No answer at 999 ` why one man's calls to emergency | :00:08. | :00:18.
Plus the highest earthly appeal ` we meet the islander writing to | :00:19. | :00:25.
the Pope in protest at plans for his local church. | :00:26. | :00:27.
And the relay hits the road in Guernsey. | :00:28. | :00:30.
More children get their hands on the Commonwealth Games b`ton | :00:31. | :00:49.
In shock and disbelief ` that's how one man was left | :00:50. | :00:52.
in Jersey when his 999 call wasn't dealt with efficiently. | :00:53. | :00:55.
The first call wasn't answered and on another separate occ`sion | :00:56. | :01:00.
his call was put through to the wrong emergency service. | :01:01. | :01:02.
He wants the company JT, which runs the call centre, | :01:03. | :01:05.
Lets cross live to our reporter regarding pay parking. We whll | :01:06. | :01:25.
attempt to get that back for you very shortly. In other news today, | :01:26. | :01:34.
shock and disbelief. That is how one man was left in jersey after he s | :01:35. | :01:39.
999 call was not dealt with efficiently on two occasions. | :01:40. | :02:16.
I was in shock and this leave. You have an emergency number to ring and | :02:17. | :02:23.
when you ring a number like that you expect it to be answered quhckly and | :02:24. | :02:28.
for the phone still to be rhnging after four minutes and 12 sdconds, I | :02:29. | :02:31.
could not understand what w`s happening. | :02:32. | :02:41.
And on another occasion, when he needed police help, | :02:42. | :02:44.
he was put through to the Ambulance Service instead. | :02:45. | :02:46.
All emergency calls in Jersdy come through here to JT operators. | :02:47. | :02:49.
They answer 99.5 percent of calls within five seconds. | :02:50. | :02:53.
80 percent of those calls aren't real | :02:54. | :02:56.
emergencies, many are hoaxes, pocket dials and numbers dialled wrongly. | :02:57. | :03:04.
I'm sorry I didn't mean emergency, I dialled back on a voicemahl. | :03:05. | :03:12.
But how did a genuine emergdncy call slip through the systel? | :03:13. | :03:22.
This was simply human error. It doesn't happen very often. We have | :03:23. | :03:31.
about 30,000 999 calls a ye`r and those two are the only ones we are | :03:32. | :03:35.
aware rot. We are sorry for the inconvenience cause. Let's return to | :03:36. | :03:55.
our top story. Some decisions have been made about pay parking that is | :03:56. | :04:13.
on the way. There will be bdtter facilities for pedestrians `nd buses | :04:14. | :04:17.
will be free. I say free, btt you will have to pay for a card that | :04:18. | :04:21.
will let you on and then after 8 months it will be looked at again. | :04:22. | :04:25.
Paid parking is the one thing that has been decided today, despite a | :04:26. | :04:40.
lot of opposition. A small group of people will have to pay arotnd 1300 | :04:41. | :04:48.
a year for long`term parking. One idea that is out is an annu`l ? 6 | :04:49. | :04:55.
charge for your parking block which you will have to use in short`term | :04:56. | :05:02.
spaces. Was thrown out becatse of the work involved and if people had | :05:03. | :05:13.
to revalidate it every year. It will take staff working for half a year | :05:14. | :05:21.
to process it. Then everyond would have two renew their parking clock | :05:22. | :05:25.
every year. Any decisions m`de today will not happen overnight. The | :05:26. | :05:33.
environment Department still needs to go out to tender for a ndw bus | :05:34. | :05:41.
service. We don't know when these changes will come into forcd. We | :05:42. | :05:46.
will keep you up to date. Meanwhile, Jersey's ambulance | :05:47. | :05:50.
service could soon follow the UK system by having a crew specifically | :05:51. | :05:52.
for less urgent calls. The service is looking into trialing | :05:53. | :05:55.
a non`emergency crew to easd the Ambulances responded to over 7, 00 | :05:56. | :05:58.
calls last year ` a rise of nearly A 42`year`old man | :05:59. | :06:03.
from Guernsey has been sentdnced to eight years in prison for sdxual | :06:04. | :06:07.
offences against two young girls. Wayne Martin Brouard was convicted | :06:08. | :06:10.
in February for the indecent assault He's also been found guilty | :06:11. | :06:13.
of four counts of taking indecent photographs of an | :06:14. | :06:17.
