That'3 all from t`e BBC Fews `t Six. So at's | :00:00. | :00:13.
Channel Islands News. Drownhng in debt, the woman who is struggling to | :00:14. | :00:21.
make ends meet, despite figtres that suggest islanders are seeking less | :00:22. | :00:24.
debt advice. All winter I suffered so much | :00:25. | :00:30.
depression, I have stayed in bed. 07 years on, the tribute to a | :00:31. | :00:37.
Canadian airman shot down in Guernsey ahead of D`Day. And the | :00:38. | :00:43.
need for speed. We are on the road as motormania comes to the Channel | :00:44. | :00:45.
Islands. Good evening. | :00:46. | :00:57.
Personal debt level levels hn Jersey are falling, according to the | :00:58. | :01:02.
Citizens Advice Bureau. The size of islanders' overall debt is down from | :01:03. | :01:07.
?5 million to ?3. 7 million last year. Fewer peek people are seeking | :01:08. | :01:12.
their help. But many are sthll struggling. We have this report The | :01:13. | :01:17.
bills keep piling up for Tish but she cannot afford to pay thdm. After | :01:18. | :01:22.
the loss of family member, she has fallen into debt. | :01:23. | :01:26.
I lost my mum, dad, husband and brother in the space of a fdw years. | :01:27. | :01:33.
All of the debt has come back to me. I just can't get, as soon as I get | :01:34. | :01:38.
myself clear, I think I am clear and something else hits plea. | :01:39. | :01:43.
She has not been able to afford the basics like heating her homd it is | :01:44. | :01:48.
affecting her emotionally. I cannot afford to eat propdrly | :01:49. | :01:52.
Regarding heating, I cannot afford to put it on at all. No way. All | :01:53. | :01:58.
winter I suffered so much ddpression I have stayed in bed. I havd an | :01:59. | :02:04.
electric blanket. Other than that, I would have been freezing thhs | :02:05. | :02:07.
winter. These are difficult times for Tish. | :02:08. | :02:12.
The number of islanders seeking money help in Jersey, howevdr has | :02:13. | :02:17.
dropped. Last year, the Cithzens Advice Bureau helping 241 pdople | :02:18. | :02:22.
with money problems totalling ? . 7 million. Fallen from 278 million | :02:23. | :02:28.
with a combined debt of ?5 lillion the year before. The charitx wants | :02:29. | :02:32.
to get the message out that there is light at the end of the tunnel. | :02:33. | :02:37.
The amount has reduced slightly I hope that is good news. And this | :02:38. | :02:42.
year we will see less clients. Over the last three or four years, the | :02:43. | :02:45.
values have been steadily increasing. | :02:46. | :02:49.
But some are stuck in a constant debt trap. A trap many feel they | :02:50. | :02:53.
will not be freed from any time soon. | :02:54. | :03:01.
There is concern tonight amongst disabled islanders that little has | :03:02. | :03:05.
changed in Guernsey since the passing of the Disability and | :03:06. | :03:07.
Inclusion Strategy last year. This was the scene when the strategy was | :03:08. | :03:11.
passed in November. Legislation coming from the tat guilty will not | :03:12. | :03:19.
be ready until 2016. Last nhght Guernsey Disability Alliancd | :03:20. | :03:24.
recognised progress in extr` care housing and careers' allowance but | :03:25. | :03:29.
agreed more should be done. There is not really a lot extra | :03:30. | :03:34.
happening. One of the reasons is that the Disability and Inclusion | :03:35. | :03:37.
Strategy is something that needs the biggest push from the centrd of | :03:38. | :03:41.
Government. Things that happen quickly tend to come from individual | :03:42. | :03:45.
departments. This one must come from the centre and the State is not | :03:46. | :03:49.
structured to do that well. The jury in the trial of a former | :03:50. | :03:56.
Jersey person has started to deliver its verdict. Graham Bushehr has | :03:57. | :04:05.
pleaded not guilty on counts, was alleged to have using parish money. | :04:06. | :04:13.
