Episode 10 The NFL Show

The dust has settled but before we start the show

we're going to have to address some of the news that's been

coming out of America.

He's a brash New Yorker, he says what he wants,

when he wants, and sometimes he just changes his mind.

Yes but he abuses those with opinions that are different

to his and also he is obsessed with computer privacy.

And he once got chased by a rhino.

Yeah, it's time we just accepted that he's here to I suppose.

That's right, welcome to the United States

of Osi or as some people call it, The NFL Show.

On tonight's show, I visit women's England football international

Alex Scott at her cathedral, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

We'll be looking at what quarterbacks do when they see

players like Jay Bell and I bearing down on them ready to eat them up.

We'll have highlights from Thursday night and we'll be looking back

at everything else that happened in a truly outstanding week

of American football.

We've now completed ten weeks of this regular season with only

seven remaining, so it's getting very exciting.

To ratchet up the excitement we have selected both Jason

and Osi's sleeper team, the Kansas City Chiefs,

to get the show going.

Why are they your sleeper team?

They're just not fancy but they find a way to get it done.

The Kansas City Chiefs, though, are holding their own in the most

competitive division in the NFL, the AFC West but actually

holding their own is to cheapen their record.

In their last 20 games they have won 17.

Some describe their style as...

But this is a team with the playoffs firmly in their sights.

The Carolina Panthers are having a torrid time this season,

couldn't be any more different from last year when they won 15

of their 16 regular-season games, were the Super Bowl runners-up,

led by Cam Newton, their outgoing but increasingly frustrated

quarterback.

He just doesn't feel safe out there.

For Cam and co right now, they need to start winning otherwise

for them, it is dink, donk, and out.

Whatever our record is, it's not good, but we have a locker

room full of winners, full of guys who are full of fight

and I know I'm willing to go to battle with those guys

and I can't wait until Thursday.

you blow it up for the start of the game and things don't go

right and it's easy just to...

This crew here have got some character.

Doesn't mean you win every game, but you're going to give yourself

an opportunity to do that.

Well, they've continued to motor on, the Kansas City Chiefs,

given that some people find them a little bit dull.

Is it a good thing for the NFL?

It is a good thing for the NFL if you like good defense

because that's what good defenses do, they make people

fall asleep, obviously!

LAUGHTER Is it also, as you may tell, we have a bigger

prop budget this week!

Is it good for the NFL, the other way, that last year's

Super Bowl runners-up are struggling so much this season?

Highlights what the NFL always trying to do about balancing it up.

Absolutely, man, it's all about the parity in the NFL.

Last year's team that went to the actual Super Bowl is not

looking like a terrible football team, that's the NFL for you.

Over the course of this season you've both had a bit

of a at Cam Newton's expense.

Particularly in recent weeks when he's spoken about not getting

protection but actually you could see it against

Kansas City, he threw interceptions rather than taking a sack.

Yes and especially when he got that pressure right in his face.

That's a mistake you don't think he would make, you don't throw over

the middle when you're having pressure in your face.

He should have known that.

Believe it or not you have to take the sack as a quarterback.

You either throw the ball away, get outside the pocket

and throw the ball away, or you take the sack,

you don't throw the interception, a costly one at that.

That's exactly what he's doing right now.

From both your experiences, is the quarterback more prone

I suppose to what you would call a mental disintegration

than any other position?

Yeah because they constantly trying to figure out what you can't do

and put you in those situations so as a quarterback

and a league quarterback, you have to evolve and adjust.

Absolutely, from a mental standpoint I think the quarterback

is the hardest position to play in sports and so if you don't

have your mental faculty together, you start making mistakes,

it's going to show on the football field.

We can show you another example as well, from the Jacksonville

Jaguars-Houston Texans game, and Blake Bortles who throws

an interception off the heel of a team-mate and he's

a quarterback who's in dreadful form.

Bad luck Blake, man, the problem with him,

everybody expected him to be so much better this year.

He had that pressure and he's not performing.

What is he trying to do there?

Explain to people because it is a great trick but he is evidently

isn't trying to bounce it off the heel of a team-mate.

No, when it rains, it pours, Mark.

What he's trying to do, he sees the defender closing

in on the receiver so he can't throw the ball to the receiver otherwise

he's going to get blown up so he's trying to throw the ball

into the ground and he threw it at his receiver's feet,

who happened to kick the ball back up, interception.

It's just bad luck.

Let's go back to the Chiefs and the Panthers, you are praising

their defense all the time.

Talk me through.

You would have done this several times when you were playing as well.

How you strip a ball, which we will see

Firstly you need great awareness as a defender.

He comes up and instead of trying to take him to the ground,

he goes in for the ball at the same timehe makes contact.

That distracts the receiver and he pulls it out of his hands.

This guy knows how to play football.

Is that recognising that Benjamin isn't holding the ball the right

way, as you've tried to demonstrate with us in the past?

I think he understands how he carries the ball, by film study.

If this guy is running with defenders around him,

I'm going to go for the ball and try and yank it out.

But do you think as regards Kansas City Chiefs, you've just got

to let it go and accept that they are a good team?

