Hello and welcome to BBC Channel Islands this Tuesday evening. | :00:05. | :00:09.
Coming up on the programme: Sacrificing sunshine for salaries - | :00:09. | :00:14.
students warned to take jobs while they still can. | :00:14. | :00:17.
Also tonight, a long time coming - could this school finally get its | :00:17. | :00:22.
makeover? And we put the world's poshest | :00:22. | :00:32.
:00:32. | :00:39. | ||
potato to the test. Can La Bonnotte More school leavers and graduates | :00:39. | :00:43.
are out of work this summer because of a lack of jobs. Careers Jersey | :00:43. | :00:53.
:00:53. | :00:55. | ||
says they are facing more competition. They say they should | :00:55. | :00:59.
seek help now rather than take the summer off. Edward Sault reports. | :00:59. | :01:03.
Tuesday afternoon, and Jonny is at work at this coffee shop. He has | :01:03. | :01:06.
just finished his A-levels and is off to university in September. But | :01:06. | :01:09.
unlike some of his peers, he has decided not to take the summer off | :01:09. | :01:15.
and work instead. I think it is good to know what it is like in a | :01:16. | :01:20.
working environment. You need to get as much experience as possible. | :01:20. | :01:23.
It is good to get experience when you do go to university because you | :01:23. | :01:27.
might need a part-time jobs. Jonny is one of the lucky ones. Andy | :01:27. | :01:31.
Gibbs is a career adviser and says students and graduates need to act | :01:31. | :01:37.
now. It is very competitive for young people at the moment. It is | :01:37. | :01:41.
difficult to move into employment for the first time and that is an | :01:41. | :01:44.
area of we are concentrating on. And that is a view shared by | :01:44. | :01:47.
recruitment consultants. Sarah says the work is out there, but you must | :01:47. | :01:53.
have the right attitude. There are places for them, and companies are | :01:53. | :01:58.
obviously willing to help, and it will help them in the future. But | :01:58. | :02:02.
it is all about getting in there. But it is not all bad news. Here at | :02:02. | :02:05.
Waitrose, bosses have taken on students to help them over the | :02:05. | :02:12.
summer months. So far, I think we have 29 students we have taken on | :02:12. | :02:16.
this summer. We have taken on other people over the summer that are not | :02:16. | :02:21.
students, and with that there are probably around 30 students to De - | :02:21. | :02:25.
- who are with us permanently. Around 70 students overall. Whilst | :02:26. | :02:29.
the economy may on the whole be starting to heal, jobs are still | :02:29. | :02:32.
few and far between, but the message for people like Jonny is, | :02:32. | :02:42.
:02:42. | :02:42. | ||
A Jersey building company set up 130 years ago has gone into | :02:42. | :02:46.
voluntary liquidation. Charles le Quesne Limited recently won a | :02:46. | :02:50.
contract to refurbish homes on a Jersey Housing Department estate. | :02:50. | :02:53.
The company had started work on the refurbishment of Clos Gossett in St | :02:53. | :02:58.
Saviour, but work there has been stopped. It has a separate branch | :02:58. | :03:03.
in Guernsey, which is unaffected. One of Jersey's leading hotels has | :03:03. | :03:07.
been sold. Grand Jersey is now owned by a subsidiary of the Royal | :03:07. | :03:10.
Bank of Scotland and is now being managed by BDL, a Glasgow-based | :03:10. | :03:12.
company that also runs InterContinental Hotels and the | :03:12. | :03:18.
Holiday Inn chain in the UK. The company says the 120 staff will be | :03:18. | :03:25.
kept on and it will continue to trade under its name. | :03:25. | :03:27.
Guernsey has, in the past, come within one boat delivery of | :03:27. | :03:30.
completely running out of fuel. That's according to harbourmaster | :03:30. | :03:33.
Captain Peter Gill, who says a deep water berth would provide the | :03:33. | :03:38.
island with greater energy security. The current harbour only allows for | :03:38. | :03:41.
deliveries on certain days due to the tide, and can only accommodate | :03:41. | :03:45.
specific vessels. Captain Gill believes a deep water berth would | :03:45. | :03:48.
allow a wider range of vessels to dock, which would enable fuel | :03:48. | :03:54.
deliveries any day. A 500,000 project to create a new | :03:54. | :03:58.
community centre in Guernsey could get underway by the end of the year. | :03:58. | :04:02.