He claims that this was a h`d had take, he did not set out to use | :04:14. | :04:17.
parish funds. Sacrificing his life in the efforts | :04:18. | :04:22.
to maintain liberty and reg`in peace, the comments of a Canadian | :04:23. | :04:28.
air squadron remembering ond of its members killed 70 years ago. | :04:29. | :04:33.
Flight Lieutenant John Saville was helping the allies to travel | :04:34. | :04:38.
undetected to the beaches of Normandy on D`Day. | :04:39. | :04:41.
We have this report. NEWS REEL: The Channel Islands, well | :04:42. | :04:48.
in the invasion area are below. Guernsey and Alderney. Out of the | :04:49. | :04:55.
night sky they carry the glhders... More than 7,000 vessels heading for | :04:56. | :05:00.
France. To ensure that they could cross the Channel, German r`dar | :05:01. | :05:07.
needed to be knocked out. The Freya radar system at Fort George was | :05:08. | :05:11.
significant. At 8. 30am, Flhght Lieutenant John Saville led his | :05:12. | :05:14.
flight of eight Thai tifs on a successful attack on the | :05:15. | :05:18.
installation. But the 34`ye`r`old was hit by German antiaircr`ft fire | :05:19. | :05:24.
making a second run at the target and he died when the aircraft | :05:25. | :05:29.
crashed into Havelet Bay. It could have been scribing if the r`dar had | :05:30. | :05:35.
23409 been destroyed, something that was recognised by the peopld of | :05:36. | :05:38.
Guernsey. That would have woken up thd Germans | :05:39. | :05:43.
in a most amazing way. It w`s not allowed to happen it cost a life but | :05:44. | :05:47.
it saved thousands. One of the men who helped to locate | :05:48. | :05:52.
the aircraft, said it was only then that they confirmed that thd pilot | :05:53. | :05:56.
had remained with his plane. We did several dives, and found a | :05:57. | :06:04.
few personal items that proved that yes, Flight Lieutenant John Saville | :06:05. | :06:10.
was and remained with the ahrcraft. Many people don't realise that | :06:11. | :06:14.
behind me, Flight Lieutenant John Saville's ircraft is lying ` stone's | :06:15. | :06:20.
throw away in Havelet Bay. He was the only member of his flight not to | :06:21. | :06:24.
return that day. But the mission was a success. They succeeded in | :06:25. | :06:29.
knocking out the radar stathon but the Germans got it up and rtnning | :06:30. | :06:34.
but not until later in the day, allowing the Allied Forces tactical | :06:35. | :06:41.
surprise on D`Day. Tomorrow the BBC will have full | :06:42. | :06:47.
coverage of the events to m`rk the 70th anniversary of D`Day. We will | :06:48. | :06:51.
be talking to veterans about their memories on that pivotal dax in the | :06:52. | :06:54.
conflict. We will have more pictures for you | :06:55. | :07:00.
on BBC One at 7.00pm tomorrow night. Still ahead in Spotlight: Wd are | :07:01. | :07:05.
live at the Royal Cornwall Show with thousands of visitors. The sun | :07:06. | :07:10.
shining on us. As ever the `nimals the stars and we are meeting a very | :07:11. | :07:15.
special one. Now it is the day that petrol heads | :07:16. | :07:21.
have been waiting for, the Jersey International Motoring Festhval | :07:22. | :07:24.
starting tonight. Classic c`rs, motorbikes and carts will bd racing | :07:25. | :07:31.
around the island all weekend. Among them an 18`year`old jerksman with | :07:32. | :07:35.
dreams of stardom. Sophie Stlehria went to meet him. | :07:36. | :07:40.
`` Jerseyman. I love the idea of speed. | :07:41. | :07:47.
Jack Buetel racing at Donnington Park. One week later, and J`ck | :07:48. | :07:51.
Buetel is here. I was asked to ride in one of these. | :07:52. | :07:59.
I love Formula One racing. Le my dad and mum thought I would be `t the | :08:00. | :08:07.
right age of 14 to start. It is here where the pride takes place. Family | :08:08. | :08:13.
support is crucial in motorracing. This is Jack's dad's workshop. | :08:14. | :08:22.
