England v New Zealand Rugby League: Four Nations

Hello and welcome to the England dressing room, it has been 44 yours

since England and Great Britain one a major competition, but beginning

the four Nations against New Zealand, hopes are high. Australia

and Scotland also make up the teams but the excitement is around

England, with the new manager Wayne Bennett and because this man is

back. And sewers is international rugby league under BBC. -- so is.

It is the four Nations, on the BBC, new era for England when the captain

Sam Burgos. And all under the watchful eye of the new head coach

Australian Wayne Bennett. That has ruffled some feathers. Plenty to

discuss. New Zealand, England's first opponents. And even although

England defeated them in this series last year, it always seems as though

you still have a hangover for England from the semifinal defeat in

2013. It is a fresh start, and a fresh competition. It is the four

Nations. Everybody cleanly job in the group stages. And then the top

two, at the end of the three weeks meet in the final at Anfield. This

is the trophy that they are going to be playing for. And alongside me,

the former New Zealand international Robbie Hunter, and Kevin Sinfield.

Even although this is a great competition at this stage, does

every game feel like a knockout? I think today is important, with home

advantage at Huddersfield we just want them to come out and perform. I

know that they are really looking forward to coming here and playing

well. Is that because when England looked at the next two fixtures,

expected to beat Scotland and in Australia. I know you are expected

to win every game but you do not want to be going into that meeting,

-- needing a win? I do not think you do. It is not ideal. But Kiwis also

want to win. With Sam back as the Captain Edward be good to go out at

this packed stadium and get the win. Would you have concerns about New

Zealand, after losing to England possibly today that they would not

want to go to Australia, or do you think the psychology is different? I

think we understand when they are students come to these four Nations

competitions, they have been odds on favourites. Even although New

Zealand are number one, Australia just seem to have this thing about

them. The game against New Zealand two weeks ago, they looked so good.

New Zealand have spent the last few weeks working on these things, but

yet to put together 30 minutes, as opposed to 80 minutes. You said New

Zealand are number one. That could go. Australia could replace them.

Would that be a bigger blow? What matters more? Winning every game.

The world ranking, that is just statistics. But this ties ino

emotion, it is preparation for the scheme and getting off to the

correct start. The first deem was last night. We are going to show you

some highlights of that. And later we will speak to Sam Burgess and

Wayne Bennett. This is the England team that is going to be starting.

That is a massive forward pack. Editors. It is huge. We are known

for the performances of the pack, and his last performance as an

England international in 2013, arguably the best in the world. It

is good to have him back. And when you looked at some of the new faces,

obviously Sam Burgess coming back, but Jonny Lomax a cap against the

French, got and Luke Gale. Some excitement. Exactly. I am delighted

to see Jonny Lomax. He has got the nod. Some magnificent with Saints.

Form and Luke Gale has been outstanding with Castleford. Just

got better and better. I look forward to seeing them today. We

will look ahead to the New Zealand team shortly. Sam Burgess, doing

some stretches, what is the technical term for that? Just band!

And while he is doing that we can speak to Wayne Bennett. You have

just had a couple of weeks with the players, what has been the focus?

Just to get them training well. And the game, the competition. Just do

have some belief. What has Luke Gale done, to have pushed himself ahead

of Williams? It is a specialist position. And Jonny Lomax, at full

back? What was the thinking? I just thought that he did a couple of

things that I like. What is going to be key? Executing well. And with a

view to getting to the final, how much pressure on you to win this

game, get off to the winning start? I do not feel the pressure, the

pressure is just for us to play well. Were obviously excited to see

Sam Burgess back, you have made him the captain, what leadership can he

bring? Certainly from the front, going to be a good captain. Huge

pack for us. They have a big one. How important? Whoever wins that

wins the game. You have had that personal attack, some of us waded

in. I have seen nothing, heard nothing. Some added space facing

Australia. Do you think they are worried about it taking charge of

England? I have no idea. Good luck today. We will talk more about the

Australian comments later, but my sense is Tanya may need to go to

every interview with about 30 questions. That was almost awkward.

Just such a cool character. He has been at the forefront of years. The

media does not manage him, he manages the media. I was at a dinner

this week, he's so cool. As a Kiwi, he always made me frightened. We

will get a longer interview with Dave Woods later, about the ethos,

he gets nothing in these interviews and they assume that players like

that? I found that amusing. Do you want to till, -- tell Tanya? She

interviewed him on Tuesday as actually got the best out of them.

He just wants to manage the team, and that comes across to the

players. I have seen how hard that they have worked, and that is down

to his magic. The eschewing coach has had a pop at him. After the game

last night. If you that in greater detail. Is that part and parcel of

Rugby League? It should be. It states column inches, gets us

talking, I love that. Two Aussies having a go, stoke the fire! Take a

look at this New Zealand team. How can the end the jinx? V have not won

a competition in the UK since 2005. I looked at the opening 79 New

Zealand have chosen, all of them have been outstanding over the

years. The new additions have been striking, and probably, the one to

watch Jason Taumalolo. Bashes people! He has got everything in his

repertoire. The worrying thing from my point of view, from England

viewpoint, the half backs, so much experience. Spine, so experienced.

And they know each other Warriors. From plenty more build-up to come.

That is a lovely fruit platter! And we will continue the build-up to

England New Zealand. And we have got an interview with with Wayne

Bennett, and Sam Burgess, getting the thoughts of the New Zealand

camp. But we can show you what happened at the four Nations last

night. The first meeting between Australia and Scotland. That took

place at Hull. Flames go up. Smith and Brough lead out the sides. The

no nation outside the big three has won in 12 attempts since expansion.

It is an auto loan evening, at Hull. Can Scotland digging deeper, to make

it what 13. They have said it is the strongest squad that Scotland have

ever assembled. But it remains a team of superstars. Australia have

made changes. Strong side. Five debutants. Packed full of

experience. Scotland have some new faces. Not least Lewis Tierney,

Grand Final winner with Wigan. And Steve MacCormack, 13th year. And we

are ready to go. Smith will swing the left boot. Big hit as well!

Scotland need a quick start. Just need a good kick, good chase, but

Australia have signalled the intent already with some strong contact. It

is a decent start defensively. Brough, kicking, will that be a

tactic tonight? The four Nations, under way. I think speaking before

the game, about the threat of Brough, you expect to see the back

rowers for Australia target bin defensively.

That will help Scotland. But kept in play. It is going to call high,

aerial once again. Konck on. First wobble from Scotland. It was a great

kick. It is difficult when it was between the winner under a

full-back, who is going to be challenging. You do not expect that,

from Brough, the captain of the side. First opportunity for

Australia. McCormack says we're not here to lie

down, get autographs, swap jerseys. Slicing through the gap! It has

taken for under minutes, Australia have the lead. Creates the overlap.

It as a. For Australia tonight. -- is a super start. This is much

better for Scotland, and this is going to be the key when they do

concede, what the response is going to be like. After nine minutes,

Australia four to the good. But standing far. Gets the off-load

away? No. And look at that. That is absolutely brilliant. Cameron Smith

to Cronk, 8-0! Absolutely superb. That was Melbourne Storm all over.

You think that MacCormack would have asked from his players, nothing

easy. Not given away anything too easily. At the end of the day, gone

set for set. Australia capitalised on the few position. And another

good set. Last play, magic to unlock them. But with too many moves. This,

going to run in another score. Brilliant ball movement. Going under

the sticks, and the kangaroos bouncing. It was a perfect pass, and

a brilliant score. It has been kick off, try, the last few minutes. An

Australia seem to be in the mood to keep that going. 14 minutes. 16

points. And another. Loads of room. It is going to be Cronk again.

Australia tearing Scotland apart. It was Tyson on that occasion. We spoke

about his size. It is just not a contest, physically. And Cronk,

support and wonderful pass. It has been a poor half for Scotland. Not

many positives that I can take from the Scottish state. -- side. Afters

there? This is better. That is more related from Scotland. First

penalty. Shift to the edge. Short side. Absolutely. Do not go through

the teeth. This is the only match in the four Nations this evening,

England New Zealand in the second fixture. Scotland, this is the first

look at the Australian posts... Can they make it count? Lost it? He has.

He was looking pleadingly. But that chance goes to nothing. It was a

better small period for Scotland. Australia, just millimetres away.

More desperate defending for Scotland. Back they come. This time,

well read. But going to have to defend another six. And that is a

lesson for Scotland what to do. It was about composure and this is

going to be difficult for Scotland to defend. That was good bravery. He

was going straight for that post. Drills it low. Brilliant take from

Aitken. Aussie fielder on the boundary! 15 away. Woods, great

stint. He has been strong. It is going to be yet another try. Walk in

for Mansour. And the applause, just appreciation for Australia. We talk

about the repeat set that Scotland had to do. That was brilliant skill

from O'Neill. And as soon as you saw him appear, absolutely spot on,

Mansour. What they would give to get themselves on the scoreboard before

half-time. Absolutely. Almost misses the kick out! Just changes the main

set. 26-4, 26-6. Then you would have something to hang your hat on.

