Good evening. BBC News at Six so it's goodbye | :00:00. | :00:12.
Good evening. No more competition between Aurigny | :00:13. | :00:14.
and Blue Islands, but questions remain about strike action and price | :00:15. | :00:16.
rises. Joining forces: Why Jersey's Army | :00:17. | :00:19.
Reserves are recruiting in Guernsey for the first time. | :00:20. | :00:23.
Plus ` why playing dress ups is keeping children out of hospital. | :00:24. | :00:34.
And after all of the visibility problems of the last couple of days, | :00:35. | :00:38.
this weekend that Mr will clear and hopefully we will get some sunshine. | :00:39. | :00:48.
Two airlines which compete on the Jersey and Guernsey route start | :00:49. | :00:53.
sharing an aircraft this weekend. Blue Islands and Aurigny will | :00:54. | :00:56.
"codeshare", which means they sell places on the same passenger plane. | :00:57. | :01:01.
The move has led to possible strike action over working conditions for | :01:02. | :01:05.
ground staff. Jen Smith reports. For years, Blue Islands and Aurigny | :01:06. | :01:08.
have competed against each other on the Jersey`Guernsey route, but now | :01:09. | :01:11.
they've agreed it'll be better to work together to cut costs. Blue | :01:12. | :01:16.
Islands' planes will be used, but Aurigny will also sell tickets for | :01:17. | :01:19.
the flights under what's called a "codeshare". The deal means fewer | :01:20. | :01:24.
flights but bigger planes. But as competition on the route is removed, | :01:25. | :01:27.
how do passengers know they'll be no price hikes? | :01:28. | :01:33.
There won't be any price collusion. We have our cost of operation and we | :01:34. | :01:43.
will try and sell of `` all of our seats and we achieve that with a | :01:44. | :01:46.
blend of cheap fears and higher`priced theirs. It will lead | :01:47. | :01:49.
to a better deal. The deal hasn't been without | :01:50. | :01:54.
problems. Baggage handlers in Jersey have recently threatened strike | :01:55. | :01:57.
action after seeing their hours cut when Blue Islands moved to using | :01:58. | :02:00.
Aurigny's workers. Today, the Blue Islands boss said that's not up to | :02:01. | :02:06.
him. That is something you will need to ask Servisair. We are looking at | :02:07. | :02:11.
our own company. That is a question for those guys. | :02:12. | :02:14.
The union Unite told the BBC today it's in new talks with its members | :02:15. | :02:18.
after hearing back from Servisair ` the company which employs the | :02:19. | :02:20.
baggage handlers. Both airlines are keen to stress the new codeshare | :02:21. | :02:23.
won't cause disruption for passengers. But neither could | :02:24. | :02:31.
guarantee flights prices won't rise. Meanwhile, it also means the end of | :02:32. | :02:35.
an era for Channel Islands Aviation after over 40 years. The last | :02:36. | :02:38.
scheduled Trislander aeroplane will fly between Guernsey and Jersey | :02:39. | :02:42.
tomorrow ` fog permitting. Edward Sault has been to meet some of those | :02:43. | :02:45.
who spent their careers working on the iconic island aircraft. If you | :02:46. | :02:55.
live in the Channel Islands you will recognise these evil planes. Today | :02:56. | :02:59.
some of the pilots who worked on them gathered in Jersey to reminisce | :03:00. | :03:07.
about times gone by. This plane was so solidly built and typically | :03:08. | :03:13.
British. It was an ingenious design. It has been part of building the | :03:14. | :03:16.
Channel Islands into what they are today. It was like flying a small | :03:17. | :03:25.
aircraft but it was an airline. It could do things that some of the | :03:26. | :03:29.
bigger airlines could not do. This was St Ouen's beach in Jersey | :03:30. | :03:33.
in 1998 when a Trislander, on its way to Guernsey, was forced to make | :03:34. | :03:37.
an emergency landing much to the amazement to those on the ground. | :03:38. | :03:41.
