Good evening. continues. The dream shall never | :00:00. | :00:12.
91 jobs at risk as Channel Islands Co`op moves | :00:13. | :00:14.
We could secure daily deliveries, and better shelf life for product | :00:15. | :00:28.
is, also a broader range and secure some cost efficiencies. | :00:29. | :00:31.
From little acorns grow great jobs ` how disabled islanders are being | :00:32. | :00:34.
And the Canadian connection ` the brothers separated | :00:35. | :00:38.
by thousands of miles and 60 years are finally reunited. | :00:39. | :00:52.
The Channel Island Co`op is closing its warehouses in Guernsey | :00:53. | :00:55.
In future, all of its food will be stored in Andover | :00:56. | :00:59.
The Co`op were the only large retailer still to | :01:00. | :01:06.
81 jobs will go, and ten more if plans to close Total | :01:07. | :01:12.
Alison Moss has been speaking to the chief executive, Colin MacClead. | :01:13. | :01:20.
And difficult day for Co`op workers in the Channel Islands with news | :01:21. | :01:26.
that their jobs are at risk. With me is the Chief Executive of the Co`op | :01:27. | :01:32.
Channel Islands. More than 80 jobs are at risk. Will the end | :01:33. | :01:36.
redundancy? We sincerely hope not. Today is | :01:37. | :01:40.
about supporting our colleagues through this process, advising them | :01:41. | :01:44.
of all the redeployment and retraining opportunities that we | :01:45. | :01:46.
have a and hopefully moving them into other positions. | :01:47. | :01:53.
Why is this needed? Looking at the opportunities | :01:54. | :01:57.
presented by an ultramodern warehouse opening in the south coast | :01:58. | :02:01.
last year, it became apparent that we could secure daily fresh food | :02:02. | :02:06.
deliveries instead of the two or three times a week they are coming | :02:07. | :02:11.
now. A better shelf life products, and a broader range, and also some | :02:12. | :02:17.
efficiencies. Things customers have been asking us to do. | :02:18. | :02:22.
From a customer perspective it seems good, but they will say, what | :02:23. | :02:25.
happens when the boat does not come in? | :02:26. | :02:29.
We are acutely conscious of that by a community we tailor owned and run | :02:30. | :02:33.
by Channel Islander 's. We are pleased to say that we have | :02:34. | :02:39.
negotiated an air freight to kick in during period of extended ferry | :02:40. | :02:42.
disruption. Colin MacLeod, thank you for joining | :02:43. | :02:47.
us. It is hoped that all changes will be in place by next summer. | :02:48. | :02:50.
Flybe?s sudden decision to stop its weekday flights from Guernsey | :02:51. | :02:53.
to Southampton in just two weeks? time has been | :02:54. | :02:56.
Flybe ten to be quite expensive anyway. | :02:57. | :03:11.
A bit shocked, because for those people who have booked in advance it | :03:12. | :03:15.
will be dis` organising to make new arrangements. | :03:16. | :03:20.
They cancel flights from Southampton quite often as well, that could | :03:21. | :03:23.
create problems. The airline flies four times | :03:24. | :03:26.
a day to Southampton. Blue Islands will continue to fly | :03:27. | :03:28.
the route, but travel agents say not being able to connect into the Flybe | :03:29. | :03:31.
network will hit Look at how business travel is | :03:32. | :03:40.
normally booked, we really do need to be linked in with online | :03:41. | :03:43.
partners. So that we have other airlines linking in with our | :03:44. | :03:46.
carriers. Police in Thailand have brought | :03:47. | :03:49.
in more officers to try to find who murdered Jersey man David Miller | :03:50. | :03:52.
and Hannah Witheridge from Norfolk. There are now around 150 | :03:53. | :03:54.
officers hunting their killers. But the investigation seems to be | :03:55. | :03:57.
going nowhere at the moment, with Thai Police admitting they | :03:58. | :04:00.
don't have a suspect. Almost five days since 24`year`old | :04:01. | :04:02.
Jerseyman David Miller and 23`year`old Hannah Witheridge were | :04:03. | :04:09.
brutally beaten and killed in Koh Forensic tests on | :04:10. | :04:11.