Unfortunately, a few of these Scotland boys looking fatigued. Just

absolutely fatigued. Handled into the contact. Here we go. What a

step. And they have got men on the far side. Mansour diving for the

corner. Australia run in another score. Too easy. And it was Maloney,

and you can see Brooks just getting back possession. One of the best in

the business. Good skill. Mansour, diving finish to the left hand

corner. Just so quick, Australia. Not giving you much space.

Opportunity for an off-load... Just straighten up here... Can they set

something up? Bobbling everywhere! Brierley. On his Scotland debut. It

was always going to come from Brough. And the touchstone coming

from the man who was playing championship Rugby League six months

ago. What a moment. Scotland, ball in hand. And Brough, boot to ball.

Much better than that. Australia able to predict. Play on! Mansour

takes it on. So strong, the backfield for Australia. And that

came from the poor kick from Brough. Ferguson not going to catch them.

Dugan under the posts! Brilliant early scores, the second tower. It

is a great try from Dugan. Looking up, heartbreak, and then shifting

the point of attack. Dugan going through, good food won't to deceive

the full-back. -- footwork. You cannot criticise the lack of hunger

in the Scotland side. But when Australia get the head of steam up

like this... It is difficult. Over halfway. Look at the power! Not

going to be stopped. Yes he will! Just millimetres from the line.

Penalty. He had to do that. That could have been a yellow card. How

strong was Tyson? It is brave defence from Scotland. Good luck

Scotland, defending here against the world champions. That is the first

hurdle overcome... But that is going to make it even more difficult.

Every time they get ball in hand causing all sorts of problems. Lost

it! Now he has not. Scotland interfering. Again. Three in a row.

Maloney... Loose one! Scotland survive. That was poor execution

from Australia, Tierney was quick to get on that, Aitken and Tierney.

That is the difference. That was a break, but he was on his back. Can

they make that crime. Scotland can see the posts! The chance for

Tierney? No! Just too many kangaroo numbers. Going to try to run it. The

power play. Not sure that was the correct option. I am not sure what

he was seeing down the short side, bit of science from Scotland. Brough

going through the middle but could not take advantage. Probably taking

the wrong option. Just giving Australia cheap possession. The

danger pretty much relentless for Scotland. Tired towards the end of

the first half. Legs getting weary towards the final quarter? Going up

against 17 absolute beasts in the kangaroo jerseys. Some good intent

from Scotland. It has been intercepted. Going all the way!

Brough, going to need support. He has found some support. But nothing

there! Great chase from Cronk! Surely some room for Tierney! Hurt!

Just how quick are Australia, getting back. All 13 back behind the

ball enough large. -- in a flash. Just exceptionally quick. We have

seen him finish them so often. And it was Cronk chasing him down. Could

not take advantage, Scotland. And this was the play. Just stepped on

the right foot. Train to leave the defender. He has done something. Not

sure what that was. That stoppage, not going in Scotland's fever. It

is! A try! Kavanagh. Scotland get the second of the evening. And they

deserve it. We see the intercept from Brough, not having the legs to

score, Cronk chased him down, had some composure and kept the ball. He

remember that from one-time Kavanagh..

A bit of niggly! -- niggly. Good shot. They don't want to get too

excited, Scotland. I don't think they are going to win a fight. They

needed to ruffle some feathers. It is getting tasty now. It is getting

spicy! We needed a bit of this from the Scots in the first half. Ruffle

some feathers, disrupt the Aussies. I think it was Frizzell. He has got

away with it here. Hello! He is very fortunate. Tyson Frizell could take

a breather for that. This is how we saw Australia in the

first half. Prepared to go kick for kick. They need to be careful they

don't get carried away. That is the danger. You start to get

comfortable. They do not need a second invitation. Penalty to

Australia. You have to learn your lesson. Scotland didn't learn it

from the first half. They were made to pay in the first half. Will they

be made to pay here? They can see the posts. Australia looking for

only their second score of the half in which Scotland have competed

well. How solid, how watertight is the Scotland defence? He deserves

that! Australia move further clear. Every time Frizzell has had the ball

in his hand, he has caused Scotland all sorts of problems. Danny Brough,

the Scottish captain, when asked about what he hoped from the game,

he said, we will try to get a win, but let's not get embarrassed. They

have done one of the two. Australia absolutely tell them apart. Michael

Morgan adds another four. Scotland needs to be careful. That

combination. Matt Moylan and Maloney. Michael Morgan takes

advantage. The final throws of the opening match of the Four Nations.

Have Australia got one more score? They can eat up that ground so

quickly. Here we go! He will go to the line! Australia bring up the

half-century. Ten tries to two in favour of Australia. Scotland have

not been completely thumped. They have been overpowered and outscored

but they have not been embarrassed. 54-12 firm Ma'u Meninga's Australia.

Extremely happy with the first half. We started well. Controlled the

ball, controlled field position. We made our points. Extremely pleased.

Got away with a good victory. It was a bit messy at times.

I'm pretty sure we can improve. They were excellent. The execution of the

play was good. We challenged them at times. Maybe we should have

challenged them a little bit more. Our effort and determination was

good. Something to build on. It was nice

to get a victory. A few things we need to sort out. Particularly our

tackle to and ball control. -- tackles. A lot of those players have

not played a lot of football in the last couple of months. We expect a

little bit of lack of cohesion. But we expect better ball control. We

got off to a good start. Credit to Scotland, they came back and got a

couple of tries. It was a good finish from the boys. We probably

turned a bit too much ball over, which we can't do in the next couple

of games. Australia can do that to any team. We will get better as the

tournament goes on. We showed a lot of spirit in the second half. We had

a dig and we will get better for next week.

Confirmation of the result. 54-12. Next week we bring you that

double-header, England against Scotland and New Zealand against

Australia. The final is on November the 20th. It takes place at Anfield.

Scotland ranked ninth in the world. His 54-12 A creditable result? Yeah,

I think it probably is. The fourth nation has always found it very

difficult to compete. It has always been tough for them. I suppose that

is the age-old debate about what can be done to get the fourth nation,

whoever it may be, to a better standard? That is a long-term

project. It is. That fourth nation needs to develop that talent. They

get to compete on a higher level with the big three. That then draws

through where they need to get themselves. When they go back home,

they should take the experience from the Four Nations and play at a

higher level. Also, if the Pacific Islands are good enough, they play

for Australia or New Zealand. If they make a law and say, where are

you from? This is who you are going to play for. Those nations are

exceptionally strong in rugby league players. If they can keep them in

their respective countries, that will strengthen the competition. We

talk about Wales, France and Scotland, it is always going to be a

learning curve. They are so far adrift from the other three. They

have to take this and learn from it. The next World Cup in England is

2021. That is a longer term project than the one next year. By 2021,

does there need to be more international rugby league played to

get other countries to a better standard? I think so. I'm really

excited about this tournament. I loved International Rugby Board.

Rugby league needs to put that back on the map. You have got three

fantastic teams. Three teams very close in quality. For me, the rugby

league and the NRL in Australia, this is a priority. It should be a

priority. The French really miss international rugby league. I think

this tournament will go some way to establishing rugby internationally

because the quality, hopefully, will be fantastic. Just on Scotland, I

think it's important to point out that the points Australia scored

were in the opening 15 minutes and the closing 15 minutes. For the

middle 50 minutes, they are actually held their own. That can happen with

those emerging nations. They are playing the world champions, the

perceived number one team in the world, and then fitness takes over

in the final 15 minutes. It is a mixture of NRL, Super League and

championship players. Did you learn anything about Australia from that

game? They are dangerous! We know that. They will be a threat to

England. I thought Scotland did OK. I don't think they were embarrassed.

They will have a shot at England next week. That would be a challenge

in itself. Australia still have some special talent. International rugby

is more about patience. If you watch Australia, if there is nothing on,

they will kick the ball and have a repeat set. They will wait until the

80th minute to win the game. I think that is where England and maybe

Scotland have two score. It is like a game of chess. You have to be

patient. When the operative -- opportunities come at international

level, they have to take them. Let's turn our attention to the game at

Huddersfield. It is a have passed to kick off between England and New

Zealand. England have a new captain. Big Sam is back. I'm Sam Burgess,

the new England captain. Last time I wore this shirt, it was ecstasy.

Followed by the agony. It is New Zealand in the World Cup final!

The boys have done me proud since I have been away.

They got their revenge last year. England's first test series in eight

years. Now it's time for me to make my mark once again.

What a fabulous try! I'm back where I belong.

Jonathan Davies, there will be so many eyes on him this afternoon?