Oh, no, they are a good team.

They play football the way it's supposed to be played,

outside of it being flashy or any of that stuff,

they play really well on defense.

They run the football.

I wish they would take more shots down the field so I could wake up

a little bit!

I spent all week writing these scripts!

Here are the other significant results from week ten.

Plenty of really interesting results as well, Houston staying top

of their division by beating Jacksonville.

Philadelphia winning against Atlanta,

a blow to the Falcons.

The Vikings' horrendous run continues.

Beaten by the Washington Redskins.

Really good game between the Seahawks and the Patriots that

we'll talk more about in just a moment.

With the Seahawks winning on the road in New England.

Miami's good form continues by beating the Chargers in San

Diego.

The Tennessee Titans might be one of the underdogs to watch as we go

forward into the second half of the season, they beat

the Green Bay Packers who really are faltering.

Dallas won at Pittsburgh, and the New York Giants beat

the Cincinnati Bengals 21-20.

As things stand, New England and Kansas City are the two

best teams in the AFC.

The other divisional winners will be Houston and Baltimore and it

it stayed like this, they would be in the wild card

weekend, Houston would play Denver and Baltimore would play Oakland.

As far as the NFC are concerned, Dallas and Seattle

are the top two teams.

Very tight elsewhere.

The two wild cards, if the season was to stop today,

would both be in the east, the Giants and the Washington Redskins.

And they would play the other two divisional winners,

Atlanta and Detroit, who have now gone top of the NFC

North thanks to Minnesota's implosion.

Just quickly, a remarkable slate of games, and they delivered.

A great week for football.

The league needed that.

Yeah, the Ravens are back up in the NFL, everything's fine in NFL

land right now.

I want to show you and talk about a couple of great endings

to two of the games and we'll start with the Seahawks and the Patriots

because the Patriots had four drives late on, right on the Seattle

goal line to win it, and as I know you two like to praise

defenses, I'm going to take a step back and you can eulogise

to your heart's content.

This first play, you try and get your star quarterback

and sneak it in there.

The first thing they do, they get up there and they get real physical.

There's something about goal-line stands, they kind of set

the tone for the season.

If you can get away with this and pull it off, you

are a tougher team.

Man, Mark, nothing makes an offense more happy than sticking

the ball down a defense's throat on the 1-yard line.

Conversely, nothing makes a difference more happy

than being able to stop the offense on the 1-yard line.

You only have one yard to go and you can't get in.

Outstanding play by the Seattle Seahawks defense.

How surprisingly is it that the Patriots only went

for the pass on the final, the 4th down there?

Not surprising at all, you see this is a manhood challenge,

they want to see how tough you are.

They are like, OK, we got 1-yard, we're going to pound the ball

down your throat and Seattle just rolls up and stops them, man.

Unbelievable.

OK, we did the Mannequin Challenge a couple of weeks ago,

that's a challenge we aren't doing on the show.

I can guarantee that.

Let's look at another remarkable ending.

The Broncos against the Saints.

I've been trying to tell you, this is what people are doing,

coming up the A-gap and blocking these field goals.

People didn't believe me but you see it.

This is a changer.

This went from zero to 100 real quick.

You are right.

I can't even argue with you any more.

I'm so angry at myself right now.

But it's the white cleats.

I thought it was out but you can't tell with the white shoes.

Everyone is going to have them on.

I know we've spoken about it a lot and done a demonstration

and everything, but it's remarkable how it keeps recurring.

It's so difficult because you can only do it

in the right time of the game

when it is all or nothing.

It's a penalty that could really change the game for you negatively

if you don't get it.

OK well, one of the joys of the NFL is, of course, the access.

Here's a peek behind the curtain to see how they celebrate.

I tell you what, that was an unbelievable football game.

We've been around this game for a long time but I've never seen

anything quite like it.

Damned good job, boys.

We started this season as Super Bowl football team coming back

for year two.

We've had some great moments and we've had some tough moments.

After ten weeks, we're staring it right in the face.

We had a chance to put that thing away early and didn't get

it done offensively,

turned it over.

Defensively, we gave up chunks.

We learn but we win.

That's the main thing, we win.

This week we're going to go back to Football Meets Football.

Osi travelled to the Emirates to meet up with women's England

international Alex Scott.

I'm not going to say that, I'm one of the most experienced.

I've won a lot of trophies but we've got a lot of young players coming

through so my role is different now.

It's about helping them mature and it's about winning as well.

At eight years old I signed for this club.

Eight years old?

For me, it became like a second family.

It's somewhere I could go, I could train, get away.

I grew up in east London.

So, notoriously on council estates, people wouldn't do very

well for themselves.

It gave me a new focus and something to do.

Coming in to training and take it serious.

You spent some time in America also?

Three years in Boston.

I was over there.

Yeah.

Tell me about that experience?

It was amazing.

I loved going to different sports.

That's when I first started following the NFL

and going to games.

I just love the sporting environment.

And I have to say, you do it very well.

Not just the game, it's the whole occasion.