11`year`old disabled girl in 20 1. An eight year custodial sentence was | :06:18. | :06:20.
given alongside a five year extended sentence to be | :06:21. | :06:22.
served after he leaves prison. To Catholics, he's | :06:23. | :06:28.
the closest thing to God on Earth, but now the Pope is being asked to | :06:29. | :06:31.
intervene in a Jersey plannhng row. Proposals to turn the Catholic | :06:32. | :06:35.
church in Gorey Village into houses and parking has upset | :06:36. | :06:37.
the local congregation. And one campaigner has turndd to | :06:38. | :06:39.
the Vatican for help. It is not every day you write a | :06:40. | :06:56.
letter to the Pope, but that is what Fraser Martin is doing. He has been | :06:57. | :07:00.
campaigning to stop plans to demolish a disused church to make | :07:01. | :07:06.
way for two houses with our king. I think as far as asking any darthly | :07:07. | :07:11.
authority, I have gone to the highest. I have every confidence | :07:12. | :07:21.
that I will get a response from the Pope because I feel that wh`t I am | :07:22. | :07:28.
doing is right. This building in Gorey Village was originallx a | :07:29. | :07:32.
chapel. It came a cinema and then in the 1950 is a catholic church, but | :07:33. | :07:37.
it was close last year. Now the Catholic Church wants to turn the | :07:38. | :07:45.
land into two houses. And it is redundant and it is being dhsposed | :07:46. | :07:49.
of in the normal way. We ard seeking planning position to allow the sale | :07:50. | :07:55.
to go ahead. As a charity, we have two get the best we can get from the | :07:56. | :08:02.
land. The architect behind the plans does not think they are | :08:03. | :08:08.
controversial and believes they will improve the village, but a petition | :08:09. | :08:11.
against the plans is growing here. We have 159 signatures. People like | :08:12. | :08:22.
Fraser thinks that the plans are out of touch. I don't think the plans | :08:23. | :08:28.
will be passed. As I have s`id before, I would chain my self to the | :08:29. | :08:34.
railings on the developers love in. `` chain myself. No decision has yet | :08:35. | :08:43.
been made and as Fraser posted his letter to the Vatican, he hopes that | :08:44. | :08:48.
the Pope will consider the future of this building. | :08:49. | :08:55.
The Commonwealth Games Baton has continued it's tour of the Channel | :08:56. | :08:58.
Islands today ` touring Guernsey, carried by school children. | :08:59. | :09:00.
And children aren't the only ones who got to hold it. | :09:01. | :09:03.
Mike Wilkins is live in Guernsey now with the star of the show itself. | :09:04. | :09:23.
It is great to be holding this. Inside there is a secret message | :09:24. | :09:30.
from her Majesty the Queen which will not be revealed until the | :09:31. | :09:33.
opening ceremony. On the top is a granite gemstone which will be | :09:34. | :09:39.
donated to the island on it departure. To release the gdmstone, | :09:40. | :09:45.
you have two solved a puzzld. But what a date it has had. | :09:46. | :09:58.
As the sun beat down on this small nation, children at | :09:59. | :10:01.
Le Rondin School were about to become part of a huge movemdnt. | :10:02. | :10:04.
They along with pupils from the Forest School were some | :10:05. | :10:07.
of the lucky ones to welcomd the baton on its busy day. | :10:08. | :10:17.
It is great that we will be able to hold it. It is amazing. It has been | :10:18. | :10:25.
all over the world and Guernsey is a tiny island. We are going to get a | :10:26. | :10:29.
hold it. It is incredible. Her Majesty would've been proud to | :10:30. | :10:35.
see her baton ushered Shortly afterwards the baton was | :10:36. | :10:38.
then on its way through the streets and lanes of Guernsey as its team | :10:39. | :10:43.
kept to its jam`packed schedule And a jam`packed assembly w`s | :10:44. | :10:46.
waiting for it on its next visit For many, the thought | :10:47. | :10:50.
of holding something the Quden has The baton couldn't stay for long | :10:51. | :10:54.
as it had plenty It was really great. I touched what | :10:55. | :10:58.
the Queen has touched. The baton couldn't stay for long | :10:59. | :11:06.
as it had plenty I have never been part of anything | :11:07. | :11:17.
like this This week the focus is very much | :11:18. | :11:34.
on the community and spreading the goodwill | :11:35. | :11:37.
of the Commonwealth, but behind it So how will Guernsey do at the Games | :11:38. | :11:39.
in Glasgow? Well BBC Radio Guernsey's Sports | :11:40. | :11:44.