Hannah Witheridge's body suggest at least two attackers, but police | :04:12. | :04:18.
haven't found a match yet despite extensive DNA testing of people | :04:19. | :04:22.
across the island of Koh Tao. Meanwhile, it's been reported that | :04:23. | :04:27.
local people are devastated by what happened and have raised money | :04:28. | :04:31.
for a reward to find the killers. 50,000 Baht ` which is | :04:32. | :04:36.
about ?1,000 ` is being offered for any information which leads to | :04:37. | :04:39.
the murderers being caught. The bodies of David Miller | :04:40. | :04:42.
and Hannah Witheridge have now been moved from a forensic hospital | :04:43. | :04:46.
in Bangkok and plans are being made by the Thai | :04:47. | :04:49.
foreign ministry to get them home. There's a strong indication | :04:50. | :04:54.
family allowance in Guernsey It's currently paid to all parents, | :04:55. | :04:56.
but the Social Security Minister It comes after | :04:57. | :05:02.
the department announced it wants to increase benefits such as pensions | :05:03. | :05:07.
by 2.1% from next year, but keep We have chosen to freeze that this | :05:08. | :05:18.
year cos there are clear indications that in the longer term some of the | :05:19. | :05:25.
what we call universal benefits, benefits and apply regardless of who | :05:26. | :05:30.
you are, will be certainly reduced, and may even in the long term be | :05:31. | :05:31.
phased out. 90 people with disabilities will | :05:32. | :05:33.
staff a new recycling scheme which it's hoped will cut Jersey's | :05:34. | :05:35.
wood wastage by 100 tonnes a year. The Acorn Woodshack takes wood | :05:36. | :05:38.
destined for the incinerator and turns it into building timber, | :05:39. | :05:40.
kindling and even furniture. Trevor and his colleagues are | :05:41. | :05:51.
cutting wood into kindling. Their job is to make sure every part of | :05:52. | :05:55.
the wood that arrives here is used to. Trevor is one of around 90 | :05:56. | :06:00.
people with disabilities or long`term health conditions working | :06:01. | :06:04.
here. Without them it would not run. | :06:05. | :06:07.
Edison to look forward to, and something to work on. You are | :06:08. | :06:12.
recycling, not just dumping would for the sake of dumping it. | :06:13. | :06:17.
That is the idea. Over six months this nursery has been transformed | :06:18. | :06:25.
into The Acorn Woodshack. The wood is Dean Nield, cleaned and put into | :06:26. | :06:31.
use. We have to come up with an | :06:32. | :06:35.
efficiency idea, and we came up with this. Huang Zhenyu the amount of | :06:36. | :06:40.
waste that was going into the incinerator, so we had into that, | :06:41. | :06:45.
did the research, and the idea snowballed from there. | :06:46. | :06:50.
A big part of the scheme is not just to recycle, but also to up cycle. | :06:51. | :06:59.
This dresser is worth a lot more than its sale price. | :07:00. | :07:04.
You'd be surprised at the things people throw, really valuable items | :07:05. | :07:07.
of furniture they just need maybe a new handle on some TLC and they are | :07:08. | :07:13.
good to go again. Loads of skills, and loads of areas where our clients | :07:14. | :07:17.
can be involved. At the moment around 230 tonnes of | :07:18. | :07:22.
wood is burned in Jersey's incinerator. It is hoped that after | :07:23. | :07:26.
company Mike opens to islanders tomorrow, that figure will be | :07:27. | :07:32.
reduced to. `` after The Acorn Woodshack opens. | :07:33. | :07:34.
Delving into your family history can uncover some remarkable stories, | :07:35. | :07:36.
and that really was the case for Guernsey man Duncan Cumming. | :07:37. | :07:39.
Having found out he had a brother, he then discovered they had been | :07:40. | :07:42.
And just back from a trip to Canada, where he grew up, | :07:43. | :07:46.
there were more surprises along the way, as Penny Elderfield reports. | :07:47. | :07:50.
Adopted at birth, after two decades of researching his biological | :07:51. | :07:58.
family, last year Duncan had a real breakthrough. | :07:59. | :08:04.
This is the e`mail I received of an organisation in Ottawa, and she | :08:05. | :08:08.
wrote that I have some interesting and happy news, "I have managed to | :08:09. | :08:16.
locate your brother, and his name, Ronald David Cole. " I said my wife, | :08:17. | :08:23.
I knew a man of that name I went to school. Weaver brothers, but we did | :08:24. | :08:29.
not know we were brothers. They hadn't seen each other in 60 | :08:30. | :08:34.
years. We decided that we got to get | :08:35. | :08:37.
together soon as we could, and the most convenient time was just last | :08:38. | :08:43.
month. It was a visit which caught the | :08:44. | :08:47.
attention of the media they are. Cameras looked on as they were | :08:48. | :08:51.
reunited for the first time. I haven't seen you in 60 years, and | :08:52. | :08:55.
I am still the best looking one. No, you are not! | :08:56. | :09:00.
The media interest also added to this story. | :09:01. | :09:07.
We ask the editor if we could put in a blurb about our Diane, sister who | :09:08. | :09:12.
were still looking for. She was never married but had some. A former | :09:13. | :09:18.
neighbour saw this article and e`mailed us, and that's how we got | :09:19. | :09:22.
to meet as well. She never knew that she had any siblings at all. | :09:23. | :09:28.
