Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up... | :00:08. | :00:14.
The biggest drugs raid of the year, as Jersey customs break up a UK | :00:14. | :00:20.
smuggling ring worth millions. How to deal with disruptive | :00:20. | :00:24.
students - Guernsey States goes back to school. | :00:24. | :00:28.
I am at Jersey airport as it celebrates its 75th birthday. We | :00:28. | :00:38.
:00:38. | :00:41. | ||
are looking behind the scenes and speaking to people who work here. | :00:41. | :00:46.
It is the biggest drugs arrest Jersey customs has made this year. | :00:46. | :00:50.
This week, two men were arrested in the island following an | :00:50. | :00:54.
investigation into suspected drug trafficking. It was co-ordinated | :00:54. | :00:58.
with police officers in Staffordshire. Three people were | :00:58. | :01:03.
also arrested in Burton-on-Trent. 31-year-old Lee and Norris from St | :01:03. | :01:07.
Saviour and 22-year-old Benjamin Bishop from Northallerton have been | :01:07. | :01:17.
charged with possession. -- lien Norris. The two men were arrested | :01:17. | :01:23.
after customs officers seized class B drugs and a large amount of cash. | :01:23. | :01:28.
Jersey received small amounts of cannabis resin and large amounts of | :01:28. | :01:32.
cash, tens of thousands of pounds worth. We will be looking at the | :01:32. | :01:38.
money trails. The raid was a combined operation | :01:38. | :01:42.
with police officers in a Staffordshire. Cannabis with a | :01:42. | :01:46.
street value of 1 million was seized in Burton-on-Trent. Three | :01:46. | :01:51.
people have been arrested there book released on bail. -- but | :01:51. | :01:57.
released. We are happy that we have disrupted | :01:57. | :02:04.
and may be completely stopped and organised drug syndicate that was | :02:04. | :02:09.
trafficking into Jersey on a large scale. We are very pleased to work | :02:09. | :02:15.
in partnership with other agencies and we will do that wherever | :02:15. | :02:20.
possible. This is the largest drug arrest in | :02:20. | :02:23.
Jersey so far this year. Both men arrested have been remanded in | :02:23. | :02:33.
custody until 5th April, when they will appear in the Royal Court. | :02:33. | :02:36.
Tackling disruptive behaviour in the classroom and reducing the | :02:36. | :02:40.
number of exclusions in Guernsey schools was one of the issues | :02:40. | :02:44.
dominating a debate in the States today. Deputies agreed on an action | :02:44. | :02:52.
plan for tackling the problem. Studying hard. The scene you would | :02:52. | :02:56.
expect to see in classrooms around Guernsey. But sometimes disruptive | :02:56. | :03:01.
pupils can cause problems and that is a problem common to a lot of the | :03:01. | :03:04.
island's schools, but one that apparently could be dealt with in a | :03:04. | :03:09.
better way. As we look more deeply into what we realise how immense | :03:09. | :03:13.
the problems were. There needs to be much more support for teachers | :03:13. | :03:18.
and schools because you only need one disruptive person in the class | :03:18. | :03:22.
for it to be very difficult for the class to deal with. Today the | :03:22. | :03:26.
States approved a range of recommendations to help pave the | :03:26. | :03:29.
way for the Education Department to improve the situation. More support | :03:30. | :03:34.
was top of the list for some former teachers turned politicians who | :03:34. | :03:39.
feel that exclusion need to be the last resort. It is a slippery slope | :03:39. | :03:43.
that you want to avoid. The best way forward is to exclude children | :03:43. | :03:49.
from the classroom if they are disruptive but not from school, | :03:49. | :03:53.
provide additional support and slowly deal with their needs and | :03:54. | :03:58.
get them back on track. It is something the Education Department | :03:58. | :04:03.
says is key to tackle early on so a review of the primary sector could | :04:03. | :04:09.
hold important answers. We must start addressing these issues | :04:09. | :04:14.
increase school. We all have our report at the end of this month but | :04:14. | :04:19.
we have to keep going forward with this. Whoever is in charge, I hope | :04:19. | :04:24.
they will pick this and deliver it. The election will mean changes in | :04:24. | :04:28.
the States but those committed to improving the island's schools will | :04:28. | :04:35.
be hoping it does not delay the urgent changes which need to be | :04:35. | :04:37.
made. A 47-year-old man from the UK has | :04:37. | :04:42.
been jailed for three years for a spate of break-ins in Jersey. Carl | :04:42. | :04:47.
Murphy was found guilty of three counts of burglary, one of breaking | :04:47. | :04:56.
and entering and a drugs charge. Motorcyclists are being told to | :04:56. | :05:02.
keep off Guernsey's cliff paths. Cyclists are also reminded that | :05:02. | :05:06.
they are breaking the law if they ride on south coast cliff paths. | :05:06. | :05:11.
Fewer than 4 % of people in Jersey use the bus to get to work | :05:11. | :05:15.
according to the latest census results. Figures show that more | :05:15. | :05:20.
than half of working adults use a private car and one quarter walk. 4 | :05:20. | :05:23.
% cycle. Guernsey Police says that when you | :05:23. | :05:28.
are armoured Land-Rover is essential. More than 100 people | :05:28. | :05:33.
have left comments on BBC Guernsey's Facebook page, most of | :05:33. | :05:36.
them critical of the decision to purchase the vehicle, which cost | :05:36. | :05:40.
just over 180,000. Guernsey Police that if Chris McManus and Franco | :05:41. | :05:45.

