Channel Islands is who left their lives in World War I are being | :00:26. | :00:31.
remembered to Dave. In Guernsey the lights have | :00:32. | :00:40.
The thousands of Channel Islanders who lost their lives in World War | :00:41. | :00:43.
People across the Islands have been asked to switch off all | :00:44. | :00:46.
but one light at home tonight to remember those who fought. | :00:47. | :00:49.
In Guernsey the lights have been switched off | :00:50. | :00:51.
In St Peter Port the church bell was rung throughout the day in honour | :00:52. | :00:56.
The Town Church bell tolled 1,470 times today. | :00:57. | :01:00.
Once for each of the Bailiwick men that lost | :01:01. | :01:02.
It struck me that one could toll a bell 1,470 times and I played with | :01:03. | :01:07.
the idea and worked out that if you did it every 20 seconds it would | :01:08. | :01:12.
take all day, all the working day, and I thought that would be a chance | :01:13. | :01:20.
for everybody to notice it. It is quite an appropriate way to just | :01:21. | :01:27.
remind people and remember and commemorate what they did for us. | :01:28. | :01:38.
And another chance to remember and reflect today. | :01:39. | :01:41.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. | :01:42. | :01:48.
I think it is good for us to remember the massive sacrifice that | :01:49. | :01:53.
those families made and not only that, the fact that Guernsey itself | :01:54. | :01:57.
lost nearly 1,500 young men and that made a significant | :01:58. | :02:01.
I encourage you when you look on the war memorial | :02:02. | :02:08.
like we will do in a moment, to focus on just one of those names. | :02:09. | :02:14.
Then remind yourself that all of that life | :02:15. | :02:16.
Henry Thomas de Jersey was my grandfather and he was 28 years | :02:17. | :02:24.
old and he had five children and he left my grandmother widow. | :02:25. | :02:31.
There were not many streets or parishes that were not affected | :02:32. | :02:35.
by the bereavement of men lost and it was a big hole | :02:36. | :02:38.
And today's a chance for us all to remember that. | :02:39. | :02:45.
100 years on from when war was declared. | :02:46. | :03:02.
Around 2,000 people have gathered in Jersey's Royal Square this | :03:03. | :03:05.
evening for a ceremony and parade to remember the 100th anniversary | :03:06. | :03:07.
have you ever seen the Royal Square looking like this? Months of | :03:08. | :03:18.
preparation came together this evening to mark 100 years since the | :03:19. | :03:23.
First World War was declared. The islanders will sit in these rows | :03:24. | :03:27.
behind me including dignitaries like the bailiffs on the left turning | :03:28. | :03:32.
governor and the UK minister who has responsibility for the Channel | :03:33. | :03:39.
Islands and their relationship with the United Kingdom. What is | :03:40. | :03:46.
happening tonight? This is a combination of ceremonial and | :03:47. | :03:49.
creativity with a full production behind this event this evening and | :03:50. | :03:53.
it will be a combination of music, lights, readings, speeches, the | :03:54. | :03:58.
learning offerings and a service against `` service as well so there | :03:59. | :04:02.
is a better for everybody. It will be very emotive and we were chosen | :04:03. | :04:08.
pieces to link Guernsey and Jersey very closely with World I and there | :04:09. | :04:13.
will be some images that put Jersey right at the heart of World War I in | :04:14. | :04:18.
terms of the commitments it made and the servicemen who served and those | :04:19. | :04:22.
who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you. A key part of this | :04:23. | :04:26.
evening will be a lantern procession that will have dozens of islanders | :04:27. | :04:36.
from each parish in Jersey. I am toward water noting the lantern | :04:37. | :04:39.
procession. What will happen tonight? We have 12 people from each | :04:40. | :04:46.
parish so that is 144 in total. Ten people will be carrying these | :04:47. | :04:51.
lanterns which will be illuminated and Beowulf violin in a procession | :04:52. | :04:54.
in the Royal Square at a given time and the constables will lay wreaths | :04:55. | :05:02.
during the ceremony. `` and they will file in in a procession. There | :05:03. | :05:10.
will be also a minute's silence to mark the exact moment that the First | :05:11. | :05:12.