Yeah. Every interview he has done, it reverts back to rugby union. For

me, he is a fantastic player. And a fantastic bloke. He brings a lot to

the camp. Rob has welcomed him back in Australia and in England. He is

fantastic for the game of rugby late. I'm looking forward to seeing

him play. There will be warming up very shortly. -- they will be.

Kevin Sinfield takes us through the England team. We start with the back

three. Jonny Lomax is in ahead of Kevin Latchford. On the wings,

Jermaine McGillvary back on his home ground with the big, strong Ryan

Hall. A formidable record. Sarginson gets the nod ahead of Percival. That

is because of his Grand Final form. Kallum Watkins, arguably the second

best centre in the world. A chance to shine today. Gareth Widdop, the

NFL star, alongside Luke Gale. It is important how these two perform

today. A crucial partnership. The front row props, the ever dependable

Chris Hill and James Graham, the star of many a year for England.

Another star attraction in Josh Hodgson, close to winning an award

in Australia. If he is on form today, he will be fantastic. In the

back row, John Bateman and Elliott Whitehead have had fantastic seasons

in the Super League and NFL. -- NRL respectively. Sam Burgess was

arguably the best player in the world last time he played against

New Zealand. On the bench, the younger twin brothers, Tom Burgess

and George Burgess. The ever dependable Daryl Clark, outstanding

dummy half, expecting to come on at some stage. He will rip the defence

up. Mike Cooper keeps his place. It will have been a close call between

him and Liam Farrell. I think Mike had a great game against France last

week. One of the beauties of doing

international rugby league is you get people are watching it who may

not watch during the season. Let me take Kallum Watkins. You said he

could be the second best centre in the world be hired Greg Inglis. He

is a former team-mate of yours? For those casual fans, what can they

expect from him? Very, very strong. Athletic. Great skill level. His

feet are unbelievable. For a big man he can take defences apart. He can

turn on a sixpence. He can score tries for fun. It would be great to

see is combination with McGillvary today. It will be great to see

Kallum Watkins run at the defence. I'm a big fan of his. He has had a

quiet season with Leeds. If he's going to be a world-class operator,

this is where you have to perform. I hope that he is given that platform.

He has got all the ability in the world. I hope he really does take is

opportunity and shows the sporting world how good he is.

From the England changing room to the New Zealand team.

Robbie Hunter Paul. The back strike weapons, you have the ever save

Jordan Kahu flanked by Jason Nightingale and the try scoring

machine Jordan Rapana. In the centre you have Solomone Kata, very

powerful. As wide as he is tall. He can strike from anywhere. You also

have Shaun Kenny-Dowall, he has been around a long time. He knows how to

play international football. Then we have the spine of the team, Tom

Leuluai, known for his time in Wigan. The pairing with Shawn

Johnson with the New Zealand Warriors in the last couple of years

has been great. The mercurial Shaun Johnson. The heartbreaker of all

England rugby league supporters. In the front row you will start with

the man in the middle leading them around the park, Issac Luke. He has

had a quiet year but he is looking for a big tournament. Jesse Bromwich

will be twinned with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. The on field in

force. In the back of the pack you have Kevin Proctor and Tohu Harris.

They can strike from either side of the field. They will score tries if

given the opportunity. At the back of the field you have Jason

Taumalolo, the number one metre maker in the NRL this year. A tough

player and one to watch. Off the bench you have Lewis Brown, who can

score anywhere at any time. Martin Taupau, an explosive player. Keep an

eye on him. He is one to watch. And we finish off the bench with these

two enforcers. Manu Maroh and Adam Blair. -- Manu Maroh.

Robbie, thank you. Robbie is going down pit side. Wayne Bennett is

already in the stands. He is watching England start their warm up

below us. Earlier this week he coddled with Dave Woods.

Good to see you. How much are you looking forward to this series? I

was relieved keen to come a week ago. Nothing has changed. I am

pleased with the players. I've been working with them. The attitude is

good. One game under the belt against the wells. I was pleased

with that. Defensively they were pretty strong. They made some good

decisions with the football. I left with some confidence about what we

have to do going forward. The England squad, has it been a

learning process? Yes, it has. There are eight in the NRL who are here

with us. There is another 16 from the Super League. I've been

impressed with these guys. One group play in a very competitive

environment. Whereas here, the level of competitiveness among all the

clubs is high. The NRL players can provide the leadership.

You made Sam Burgess the captain. Whether any doubts in your mind? A

little bit. I have a lot of time for James. He has been captain in

Australia. Sammy is the ideal fit. He needs to be challenged more.

James is getting the best of himself every weekend. On Saturday, what are

the thoughts when you sit down and the English national anthem is

played? I was brought with God save the Queen in country. I won't sing

the anthem. It is not my anthem. We were brought with it. That was the

time. I was a young boy in Australia in the 50s. When you are a

professional coach, which I've been for a long time, it is the coaching

that matters most of all. From an England point of view, not

having won a series since 1972, what do you feel it'll do to the health

of the international game if England were to triumph? Firstly, we have to

get some consistency and play our best. I love the way everybody keep

talking about winning the Four Nations. But it's not that easy. I

don't fall into that trap. That is said by people who have probably

never had the responsibility or the expectation that these players have

placed on them. My job is to try to remove that as much as I can. Try to

get them to play to their potential. If they can do that, we have a

chance. If we don't get near that, they can dream as much as they like.

Another year and nothing has happened.

Wayne Bennett makes his debut in the Four Nations as head coach. He

coached last week against France. He has a world-class record. You can

see his record there. He has experience, he has success. Is that

what you need at international level to get international players to buy

into what you are trying to do? He has been here a couple of weeks and

I have been really impressed with what he has done. There are a couple

of things I pick-up from him already. The first is he keeps it

really simple. The players Larrondo no illusions about what he expects.

He makes it very enjoyable during the sessions. The lads have come off

the training field with a big smile on their face. Simple philosophies

but they seem to work. A 42 year coaching career. There is all this

scientific stuff out there that you can tap into. I'm sure he does. Do

you think you may be tapped into it away from the players but in front

of the players he keeps it simple? Yeah, possibly. He alluded to it. He

takes the pressure and expectation away from the players. He is happy

to carry that. He does not give much away. He keeps his cards close to

his chest. It is a big test for England today. A big test for Wayne.

Hopefully we come through it with flying colours. Does a lot of it

sound like common sense? Yes, the only trouble with common sense is it

is not common enough. I do feel as a player you can't remember a lot of

things that coaches tell you. A couple of key points. If you can

simplify the game for these players and then they've got to play outside

of that structure when the opportunity arises, he is doing his

job. For me, the key thing is belief. He knows these Australian

players. He knows the Kiwi players. For me, it is the mixture of the NRL

players and the Super League players. The pace of the game is

quicker and Australia. It is more competitive. They need to really hit

their marks very quickly. And then keep up the pace. Hopefully those

NRL players will have dragged the pace of the training session up.

When I played in Australia took me weeks to get adjusted to the pace

playing with the Australians. For me, playing with pace and tempo and

patience, the calibre of player is good enough in England to win this

competition. In the background the Australian coach Ma'u Malinga --

Ma'u Meninga, talking about Wayne Bennett, said that is problem was

that not that he wanted the England job, but that as a grown man and a

professional he should be able to accept the decision once it has been

made. It does annoy me that he is in the background chipping away trying

to undermine my authority and my position with the Australian Rugby.

There are plenty more quotes. We hope to talk to Meninga at the end

of the game. -- Meninga. I am guessing that Wayne Bennett was not

really care? I don't think you will bother. He said he has not seen it.

I suspect he probably has. It will not be in his focus or his mind

today. He will concentrate on his job. I have to say the Aussies maybe

a little bit worried. I hope the case. I hope he has come out with

this because he is wary of England. Let's get off to a great start.

Let's scare them little bit more. On the flip side, it might be the

motivation that they don't need, the Australians. If you're talking about

Superstars, may be Ma'u Meninga is just above him. I don't like people

bickering in public. Let's hope it is forgotten and we have some great

rugby. For the moment, thank you. Let's

turn our attentions to the players involved and what they are going to

have to do. Robbie Hunter Paul is in the thick of it. I've got to be

careful I don't get run over. When they talk about this England squad,

they talk about size and power. Yes, they do have size and power. They

will start with James Graham. Chris Hill, a very big man. The other

power punchers, the Burgess twins, off the bench. Look at the size of

these guys. False to they are not just size and power. Daryl Clark has

skill and ability. Josh Hodgson, quick. Plays with his head on a

swivel. Then that man in the middle, Sam Burgess, the guy who is going to

lead them from the front. We love him back in rugby league. He will be

looking to do a job in his first test.

We have spoken a lot about the new England captain. He is in the thick

of it with words to his England team-mates. Here are the words he

has been saying to the woods this week.