We like to have a chat with what is going on. | :08:23. | :08:26.
I have managed to get into Jack s racing car but the fact he lanages | :08:27. | :08:32.
to ride 140 miles an hour in this space is surprising. But th`t is | :08:33. | :08:35.
what he will be doing with lany other cars in Jersey over the | :08:36. | :08:40.
weekend. When the who mile `n hour speed limit is to be abandoned! The | :08:41. | :08:46.
festival organisers have bedn getting ready since 4.00am. An event | :08:47. | :08:51.
that has taken a year to organise. But a value Festival. | :08:52. | :08:55.
It is a huge commitment. But it brings out a lot of people on to the | :08:56. | :08:59.
island to compete. We feel that is important. Part of doing thd cart | :09:00. | :09:05.
racing is starting to help with the week`long festival. This is helping | :09:06. | :09:16.
the economy for the island. Hopefully this will encourage more | :09:17. | :09:20.
young islanders like Jack to join in the sport. | :09:21. | :09:24.
And now it is time for the weather. It is warming up? It is. We are set | :09:25. | :09:30.
to deliver for tomorrow. Looking to be dry and warm with good stnny | :09:31. | :09:33.
spells and temperatures for many of us into the 20s. | :09:34. | :09:40.
Now the weather today, we h`ve been between two weather systems, keeping | :09:41. | :09:44.
things settled and light. Tomorrow a breeze. This low pressure sxstem | :09:45. | :09:49.
adding to the west turning things more threatening into the wdekend | :09:50. | :09:53.
with the risk of showers on Saturday. So let's have a look at | :09:54. | :09:58.
the detail tonight. The clotd is building. A risk of one or two light | :09:59. | :10:02.
showers, most of us seeing ` dry night. The winds light overnight. | :10:03. | :10:08.
Under the cloud the temperatures not falling below 12 or 13 Celshus. | :10:09. | :10:13.
Tomorrow there may ablittle bit of cloud. Starting to clear thdn a dry | :10:14. | :10:18.
and bright day with good long sunny spells. Now the temperatures | :10:19. | :10:23.
tomorrow, in sheltered parts of Jersey, there could be up to 26 | :10:24. | :10:29.
Celsius. More of a breeze tomorrow if you are along the south or the | :10:30. | :10:33.
east coast of Jersey there could be a little more breeze. But a | :10:34. | :10:37.
pleasant`feeling day with the warm temperatures. | :10:38. | :10:38.
The forecast tomorrow: Looking at the outlook. Into | :10:39. | :11:09.
tomorrow night it clouds ovdr after the nice day. A risk of showers | :11:10. | :11:13.
pushing in overnight Friday and first thing on Saturday. Fedling | :11:14. | :11:19.
humid too. Once the showers pass through it will feel fresher. The | :11:20. | :11:23.
temperatures down a little. Sunday mainly dry and bright with ` Rick of | :11:24. | :11:27.
a shower on Monday. Thank you very much. | :11:28. | :11:32.
That will do nicely! That is it for now. In a moment we are joining | :11:33. | :11:35.
Spotlight at the Royal Cornwall Show. And the programme tomorrow | :11:36. | :11:41.
night at 6. 30pm is later at 7. 0pm due to the D`Day coverage. Hope you | :11:42. | :11:46.
can join us then. Goodbye. | :11:47. | :12:02.
Time for the action of the first day of the Royal Cornwall Show. | :12:03. | :12:11.
Welcome to Weybridge. Day one of Royal Cornwall Show has gotten off | :12:12. | :12:16.
to a flying start. Every avdnue packed full of people and dhnosaurs. | :12:17. | :12:20.
I think it has been one of the busiest starts to the Royal Cornwall | :12:21. | :12:24.
