Good evening. Jersey's diving so-called

community says it is in shock after community says it is in shock after

an experienced diver died on Saturday. She was described as an

acid to the island. `` asset. Friends describe Jillian Smith as

born to be in the water. She'd been part of the island's diving

community for years and was well respected for her experience and

enthusiasm. Many people told the BBC today told of her passion for the

sport. But not only did she love the water, she also cared for the

environment. Kevin worked with her at Jersey Sea Search, a voluntary

marine conservation group. I will remember her as a person who just

loved to dive. She was so enthusiastic about getting in the

water, always smiling when she came out of the water. She obviously

loved it and I can understand why. The 41`year`old mother of one was

diving here on Saturday afternoon with two others when she became

separated from the group. She was quickly found in shallow water and

brought to the surface where fellow divers tried to revive her. But

despite best efforts, Jillian was pronounced dead at the scene by a

passing doctor. Jersey Police isn't treating her death as suspicious,

but has a duty to investigate what happened. Obviously, we need to look

at the circumstances leading up to the dive itself and the equipment

used. And the medical investigation. We are in the early

stages of the investigation and maintaining an open mind. Tonight,

members of the diving community here in the island say they are in shock,

and are "clueless" as to how this could have happened to such an

experienced diver. They say Jillian will be greatly missed ` the lovely

person who always smiled. The demolition of the arrivals and

baggage hall at Jersey Airport has been approved. Known as the 9077

building, it is on the list of Sites of Special Interest, but Jersey

Airport's management argued it affected both its safety and

operational capability. Heritage campaigners had wanted to preserve

the building. A woman appeared in Guernsey's

Magistrates' Court today accused of stabbing her former partner with a

knife. The incident happened at a property in Mill Street on Saturday

Night. Sheena`Anne Rive faces charges of unlawfully wounding with

intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The 32`year`old was remanded

in custody for seven days. The final bill for repairing the sea

walls from the winter storms could reach ?800,000. That's on top of the

one million spent every year on routine maintenance of Jersey's sea

defences. Meanwhile, officials from Transport and Technical Services say

rising sea levels and more frequent storms may force them to raise the

height of the sea walls. A scrutiny panel today heard the current walls

are working well, but they're studying data to see if they need to

be higher in the coming decades. Guernsey's failing to provide enough

appropriate housing for Islanders. That's according to the Chief

Officer of Housing. It follows the release of new figures showing that

the number of new homes built last year falls well below government

targets. Building new homes for the future,

but the latest government figures show that not enough are being

constructed. 171 new homes were built last year, when the target the

States set is to create 300 a year. More than half of those new builds

are classed as affordable housing. Most of the new builds were in St

Peter Port and the north of the island. So where should future homes

be built? Well, there are brown field sites that some feel should be

turned over to housing, whilst others feel the rural parishes may

have to shoulder more of the burden. We are eagerly waiting for the new

plan, which will be coming out in the next 12 to 15 months. I am sure

the planners will be addressing that. Certainly some of the parishes

need to take the burden of new housing and I am hopeful that they

will be in local centres, and they will be able to take some of the

housing stock acquired on the island. Space is a premium in

Guernsey and not all sites can easily be developed. We are waiting

on the new development plan to allocate more land for housing

development. At the moment, it is quite restricted, the number of

sites that can be built on. We are looking for flexibility so that more

homes can be provided. It's a fine line to tread ` build too few houses

and people continue to struggle to buy a home, but build too many too

quickly and the market could become flooded.

The first outdoor Jersey royals were dug today. This first crop will go

to local supermarkets. Royals planted later will be lifted in a

few weeks to be exported to the lucrative UK market. And after one

of the wettest winters in recent history, growers say they're

confident of a good season. Really it was the beginning of February was

particularly bad and that has impacted on the planting programme.

But it has been very mild. This time last year we were in the depths of

winter and there was still snow, so evidence is that it is growing well.

I am feeling positive and upbeat. Bomb disposal experts were called in

to carry out controlled explosions on mines found at Long Beach in

Grouville Bay. The nine anti`tank Teller mines date from world war

two. They were found by an Islander out metal`detecting with his

friends. Normally you find one or two, but

nine in one whole is quite a lot. It looks like they were ditched at the

end of the liberation when they were clearing up. Maybe therefore got to

pick them up. They have been sitting there for the last 70 odd years.