The man at the controls that day was Chris Winch. He says the aeroplane | :03:42. | :03:46.
was very trustworthy. Some things it would land and you would not even | :03:47. | :03:50.
realise one of the tyres had burst. The passengers could not visit and | :03:51. | :03:55.
they would tell us, do you know that higher has burst. Whilst it may be | :03:56. | :04:02.
the end of a neighbour for flights between Jersey and Guernsey | :04:03. | :04:04.
tomorrow, it is not the end of the story. The flights will continue for | :04:05. | :04:09.
the foreseeable future until a replacement can be found. This site | :04:10. | :04:14.
will be less familiar in the skies of the islands as well as that all | :04:15. | :04:30.
too familiar sound. For the first time ever, Jersey is | :04:31. | :04:33.
looking to Guernsey to help swell its ranks in the Army Reserve. It | :04:34. | :04:37.
used to be known as the Territorial Army, now the Jersey Field Squadron | :04:38. | :04:40.
is recruiting on new territory, as Mike Wilkins reports. | :04:41. | :04:43.
The Channel Islands have a long tradition of serving in the British | :04:44. | :04:46.
Armed Forces. The Jersey Field Squadron is the local Army Reserve | :04:47. | :04:49.
Unit in the Channel Islands. And for the first time, it's been recruiting | :04:50. | :04:53.
here, in Guernsey, this week. It's mainly because the unit's | :04:54. | :04:55.
undermanned, but it also sees Guernsey as an untapped resource. | :04:56. | :04:58.
Yes, that is not about the Jersey Field Squadron. It is the Army | :04:59. | :05:00.
recruiting and the Channel Islands. The Field Squadron as the local | :05:01. | :05:03.
reserve unit and the Channel Islands. We are telling young men | :05:04. | :05:09.
and women to join the Army Reserve if they live here. | :05:10. | :05:12.
None of the potential soldiers of tomorrow wanted to talk on camera | :05:13. | :05:15.
today, they were far more interested in getting their little hands on the | :05:16. | :05:18.
weapons, including rifles and grenade launchers. So how would a | :05:19. | :05:22.
Guernseyman take to serving in a Jersey unit? Well, there are already | :05:23. | :05:26.
some who told me the old enemy isn't all that bad. I have been accepted | :05:27. | :05:36.
well into the Jersey Field Squadron. The arrival some people believe | :05:37. | :05:40.
exists does not happen in Jersey. They are a great bunch of guys and | :05:41. | :05:44.
everyone So, as the Army Reserve looks for more recruits, men and | :05:45. | :05:47.
women from Jersey and Guernsey could soon be serving together. | :05:48. | :05:53.
Seems to gel as a team. The head of the Channel Islands' | :05:54. | :05:56.
competition regulator is stepping down after two years in the role. | :05:57. | :05:59.
Andrew Riseley will be replaced on first April by Michael Byrne until a | :06:00. | :06:02.
permanent chief executive is chosen. Mr Riseley says he wants to relocate | :06:03. | :06:08.
closer to his home in Australia. Next ` could this be the answer to | :06:09. | :06:12.
keeping your child safe around dogs? After a special campaign in schools | :06:13. | :06:16.
to teach children how to behave around the animals, the number of | :06:17. | :06:19.
youngsters turning up at Jersey Hospital's Emergency Department with | :06:20. | :06:22.
dog bites has fallen. From a four`year average of 21 admissions, | :06:23. | :06:26.
just eight were seen last year. Louise Walter reports. Can anyone | :06:27. | :06:40.
think about anyway that a dog may You don't have to be Doctor Dolittle | :06:41. | :06:43.
to understand animals ` at least that's the message of this lesson | :06:44. | :06:47.
teaching children how to read dogs' body language and then how to | :06:48. | :06:48.
respond. Try to speak to us? | :06:49. | :06:55.
And it involves a little role play from this Year one class ` an age | :06:56. | :07:02.
crucial to target. We know from is this the sticks and research that | :07:03. | :07:07.
children regularly mess the signals that dogs give off. The seagulls | :07:08. | :07:11.
baring their teeth and they think they are smiling. It seems an | :07:12. | :07:15.
obvious campaign to roll out to them at this stage to keep the children | :07:16. | :07:32.
say. Not to hold them. Lessons that should be remembered at | :07:33. | :07:35.
home, not just when meeting new dogs. That is according to animal | :07:36. | :07:39.
behaviour used Rosie Barclay. Animal behaviourist Rosie Barclay | :07:40. | :07:42.
says the majority of dog bites come from family pets where children | :07:43. | :07:45.
might be naturally cautious of a strange dog. A lot of it is down to | :07:46. | :07:53.
fear. Because children cannot read the signals they do not understand. | :07:54. | :07:58.