Show I can remember in many years. Over tonight and tomorrow, on | :12:25. | :12:33.
spotlight, we take you on a tour of this 100`acer showground. Today is | :12:34. | :12:39.
lived up to the Royal billing with a special visitor. Everyone sdemed to | :12:40. | :12:42.
enjoy the sunshine. As ever, there was lots to see and to do. We can | :12:43. | :12:47.
show you a little of what is on offer. | :12:48. | :12:50.
Andrea has been taking a look around. The Royal Cornwall Show in | :12:51. | :12:59.
the sunshine... It's very nhce today. The weather is just right. | :13:00. | :13:04.
We have been every year for the last five years. This is the best weather | :13:05. | :13:09.
we have started with. We ard lucky there. | :13:10. | :13:13.
Thousands of visitors turn tp for the biggest annual event of | :13:14. | :13:18.
Cornwall. This, the 220th ydar. It is a great turnout for south | :13:19. | :13:25.
Devon. Lovely to see a strong class of hers. Really pleased. | :13:26. | :13:32.
I think it is an amazing spdctacle, showing everything that Cornwall is | :13:33. | :13:37.
good of and they should be proud of. And a Royal visitor, the cotnt yes, | :13:38. | :13:41.
sir of Wessex, with lots to see and a schedule to stick to. | :13:42. | :13:49.
`` Countess of Wessex. Judging is tense and the he`t is on | :13:50. | :14:15.
for the first prize. When they judge the sheep they will | :14:16. | :14:21.
just do that... It is nice hf it falls easy. Tomorrow he is to be | :14:22. | :14:26.
shown against the Royal Cornwall winner and the Bath and the West | :14:27. | :14:30.
winner. As ever, the animals are thd stars | :14:31. | :14:34.
of the show with some playing up to the camera. So day one has been | :14:35. | :14:38.
blessed with sun. Just two lore days to go. | :14:39. | :14:58.
A very public face there for the Royal Cornwall Show. Behind the | :14:59. | :15:05.
scenes farming is a 24/7 job. We are at the cattle ring a popular draw | :15:06. | :15:09.
for the crowds. Look at how many are here watching the best anim`ls in | :15:10. | :15:16.
show. Yet when the animals `re in show, the norm farm life dust | :15:17. | :15:22.
continue, that means that the cows must being milked! There ard about | :15:23. | :15:27.
80 dairy cows being shown over the next three days. | :15:28. | :15:30.
Cows are judged when they are as full of milk as possible. The way | :15:31. | :15:34.
that the udder looks is what the judges are looking for, or one of | :15:35. | :15:38.
them so, the timing of the lilking is crucial. This is one of the first | :15:39. | :15:46.
breed champions of the day. It is a Cornish`bred Guernsey. Minutes later | :15:47. | :15:50.
she is in the milking particle your next door to the cattle shed. | :15:51. | :15:56.
We have the particle your open 4 hours a day with staff covering it | :15:57. | :16:01.
in eight`hour shifts. What happens to the milk? It is used for the | :16:02. | :16:05.
supermarkets. So you could have champion's milk in | :16:06. | :16:12.
your cuppa! For the dairy f`rmers it is a five`day show, so the girls are | :16:13. | :16:18.
in and out of the milking p`rticle your a few times over the ndxt few | :16:19. | :16:25.
days. We have been to see some cows that | :16:26. | :16:34.
take themselves to be milked! This is robotic milking. The cows walk in | :16:35. | :16:40.
when they are hungry. The m`chine does the cleaning, fits the cups | :16:41. | :16:48.
with a 3D laser camera, milks the teets and then steam`cleans itself. | :16:49. | :16:53.
But kit like this costs abott ?100,000. But the farmer saxs that | :16:54. | :16:57.
his happier cows are produchng more milk. | :16:58. | :17:02.
Old style you are pushing them in, stood in the back of a colldcting | :17:03. | :17:07.
yard, here they can come whdn they want it is more quiet, relaxed. If a | :17:08. | :17:12.
cow is relaxed you produce lore milk. They don't want to be | :17:13. | :17:15.
stressed. This machine is called an Astro | :17:16. | :17:22.
haute. A giant leap for farling kind? It remains to be seen. But | :17:23. | :17:28.
traditional farmers are sayhng it is the way forward. | :17:29. | :17:32.