Sam, welcome back. How does it feel to be back? It's great to be back in

England, especially playing rugby league on home soil. I've always

enjoyed representing my country and even more so in the motherland. It's

nice to be back. New coach in Wayne Bennett. What

have you noticed about him? He has helped open the younger guys in the

squad and given a different viewpoint firmly. He has opened my

eyes too few things. He has brought a sense of belief. Everybody values

him. The last time you were in the England shirt it was the other code,

which did not go as well as you wanted. Have you got something to

prove? Not really. I don't feel I have to prove myself to anybody. It

is the wrong motivation to want to prove someone else wrong. I'm here

to play well with my team-mates. And do my coach and family pride. A big

NRL presents. How important is that from an English point of view? I

think it helps. They play a different brand of football. The

ball is thrown about a lot more. If you can combine the two, it's good.

My brothers and James have added a good deal to the squad.

What a try! Shaun Johnson with literally seconds

to play. Your last appearance in an England rugby league shirt was the

painful memory of the World Cup semifinal. How long did it take to

get that out of your system? I had a lot of mixed emotions that day.

Childhood dream to play at Wembley. One of the greatest test matches I

have been involved in. It was a tough battle for 80 minutes.

Unfortunately, we were on the losing side. Thoroughly disappointed with

that. Really proud of my team. The more I reflect on it, it didn't

really hurt. You have to learn from these things. As long as I have done

that, move forward. What is the dream this time? The dream is to be

the glorious for England and do something in rugby league team has

not done for a long time. To achieve that, you have to go a day at a

time. That is what it is going to take. As

we look at him continue to warm up, and remember that he made his debut

against New Zealand in 2007 here and scored a try, Kevin Sinfield, what

are the differences between Sam Burgess now and then? He is

obviously a bit more experienced. He went to the dark side for a while

and he came back. It is great to have him back. It has taken him a

little bit of time to settle in. It's great to have him back in this

country. He is a personality. He is up their with the best of them. He

great opportunity. One of the best forward lines I have seen from

England in some time. And if the half backs can manage the game

England have got a good chance. One final thing, often sportsmen and

sportswomen Seaport they think we want to hear than what they believe,

but Samberg as -- Samberg as the national Sam Burgess does not feel

as though he has to prove anything? As I said earlier, when he left

after that game, the heartbreaking Dean, on that date was the best in

the world. If you can get back to that, that would be great. We have

spoken what about England. We can focus the attention back to New

Zealand. This is how Robbie thinks they will play. New Zealand will be

desperate to keep hold of this status as number one. It is going to

start with Issac Luke. He will be in charge of moving before us are in

the middle of the park. He will prove himself as a world-class

player, and another man Thomas Leuluai. People know him from Wigan,

and he will be coming back to Wigan at 2017. And with his partner Shaun

Johnson. Going to get the cameraman all the way down. This is one of the

best strike weapons. Shaun Johnson. If anybody has ever seen any of his

YouTube, take a look because he can use both feet, attack the line and

do things that we have never seen another Rugby League player do. This

is what New Zealand can offer and bring. You do not even need to look

at YouTube. We will show you some stuff just now. Practising has

kicking at the moment. And responsible for one of the most

heartbreaking moments when he scored that try at Wembley. Kevin, you were

in the semifinal. But how can you stop him? You have just got to keep

putting numbers around him, it was a heartbreaking moment, terrible to

see that again. Sorry. But she is just pure class. As I am concerned

about the experienced guys around him. Just going to be a big threat.

What you have got to try to do, stand firm, and to try to entice you

and then just skin you. Tries to break the line. But you have got to

pressurise his game. Kicking big four love taking the ball up in the

opposition 20 metres. But in their own area not so keen. Keep an eye on

the full backs. We asked the Kiwi players to describe the squad. Big

features a lot in this! Issac Luke, hooker. Jesse Bromwich, front row.

It is one of the strongest I have been part skilful. Fast. Big. Big.

Big. Shaun Johnson. Good on his feet. Adam Blair. Issac Luke.

Damaging runner. Just have a look at Issac Luke. Jason Taumalolo. I think

he has had an outstanding year. Some quality Football for club. His

enthusiasm energy. Passionate about his football. Passionate about New

Zealand Rugby League. Sam Burgess has come back. Should be physical.

Having a field day! I am a big fan of Josh Hodgson. We will come over

here, do the job and take this seriously. Here to work hard. It is

going to be a quality game. David, a lot of talk about you bringing some

passion back to the squad. How important is that, the culture? Yes.

Remembering the past, the blood and the summit. That is pretty

important, and it gets a lot of focus, the culture as well. We have

had a good week of preparation and learned a lot of things from the

test at Perth. Guys will be better for that under the belt.

You have not had long in the job, what are some of the messages you

are trying to get across? We just want to be defensively nascent

strong in the medal and I think the game is going to be one in the

middle, two big packs, something that is going to be a good spectacle

for the people here and on tv. We have had a lot of focus about Sam

Burgess coming back to Rugby League, captaining, you have got Shaun

Johnson. Yes. Big part of the squad but it is about the 17 out there.

And getting Sam Burgess back, it is great. Good to see him back. But it

is about the 17 for us. Knowing the role, focus. And because of the

competition, how much pressure to win this game? I do not know about

pressure. We just try to walk on the processes, and do what we were doing

before the previous game. Just making sure that we execute today.

have been in that dressing room so many times, how much are you taking

him at this stage? Very little. A lot of conversation still going on

at this stage, but you are in the zone. It is quite nice moment,

before you go out for the kick off. Gladiator. And when New Zealand talk

about passion, is this more passionate than previous New Zealand

squads? They have got it back together, surprised by the lack of

performance against Australia to be to go. But it is hugely important,

part of the internal culture. Ready to go. England and New Zealand. The

And that is a world-class front row. Plenty of talent at the back three.

And Daryl Clark can cause some problems. As far as New Zealand are

concerned, Shaun Johnson and Jesse Bromwich and the back three. Plenty

of muscle and hair! Some fantastic match ups to look forward to. Not

the least, out of the dummy half. A lot of the Australian commentators

have been begging not Josh Hodgson. He has been outstanding. But Issac

Luke, no mean competitor. Could have a massive influence. You can see

that hit the NRL. In overall playing terms, Josh Hodgson has definitely

shaded it. He has been outstanding for Canberra. It is a massive match

up. Physically, two sets of monsters. But massive in terms of

this competition as well. No winners will take a massive step towards the

final. New era for England. Could this competition produce a new

outcome. 1972, the last competition victory, 44 years of staring into

the abyss. It is time that they stopped it from staring back. We are

looking forward to this? We are. I think it is important for England,

you have got to control the game, to try to control the Kiwis. And we

have not really talked about Gareth Widdop, how he starts could

determine the game. That kick has been collected by Jermaine

McGillvary. The local boy, born not far from here, and he plays for the

Huddersfield Giants. That is what England have got. I think it is

controlling the tackling area, whoever gets on the front foot could

control the game. And England having significant influence. Charge.

Decent just inside Kiwi territory. Penalty for England. First important

moment of the game. I would take this, it is important to get in

front on the scoresheet. That is what they are doing. English

referee, how the Kiwis I just do that. All play in the NRL. More than

one referee there. But just one the focus here. That came off James

Graham. Done exceptionally well at the NRL. Hopefully taking advantage

of this to go two up. Interesting, intense conversations going on among

Sam Burgess and Chris Hill. Gareth Widdop, England have some decent

kickers. Banging them over! And would deal, SuperLeague's top

goal-scorer. Just keep taking the two. England lead 2-0, three

minutes. I think that is why will have got the advantage, we have got

the better kicking Dean, we have talked about Shaun Johnson, not

renowned for that. If we can get on the front foot with those, praying

position. -- prime. And here comes James Graham. Clutch of real area

performance, especially in the pack. Made their mark not just playing in

Australia, but with real pedigree. John Bateman to a smack.

England up to the halfway line. Five gone. Nightingale not going to take

the risk. I think they will be exceptionally happy. Two points on

the board, and 50 metres against the dominant Kiwi pack. Just taking the

sting out the game. Lead will be interesting, going to try to slow it

down or just keep things in play. They will be happy with how they

have started. It is a simple structure and Dean, that Wayne

Bennett goes for. Just rolling downfield. And later run, maybe. It

is a penalty for New Zealand. Consistency. That is the thing for

the penalty. And I think the referee probably just stamping his

authority. One for each team. Just letting them know who is in charge.

40 metre mark. And New Zealand, up towards the halfway line. Luke. And

Jason Taumalolo, but they have been

marshalled by Sam Burgess. Johnson going to the right-hand side.

Proctor, going close to the England line. Quick hands from Jesse

Bromwich. It is going to be viewed as a knock on. It was good lane

speed from Sam Burgess. So the opportunity to get at Jesse

Bromwich. Saw that coming. Unfortunate Sam Burgess. Telling New

Zealand the back-to-back set. Dangerous times. It is difficult at

Rugby League to defend. Taken the big centre out there. That

would have been a collector 's item, but instead, another. The other

penalty, differential penalty. Used to be ten a penny. Can't kick for

goal here. Because of the waving of the ref. Johnson, for Taumalolo.