World War was declared. Jersey is giving ?120,000 to help | :05:13. | :05:14.
those affected by the violence Hundreds have been killed | :05:15. | :05:17.
and thousands injured in Israel and the Gaza strip | :05:18. | :05:19.
since violence escalated in July. The Jersey Overseas Aid Commission | :05:20. | :05:23.
has approved a ?30,000 grant to each of the four | :05:24. | :05:24.
charities Christian Aid, the British Many athletes from Guernsey | :05:25. | :05:31.
and Jersey have of made their way home today after the Commonwealth | :05:32. | :05:38.
Games came to a close last night. Almost 80 athletes from the | :05:39. | :05:43.
Channel Islands competed in the Glasgow Games, some for the first | :05:44. | :05:45.
time and others for the last time. Sadly no medals are being brought | :05:46. | :05:48.
home, but what do the Islands need to do to break the medal drought | :05:49. | :05:51.
that's lasted for over 20 years? Spectators filled the streets of | :05:52. | :06:08.
Glasgow for one of the last events of the Commonwealth Games, the | :06:09. | :06:13.
men's Road race. Two cyclists from Jersey and six from Guernsey were | :06:14. | :06:19.
competing among the 140 strong race. It was a technically difficult | :06:20. | :06:22.
course for the riders but the heavy rain made it worse. Slippery | :06:23. | :06:28.
conditions caused many cyclists to crash including James McLauchlan | :06:29. | :06:34.
from Jersey. By the night flap Tobyn Horton was the only Channel Islander | :06:35. | :06:38.
left and it made it harder to compete and heeded not finish the | :06:39. | :06:42.
race. I was trying to position myself well but it is hard when you | :06:43. | :06:47.
are a small ratio `` nation and you have the other countries riding well | :06:48. | :06:51.
with teams and you end up getting pushed to the back. Being a single | :06:52. | :06:56.
Guernsey person up there it is pretty tough trying to hold your | :06:57. | :07:00.
own. There was also disappointment on the netball court. Serena Guthrie | :07:01. | :07:05.
was playing 14 England. After losing by just one point in the last two | :07:06. | :07:10.
seconds of their semifinal match against New Zealand they faced | :07:11. | :07:13.
Jamaica in the bronze medal play`off. It was a close game but | :07:14. | :07:19.
Jamaica won the match. Although disappointed not to win a medal, | :07:20. | :07:24.
Serena Guthrie was pleased to be a part of team England. It is nice, | :07:25. | :07:29.
every athlete in team England and every other team will be flying the | :07:30. | :07:33.
flag for where they come from on where they have grown up so I am | :07:34. | :07:37.
just pleased to do it for Jersey. There was more need to be done | :07:38. | :07:44.
before the next Commonwealth Games? Every time we see the level of | :07:45. | :07:48.
competition increase and improve. We look at that at each Games at the | :07:49. | :07:53.
qualification standards that we set out we will review it for 2018 and | :07:54. | :07:58.
we are aware that we will have two increase our standards again. As | :07:59. | :08:04.
team jersey, if we can improve the preparation and the lifestyle of | :08:05. | :08:07.
athletes and their whole attitude to sport then perhaps the athletes for | :08:08. | :08:14.
us will be a bit stronger and better organised because a lot of those | :08:15. | :08:19.
things can give us better results. As the Commonwealth Games close, | :08:20. | :08:24.
preparations begin for the next one in 2018. We'll Jersey and Guernsey | :08:25. | :08:30.
be able to bring a medal of any colour back from Australia's Gold | :08:31. | :08:31.
Coast? Jersey's Under 19 cricket | :08:32. | :08:35.
team have been promoted to The island side won all four of | :08:36. | :08:37.
their matches against runners`up the Netherlands, Denmark, Guernsey and | :08:38. | :08:42.
Italy in ICC Europe Division Two. As well as promotion to | :08:43. | :08:44.