What I love about the Royal Cornwall Show it is the friendly atmosphere | :17:33. | :17:33.
here. Whatever avenue you w`lk celebrate than at the Royal Cornwall | :17:34. | :18:14.
Show where in 19`27 they met at a young farmer's dance. | :18:15. | :18:19.
One of my friends wanted to dance with an other friend. When they | :18:20. | :18:24.
parted, Charles said, I will take the one with glasses, so th`t was | :18:25. | :18:25.
it. We were again. I am still chewing on that. | :18:26. | :19:46.
You are married? Yes, and lhving in England! So, what advice can the | :19:47. | :19:52.
Kessels give to the Smiths to are a happy marriage? Always kiss at the | :19:53. | :19:59.
end of a night, whatever thd day has brought and just carry on. That is | :20:00. | :20:05.
it, yes. A quick kiss for the Missus Yes! | :20:06. | :20:10.
The romantic side of the Roxal Cornwall Show. Earlier we wdnt to | :20:11. | :20:14.
watch preparations for a rather unusual contest. On the one hand | :20:15. | :20:19.
there was horse power, on the other manpower. It was the Cornish pirates | :20:20. | :20:26.
versus George the Shire horse. That may sound uneven, numberswise but | :20:27. | :20:30.
believe me, George can hold his own. As it was a competition we had to | :20:31. | :20:37.
choose which side to support. Natalie chose the horse, just yawned | :20:38. | :20:42.
I were cheering for the Cornish Pirates. | :20:43. | :20:47.
You would think there would be no contest. This manpower against one | :20:48. | :20:50.
horse power. So here is the boy taking on the | :20:51. | :20:55.
Pirates. Who is this? This hs George. A seven`year`old Shhre | :20:56. | :21:00.
stallion. His birthday was on Tuesday. | :21:01. | :21:04.
Happy birthday, George... I am giving it a go. This is the only | :21:05. | :21:09.
time I will ever get to trahn with the Cornish Pirates. | :21:10. | :21:15.
Can I give you a brush, George? He is lovely and shiny. | :21:16. | :21:27.
He is so placid for someone so strong. | :21:28. | :21:30.
A beautiful boy. It is too early in the mornhng for | :21:31. | :21:34.
this. If you hear a crack, just call the ambulance. | :21:35. | :21:42.
Is that OK? George, we did ht, darling! Is that lower? Lowdr? | :21:43. | :21:49.
After my recent illness, I `m not so sure this is a good idea. | :21:50. | :21:58.
You look like you are suffering He has a pulling capacity of anywhere | :21:59. | :22:04.
between five and seven tonnds. Apparently the horse weighs a tonne | :22:05. | :22:08.
and it can pull seven tonnes. How much do this lot weigh? Two | :22:09. | :22:16.
tons? We have not got a hopd in hell! Now, George, just pull, | :22:17. | :22:22.
really, really hard. We have a secret weapon. | :22:23. | :22:46.
It is over to you. Wasn't he brilliant? Fantastic. You | :22:47. | :22:51.
can find out what happened tomorrow here on Spotlight. OK, it is time | :22:52. | :22:54.
for the weather. Obviously David is here. How is it | :22:55. | :22:59.
looking? We have done well today. Before I go into the forecast, for | :23:00. | :23:04.
the shao showground here. Ldt me show you what we saw earlier. We did | :23:05. | :23:10.
not see it but a drone went up above the showground before it opdned We | :23:11. | :23:16.
got some great shots of the blue skies and how large the showground | :23:17. | :23:20.
is. Much of the morning there was sunshine. Then the cloud crdpt in. | :23:21. | :23:24.
It has not spoiled the day `nd the temperatures have been just about | :23:25. | :23:29.
right. Let's start with the detaildd | :23:30. | :23:34.
forecast for the Royal Cornwall Show: | :23:35. | :23:36.
It looks like it could be a warm day tomorrow. Temperatures up to 19 | :23:37. | :23:44.
