There is more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel. We are back | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Good evening. A couple are lucky to with the | :00:00. | :00:10.
Good evening. A couple are lucky to be alive today after their new boat | :00:11. | :00:13.
broke down off the Devon coast without any safety equipment on | :00:14. | :00:16.
board. Coastguards in Brixham helped rescue the man and woman after the | :00:17. | :00:19.
vessel became stranded off Plymouth, near Mount Wise. The boat didn't | :00:20. | :00:22.
even have a VHF radio on board. Now Coastguards are warning new boat | :00:23. | :00:25.
owners to think twice before going to sea without the right safety | :00:26. | :00:38.
knowledge. It means that, if you do not have the right equipment in | :00:39. | :00:41.
terms of communication, we don't know where you are and have to send | :00:42. | :00:45.
somebody out to go and find you, tow you back in again, and it ties up | :00:46. | :00:48.
people who should be looking after people who are possibly in serious | :00:49. | :00:53.
trouble and need our assistance. Business leaders estimate up to ten | :00:54. | :00:56.
thousand jobs could be created across Devon after the government | :00:57. | :00:58.
announced that parts of the county including Torbay, have been | :00:59. | :01:00.
recommended for Assisted Area Status. It means firms in | :01:01. | :01:02.
economically disadvantaged areas could benefit from more EU funding | :01:03. | :01:05.
and government help to recruit more staff. It is going to help | :01:06. | :01:16.
employment, and that has got to be beneficial. It is going to help | :01:17. | :01:19.
businesses. Businesses will need to apply for the various pots of money | :01:20. | :01:22.
that are available but it is trying to bring the economy up to speed in | :01:23. | :01:26.
those areas that have traditionally lagged behind the rest of Devon. An | :01:27. | :01:36.
extremely rare collection of Military vehicles will soon go under | :01:37. | :01:39.
the hammer in Cornwall. Retired farmer Bob White from Millbrook has | :01:40. | :01:41.
been collecting and lovingly restoring old World War Two | :01:42. | :01:44.
transport vehicles for more than 25 years. There's already been | :01:45. | :01:46.
international interest in the retirement sale. I shall be very sad | :01:47. | :02:00.
to see them go. I have had many years of enjoyment out of them and I | :02:01. | :02:05.
think it is time now to let them go to other people who I am sure will | :02:06. | :02:09.
look after them just as much as I have. Hundreds of people have | :02:10. | :02:18.
descended on the Rame Peninsula in South East Cornwall for a | :02:19. | :02:20.
traditional May Day celebration. The Black Prince flowerboat procession | :02:21. | :02:23.
makes it way through the streets of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cornwall. | :02:24. | :02:26.
Alison Johns reports. The villages are decked out in red and white for | :02:27. | :02:35.
the procession. The flower boat is carried through the streets before | :02:36. | :02:38.
being launched into the sea later in the day. The children come and dance | :02:39. | :02:44.
every year and learn the maypole. It is a wonderful community spirit, | :02:45. | :02:47.
lovely for the children to have their own festival. It is important | :02:48. | :02:52.
to keep the tradition going. Troops of Morris dancers from across the | :02:53. | :02:55.
South West follow the boat with stops at local hostelries across the | :02:56. | :02:59.
way. They are joined by children from local schools. Today is a | :03:00. | :03:04.
special day for Millbrook's town crier, who is recovering from cancer | :03:05. | :03:09.
in his tongue and neck. Are you in full voice? Not quite full voice but | :03:10. | :03:14.
a lot of people are pleased about that, I shall be a lot quieter! The | :03:15. | :03:19.
children's prizes have been judged... This tradition started | :03:20. | :03:24.
before the war but died out when so many local men failed to come home. | :03:25. | :03:28.
It was revived years ago and is now a major part of the local calendar | :03:29. | :03:31.
as people banish winter and welcome in the spring. A spring festival has | :03:32. | :03:44.
also been held on the Somerset Levels today. After the devastating | :03:45. | :03:47.
floods, today's festivities at Kingsbury brought a much needed | :03:48. | :03:49.
break from the recovery work, as well as raising money for local | :03:50. | :04:01.
charities. Sisters with a combined age of 200 have been celebrating | :04:02. | :04:04.
their birthday with family and friends in North Devon today. Freda | :04:05. | :04:07.
and Doll are identical twins who were born on the 5th of May 1914. | :04:08. | :04:10.