Reporter is Isla Blatchford. Guernsey's won six medals | :11:45. | :11:49.
since joining the Commonwealth Games and it's been 20 years | :11:50. | :11:58.
since Guernsey's last medal, Our one | :11:59. | :12:02.
and only Gold was courtesy of the late Adrian Breton in Atckland | :12:03. | :12:10.
in 1990, for the rapid fire pistol. And our last medal was a bronze | :12:11. | :12:13.
in Canada in 1994 as Adrian once again performed well with | :12:14. | :12:17.
his team`mate Graham Le Maitre. Our athletes go head to head with | :12:18. | :12:19.
some of the best profession`ls in their sport so it's going to be | :12:20. | :12:25.
tough in Glasgow, but some of them have already told | :12:26. | :12:30.
me they'll be aiming for medals Lee Merrien is well known | :12:31. | :12:33.
in athletics and even more so since representing Great Brhtain | :12:34. | :12:36.

doesn't happen very often. We have about 30,000 999 calls a ye`r and | :13:01. | :13:05.
those two are the only ones we are no easy racing. That is just three | :13:06. | :13:40.
members of the team. We havd 37 in nine sports, there could be more to | :13:41. | :13:49.
add. Thank you. That is it le and the baton. Tomorrow it will be | :13:50. | :13:58.
island hopping and we will follow it on its journey every step of the | :13:59. | :14:03.
weighing, here on the BBC and I will hand it over to the team. | :14:04. | :14:10.
Time to take a look at what weather will meet the baton. | :14:11. | :14:18.
We continue with the fine wdather for the last official day of the | :14:19. | :14:27.
Queen 's bat on relay. We do have the high`pressure continuing. `` | :14:28. | :14:33.
Queens baton relay. Turning warm in the afternoon with light winds. It | :14:34. | :14:41.
looks as if the fine weather will continue for at least the start of | :14:42. | :14:46.
the weekend. It should be a find and to the day to night. Mostly clear | :14:47. | :14:54.
skies and light winds. Mild night. Temperatures between nine and 1 | :14:55. | :14:57.
degrees. A fine and bright start tomorrow with plenty of sunshine. | :14:58. | :15:07.
Perhaps something whether cloud passing through in the afternoon. A | :15:08. | :15:13.
light to moderate breeze and it will feel warm in the sunshine whth highs | :15:14. | :15:13.

For the surfers, possibilitx of three foot waves and condithons will | :15:42. | :15:47.
be clean. So for the last official journey of the baton, it will be dry | :15:48. | :15:57.
and fine as it start its jotrney. We will keep the sunshine with light to | :15:58. | :17:30.
Kieron Davies from Braunton completed his hat trick competing | :17:31. | :17:33.
As Spotlight's Dave Gibbins reports, he achieved this against sole | :17:34. | :17:39.
of the strongest surfers from around the world. | :17:40. | :17:43.
All Kieron Davies needs is ` board and a paddle. | :17:44. | :17:46.
The 50`year`old has proved he's the best on the planet | :17:47. | :17:49.
for the third year running. And it's no fluke. | :17:50. | :17:53.
He devotes his time to his particular skill along the coasts | :17:54. | :17:56.
You'll find Kieron at Croydd Bay most of the time. | :17:57. | :18:03.
But on this occasion, he was at Sandymouth near Bude where the swell | :18:04. | :18:07.
It's just a joy to catch prdtty much any wave you want. | :18:08. | :18:13.
We get a lot of wind with that, a lot of choppy waves. | :18:14. | :18:19.
But waveski allows you to m`ke the most of the conditions we get | :18:20. | :18:22.
Waveskiing is different to Orthodox surfing. | :18:23. | :18:28.
It's a larger board, which weighs 6kgs, or 13lbs, | :18:29. | :18:31.
and it is for sitting on and catching a wave, instead of | :18:32. | :18:34.
How difficult was it for yot in Durban? | :18:35. | :18:39.
It wasn't too unlike Croyde Beach break. | :18:40. | :18:42.
It wasn't as big as we'd hoped it would be, but we had high | :18:43. | :18:45.
waves most days, and the water was thoroughly nice, 26 degrees | :18:46. | :18:57.
So being able to surf in bo`rd shorts day and, day out, | :18:58. | :19:00.
it helps the performance, r`ther than being wrapped in rubber. | :19:01. | :19:03.
Now, you're a floor layer as a profession. | :19:04. | :19:05.
How much time can you devotd to your sport? | :19:06. | :19:08.
I plan all my surfing trips and everything around my customers. | :19:09. | :19:11.
What comes first, waveski or your business? | :19:12. | :19:13.
Well, Kieron out there belids his 50 years of age. | :19:14. | :19:18.
He's king of waves, not only in Britain and Ireland | :19:19. | :19:21.
Proving if you're fit enough, you're young enough. | :19:22. | :19:31.
Now, a celebrity couple in Somerset have just welcomed | :19:32. | :19:39.
The happy event was eagerly anticipated by thousands of people | :19:40. | :19:44.
We've been following Boris and Brenda on Spotlight over | :19:45. | :19:48.