Going within five metres of that England line. England waiting.

Defenders Jesse Bromwich muscling his way closer. Luke, switching

left. Did well there. He was targeting Luke Gale. In his face

quickly. Here comes Luke. Johnson. And then it goes again. Proctor.

England's defence muscling up well. Lasted five, here's six. Johnson,

the measure of his kick... That was a beautiful kick. Rushing up

quickly, they have got Jermaine McGillvary, and that was the

pressure building. Just building pressure against the England side.

Third set to defend. Hang on. Ref having a look. Whether this restart

should be a drop out... It has been confirmed, England drop. It is going

to be another set that England have got to defend. Jesse Bromwich.

Driving in. Actually made his club debut in this country against Leeds.

Hargreaves, lost the ball with the immensity of the Burgess tackle.

Welcome back Sam! Big hit! That has relieved the pressure. Needed that

tackle. Perfect tackle. Right underneath.

England's force laying a path here. Couple of tackles to go. Looking to

finish strongly. The referee says play on. Hall fumbles... England,

Gareth Widdop. It is taken by Jermaine McGillvary. Knocked around

all over the place. And it was a high tackle. The referee was playing

advantage. That was a great kick by widow. A

beautifully judged kick. He nearly got the off-load away. Great

thinking by widow. He knew that was a free play. -- Widdop. Perfectly

executed. Watkins just couldn't take the ball in. Superb play by Gareth

Widdop. Absolutely spot on, the referee. Perfect decision. They are

going for two again. I would as well. It could easily have been

four. Just missed. Jesse Bromwich, the New Zealand captain, has every

right to ask why and where -- wherefore. Referee just explaining

to him. This is Widdop's 20th appearance. He has spent most of his

life in Australia. The kick is a good one. Two out of two. England

lead by 4-0 with 11 minutes gone. England have done exceptionally well

to deal with the physicality of New Zealand. Sam Burgess has led from

the front, as you would expect. They have matched them blow for blow. A

couple of big The headlines:s to relieve the pressure. The lack of

discipline from the Kiwis has given them the start. -- a couple of big

hits. England have some big characters out there. Some of the

lesser experienced players are in decent company.

Burgess to add a little burst. Another penalty. -- Burgess had a

little burst. That comes with the tempo that England are playing at.

They are playing the ball exceptionally quick. The referee has

no option but to give a penalty. Way of sight. A very easy decision. The

third penalty that New Zealand have conceded already. Giving England a

very good position. Five tackles from here. Graham getting through

quite a bit of work early on. They have the Burgess brothers and Mike

Cooper to come off the bench. Bateman is such a terrier. He

punches above his weight. Gale to Lomax. Watkins decided not to pass.

Safety first. A wasted play with one to go.

A desperate act from Widdop. They were all of sight. The outside backs

had overrun because the pass was so poor. I would not be happy with the

last play. They are the fine details of international rugby league. A

poor pass by Watkins. Relieved the pressure for a New Zealand. The

can't afford to do that against a top team. -- you cannot afford to do

it. Lomax with a safe pair of hands.

What a good news story he has been this year. A big absence through

injury. But he has come back with terrific effect for Saint St Helens.

Especially in the latter half of the season. England need to keep their

composure at crucial times. Hodgson will go for the touchline

again. It flicked the boot of Kace. I like the balance of the England

team. They have great width with the ball in hand. They looked like they

have got options. New Zealand are quite prepared to go up the middle.

England look the more dangerous. Hodgson is controlling the tempo of

the game. Also, the variety in the kicking game. There is no pressure

on Nani of the kickers because they have got three kickers. England have

possession back again. They are rushing everything. Their forwards

are not getting yardage. They are going flat. I think they are a

little bit frustrated. They have not been able to go through the middle

of the England side. The physical presence of Burgess and Graham as

well. I think they are a little agitated.

John Bateman will just keep going and going. Wind him up and off he

goes. Widdop with a pastor Burgess. Burgess bursting on. Dealt with on

that occasion by Harris. A forward pass. The touch judge would have

called that. Again, just that little bit of composure. Hill just overran

it. He didn't expect Hodgson did take that step to the right. They

had an opportunity there. Just a couple of high end quality finishes

have not been there. Here come New Zealand. Ta Ma'loula is a massive

man. He is so difficult to stop. Size everywhere you look!

Rapana... New Zealand have made good metres in QuickTime. Kenny-Dowall

was abusing his position. McGillvary caught it and rent it back strong.

Physically New Zealand started to match England. A little bit of

fatigue in the England team. I don't think it will be long before

we see Thomas Burgess and Sam Burgess warming up. -- George

Burgess. A claim of obstruction against Rapana. James Child, the

touch judge, is on. This will be very interesting. He took that ball

with no problem whatsoever. That is a silly play. Rapana changed his

line very quickly. If he runs straight, there is no issue. But he

clearly ran laterally in front of Hall. Stopped him playing the

football. It is a silly penalty. There was no need for it. Whole was

never going to get to him. Again, indiscipline from the Kiwis. England

can put a score on here, a great platform. Bateman will lead by

example in the first instance. Burgess is capable of anything from

they're. A surge, a soft handed pass. Terrific by Jermaine

McGillvary. Brilliant defence as well.

Sam Burgess... A couple of tackles. A lot of wrestling from Harris.

Widdop out wide. He passed to Hall. There was a chance. They are

creating opportunities either side, England. Last ditch defence.

Watkins! Taken safely by Nightingale, who is back in the

field of play. A split-second of an opportunity for Sarginson.

With the possession and the position, the chances will start to

come for England. It's a fairly static start from

Taumalolo. The sixth tackle is next. Johnson with a deeper kick than he

might have wanted. New Zealand are not clicking at this moment. Issac

Luke has started to come out of dummy have a little bit more

regularly. It is only a matter of time before we see some good stuff

from this Kiwi side. England look organised, they look threatening.

They have sadly had the ascendancy in the first 20 minutes. --

certainly. England very quickly establishing

position. A lovely flick from Hill. Hodgson carried it on. Widdop on the

chase. It is great to be a concession of a drop out. England

forced the drop out. England have to defend another set. Clever play.

Let's here from Robbie Hunter Paul. What are you making of this? I am

feeling a little worried. New Zealand struggling. I think it is

down to a couple of things. Chris Hill and Sam Burgess, quick foot --

quick footwork at the line. New Zealand are constantly on the back

foot. A lot of energy being taken out of New Zealand. England probably

a little bit guilty of overplaying a couple of times. Some worrying times

for New Zealand right now. James Graham is labouring hard in

these early stages. Midway through the first half. There was a New

Zealand hand in there. It will be another set of six. Burgess...

Testing the resolve of those Kiwi defenders. The tackle count starts

from here. Bateman... John Bateman is so strong. How many times has he

done that this year for Wigan Warriors? Not quite strong enough to

get over the line. Hodgson stands and weights. Here come England. The

first touch for Tom Burgess since his entry onto the field. A very

solid drive. Gael put it short. -- Gael.

What a pass! James Graham very nearly... Well, he seemed to roll

out the arm. The referee is saying no try on the field. He was in a

spot on position. Let's here from the video referee.

Tackle four, no try. Coming into tackle four. I'm going to need to

see whether his arm touches the ground. He takes possession cleanly.

That is OK. As the ball in the right arm. That is part of the momentum of

the tackle, which is short at that point. Can we get something from

side on? The momentum of the tackle doesn't take over. The arm has

contacted the ground well short of the goal-line. The body never made

it to the goal-line. No try. It is a penalty.

The fans are cheering but they will be disappointed. Double movement.

