drama the festival was invented for. Good evening. The two local Channel | :00:10. | :00:12.
Islands airlines, Aurigny and Blue Islands, begin their new codeshare | :00:13. | :00:16.
system tomorrow. The two`year deal will see both airlines selling their | :00:17. | :00:19.
own tickets, but all passengers travelling on the same Blue Islands | :00:20. | :00:25.
ATR aircraft. The move has led to possible strike action over working | :00:26. | :00:28.
conditions for some ground staff. Here's Jen Smith. | :00:29. | :00:32.
For years, Blue Islands and Aurigny have competed against each other on | :00:33. | :00:35.
the Jersey`Guernsey route, but now they've agreed it'll be better to | :00:36. | :00:38.
work together to cut costs. Blue Islands' planes will be used, but | :00:39. | :00:41.
Aurigny will also sell tickets for the flights under what's called a | :00:42. | :00:46.
"codeshare". The deal means fewer flights but bigger planes. | :00:47. | :00:50.
But as competition on the route is removed, how do passengers know | :00:51. | :00:55.
they'll be no price hikes? There won't be any price collusion. We | :00:56. | :01:02.
have our cost of operation and, you know, we will try to sell all other | :01:03. | :01:07.
seats and maximise our total revenue and we will achieve that with a | :01:08. | :01:11.
blend of cheaper fares and higher price fears and the message is as | :01:12. | :01:15.
ever, book early and get a better deal. | :01:16. | :01:17.
The deal hasn't been without problems. Baggage handlers in Jersey | :01:18. | :01:26.
have recently threatened strike action after seeing their hours cut | :01:27. | :01:29.
when Blue Islands moved to using Aurigny's workers. Today, the Blue | :01:30. | :01:32.
Islands boss said that's not up to him. That is something you will need | :01:33. | :01:35.
to ask the other company. We are focused on our own ideas. | :01:36. | :01:39.
The union Unite told the BBC today it's in new talks with its members | :01:40. | :01:43.
after hearing back from Servisair ` the company which employs the | :01:44. | :01:45.
baggage handlers. Both airlines are keen to stress the new codeshare | :01:46. | :01:48.
won't cause disruption for passengers. But neither could | :01:49. | :01:56.
guarantee flight prices won't rise. Meanwhile, after over 40 years of | :01:57. | :01:59.
service, the last scheduled Trislander aeroplane will fly | :02:00. | :02:01.
between Guernsey and Jersey tomorrow. Edward Sault has been to | :02:02. | :02:05.
meet former pilots marking the end of an era. | :02:06. | :02:10.
The sight, the sound, the history: If you live in the Channel islands, | :02:11. | :02:13.
you'll recognise these aeroplanes. They were first used by Aurigny in | :02:14. | :02:17.
1971, but tomorrow that era comes to an end. Today, some of the pilots | :02:18. | :02:21.
that worked day in, day out on these aeroplanes gathered together to | :02:22. | :02:24.
reminisce about times gone by. You fell in love with them, certainly I | :02:25. | :02:26.
did. It was so solidly built, typically British. Ingenious design. | :02:27. | :02:34.
It has been part of building up the Channel Islands into what they are | :02:35. | :02:41.
today. It was like flying a small aircraft but it was an airline. It | :02:42. | :02:44.
could do things that some of the bigger airlines could not. | :02:45. | :02:47.
This was St Ouen's beach in Jersey in 1998 when a Trislander, on its | :02:48. | :02:51.
way to Guernsey, was forced to make an emergency landing much to the | :02:52. | :02:54.
amazement to those on the ground. The man at the controls that day was | :02:55. | :02:58.
Chris Winch. He says the aeroplane was very trustworthy. Sometimes we | :02:59. | :03:06.
would land and not even realise that one of the tyres had burst. The | :03:07. | :03:10.
passengers sitting looking out of the window could yet and they would | :03:11. | :03:13.
tap me on the shoulder and tell me, " did you realise that higher as | :03:14. | :03:19.
both? " The last Trislander will fly between Guernsey and Jersey tomorrow | :03:20. | :03:23.
and as it takes off, so does over four decades of local aviation | :03:24. | :03:28.
history. The flights will continue until they | :03:29. | :03:33.
can find a replacement. This site will become less familiar as well | :03:34. | :03:41.
that all too familiar sound. And you can hear more from Edward's | :03:42. | :03:44.
interviews with the former Trislander pilots on BBC Radio | :03:45. | :03:47.
Guernsey and BBC Radio Jersey in the morning. | :03:48. | :03:49.