After years of delay, the official plans for the former Mont Varouf in | :04:02. | :04:06.
St Saviours are now being considered. Penny Elderfield went | :04:06. | :04:11.
to take a look around. There's little left at what was | :04:11. | :04:16.
Mont Varouf school to reflect it's former use. It's been vacant for | :04:16. | :04:20.
years. The classrooms left unused, the building deteriorating. And | :04:21. | :04:24.
it's clear just how much work needs to be done to transform this | :04:24. | :04:29.
building into a new community centre. But after years of delay, | :04:29. | :04:32.
now things are starting to get moving, with the official plans now | :04:32. | :04:42.
:04:42. | :04:42. | ||
awaiting approval. We have not had a centre before, the parish lost | :04:42. | :04:48.
its harm some time ago, and we see it becoming the heart of the parish. | :04:48. | :04:51.
We think it would draw people together. But with hundreds of | :04:51. | :04:54.
thousands of pounds to raise, there's a long way to go yet. And | :04:54. | :04:57.
even with the money, this project wouldn't be possible without the | :04:57. | :05:00.
help of volunteers. Who have already got to work transforming | :05:00. | :05:03.
some of the outside areas. Transforming what was an overgrown | :05:03. | :05:13.
:05:13. | :05:13. | ||
corner into a new sensory garden. We have a group of people, we cut | :05:13. | :05:18.
our way and, and we want to walk her way out, literally hacking | :05:19. | :05:24.
things down to around three feet high. We had to lorry-load school | :05:24. | :05:29.
to a tip on Saturday. Then we had been doing the more refined work, | :05:29. | :05:36.
probably spent over 100 houses here. -- powers. It'll take a lot of hard | :05:36. | :05:39.
work by people like Liz to bring this building back to life. But | :05:39. | :05:42.
they hope it'll be the start of this building becoming the heart of | :05:42. | :05:44.
the parish. Judges for the Britain In Bloom | :05:44. | :05:47.
competition were in Jersey today. Grouville parish was in the | :05:47. | :05:49.
spotlight as the Royal Horticultural Society assessed the | :05:49. | :05:52.
parish's floral displays and community spirit. Grouville is | :05:52. | :05:55.
among 76 national finalists chosen from more than 1000 cities, towns | :05:55. | :06:03.
and villages in Britain. Some sports news for you now, and | :06:03. | :06:05.
Jersey sailor Phil Sharp has finished the first leg of the | :06:05. | :06:09.
Solitaire du Figaro in seventh place out of 47 boats. He completed | :06:09. | :06:13.
the opening stage of the 1700 mile race a quarter of an hour behind | :06:13. | :06:17.
the leader in a time of just over 50 hours. Competing in the Figaro | :06:17. | :06:21.
for the first time, Phil said he was delighted to come in the top | :06:21. | :06:30.
ten. I was happy with it, maybe not the first day, I took a bit of | :06:30. | :06:34.
getting into it, then I was fairly happy with the way I sailed | :06:34. | :06:38.
yesterday and today. Couldn't be happier. | :06:38. | :06:41.
Potato growers in Jersey have begun exporting one of the world's rarest | :06:41. | :06:45.
varieties to the UK. La Bonnotte is usually grown on a French island | :06:45. | :06:48.
off the country's west coast. But they're now produced in Jersey, too. | :06:49. | :06:52.
Today the crop will go on sale for the first time in Tesco shops in | :06:52. | :06:58.
the UK. Anisha Shah has been to see what all the fuss is about. | :06:58. | :07:03.
Move over, Jersey Royals, a new spud's in town. This is the La | :07:03. | :07:06.
Bonnotte being dug up, considered to be the caviar of the potato | :07:06. | :07:09.
world. They're normally grown in France, but these have been | :07:09. | :07:14.
cultivated here on Jersey soil. And they're on sale in the UK today, | :07:14. | :07:21.
where it's expected they'll fetch a high price. It is only harvested | :07:21. | :07:26.
for a very short period. Therefore, because of the reduced tonnage, the | :07:26. | :07:30.
shape of the potato, the characteristics, means it has to be | :07:30. | :07:35.
hand lifted and carefully looked after. It is a small, niche market. | :07:35. | :07:44.
It becomes almost like a celebrity potato. So from this, to this, the | :07:44. | :07:52.