The interaction with fans and I just think it's amazing.

So what team did you support?

I was based in Boston.

So my allegiances are with them.

The Patriots.

No, not another Patriots fan.

I saw the piece you did with the Tottenham players,

so we're level, right?

You're right, I apologise.

We'll just leave it at that.

I've done my research, one of your biggest victories

was against the Patriots.

Two of them.

We beat them down the way you're supposed to.

Do you think you're a better soccer player than me, Alex?

Your best attribute was sacking, being a tackler.

And mine is that I'm very fast, very quick.

So I don't know, we've got different games, right.

I play five-a-side up in Brixton.

Every Sunday.

How's that going?

I'm actually quite horrible to be honest with you.

Who was the best player you played against in your time playing?

Best player, Peyton Manning.

Quarterback for the Colts.

He was the best player.

How about yourself, the best player you played against?

I played against, so far, maybe an American, Abby Wambach.

The goal-scorer, she's so physical, so strong.

And the Brazilian, Marta.

They are two of the best.

This is what I love about women in sport right now, I know

who all these people are.

That's amazing.

It is amazing, it is so important for young girls growing up

now that they have role models to aspire to be like.

My hero was Ian Wright, a legend at Arsenal.

But there was no female where I wanted to be like her.

It's so important that there are female role

models in the game.

On Thursday, two wounded NFC South teams met at the Bank

of America Stadium in Carolina.

As we saw earlier, neither the Panthers nor

the Saints could close out their games last week.

They both sit at the wrong end of their division.

However, neither team need look too far above them.

This division is still there for the taking.

We talked about Cam Newton earlier.

Before we get to the highlights,

let's have a quick word about Drew Brees.

This season, second most passing yards of any quarterback

behind Matt Ryan.

He's a future Hall of Famer.

He's literally changed that organisation since

he's got there.

He can always win a game because he can get the ball

vertical down the field.

But he needs a bit of help from elsewhere.

He does.

The defense has to play well.

Going back to Drew Brees.

A great quarterback, future Hall of Famer.

He is only one of two quarterbacks I actually like.

Because I hate all quarterbacks.

I had a chance to spend some time with him.

As good as he is on the football field, he's a better person.

An outstanding human being.

Wow, that doesn't happen very often.

Drew and Eli Manning, that's it.

Osi has praised a quarterback.

Here's the first game of week 11, the New Orleans Saints

against the Carolina Panthers.

COMMENTATOR: They give it to Ted Ginn.

An inside handoff and Ginn, who has not scored a touchdown

this season until now, gets in for the score.

After reviewing the play, the runner was short of the goal-line.

Oh yeah, they've got to get a win.

That O-line is so banged up, but they've got to get

I think that's what is making them not play well on defense.

They need to get that flavour back.

I seem to get a lot of tweets from Miami Dolphins fans.

A lot of Dolphins fans in this country because what

they did in the 80s with Dan Marino.

They're on a really good run as well, 4-1 in their last five.

Second in the AFC East, they've got to keep that

going if they're going to a wild card.

No question about that.

What they've done is committed to the running game.

Jay Ajayi balling, and the offensive line in particular, playing

outstanding football.

And defensively, Cameron Wake coming back off injury last year,

And I don't think they've had a turnover in their last four wins.

No, and they needed Ryan Tannehill to be good for them last week

and he was.

That is what you need when you're running the ball,

the quarterback needs to make the throws.

Also Eagles at Seahawks will be a good game.

Texans at the Raiders.

Two divisional leaders there.

Finally, the Baltimore Ravens at the Dallas Cowboys.

Who continue to be the most impressive team in the NFC East.

With a great offensive line, as you both tell me,

which allows Ezekiel Elliott to do his thing.

Baltimore have a great defense, they can play and stop the run.

This will be a really good challenge.

The performance of the two rookies, Prescott and Elliott is remarkable.

You can put them in an MVP kind of situation.

Would you?

You've got to, they're both MVPs of their team

and playing outstanding.

They're amazing.

They're what changed that team.

Prescott, I'm so struck by this guy's level of maturity.

To be a rookie, come into the NFL and handle himself the way he does.

Making all the right reads, all the right checks.

This is an outstanding young quarterback.

Do you know what the reaction is to the Cowboys back home?

They are the most showbiz of all the franchises.

The most expensive franchise at $4 billion or something like that.

With that, obviously comes being the most hated,

because of the showbiz element.

How are people reacting to young kids, basically, taking

them to this success?

I think, honestly, it's different.

In years past, the Cowboys have always been hated.

Always.

But this year I don't see that level of vitriol.

as I'm used to seeing.

I think it's because of these two young kids and the way they carry

themselves, and people just root for them.

That's what I think.

It's like they've got a new face, people love the Cowboys,

they've got the star, they want them to win.

But having this new face is really helping them.

he was excellent.

You don't like that from the defense,

Absolutely, it's cheap, you shouldn't be allowed

to do that but you've got to be prepared.

It's creative.

We used to practice against that, that's probably

because Dan Marino did it against my former

team mate Aaron Glenn.

So we were alert.