ICC Europe Division One, Jersey now also have the opportunity to qualify | :08:45. | :08:47.
for the Under`19 Cricket World Cup. The team behind one of the | :08:48. | :08:55.
Channel Islands longest running carnival week is looking for a new | :08:56. | :08:57.
committee to organise the event. Alderney Week has been running | :08:58. | :09:00.
since 1948, but those in charge want One | :09:01. | :09:04.
of the group's newest recruits says organising the festival, which sees | :09:05. | :09:08.
the islands population double to There is a lot to organise and I am | :09:09. | :09:22.
learning that this year with the current Alderney week team who have | :09:23. | :09:26.
done an amazing job for such a long time. I am just learning how to pull | :09:27. | :09:30.
everything together and all the volunteers who have two thank and | :09:31. | :09:33.
pulling so we have a lot of challenges but we will overcome them | :09:34. | :09:38.
and be fine because they pull it off every year brilliantly. Will the | :09:39. | :09:44.
weather last? Good evening. On this Day 100 years | :09:45. | :09:48.
ago the start of the First World War, the weather had started to | :09:49. | :09:54.
change as well. This was early morning on the 4th of August 1914 | :09:55. | :09:59.
when no pressure had taken over the United Kingdom. Quite a change in | :10:00. | :10:02.
the weather because the summer previously had been pretty good. | :10:03. | :10:06.
Showers continued into the following day. We have low pressure which will | :10:07. | :10:10.
be a feature of the weather tomorrow and on Wednesday and low pressure | :10:11. | :10:14.
will be the feature of the weather this week. By Wednesday we have a | :10:15. | :10:17.
weather system sweeping through early in the day that will be | :10:18. | :10:22.
replaced by fine conditions but the risk of showers. Showers are | :10:23. | :10:27.
possible tomorrow. Some sunshine is likely and a similar temperature to | :10:28. | :10:32.
what we have been used to. Overnight tonight there will be lengthy clear | :10:33. | :10:37.
spells to start with but more clout developing towards dawn. That could | :10:38. | :10:42.
bring us showers and a temperature of 14 degrees inland. Tomorrow | :10:43. | :10:45.
expect the showers to be around in the morning. In the afternoon it is | :10:46. | :10:51.
mainly dry with sunny spells and temperatures between 18 and 20. The | :10:52. | :10:55.
risk of showers developing towards the end of the afternoon and the | :10:56. | :10:58.
risk of persistent rain overnight and into Wednesday. On Wednesday | :10:59. | :11:08.
itself it should be done so Wednesday is dry with sunny spells. | :11:09. | :11:13.
Thursday is similar with a lot of clouds around and on Friday quite a | :11:14. | :11:17.
big change. We have a new area of low pressure that could bring more | :11:18. | :11:21.
persistent rain at the end of the week. It will turn a lot more windy | :11:22. | :11:25.
in the forthcoming weekend with low`pressure dictating whether on | :11:26. | :11:30.
Saturday and Sunday. Night`time temperatures should be no lower than | :11:31. | :11:36.
13 or 14 and the daytime should be up to 21. I leave you with a summary | :11:37. | :11:40.
for tomorrow. Thank you very much. That is it. I | :11:41. | :11:47.
will be back tomorrow at 6:30am. From all of us, thank you for | :11:48. | :11:49.
watching. Quite a fresh evening out there this | :11:50. | :12:14.
evening. It's going to turn chilly in a few spots by the early hours of | :12:15. | :12:20.
Tuesday. Underneath the clear, calm, tranquil conditions... Not | :12:21. | :12:24.
completely clear because there are a few showers. You may have been | :12:25. | :12:28.
caught out in some across the South today. After midnight, you can see | :12:29. | :12:32.
the vast majority of the UK has dry weather, whereas Cornwall, Devon, | :12:33. | :12:39.
just about nudging into Wales, possibly Northern Ireland and the | :12:40. | :12:41.
south-west of Scotland, a few showers. But clear skies is the | :12:42. | :12:46.
story tonight. Colder in rural spots. The Glens of Scotland, really | :12:47. | :12:50.
nippy | :12:51. | :12:52. |