Finnish bag. The question is, how do they taste? Andrew Baird, a chef | :07:52. | :07:55.
at Longueville Manor, boiled our Jersey Royals and La Bonnottes with | :07:55. | :07:59.
a knob of Jersey butter, to be offered out in St Helier. But first, | :07:59. | :08:09.
:08:09. | :08:13. | ||
which did he prefer? Flavoursome. Very unique. But for me, not as | :08:13. | :08:22.
good as love Bonnotte. I prefer love Bonnotte. Which do you prefer? | :08:22. | :08:30.
That one. It is still a potato. Here in Jersey, it seems the good | :08:30. | :08:36.
old fashioned Jersey Royal is still ahead with the locals. | :08:36. | :08:39.
And finally, 100 people in Jersey turned up to watch high tide at St | :08:39. | :08:43.
Aubin's Bay last night. They were hoping to see it wash away some | :08:43. | :08:46.
clever sand sculptures, but as Amy Harris reports, their hopes were | :08:46. | :08:53.
dashed. It's a sandcastle on another level. | :08:53. | :08:56.
This is one of four intricate scultures lovingly created by a man | :08:56. | :09:06.
:09:06. | :09:08. | ||
aptly nicknamed the Sand Wizard. is just practice and dedication. | :09:08. | :09:13.
And you just have to keep trying hard at it. I had the nickname Mr | :09:13. | :09:18.
smooth, because the surface of my sculptures is so smooth. But with a | :09:18. | :09:20.
rising tide, their hours were numbered. Last night, dozens of | :09:20. | :09:30.
:09:30. | :09:36. | ||
people watched and waited for the But they didn't! Just the bottom | :09:36. | :09:42.
bit fell down. I would like to have seen it all down. The whole lot | :09:42. | :09:47.
would not collapse, but I would have expected a little bit more. I | :09:47. | :09:52.
am amazed at how much it stood up to. Although the sculptures are | :09:52. | :09:54.
still standing, with hide tide again tonight, that won't be the | :09:54. | :10:02.
case for much longer. If you are heading down there | :10:02. | :10:06.
deceiving, to see those doctors get washed away, let us see if you will | :10:06. | :10:09.
washed away, let us see if you will get washed away as well. -- those | :10:09. | :10:12.
sculptures. The war is still with us for the | :10:12. | :10:18.
next couple of days but it will cool down. -- warmth. More of a | :10:18. | :10:22.
breeze developing and also some rain coming in, especially for the | :10:22. | :10:27.
estate. At the moment, we will get a few showers this evening, most | :10:27. | :10:32.
the fading away overnight tonight. Another weather system poised to | :10:32. | :10:36.
move in towards the end of the day. Wednesday night into Thursday, | :10:36. | :10:42.
would be with us for a good part of the morning on Thursday morning. | :10:42. | :10:46.
This evening and today, patchy cloud but some clear skies, the | :10:46. | :10:50.
small chance of one or two showers up to the North, temperatures no | :10:50. | :10:55.
lower than 15 degrees. Tomorrow, we should have some decent weather, | :10:55. | :11:01.
all the wood will be rather cloudy to start with. Improving in the | :11:01. | :11:07.
afternoon, 23 or 24 Celsius the highest temperature. Gentle winds | :11:07. | :11:10.
from the west or south-west. Coastal waters forecast is | :11:10. | :11:14.
generally good visibility. Perhaps a little Mr round the coast first | :11:14. | :11:21.
thing. The wind west or south- westerly 3-4. Here are the times of | :11:21. | :11:31.
high water. For our surface, not a great deal of surf, expect more of | :11:31. | :11:36.
that later this week. The forecast all the way through and including | :11:36. | :11:42.
Saturday, it is a mixture. On Thursday, expected to be quite wet. | :11:42. | :11:46.
That band of rain should clear through the afternoon, so perhaps a | :11:46. | :11:51.
little bit brighter it. Mainly dry on Friday with some sunny spells, | :11:52. | :11:57.
with the outside chance of one or two showers. On Saturday, cooler | :11:57. | :12:00.
conditions and some of the showers coming along quite regularly | :12:00. | :12:07.
through the day. Potential for more through the day. Potential for more | :12:07. | :12:13.
showers on Sunday. A 100 pound a Jersey bank note has | :12:13. | :12:17.
been the least to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It will feature a | :12:17. | :12:24. |
