Taking off? The green light for Guernsey's airport and sex

offenders' register. Plus, on how the competition? Why

Guernsey is beating Jersey in the battle against the superbugs.

High hopes on Silverback shoulders. Will Badongo have more luck with

the ladies than his predecessor? Some crucial decisions were made

today. Decisions that will help protect children from paedophiles,

will get the airport project moving Sexual offence laws are being

completely transformed. It includes everything from trafficking, child

pornography, prostitution and incest. Some of the Ireland's laws

date from 1909 and a written in French, they will now be updated.

What is going to change? A number of things, but significantly, the

Ireland will have a sex offenders but register. It means police can

track paedophiles living on or visiting the island. I went to find

that Howard Pull would in practice. Sex offenders will have to agree to

treatment, where they can live, who they can associate with. Their

lifestyle will be closely examined. Some of them will be forbidden from

travelling abroad. They expect to have the register in

place in two years. The Home Department still needs funding for

a brave and -- probation officer do manage offenders and run the

database. Sex offenders' details will not be made public but family

members can approach police are concerned about somebody.

Turning to the airport redevelopment. That debate began

yesterday, what happened today? major chunk of today's debate

focused on the plans to move and extend the runway at a cost of

around �80 million. It will bring the airport in line with modern

safety standards. Today, the project received the go-ahead and a

contractor was appointed. Work on site, all being well, we anticipate

commencing this autumn. As I say, it is dependent on getting the

planning permission through in the predicted time frame.

Is this a total green light for the airport project? No, they need the

OK from planners and that will take a few months. The project is

finally moving forward, which is a relief for some politicians, who

were worried the delays could add millions. Anything else on today's

agenda? Yes. The minimum wage. It has been voted to increase the

amount given to low-paid workers by 2.5%, bringing the adult rate of

pay to sit and 15p and the amount for young people to �4.36 an hour.

-- �6.15. New figures reveal that Jersey has

far more cases than in Guernsey of c-difficile, a super bug. Cases

have trouble than just a couple of years. But what is being done to

win this war? Are the first line of defence in

the battle against a hospital bug that just won't go away. This is c-

difficile, a bacteria found in many people's got. It rarely causes

problems, but taking certain antibiotics can disturb the balance

of normal bacteria in the gut, allowing c-difficile to thrive. A

few years ago, 30 people were killed by the bug at his hospital

This was due to one outbreak of a particularly virulent strain of c-

The health authorities in Jersey city have introduced a better

cleaning system as well as a closer monitoring of antibiotics, which

has resulted in nine cases during the first half of this year.

Guernsey Post is partly blaming the shrinking of the local fulfillment

industry for its making a �900,000 a year loss over the last year. The

utility says bulk mail services have suffered more over the last 12

months than at any time in the past 20 years. As a result, Guernsey

Post is exploring what it calls new ways of working, which will mean

voluntary redundancies. There will be an extra public

holiday in Guernsey next year to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee.

The traditional May bank holiday will move to 4th June and there

will be additional holiday on the 5th.

They say animals to the funniest things. Sometimes, they did the

costliest things as well. Jersey fire service spent around �10,000

rescuing animals last year, among others, they held a stranded seal

pup, a dog stuck halfway down a cliff and a cat trapped in a wall.

Rambo the cat, at the scene of his own action story. Last year, this

mischievous muggy got stuck inside his bedroom wall. He did not quite

live up to his name and had to be rescued by firefighters, who cut

this whole to free him. His owner cannot thank them enough. I could

not have done it without them, basically. As you can see, they

just made a small hole in the wall and luckily he was just there and

we got him out. It took five minutes.

Rambo is one of 24 animals and birds are rescued by firefighters

last year. It won't cost �10,000. These range from public rescues,

like this seal pup stranded at daybreak water, to the more trivial,

like seagulls stuck on rooves. have the ability to eliminate risk

for owners and animal handlers taking the situation into their own

hands and getting themselves into serious trouble. Still large animal

can cause serious injuries when it is in distress. We are trained to

deal and have the resources to deal with such situations. The number of

animal rescues and the cost last year is well above average. But

they are paid for by tax payer. While some might question the use

of resources, the fire service and pet owners like Donna say animal

rescues are essential. More Animal Magic coming up in a

town. Staff at Durrell Wildlife Park and ripping he is more popular

with the ladies than his predecessor. The new male

Silverback guerrilla, called Badongo, has gone on display at the

zoo. He is replacingYa Kwanza who has been sent up to a bachelor pad

in France after his disappointing breeding record. Once the newcomer

has passed health checks and cleared quarantine, Badongo will be

introduced to the female apes. We went to meet him.

mate with as many females as possible.

Gorillas are a big deal here. You might remember Jambo, the huge a

who famously stood over and looked over a young boy who fell

unconscious into his enclosure in 1986. Then, along cameYa Kwanza,

the mean faced but warm-hearted soul who has been shipped to France

after only siring two babies in 18 years. Now, the new recruit seems

to be settling in well. He is a very relaxed animal. He shows no

signs of aggression, even during the transport. He behaved really

well throughout the journey. Badongo is currently in quality in

-- quarantine but will be meeting the ladies soon. The females have

been spending a lot of time by the window, they know there is a

gorilla in the building. Let's hope these guerrillas have

some privacy to get acquainted. A well, Badongo has definitely

brought the weather with him. It has been a glorious sunny day today.

Good evening. A lot of fine weather to look forward to over the coming

days. No real chance of rain, we may see some early next week in the

form of brief showers but no certainty on seeing any appreciable

rain for the next five days will stop at the moment, we have an area

of high pressure, beginning to take shape as it moves towards us. This

weather front will introduce more cloud overnight. It will be with us

tomorrow, but a weak feature. Then, the high pressure takes charge. The

South of England and North of France will see a lot of fine

weather. We may have a few showers on Monday and Tuesday but until

then, drive. Overnight, some patchy cloud may float down from the North.

Clear skies initially and temperatures no lower than 14

degrees on a gentle north-westerly wind. Not much change tomorrow. It

may cloud over at times, temperatures climbing to 21 degrees.

Winds from the North, they will swing round to become North

easterly to the end of the day. Later will be fair with good