For the first time ever, Jersey is looking to Guernsey to help swell | :03:50. | :03:53.
its ranks in the Army Reserve ` formerly known as the Territorial | :03:54. | :03:56.
Army. Mike Wilkins reports on why Jersey's squadron is recruiting on | :03:57. | :03:59.
new territory. The Channel Islands have a long | :04:00. | :04:03.
tradition of serving in the British Armed Forces. The Jersey Field | :04:04. | :04:06.
Squadron is the local Army Reserve Unit in the Channel Islands. And for | :04:07. | :04:09.
the first time, it's been recruiting here, in Guernsey, this week. It's | :04:10. | :04:12.
mainly because the unit's undermanned, but it also sees | :04:13. | :04:19.
Guernsey as an untapped resource. Yes, this is not about the Jersey | :04:20. | :04:24.
Field Squadron, this is about the Army Reserve recruiting and the | :04:25. | :04:29.
Channel Islands. The Field Squadron as the local Army Reserve Unit and | :04:30. | :04:33.
the Channel Islands. Young men and women, we are asking them to join | :04:34. | :04:36.
the local Army Reserve. None of the potential soldiers of | :04:37. | :04:40.
tomorrow wanted to talk on camera today, they were far more interested | :04:41. | :04:43.
in getting their little hands on the weapons, including rifles and | :04:44. | :04:48.
grenade launchers. So how would a Guernseyman take to serving in a | :04:49. | :04:51.
Jersey unit? Well, there are already some who told me the old enemy isn't | :04:52. | :05:00.
all that bad. June what, I have been accepted really well and to the | :05:01. | :05:06.
Jersey Field Squadron. The rivalry that some people think exists, it | :05:07. | :05:10.
does not happen in Jersey. They are in great bunch of guys and we are | :05:11. | :05:13.
gelling well as a team. So, as the Army Reserve looks for | :05:14. | :05:17.
more recruits, men and women from Jersey and Guernsey could soon be | :05:18. | :05:20.
serving together. The head of the Channel Islands' | :05:21. | :05:22.
competition regulator is stepping down after two years in the role. | :05:23. | :05:26.
Andrew Riseley will be replaced on first April by Michael Byrne until a | :05:27. | :05:29.
permanent chief executive is chosen. Mr Riseley says he wants to relocate | :05:30. | :05:34.
closer to his home in Australia. Fog has severely affected travel in | :05:35. | :05:37.
the Channel Islands for the second day running. Flights were again | :05:38. | :05:40.
delayed and cancelled at Jersey and Guernsey airports because of the | :05:41. | :05:43.
weather. It follows a day of disruption yesterday. There's a | :05:44. | :05:46.
backlog of passengers waiting to get in and out of the island, and Jersey | :05:47. | :05:50.
Airport says delays could continue into the weekend. | :05:51. | :05:57.
And there'll be travel updates on BBC Radio Jersey and BBC Radio | :05:58. | :06:00.
Guernsey from 6am tomorrow. But that's it from me ` have a good | :06:01. | :06:04.
weekend and I'll leave you with David Braine and our weekend | :06:05. | :06:06.
weather. Good night. After the still air and the poor | :06:07. | :06:21.
visibility over the past couple of days, there is some good news as we | :06:22. | :06:26.
head into the weekend. More degrees and that has already happened and | :06:27. | :06:28.
that will continue overnight tonight. We may see some mist | :06:29. | :06:35.
patches in one of two places but it should remain mainly fine and dry. | :06:36. | :06:41.
The low cloud has lifted a little bit this evening and that will | :06:42. | :06:45.
continue. I cannot rule out the possibility of one or two mist | :06:46. | :06:49.
patches but they should disappear by and large. After a cloudy start | :06:50. | :06:54.
tomorrow, it will improve with sunny spells in the afternoon but there | :06:55. | :06:58.
will be some brisk winds developing as well. Temperatures getting up to | :06:59. | :07:02.
11 or 12 degrees. For the second half of the weekend, it is equally | :07:03. | :07:07.
as good. Sunday should have some fine weather around and it may be | :07:08. | :07:11.
cooler temperatures around 11 or 12 degrees. Monday is cloudy again. It | :07:12. | :07:17.
will be thick and stubborn to move out of the way. On Tuesday we have | :07:18. | :07:21.
quite a breezy day with westerly winds and son `` some Sunny spells | :07:22. | :07:28.
with temperatures back to what they should be for this time of year. | :07:29. | :07:29.
Good night. | :07:30. | :07:32. |