We forced the dogs into having to bite us. It's hoped these lessons | :07:59. | :08:03.
will help create a dog`savvy generation of children in the | :08:04. | :08:07.
island. Jersey's rugby club has transformed | :08:08. | :08:10.
due to the success of its first team and that's encouraged more and more | :08:11. | :08:14.
boys to take up the sport from as young as ten. And for one or two | :08:15. | :08:18.
from each age group, success at the Hampshire County trials is the first | :08:19. | :08:21.
step to following their heroes to professional level. So how much | :08:22. | :08:24.
training, support and money does it take to become an elite rugby | :08:25. | :08:27.
player? Emma Chambers has been finding out. | :08:28. | :08:33.
Even in dense fog they train. Hours on the pitch, pushing to become the | :08:34. | :08:37.
best player they can be. And it's paying off. Will ` seen here wearing | :08:38. | :08:41.
the blue scrum cap ` has beaten hundreds to be selected in the | :08:42. | :08:45.
Hampshire County squad. Nearly every weekend he goes over and trains with | :08:46. | :08:50.
them, but at just 15 years old, and studying for his GCSEs, how does he | :08:51. | :08:58.
manage it? A lot of late nights, to be honest, that is most of it. Just | :08:59. | :09:02.
rugby and straight home, two hours of homework and then go to sleep. | :09:03. | :09:08.
Every day as a standard. Is it worth it? Yes, definitely. | :09:09. | :09:12.
Will wouldn't be able to pursue his dream without the support of his | :09:13. | :09:15.
school and his family. His dad has spent about ?1000 on travel costs. | :09:16. | :09:21.
Every weekend, every time they go to train and play, it means one is of | :09:22. | :09:26.
the parents accompanies the boys to go across, so logistically it is not | :09:27. | :09:34.
easy. The club are very supportive. Especially financially but it does | :09:35. | :09:37.
not cover the whole cost of the weekend when we are away. | :09:38. | :09:39.
The club provides some sponsorship to enable academy players the | :09:40. | :09:42.
opportunity of playing with and against UK teams. On flights alone | :09:43. | :09:53.
we spend around ?212,000. The parents contribute quite a lot to | :09:54. | :09:57.
that as well. It is a huge amount of money. | :09:58. | :09:59.
With more high`level training on the horizon for Will, his path to a | :10:00. | :10:02.
professional career could become a lot more clear. Some really ghostly | :10:03. | :10:13.
scenes there, wasn't there? Foe is affected travel and the Channel | :10:14. | :10:16.
Islands for the second day running. Flights were again delayed and | :10:17. | :10:18.
cancelled at Jersey and Guernsey Airports because of the weather. It | :10:19. | :10:21.
follows a day of disruption yesterday. There's a backlog of | :10:22. | :10:25.
passengers waiting to get in and out of the island, and Jersey Airport | :10:26. | :10:28.
says delays could continue into the weekend. Time for the weather | :10:29. | :10:30.
update. You are quite correct. That Ford has | :10:31. | :10:48.
lifted quite a bit. That process will continue overnight tonight. We | :10:49. | :10:53.
will not have too many problems with mist and fog over the weekend but | :10:54. | :10:58.
there could be that bad `` backlog continuing. The weather is much | :10:59. | :11:01.
better, there is much better visibility. Some brief Mr tomorrow | :11:02. | :11:06.
morning but nothing as bad as what we have seen recently. All courtesy | :11:07. | :11:11.
of this area of high pressure. That will move around a little bit over | :11:12. | :11:14.
the next couple of days but it will dominate the weather over the | :11:15. | :11:18.
weekend. It has not changed much by the middle of the day on Sunday | :11:19. | :11:23.
either. North West winds which are strong enough to prevent too much | :11:24. | :11:28.
missed or fog developing and also allowing some sunshine every now and | :11:29. | :11:33.
again. There will be some missed tonight, however. The winds are from | :11:34. | :11:37.
the North`Westerly direction and that will bring down the daytime | :11:38. | :11:42.
temperatures. Night`time temperatures around seven or eight | :11:43. | :11:47.
