail on Sunday.

:40:29.:40:33.

He is talking about Pep Guardiola. When he came to England, I said that

:40:34.:40:36.

this would be his biggest test and he would have too adapt to our game.

:40:37.:40:41.

At the moment I am watching football subside. That is a strong word --

:40:42.:40:48.

football suicide. It is interesting coming from Glenn Hoddle, I would

:40:49.:40:51.

have thought he would have echoed Pep Guardiola's philosophy with

:40:52.:40:56.

playing football from the back. He did it at Chelsea himself.

:40:57.:41:02.

Football suicide is a bit strong. And slightly underestimate the fact

:41:03.:41:06.

that this is one of the most intelligent coaches, and one of the

:41:07.:41:11.

most successful. He will adapt, you know their pitfalls and ambushes.

:41:12.:41:18.

He will respond. I do not like this that Pep Guardiola is struggling a

:41:19.:41:21.

bit. He is one of the greatest coaches. We need him at Saint

:41:22.:41:26.

Georges Park, speaking to our younger coaches and educating as. He

:41:27.:41:30.

has had some problems but will get it right. Some of that couple I saw

:41:31.:41:35.

from Manchester City was some of the best at the Premier League since the

:41:36.:41:39.

invincible is. He is having issues defensively. He does not know his

:41:40.:41:46.

best team. It is not squad rotation at Manchester City, but I am going

:41:47.:41:51.

to change it for the sake of change. Over 50 to the starting line-up

:41:52.:41:55.

already. That causes a lot of problems. Kolarov at centre-half,

:41:56.:42:00.

left-back, left of the three... Wingback... Players all over the

:42:01.:42:03.

place. Defensive players like consistency. Pep will get it right,

:42:04.:42:10.

but it is the first time he's been in a very competitive league. He's

not at Sporting Gijon, or in Germany, where Lewandowski scored,

:42:19.:42:22.

it is easy... You take your foot off the gas... Every single game is

:42:23.:42:27.

competitive until the end. Physical demands are so much different in the

:42:28.:42:31.

Premier League. But he has played in teams where if he beats two others,

:42:32.:42:35.

he has won the league. He can concentrate on Champions

:42:36.:42:38.

League games. This is completely different and maybe it is taking

:42:39.:42:40.

him... He had a fantastic start and

:42:41.:42:43.

everybody said that he was a genius and would walk it.

:42:44.:42:48.

Now, maybe not? This is the thing. If he was winning football matches,

:42:49.:42:50.

we would still say that he's a genius

:42:51.:42:54.

but because he is losing. We are saying that he is a prisoner...

:42:55.:43:03.

Well, Glenn Hoddle, he is a prisoner of his own ideology. But this guy

:43:04.:43:05.

has won 21 trophies in seven years. That's three every year. He won't

:43:06.:43:10.

change, why should he? He has won a lot of them. The differences, the

:43:11.:43:14.

other teams he had, coming through Barcelona, world-class players in

:43:15.:43:18.

every position. He did not change that team a lot. Bayern Munich,

:43:19.:43:22.

world-class players in every single position. Did not have to change

:43:23.:43:29.

that team weekend, week out. -- week in.

:43:30.:43:33.

With Manchester City, the goalkeeper out immediately, Stones has

:43:34.:43:35.

magnificent potential, who plays with him?

:43:36.:43:39.

Midfield... Sergio Aguero is brilliant. He needs to change

:43:40.:43:44.

defenders in the transfer window. Three decent defenders is what he

:43:45.:43:46.

needs. A big transfer window in January.

:43:47.:43:49.

You can hear Manchester City v Arsenal on 5 Live at four o'clock.