They're a pair of barn owls and now the latest addition to the family is | :19:49. | :19:59.
Call it the Outlook live alone at of the Big Brother house. `` c`ll it | :20:00. | :20:16.

give away the location, and we don't want to disturb the balance house `` | :20:34. | :20:40.
the barn owls. With the wonders of technology, we can actually see | :20:41. | :20:44.
them. Yes, and what we have got here is the two adults. And therd you go, | :20:45. | :20:53.
there is Burrowbridge, numbdr seven! It has become an Intdrnet | :20:54. | :20:57.
sensation globally, as thesd website comments show. From GDP in | :20:58. | :21:05.
Illinois... To two Reza, who, in the early hours is... Just saying what | :21:06. | :21:08.
she sees. Schools like this one have `ll | :21:09. | :21:20.
watched in class time. We try to check in every day. Familiar with, | :21:21. | :21:25.
if you've the version if yot forget it, and you don't go back for a few | :21:26. | :21:29.
days, you see such a differdnce in the owl at. Which is so exchting. | :21:30. | :21:34.
The owl population of Britahn has halved. The birds are struggling to | :21:35. | :21:38.
find food in areas like the Somerset Levels, underwater for so long. | :21:39. | :21:44.
Putting up nesting boxes was a campaign started two years `go to | :21:45. | :21:49.
try to reverse that decline. She's had a whopping seven aches. While | :21:50. | :21:53.
it's impossible to draw these conclusions, people behind this | :21:54. | :21:58.
project are encouraged. The big question that everybody is `sking is | :21:59. | :22:05.
will all seven survive? I don't know the answer, but it is a bit like | :22:06. | :22:10.
England winning the World Ctp. It's not impossible, they have a chance. | :22:11. | :22:15.
And they seem to have an awful lot of people around the world rooting | :22:16. | :22:19.
for them. Lovely story. | :22:20. | :22:24.
We saw some lovely sunshine earlier, let's see if it will continte. How | :22:25. | :22:30.
is it looking? We have a few more days of sunshine | :22:31. | :22:35.
to come. Good evening. Some very warm temperatures in the region | :22:36. | :22:41.
Tomorrow, we are going to sde some further spells of sunshine, a bit | :22:42. | :22:44.
more cloud with a set times through the day tomorrow. But, desphte | :22:45. | :22:49.
seeing more cloud, it is sthll going to be another warm day. So, we've | :22:50. | :22:54.
got high pressure with this. There are some cloud to the north and | :22:55. | :22:58.
west. But the high pressure is settling in place in the sotthern | :22:59. | :23:01.
parts of the UK, keeping those were the fronts of a from us. We will see | :23:02. | :23:06.
fine unsettled weather tomorrow a bit more cloud developing tomorrow. | :23:07. | :23:11.
There will be mist and fog forming overnight. There is a simil`r story | :23:12. | :23:18.
first aim to Friday with early mist and fog with some sunshine, then | :23:19. | :23:26.
cloud building up. Possibly a bit more cloud through Sunday. So far | :23:27. | :23:31.
today, we have seen some decent spells of sunshine, a littld bit of | :23:32. | :23:36.
cold which has developed here, a fine end to the day. With the light | :23:37. | :23:40.
winds, we will see some mist and fog patches forming. There is some risk | :23:41. | :23:48.
of kill fog. In the north, ` bit more cloud arriving here. Locally, | :23:49. | :23:56.
inland, a chilly night with temperatures down to five or six. | :23:57. | :24:00.
First thing tomorrow, so early mist or fog. A bit of cloud towards the | :24:01. | :24:07.
north coast. That should retreat into the afternoon. We could see a | :24:08. | :24:11.
bit more cloud building up through the afternoon. It will still be warm | :24:12. | :24:15.
with sunshine around. It will be another dry day tomorrow as well, | :24:16. | :24:19.
and we will seek temperaturds reaching 19. Tomorrow, with the | :24:20. | :24:25.
sunshine, the UV is going to be height are moderate, and we have | :24:26. | :24:28.
moderate pollen levels, too. In the Isles of Scilly, mainly dry | :24:29. | :24:35.
conditions, and we have light winds with us through the day tomorrow. | :24:36. | :24:40.
Here are the times of high water for tomorrow at Plymouth. | :24:41. | :24:51.
For the surface tomorrow, it will be generally quite clean conditions. | :24:52. | :24:57.
For the North Coast, we're looking at 2`3 foot waves. Out at sda | :24:58. | :25:05.
tomorrow, fair conditions whth some fog patches and just light `nd | :25:06. | :25:10.
variable winds. And then thd fine conditions continue through Friday | :25:11. | :25:14.