Celsius. Remember, the sea temperature is only about nine or 10 | :11:48. | :11:50.
degrees. The sun will return tomorrow afternoon with a top | :11:51. | :11:57.
temperature of 12 or 13 degrees. That is the forecast for the coastal | :11:58. | :12:01.
waters, the winds are North`Westerly. Times of high | :12:02. | :12:07.
water: Pretty good for Sunday, not a lot of | :12:08. | :12:29.
change in that pattern. We will continue with fine weather. More | :12:30. | :12:33.
cloud next week and it turns more settled for the middle of next week | :12:34. | :12:37.
but until then it is fine and dry with sunshine for the weekend. Here | :12:38. | :12:45.
are some pictures of when the circus came to town today to Jersey. | :12:46. | :12:51.
Shoppers in St Helier were treated to a glance of the show and they | :12:52. | :12:55.
were clowning around at the precinct. Goodbye. | :12:56. | :13:06.
Exeter Chiefs and an economic boost for the area. | :13:07. | :13:09.
Plus: An MBE for the historian who's spent 30 years delving into Devon's | :13:10. | :13:13.
past. And a happy ending to the tale of | :13:14. | :13:22.
the puppies adopted by a new mum. Time for the sport now and it'll be | :13:23. | :13:26.
all eyes on Sandy Park this weekend as the Exeter Chiefs get ready for | :13:27. | :13:29.
the biggest game in their history. Andy Birkett has been there today to | :13:30. | :13:38.
soak up the pre`match atmosphere. Here I am at Sandy Park. The Chiefs | :13:39. | :13:47.
are hosting and starring in their first`ever major final. Exeter have | :13:48. | :13:52.
been building towards this day for a while and although the scoreboard | :13:53. | :13:55.
may have the team 's starting equal, home advantage could give | :13:56. | :14:01.
them the edge. The skipper will lead the team out and it will be a packed | :14:02. | :14:06.
house. These opportunities don't come along too often. There has also | :14:07. | :14:14.
been a period of achievement in recent years yet nothing to show | :14:15. | :14:19.
from that in terms of silverware. This opportunity doesn't come often. | :14:20. | :14:25.
We are excited. They go into the match full of confidence. Really | :14:26. | :14:33.
looking forward to this spectacle and enjoying the atmosphere and the | :14:34. | :14:38.
occasion and hopefully, we will get what we want out of the game. The | :14:39. | :14:45.
opposition have only beaten Northampton once. We know how good | :14:46. | :14:50.
they are and they have international across`the`board. When the teams met | :14:51. | :14:58.
last month, it was the leaders who snatched a late win. We don't have | :14:59. | :15:04.
any worries about beating Northampton. With the final | :15:05. | :15:13.
preparations underway, the message is clear: Go out and enjoy your day | :15:14. | :15:20.
in the sun. I am joined now by a former Exeter Chiefs. You have seen | :15:21. | :15:25.
both sides of it. How big an event is this? Massive. You look all the | :15:26. | :15:32.
premiership clubs which are in the mix. International final hosted on | :15:33. | :15:38.
our home ground. Sold out on the first half of Monday morning. Where | :15:39. | :15:45.
is your money at the weekend? Obviously, on the Chiefs, but | :15:46. | :15:50.
looking at it, we play Bath in the semifinal, we beat them, we are at | :15:51. | :15:56.
home, Northampton beat us by less than appoint a month ago. We will | :15:57. | :16:04.
find out on Sunday. The Chiefs rise is not just good news for the | :16:05. | :16:10.
country, it is good news for rugby fans as a whole. This final and the | :16:11. | :16:16.
Rugby World Cup next year should provide local businesses with a | :16:17. | :16:21.
massive boost. Rugby is becoming big business in | :16:22. | :16:26.
Exeter. These posts promote next year's World Cup and many firms are | :16:27. | :16:30.
following in the successful slipstream. This pub is little more | :16:31. | :16:36.
than a drop kick from Sandy Park. Its bedrooms are booked for matched | :16:37. | :16:40.
is well in advance and for this weekend, it has had to turn away 100 | :16:41. | :16:47.
potential bookings. We are busy throughout the year and especially | :16:48. | :16:51.
rugby matches, but this weekend, we have got a waiting list for tables. | :16:52. | :17:00.