That was a great opportunity. They shot over the line. The pass beat

the inside defender. I thought he was clear. You have to applaud the

last ditch defence of the Kiwis. They have been absolutely brilliant

at that in the last ten or 15 minutes. The pressure England have

had, you feel they have to get something from it. You have to say,

is there a danger that for all England have dominated, it is only

4-0? Yes, it is definitely a game of inches, Rugby. We have seen a couple

of opportunities missed through lack of execution or misfortune. You feel

that New Zealand, at some point they will explode into action with the

quality they have. I couple of tackles in this set for

New Zealand. Jesse Bromwich tried to put a step on. Here is the last

tackle. Leuluai with a grubber kick. It had to be dealt with. McGillvary

did it. That is the pressure New Zealand are trying to create. A

lovely kick by Leuluai. Perfectly weighted. McGillvary just made sure

it went over. We have not seen too many off-loads so far from New

Zealand. That is where they become dangerous, when they get those

off-loads. Shaun Johnson, Issac Luke... Also, fatigue. 25 minutes

gone. England have given everything in attack. Now it is their turn to

defend. Adam Blair up against his club coach

today. A player with the Brisbane Broncos. Many suggesting his career

was resurrected when he moved to Brisbane under the stewardship of

Wayne Bennett. Cries of forward pass from being and supporters, with some

justification. A couple of tackles remaining. New Zealand, with their

last play in the set, does Johnson roll it into the in-goal area? Yes,

he did. An element of confusion from England's defenders. I think England

may get a little decision. This might have been touched by a New

Zealand hand. Another wonderful kick from Shaun Johnson. As Harris got

his hand to that? -- has Harris got his hand to that? Good spot,

referee. A big call for the England side. Just relieve the pressure. New

Zealand were looking strong then. A sigh of relief from the England

coaches. Everything is coming through

Johnson. Leuluai has not stamped his authority on the match yet. All

three Burgess Brothers on the field at the moment. George being the

latest to join the clan. It is Tom who knocks on. That was a brilliant

hit. Taumalolo, what his hit. That is a brilliant hit. Powerful, isn't

he? Got underneath the ball. Burgess perhaps not opt to speed having come

off the bench. I would not fancy facing him on my own try line. He

had Graham and Burgess and he carried them ten yards.

I think we're going to see some off-loadss pretty quickly from New

Zealand. That is where they are most dangerous. They like to play

off-the-cuff. We have not seen that yet. Martin Taupau is on the field.

He has got a penalty. George Burgess holding him down a little too long,

the referee decided. Some consultation going on. I think Shaun

Johnson will kick for touch. Tohu Harris takes it forward. Issac

Luke has not had a stellar season. He started slowly. Improving as the

year went on. He had an injury towards the back end. We know that

in form he is devastating. He could find form in the Black of New

Zealand. Tom Lawlor has had a great year. -- Taumalolo. Luke has found a

number of England's defenders too keen to put him down. Leuluai lost

the ball. It was an England player who came and infringed. Just a

little bit lethargic from the Kiwis. We have noting that intensity from

them. We know they are dangerous. Issac Luke deciding to go for the

two points. They can't have much confidence in their penalty kicks.

They are building the pressure. They have had three penalties. All in

good areas. I think they are probably trying to find some

fluency. They have not had it with the ball in hand. Trying to get the

team to gel together. Jordan Kahu, another Brisbane player, another in

the New Zealand ranks who has been coached, or is being coached, by

Wayne Bennett. He had his break-out season last year. He has had an

excellent year the season past. 15 tries in 20 games for Brisbane

Broncos. Only his sixth Capita here for New Zealand. -- capped. The

England crowd tried to put him off but he was not going to let that

happen. New Zealand have dragged themselves back into it. New Zealand

will be quite happy with that. Certainly the way the first 30

minutes has gone for England. They have looked dominant. They have not

been able to take advantage. New Zealand will be pretty happy just

two points behind after 30 minutes. That was just too long. A penalty

back for New Zealand on behalf of a line again. Not what England wanted.

We talk a lot about momentum in sport. England, when they had

momentum, did not score the try. Now the two points and they have kicked

straight out. Nightingale was ready and he would have caught that. He

didn't even have to do that. It was too long. This is a big set of six.

An unforced error gives New Zealand and opportunity. We will not stop

stressing today that this is a massive game in the context of the

tournament. New Zealand and Australia next week. England and

Australia the week after. Both these teams have to play Scotland. What

happens today could have a defining element to this Four Nations. Win

today and you have taken a massive strides towards the final. Kata will

slow, just keep it moving. Past the point... Past the point. OK. Roll it

back a couple of frames. I will get you to pose this for me. And England

hand... If an England hand grounds it initially, it will be no try,

goal-line drop out. What about the fingertips of Jonny

Lomax? I have to say, that is brilliant play. For all the world I

thought the Kiwis were in. Brilliant play by Lomax. England survive. But

again they were dominating. New Zealand have worked themselves back

into this. They were never far away on the scoreboard. They were

distinct second best on the field. No New Zealand are getting a little

bit of confidence. When they start to offload, you know they are

growing in confidence. Trying to get a penalty there. It is not go to

happen. They are keeping it alive. Taumalolo

is a dangerous customer. Conflicted awake to Taupau. Still keeping it

alive. The intent was there. The England defender is just about doing

their job. Driven in by the big fellow, Taumalolo. Enough in numbers

to keep them wall of Mac. The door remains shot -- shut. But for how

long? Sarginson put it out of play. Another drop out underneath the

sticks. Just what the kick again. It curls back in play. It is a

brilliant skill, just to hit the ball on the outside of the foot, to

make it bend away. It gives your attacker is an opportunity to slide

in. I thought they picked the wrong side there. Johnson was on the other

side. Gareth Widdop scented New Zealand's away. Leuluai with the

catch. Adam Blair leading the charge back for New Zealand. Just the two

Diving in goes Jordan Rapana. First try, first score for New Zealand at

his second Test match, 6-4 lead! New Zealand have been getting more and

more confident, and it was Leuluai, then the fabulous pass and Jordan

Rapana, sensational. Just watch. He comes across. The number four drawn

in. Beautiful pass. Dummy run was sensational by one of the second

rowers. Eye cannot see who that was. It was Proctor. And it was the speed

of Shaun Johnson. Just accelerated and making the defender commit. And

that is the high-end quality, the ability to deliver at crucial times

as the Kiwis have done here. How do England react to that, after the

domination of the opening 20 minutes? Could not quite convert?

And now finding themselves behind? Nothing in this. Just two point

game, at the most four. Again, to opportunities but just lost the

composure. That is the conversion attempt but he has missed the

target. Just to follow one, I think the important period for England as

we see Johnson, with the execution and the skill... Burgess boys coming

off the bench are just huge men and you want to swing momentum, but it

is sometimes since England have had the ball. Just a little too much

after that tackle was complete. You can see the territory and

possession. Swung now. It was 58, England. That happens with these

Test matches. That is the key. It is not about statistics, it is about

what you do when you have got it. Johnson, tap restart for New

Zealand. Well met by the Burgess clan, Tom

and George! England's defenders getting into his face. Mating deal,

so many spectacular tries from him in these New Zealand colours. --

mating deal. Gets through. Shrugging off the

leap from Jordan Rapana. It was still juggling on. And the touch

judge... England knock on! Chaos. This was crucial. Big set for

England. Half to defend, be solid and aggressive. Just go in two

behind. New Zealand, and Johnson. Less than ten away. Five tackles for

England to survive and New Zealand to have a real go. Having something

to think his next act. Proctor comes in at some speed. England defenders

there in numbers. Enthusiasm, but needing more of that. Johnson,

diving interception! That was taken superbly by weighted. -- Whitehead.

Great line speed. What about that? Really good, just to put himself

between man and ball. England drank to build some amends. It is just

going to dribble out of play. And that puts New Zealand on the back

foot. But just 40 seconds of the half remaining. I am not sure even

if we will see the game restart. I think England got a good set there.

Backs against the wall for six, seven minutes. Opportunity to get

the ball back. You want to finish on your terms. A lot of talking going

on. It is as if England are trying to work out how the patient be

fitting together. -- they should. This is going to be the last play of

the half. New Zealand looking down the blindside. That is at. It is a

lot for grabs at half time. One try. Jordan Rapana. It was a flying

finish. And England have had chances, but have missed several

chances, so at half-time, 4-6. Did you feel your side grew into the

game? I think we started off sluggish. Give away a lot of

penalties but finished well. So little in this. What is going to be

key? Disciplined, if we can do that then it goes a long way to winning

the match. Thank you. We can take a look at the statistics after that

first 40 minutes at Huddersfield. Obviously, New Zealand a couple of

points up. Interestingly, if you go down to those penalties conceded,

after 20 minutes and was 4-2. England had conceded five penalties

at the back-end of that. Kevin and Robbie alongside me. And did England

lose some composure? I notice that but it is certainly still close. It

was split into two. Kiwis grown into it. As the game grew, they seemed to

keep rolling balls and behind, good opportunities. Very smart. You

feared for New Zealand. But from the moment you open your big bush, the

other way! It was the commentator cost. I am a Kiwi. But I have got to

be backing up what Kevin has said. It was a handover. Not capitalising

on the dominance so marching New Zealand up, struggling with the

footwork of Graham of Hill, possibly able to deal with the Burgess twins

because it was more direct. But having to move laterally, not easy.

Before we looked at the main points of that, when you are defending can

you give us an indication of what that does to you physically and

mentally? Physically, lungs bursting out the chest. It is easier to play

with the ball than without it. You are focusing, concentration

stretched. But physically, trying to control breathing. Get some air in!

It is really difficult. At this level, it is about pressure and

positioning. Towards the end of the half, New Zealand started to win

that battle. And I know when you are going to looked at the New Zealand

try, one of the most important parts is the momentum, to scoring this?