A Jersey environmentalist has questioned why Jersey can't match | :06:04. | :06:09.
UK tournaments to renewable power. At Wadebridge has introduced wind- | :06:09. | :06:18.
power and solar power is. -- solar panels. Mark slipped -- mark lives | :06:18. | :06:22.
in St Ouen and has taken steps to make his home more environmentally | :06:22. | :06:27.
friendly. There are a couple of boreholes | :06:27. | :06:36.
over there. That comes into the system here. There are two pipes, | :06:36. | :06:44.
one going in and one coming out. That takes the water into the house. | :06:44. | :06:49.
He feels we should be following in Wadebridge's footsteps to generate | :06:49. | :06:53.
our own electricity. We could go a lot further in the longer term | :06:53. | :07:03.
:07:03. | :07:03. | ||
because we have rain options. Wave energy is a possibility as well. We | :07:03. | :07:08.
have other restrictions, a limited amount of land to use. But | :07:08. | :07:12.
companies in Jersey are already tried to do things like this. | :07:12. | :07:17.
Jersey able to rival the Cornish town and produce its own | :07:17. | :07:25.
electricity island wired to? -- island wide. Mark hopes that one | :07:25. | :07:29.
day, with the help of the States, weekend you -- make more use of | :07:29. | :07:36.

Flying Christine. They will take part in the Queen's diamond jubilee | :07:58. | :08:01.
flotilla. The new chief executive of the | :08:01. | :08:04.
Jersey Football Association has been named as David Brookland. He | :08:04. | :08:11.
has been a board member for six years, mainly as treasurer. He | :08:11. | :08:15.
takes over from Paul Creeden en made when he leaves to take on a | :08:15. | :08:22.
role at Wembley with the English FA. It is our gateway to the outside | :08:22. | :08:26.
world and today Jersey Airport celebrates its 75th birthday. It is | :08:26. | :08:30.
used by thousands every day and staffed by hundreds of people, each | :08:30. | :08:40.
:08:40. | :08:45. | ||
with a different story to tell. Edward Sault spend a day there. | :08:45. | :08:50.
It was that building behind me that was opened on 10th March 1937 and | :08:51. | :08:55.
everything has changed somewhat, as you may expect, since then, as I | :08:55. | :09:00.
have been finding out. This was how you used to get | :09:00. | :09:04.
through -- to and from Jersey, landing and taking off from the | :09:04. | :09:08.
beach at West Park but it was decided a proper aerodrome was | :09:08. | :09:13.
needed and on 10th March 1937 Jersey Airport was born and opened | :09:13. | :09:19.
by the then bailiff. The planes that operated off the | :09:19. | :09:24.
beach were small, with eight seats. The weight category would have been | :09:24. | :09:29.
three or four times. But flying here stopped during the war years | :09:29. | :09:33.
as German troops took over the airport. Nigel Vibert is a keen | :09:33. | :09:38.
aviation enthusiast. He has volumes of photos of the airport and | :09:38. | :09:42.
aeroplanes taken over the years. lived down the road and so in the | :09:42. | :09:47.
Sixties I started coming on a bike, regardless of whether. My father | :09:47. | :09:53.
walked for British European airports for a time, so whether | :09:53. | :10:00.
that started it off I don't know. After liberation, a positive future | :10:00. | :10:06.
beckoned. In its heyday, hundreds and hundreds of holidaymakers -- | :10:06. | :10:12.
honeymoon has from the UK came to the island's. | :10:12. | :10:16.
To any has worked at the airport for 40 years, first with the | :10:16. | :10:24.
airline British Midland and now on the information desk. -- Jenny has. | :10:24. | :10:30.

and man losing his wedding ring down the aircraft loo. -- and man. | :10:36. | :10:42.
Things that you can have a smile about afterwards. Sid Watling says | :10:42. | :10:48.
that things have changed over the years. In my eyes, a great deal, | :10:48. | :10:53.
because all of the rules and regulations, health and safety, | :10:53. | :10:56.
obviously they had to come in, but we had a lot more freedom in those | :10:56. | :11:02.
days. Doug Bannister is the new man in charge. He says that Jersey | :11:02. | :11:08.
Airport can build on its past. the next seven decades I think we | :11:08. | :11:12.
will see the airport continue to serve the community. We would like | :11:12. | :11:17.
to open up and expand our product offerings and make it a much more | :11:17. | :11:20.
important community. It will be business as usual this weekend, | :11:20. | :11:25.
with flights landing and taking off to various destinations, but what | :11:25. | :11:29.
is clear is that it is a valued resource and one that we would be | :11:29. | :11:35.
lost without. Happy birthday, Jersey Airport. You | :11:35. | :11:45.