Reservations are high. This is a crucial delivery: 5000 pints of | :17:01. | :17:04.
Devon brewed beer have been brought in for Sunday's final. They will | :17:05. | :17:17.
taste it here. They will say, what a great day they had out in Exeter. | :17:18. | :17:24.
Fantastic beer. All part of the experience. It raises the profile. | :17:25. | :17:31.
No one is sure how much money is brought into the local economy by | :17:32. | :17:35.
the Rugby club here but conservative estimates reckon it can be | :17:36. | :17:48.
?15`20,000,000. It all brings business into the city. We have got | :17:49. | :17:55.
the science park out there. We are looking at the world, not just the | :17:56. | :17:59.
UK, and the more we can for Exeter on the map, the better it is for | :18:00. | :18:03.
business. Work on improving the ground will pause on Sunday as the | :18:04. | :18:08.
Chiefs hope to match success of the field with success on it. | :18:09. | :18:12.
Looking at this weekend's football and in the Championship, Yeovil Town | :18:13. | :18:15.
will have their work cut out at promotion`chasing QPR as they look | :18:16. | :18:19.
to climb out of the bottom three. In League Two, Plymouth Argyle's recent | :18:20. | :18:22.
form has seen them shoot up the table but they face a tough trip to | :18:23. | :18:26.
second`placed Scunthorpe. At the other end of the table, Torquay | :18:27. | :18:30.
United head to Cheltenham, buoyed by their midweek win over Rochdale, but | :18:31. | :18:33.
still seven points from safety. Exeter City's slump in form has seen | :18:34. | :18:38.
them slip into the relegation mix. They meet Newport on Sunday. | :18:39. | :18:43.
And finally, the first round of the British Motocross Championship is | :18:44. | :18:46.
taking place in Cornwall this Sunday. The best riders from all | :18:47. | :18:49.
over Europe will be taking part at the MotoPark in Landrake. | :18:50. | :19:02.
Well done to the Plymouth diver down. Good luck to Tom Daley who | :19:03. | :19:11.
gets his campaign underway on Sunday. | :19:12. | :19:15.
A historian from Devon has today received an MBE for his lifelong | :19:16. | :19:26.
passion for the county's past. Though American by birth, Doctor | :19:27. | :19:29.
Todd Gray, as he's usually known, has spent the last 30 years bringing | :19:30. | :19:33.
history to life in the South West. He was awarded his medal by Prince | :19:34. | :19:37.
Charles at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace this morning. Before the | :19:38. | :19:41.
ceremony, John Henderson went to meet Dr Grey to find out why he's | :19:42. | :19:50.
devoted to Devon's history. This hardly needs any explaining. A | :19:51. | :19:56.
little bit of history repeating because 160 years ago, the same | :19:57. | :20:01.
thing happened. If you are a Victorian historian, you know the | :20:02. | :20:11.
1850s collapse. They didn't have their health and safety concerns we | :20:12. | :20:19.
do. Everybody got out, walked around the train track and off they went. | :20:20. | :20:29.
We have got wonderful images of that time but seldom is there anything | :20:30. | :20:34.
new in history. If anyone knows anything about Devon's history, it | :20:35. | :20:39.
is Doctor Gray. Since arriving from the States, he has written 45 books | :20:40. | :20:46.
on the county. From fascism and early vegetarianism to the carvings | :20:47. | :20:51.
on church benches, he has been inspired by Devon's diverse | :20:52. | :20:55.
typography and its seam of documents and archives. You end up with a | :20:56. | :21:02.
history which is so different from Somerset or Yorkshire or Berks and | :21:03. | :21:08.
although I love Cornwall, Devon has a diversity which I think is | :21:09. | :21:15.
extraordinary. It also helps that the past can still make its presence | :21:16. | :21:22.
felt. The war memorial is a particular favourite. For figures | :21:23. | :21:33.
standing on top of the Demon of war. It reminds me of how important that | :21:34. | :21:39.
war was to people and at the time, they said this huge darkness fell | :21:40. | :21:44.
across England and we want to leave something behind suit you know what | :21:45. | :21:48.
we went through and you know it shouldn't happen again. He has given | :21:49. | :21:54.