That is correct. Kevin touched on that. New Zealand made this a

cracker. Doing it on the right-hand side but also the left-hand side.

Created space out wide. Gareth Widdop has to deal with Proctor,

ends up three on one. Jordan Rapana has been scoring like that all

season long. Athleticism. But it is the Shaun Johnson factor. It makes

some of the players nervous. On the back of two kicks to the goal,

Sarginson not needing to comment but when you're fatigued you can make

those decisions. I thought England defended really well. You think of

the opportunities that we sat, it could have been a different

scoreline. But some smart play Ron Johnson. One opportunity for New

Zealand. And England had chances? Yes. I think this was Gareth Widdop.

It was great vision. He has had a good game so far. Callum just misses

it unfortunately. That could have put us six in front. And another

one. You can see Jonny Lomax. Just looking disjointed. What happens

next? Stray pass. We have gone from having pressure, the stretching New

Zealand, nothing kick. Making the best of that but we should be

getting more. When you are in this situation, looking disjointed, whose

responsibility is it to connect things up again? That was just one

opportunity, we have just seen Sarginson, but that was one play we

looked disjointed. Catch the other. Free play. Got the ball back. We had

to throw that one. Just short. Couple of times that we went to the

video referee. The James Graham one. Explain why this was not given.

James Graham has got the ball, contact with the ground but his

right elbow touches the ground. No try. Extends that untraced to go

over, no try. He sneaks through the gap. And his ilk will takes to the

ground. Turns over. Double movement. It is worth pointing out the quality

of that pass. Skips three defenders. James Graham, world-class passer.

And it changed for England when James Graham and Chris Hill went

off, that is no comment on the Burgess brothers on but shows how

difficult it is to get these interchanges correct? When we talked

about the footwork, James Graham and Hill stretched the defence. When you

are playing direct, it is died. And the introduction of Daryl Clark, I

just thought how dynamic years. I have got to agree with that. When

England were going between the 20 minutes and supplements, New Zealand

starting to struggle with energy, that introduction of Daryl Clark was

just potentially going to create some try scoring opportunities.

England are not far away. We are talking about passes, just

centimetres behind. We can take a look at Jonny Lomax. How impressed

I've been with him so far? And he saved this try? I think the sign of

a good full-back is when you are on your own wine. He has been fantastic

year. Correct position. Saved tries, moving people into position. And

this is world-class. To come up with plays like this wins you matches.

4-6. We have passed up some opportunities but we have defended

well. This is here for us to win. And from the New Zealand point of

view, probably the ten minute stretch when we were comfortable but

as Jesse Bromwich said you have got to keep the discipline. We have had

one of the cameras on Sam Burgess, the new England captain. We will get

the thoughts on Robbie and Kevin on how he did. Following the national

anthem. Everything that Sam Burgess does, it is a battle. He does not

give up. And he has got the tools to do it more exceptionally than other

people. The opening 20 minutes, he was trying to impress. Big squad.

That is why he was appointed captain. That is what Wayne Bennett

ones. That lifts the team. And it also lifts the crowd. You need some

of these big hits to get everybody going. It is a full house at

Huddersfield. It should be bouncing. This is the way that he pleases

Rugby League. We love him and we want to encourage him to do that. I

am not saying that he should be crunching New Zealand players, but

the more that he does that, the more it gets people of seats. I think the

atmosphere is pretty tense. It will have seen the missed opportunities.

Just wondering, is this going to be a rugby today? Take the

opportunities and we will win this Test match. That tension, highlights

just how important this is for both of the sides when they have still

got to play Australia. This, in essence, is not fit for who is going

to meet Australia in the final. Both of these would be does Julia, no

problem. -- sides would beat Australia. We can go down to the

touchline. This man, stood there, was expected to be on a road trip in

America. What is it like to have become part of this team? It has

been a roller-coaster selection. To play four games. And then coming to

the setup like this, just elated and so proud to be involved. After such

a crazy year. I am just so happy and I waited. What has it been like

working under Wayne Bennett? He just brings that steely determination,

the guys know that he wants extra effort, extra training and you need

the resilience to be on this team. I think that we have seen that. I am

delighted to be part of it. I am just trying to learn and grow from

others. As you said, you just had four games from the end of last

year, how difficult has that been? It has been an absolutely crazy

year. The massive build-up to getting back and then you get clean,

I thought every time the off-season sorted. But obviously that decision

to make. Go to America, or come to the camp. And if I went to America

it would have been what if? So I am doing whatever I can to get into the

side. You made the decision to talk about the depression, the

difficulties you have had, what sort of reaction have you had? I have

noticed a lot of people talking about it and a lot of people are

starting to open up. It is not just a silent thing that people go

through. Casually, people just start to talk about this around changing

rooms, Leeds Rhinos, that is the thing we are trying to broach. It is

something that we need to start doing. Fingers crossed you get to

put that jersey on. Good interview. We can point you in the direction of

some stuff coming your way. That is next Saturday. But we can go

back to the second half. We looking forward to that double-header at

Coventry next week. First ever international between England and

Scotland at senior level. But we have got things to sort out there

first. England have got so many good things to look back on. Certainly

with the ball in hand. But finding themselves behind at half-time.

Witnessing Wayne Bennett talking to his players, we can only

second-guess what he has said. What sort of messages do you think? I

think Kevin got that spot on at half-time, defensively doing so well

but we just need to take opportunities. I am just looking

forward to seeing Daryl Clark come off the bench. I think he is going

to abandon plans. -- have a big influence. I remember his debut, two

years ago. Absolutely lightning on the field. It is intercepted. This

man is going to take some stopping. Johnson has got away. Not even going

to get close. Heartbreaker. English heartbreaker. He has just done

something again that has caused England some misery. Enter section

try. What was Wayne Bennett saying? Composure and be clinical. Got the

opportunity, had numbers on the left-hand side but this man read it

perfectly. 75 yards. What a blow for England. You can see that. Had the

ball back. That is the past. Look at the numbers on the left-hand side.

Clear. It was forced. Didn't need to throw it. Away. And if you're going

to be critical, perhaps he should just have carried that a little bit

more, but Lee Johnson the opportunity to sit on his heels. And

when he took that, no other outcome. Four defenders chasing him at

absolutely no chance with his speed. That is a blow. Box office. Absolute

box office. We love to hate him! Just moments of magic, they can be

quiet but you know that he is going to have some Mormons. Big players,

big games. We remember him from that World Cup semifinal but also the

four Nations at Wellington, Man of the Match. Brilliant. Just got it

all. Does that successfully. Significant

moment. Because New Zealand have a little bit of attrition. -- cushion.

Two score lead. As soon as he took that, you love to hate him, when you

coach against them you just know that he is going to have Mormons. He

gives him that eyes, and then off he went. It is some way back in for

England. Ball has been lost! Not stolen.

Penalty for England. They needed that. England needed some position.

Eight down. Have to score twice. Going to have to build some

pressure. Good opportunity. Just what they wanted. Another one. The

England band striking up at the moment. It is very full but flat,

the John Smith's Stadium. You think about some of the kicks. Just

building pressure and we need to see some of that from England. Take some

energy out of the team. Not exactly joining the dots at the

moment. Toppled. Off-loads to big bro Sam.

The final play, next. Very good ball there! Kiwi hand! That is what we're

talking about, the importance of building against the Kiwis, you

cannot underestimate that because you have got to take the energy out

of them. And Josh Hodgson has just done exactly the same. Giving his

team an opportunity to build some pressure.

I think it is going to be interesting to see when he brings

Hill and Graham back on. As Daryl Clark could come on on the back of

that. Need some in the morning for the foregoing -- need some momentum

for going forward. It is a penalty. Penalty. I would definitely take

two. Plenty of time left. Need to score twice. Easy to points. I agree

totally. Going to take the tap. They want the six. George Burgess, a

wrecking machine, as he runs it in. Gareth Widdop trying to create some

space. Whitehead Wade said dummy half. -- waits at dummy half. That

was very slow. Tom Burgess! Whitehead came with pace and power.

The Kiwis matched him physically and put him down. Lomax brings it on.

Not a lot of options for him. Whitehead allowed Wyatt! McGillvary

will score! And Jermaine McGillvary, the hometown boy, is a hometown

hero! Made in Huddersfield, scored in Huddersfield. England are back in

the contest in Huddersfield. It was brilliant play from the whole

England side. Really testing New Zealand. They got some off-loads in

the play. Starting to do to New Zealand what they like to do to you.

When Lomax got the opportunity to get the ball in his hand, he did.

He juggled it slightly, McGillvary. Exactly what England needed. Gale

engages the defence. Whitehead with the decision to make. 32. Perfect

skill. Great try. Nightingale was ball watching. Just went off it.

Great decision not to take the two points! Widdop has got the accuracy.

It is game on again. 12-10. Jermaine McGillvary, the man of the moment.