Spotlight's Leigh Rundle was invited to the party. They were born five | :04:11. | :04:17.
minutes apart, but today arrived together in style. They treated me | :04:18. | :04:24.
like royalty. When the car pulled up, I said I am not royalty, you | :04:25. | :04:29.
know! You did not know that the Rolls`Royce was picking you up? I | :04:30. | :04:33.
did not know. They kept it all a secret. This is marvellous. Are you | :04:34. | :04:40.
enjoying yourself? Yes, very nice. I did not expect all this. Among the | :04:41. | :04:45.
guests, they're two younger sisters who are both in their 90s. A full | :04:46. | :04:49.
five generations of the family were here. It is absolutely amazing, | :04:50. | :04:53.
identical twin sisters, to be 100 years old. Two of their sisters are | :04:54. | :05:02.
here. What do they put their longevity down to? Well, their dad's | :05:03. | :05:08.
home`grown veg. We were brought up in the country, we had all fresh | :05:09. | :05:13.
veg, because money was scarce. We always used to get plenty of | :05:14. | :05:18.
vegetables. That is what it takes. I think we started in life well. And | :05:19. | :05:32.
it shows no sign of letting up. Time now for the weather and David has | :05:33. | :05:34.
the latest. Hello, good evening. After a | :05:35. | :05:45.
reasonable weekend, it is going downhill this week, a change to much | :05:46. | :05:48.
more unsettled conditions and there will be quite a breeze blowing as | :05:49. | :05:52.
well and that will see plenty of showers, as well as some persistent | :05:53. | :05:55.
rain. Some of that rain coming our way tonight, it is moving fairly | :05:56. | :05:59.
steadily, but as you can see, it is low pressure taking charge of wet | :06:00. | :06:01.
weather patterns, right through this corner of Europe and it means we | :06:02. | :06:05.
will stay breezy and unsettled. The rain overnight could be heavy, but | :06:06. | :06:08.
it will move swiftly, last to clear from the Channel Islands, so | :06:09. | :06:10.
temperatures overnight should not fall below ten degrees. Tomorrow | :06:11. | :06:13.
will be bright, showers developing through the morning and into the | :06:14. | :06:16.
afternoon, falling in lines as we move to the second part of the day, | :06:17. | :06:19.
where we get some sunshine, possibly up to 16 degrees, the top | :06:20. | :06:22.
temperature, but a brisk south`westerly breeze will make it | :06:23. | :06:27.
feel cooler along the coastline. When the showers show, it will feel | :06:28. | :06:32.
cooler. The week is unsettled, we will see more cloud around on | :06:33. | :06:35.
Wednesday and the risk of showers developing on Wednesday afternoon, | :06:36. | :06:38.
one or two of those could be heavy, but a lot of dry weather for the | :06:39. | :06:42.
middle of the week, more persistent rain on Thursday and that will turn | :06:43. | :06:45.
showery as we move into Friday. Have a nice evening. Goodbye for now. | :06:46. | :06:51.
Don't forget Late Kick`Off tonight at 11:35pm, but i'll be back with | :06:52. | :06:54.
the late news just before 10:15pm. In the meantime, do enjoy the rest | :06:55. | :06:56.
of your Bank Holiday. The sunshine today for the bank | :06:57. | :07:12.
holiday produced the highest temperature of the long weekend in | :07:13. | :07:16.
eastern England today, at 20 Celsius. But to the west, the cloud | :07:17. | :07:21.
has been gathering. We have seen a bit of rain in Northern Ireland and | :07:22. | :07:25.
western Scotland, but the thicker cloud now pushing into the | :07:26. | :07:27.
south-west of England is delivering more rain. It will become more | :07:28. | :07:34.
extensive over the next few hours. A ragged area of rainfall will move | :07:35. | :07:37.
east as the night goes on. If | :07:38. | :07:38. |