3000 lectures on history but now, he is making it by receiving an MBE for | :21:55. | :21:59.
his voluntary services to Devon Heritage. There are probably 1000 | :22:00. | :22:07.
Devon historians. Everyone is working quietly away. This is nice, | :22:08. | :22:19.
the Devon history is recognised. And now for a sad story with a happy | :22:20. | :22:23.
ending. A litter of orphan puppies have been saved by a surrogate | :22:24. | :22:27.
mother who lost her own litter just a week earlier. What makes this | :22:28. | :22:31.
story so remarkable is that the surrogate mum is a Hungarian Vizla, | :22:32. | :22:34.
just like the orphan puppies, and they live only 20 miles apart. | :22:35. | :22:47.
The new mum for the pups and new pups for the ma'am. Clara had been | :22:48. | :22:54.
expecting five puppies of her own but tragically, they all died. It | :22:55. | :23:01.
was unable `` it was an awful experience to go through. We were | :23:02. | :23:11.
relieved that we still had Clara, though. She has been searching the | :23:12. | :23:22.
house. She was looking for the puppies. I had her upstairs in bed | :23:23. | :23:31.
with me that night and she spent the entire night crying. A week later, | :23:32. | :23:38.
and 20 miles away, another Sizzler was giving birth but the mother died | :23:39. | :23:44.
and six of her ten pups also died. Did she have any milk for the | :23:45. | :23:49.
survivors? Yes, she did. It was a perfect ending. It has been | :23:50. | :23:57.
fantastic for Clara. It's like she has got her babies back. It has been | :23:58. | :24:04.
fantastic for the puppies. We don't know whether they would have | :24:05. | :24:09.
survived without her. It seems, in life, some things are just meant to | :24:10. | :24:19.
be. They are gorgeous! My heart has | :24:20. | :24:20.
melted. We lose all this mist and fog we | :24:21. | :24:42.
have been getting used to over the last few days and we gain a bit more | :24:43. | :24:48.
of a breeze and better visibility, both out at sea and inland. It is | :24:49. | :24:55.
less misty, brighter and more of a breeze. That is not to say we might | :24:56. | :25:02.
see a few mist patches overnight, but already, the cloud base is | :25:03. | :25:06.
coming up in the main problem will be hill fog. There is still a big | :25:07. | :25:10.
area of high pressure on our doorstep which doesn't move very far | :25:11. | :25:14.
away from us. By the middle of the day tomorrow, it is pretty much in | :25:15. | :25:20.
the same position. It will dominate the weather through this weekend. By | :25:21. | :25:25.
the middle of the day on Sunday, hardly any change. We do have | :25:26. | :25:30.
north`west winds which will feed in a fair amount of cloud but the dryer | :25:31. | :25:36.
story continues through Saturday and Sunday. Already, some of the low | :25:37. | :25:43.
cloud has lifted and clear spots, but very quickly, the cloud will | :25:44. | :25:49.
fill in the gaps. Winds are north`westerly. They will be | :25:50. | :25:53.
moderate overnight tonight. Overnight temperatures no lower than | :25:54. | :26:00.
six or seven. For tomorrow, after a cloudy start, the sunshine will | :26:01. | :26:04.
break through that cloud and particularly in the afternoon, | :26:05. | :26:10.
lengthy spells of sunshine to enjoy. Along the north coast, low cloud | :26:11. | :26:14.
still, so here not quite so fine, but for the rest of us, in that | :26:15. | :26:20.
sunshine, it will feel pleasant with 14 or 15 Celsius the top | :26:21. | :26:24.
temperature. On the coast, the sea temperatures will be nine degrees. | :26:25. | :26:31.
For the Isles of Scilly, bright and dry but cloudy. Much better | :26:32. | :26:48.
visibility in general. For our servers, bigger waves then we have | :26:49. | :26:55.
seen. The sea has been all winter, really. Tomorrow, more for our | :26:56. | :27:09.
servers. Still quite chilly. Better visibility. The sea state will be | :27:10. | :27:19.
moderate. Still dry story next week. On Sunday, more cloud than we | :27:20. | :27:27.
like. Brief lyrics `` breaks in that cloud. A big change from Wednesday | :27:28. | :27:32.
onwards. It becomes more unsettled, so make the best of the next four | :27:33. | :27:36.
days. | :27:37. | :27:42. |