This is the end product. Gale to Whitehead. Beautiful pass. That

probably came from the repeat set that Hodgson got, killed the

pressure, make New Zealand defender. When they have to defend they do not

look half as good. Jermaine McGillvary's grandmother is here

today. Only the third time she has watched him. He grew open with his

grandmother and used to sleep four in a bed. Imagine sleeping with that

monster! He was given a great upbringing. I'm sure his grandma is

proud as punch, wherever she is inside the ground.

England getting a bit of a roll on. The one thing I have to be critical

of, the passing has not been as crisp as it should be. Some of the

movement, you have to put in front of the play. They are checking their

play and taking the pace out of the movement.

There was a shoulder that came at Kahu from Lomax. It certainly found

its mark. His ribs might be bruised a little. New Zealand have lost

their shape. Gone into their shell. England have got the width in the

attack. Looking dangerous again. That is what we want to see. England

have been dominant in the second half. All New Zealand have had is

one interception. They have to keep on going. Five tackles. The last for

New Zealand. 40 metres away. They rush at Johnson. McGillvary catches

it safely. He wins more penalties than anyone else. He is so difficult

to put down. By the way, there is a World Cup

qualifying game going on at the moment in Monza, of all places.

Half-time, 14-10 for Italy against Wales. Webber wins that is

guaranteed a place in the world Cup next year. Whoever loses, gets a

second chance in the play-off. A clean take from Rapana. He found

some space to clear as well. Superb play from Rapana. Big coal from the

referee. Leuluai is going off. A massive loss for the Kiwis. It looks

like a head injury. I think he got his head on the wrong side. Tommy

Leuluai went down in back play and immediately said it was concussion.

He got up and went back into play. He didn't want to come off. They

brought him off for a concussion check. You get 15 minutes, don't

you? Once he is cleared, he will be able to come back on. He will have

an impact in this game, I'm sure. No surprise that Clark is on the field.

But how surprised you that Hodgson is gone off? It looks like a

like-for-like sales. -- swap. It is a different dynamic with Clark. He

is very direct. He is probably thinking that New Zealand look

slightly tired. Taken on again by Bromwich. He gets

the off-load away. Proctor going no further. They are down an option in

terms of kicker because Leuluai is off the field. Good play by Shaun

Johnson. The ball was right around his ankles and he just scooped it

off the floor. Immaculate skill. Perfect weight. Shaun Johnson is

building in confidence as this game goes on. A couple of interchange is

being made by England. Tom Burgess is going off. Not sure who the other

player going off is. The kick is good.

Sam has had every minute so far. He is taking a breather. We will see

him back. It is unusual that Sam Burgess is on the field and England

are losing. That was never the case in rugby union. There were always

winning when he was on the field. -- they were always winning.

Last play. Lewis Brown... Johnson again. Another kick. McGilvray is

across! A massive hit. I think they will be looking at a possible

shoulder charge. As big as that was, it might have been illegal. It is

very difficult. You do everything you are capable of doing to knock

him over the touchline. He has done terrifically well.

We need to go back a little further. We know he has stepped on the line

before he has passed. We need to make sure that everyone is onside

initially. Definitely no try. We are just looking for the restart. All

play onto this point. Then we need to clear a shoulder charge. Whether

there is a shoulder charge from the England player. Can we have the

front on angle again? I am going to see whether the Army is tucked into

the body contact. No, that is just a collision. Note shoulder charge. No

try. New Zealand have taken the ball into touch.

Everybody has had eyes on the big screen inside the ground. They have

guessed what the decision is going to be. It is no try and note

shoulder charge. Well done McGillvary. Excellent. The

temptation for him was to sing again on Shaun Johnson. He held himself

square and deal with the danger exceptionally well. Did even

remarkably better not to shoulder charge. The temptation was massive.

And a readjustment from the ricochet off the kick as well. He did

remarkably well. Cooper carried it strongly. What a last few years he

has had, Mike Cooper. Back at Warrington next year.

England on the halfway line. Widdop putted high. Gale got knocked over.

They need a little bit more in the last tackle. Put it in between a

winger and full-back, make them move for it. 25 minutes remaining. Two

points in the game. Lots of talking points. There is a good flowed. Here

comes Rapana. Lomax cannot make the tackle. McGillvary cannot either. It

is a second try for Jordan Rapana! New Zealand find a way through

again. And again, England just switch off at crucial times. There

was nothing on there. The defence very well organised. Just watch.

They switch off. Lomax has got to make that tackle. That is a very,

very simple try. What New Zealand have got is absolute raw speed.

Rapana has been sensational. To take that opportunity, accelerate away

from Lomax, who is no slouch, three or four England defenders chasing

him, the speed they have got in this team is probably the difference

between these teams. The danger of the off-load. They have to close the

off-load down. Do not allow him -- don't allow them to get it. When

they do, they are side altogether. Lomax will be disappointed.

Denis Betts sitting to the side of Wayne Bennett. Paul Scofield as

well. Great minds up. -- up there. Jordan Kahu with a chance to give

his side a two score lead again. Six point is the difference. England

have to score twice to get anything out of the game. There is an anxious

bows around the stadium. Full house. The vast majority are England fans.

You can feel the frustration. Here comes Kahu. New Zealand in the box

seat at the moment. He has hit the post and put it wide. And that might

yet prove very, very crucial. Goal kicks will win you games and win new

test matches. We spoke about a game of inches. That was literally

inches. Two inches to the right and it is through the middle. There is

the off-load. Great support. Very good finish by Rapana. Jesse

Bromwich leading out. England with time beginning to take away. 22

minutes, just over, left to play. England needing to score once and

convert to get the draw. Twice to win it. New Zealand very much in the

driving seat as it stands. Lewis Brown has made an impact since

coming on. Such a fantastic utility player. Plays for manly these days.

England get the ball back. That is an important miss kick from New

Zealand. It allows England not to panic. Not to get frustrated. They

are only behind by one score. They have to wait for their opportunity.

They both get one. Then it is down to their execution. Just calm and

composed in this period. Lomax overstepped there. Grabbed the

game by the scruff of the neck now. -- they need to grab the game. Sam

Burgess keeping warm on the bike. England get the penalty. Hanging on

too long. Despite Kevin Proctor's protestations. This is where your

preparation comes in. These type of positions. Just put a planned move

on here. , Lolo and Graham coming

head-to-head. Two big fellows. --, Lolo.

Clark looking for the past. Doesn't want to throw the ball away. Over

the top! Holsclaw is the try! Ryan Hall scores the try. How many times

has he done that for England? -- Hall scores the try. 29 times in his

29th appearance. You cannot stop him from that range. It is about

execution, isn't it? You don't want the ball to go to anybody else in an

England shirt except Ryan Hall. Lovely slick hands. It was Gale who

went wide. Widdop was speculative. What a brilliant finish. Big left

hand reached out. Superb from Hall. The scrambling defence of New

Zealand's desperate to get there. His execution was immaculate.

Superb. Widdop was brilliant. If he catches that, he is nailed. That is

a brilliant finish. He is such a big, big man to try to force of the

touchline. Great finish. He makes it look easy. That is so difficult to

do. There are so many wingers who would not have scored that try. He

leans inside away from the touchline. A big kick. Widdop has

got the weight of Four Nations on his shoulders. And he has kicked it

from the touchline! It is all square. 16 points apiece. We are

going to be testing the edges of our seats because we have got quite a

finish. You said the convergence could be crucial and that was a

conversion he should have put over, Kahu for Australia. -- New Zealand.

The momentum swing goes in your favour. He brings big Sam Burgess

back onto the field, his captain, his leader, and a man who can drive

his team home in the last 20 minutes. I think John Bateman is

off. He has pushed him into the back row. Not a bad replacement in the

back row, Sam Burgess. Ryan Hall has not had the best of seasons at

Leeds. But boy, he can still do it when it matters. There was almost a

sense of inevitability when the ball came to him that he was going to

score. It remains all square. There is still a match to be won or lost

here, with 18 minutes remaining. Sam Burgess... The Kiwis on their

backsidess. -- backsides. Kahu took that well. Great set by England and

a good finish where Kahu had to make the catch. Superb. Daryl Clark is

looking menacing. Rapana is hard. -- hurt. England players straightaway

serious it is by the reaction of the players. Straightaway they hold

their hands up. Is there a problem with Hill and his connection? It is

about not putting pressure to the top of the head. They call it the

crusher tackle in rugby league. Whether that was the case there, I'm

not so sure. I don't think it was intentional. It is very difficult.

He did not have him in a hold. He fell on top. He is OK. That's the

main thing. Kahu with a step. Graham lunges. Broken play. Johnson is at

his most dangerous here. A posse of white shirted England players

waiting to make the tackle. 17 minutes remaining. New Zealand

McGilvray puts it dead. How good is Shaun Johnson? He Times Up on the

focused. You would pay your admission alone just to see that