It's the best day of my life. I wouldn't want anything else but | :09:29. | :09:32.
these two. Already planning a trip to guarantee | :09:33. | :09:35.
next year, Duncan and Ron van on staying in touch and rekindling the | :09:36. | :09:39.
friendship that started decades ago. | :09:40. | :09:42.
A final summery BBQ weekend perhaps, and dragon boating for some. | :09:43. | :09:49.
Just a small chance of a few showers but generally we are all right. As | :09:50. | :10:03.
it moves into Sunday it will feel fresher with less humidity so | :10:04. | :10:07.
perhaps feeling cooler, to. A small risk of a few showers and if they do | :10:08. | :10:13.
occur will be overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow. Not many | :10:14. | :10:17.
of them, and it will be like. It looks like the weather is OK for the | :10:18. | :10:21.
race tomorrow. North`east winds which will be light. Perhaps misty | :10:22. | :10:26.
at times, some haze around, but it should be dry and pleasantly warm. | :10:27. | :10:32.
The satellite picture shows the cloud that is covering most of this | :10:33. | :10:37.
corner of Europe, stretching from Scotland all the way down to Spain | :10:38. | :10:42.
and Portugal. This is an area of low pressure. It has extended itself | :10:43. | :10:45.
across southern parts of Britain at the moment. This is the middle of | :10:46. | :10:49.
the day tomorrow when things retreat, this cold weather front by | :10:50. | :10:54.
the time and gets to us will be a very weak they are. It then slips so | :10:55. | :11:01.
and will lie over mid`France by the middle of the day on Sunday. Behind | :11:02. | :11:05.
it you will see fresher and cooler air, so perhaps my time temperatures | :11:06. | :11:14.
coming down. Tonight is denied. `` tonight is muggy. Overnight it is | :11:15. | :11:23.
dry, there may be a few showers around Guernsey, but not many. For | :11:24. | :11:28.
the most part dry, and misty night. Tomorrow is largely dry, a small | :11:29. | :11:37.
chance of a few showers. Quite a lot of cloud, but the sunshine make | :11:38. | :11:40.
breakthrough in the afternoon, temperatures between 20 and 22 | :11:41. | :11:48.
Celsius. Here is the coastal waters forecast. And the times of high | :11:49. | :12:02.
water. Here's how things look into next week. And misty start on | :12:03. | :12:07.
Sunday, but brightening up and feeling fresher. Fine and dry but | :12:08. | :12:10.
cooler on Monday and Tuesday. We can cling to some are a little | :12:11. | :12:19.
longer. That is the news and weather from the Channel Islands. Coming up, | :12:20. | :12:22.
Spotlight. One of the things we have been | :12:23. | :12:41.
campaigning for for a long time is a Cornish assembly with real powers. | :12:42. | :12:44.
That is one of the things that this can give an opportunity to. There is | :12:45. | :12:49.
a risk that we would be seen as just another English region, one of the | :12:50. | :12:53.
things we need to be sure that Cornwall's voice is heard so that | :12:54. | :12:59.
that is not... With those powers comes responsibility. If you're | :13:00. | :13:03.
modelling yourself on Scotland and Wales, that would mean control of | :13:04. | :13:06.
the NHS, fisheries policy, is Cornwall big enough to do that? | :13:07. | :13:11.
Cornwall is big enough and is the right place to do that. I was down | :13:12. | :13:16.
in Mebyon Kernow earlier today, and fishermen of Cornwall know best how | :13:17. | :13:18.
to control the fisheries of Cornwall. And in conjunction with | :13:19. | :13:23.
our fellow fishermen in Brittany and northern Spain, we can probably | :13:24. | :13:28.
manage better than ministers from London, Paris and Madrid. Does your | :13:29. | :13:35.
party have the support to do this? Not gaining that support at general | :13:36. | :13:40.
elections, just a few councillors. It is about what people want. People | :13:41. | :13:46.
will vote for something. Not at the moment when you are offering it? The | :13:47. | :13:53.
democratic system means that they are going to vote for the least | :13:54. | :13:58.
worst, rather than the best, getting in. Thoughts on the way forward have | :13:59. | :14:04.
been taken up by a lot of people, and we keep hearing about people on | :14:05. | :14:08.
the ground who are saying, yes, we need a real Cornish assembly with | :14:09. | :14:12.
real powers. Thank you very much. We are also joined by Sarah Wollaston, | :14:13. | :14:19.
the MP for tartness. `` the MP for Totnes. You do not want to see lots | :14:20. | :14:28.
of powers brought to Devon? I do not go around the constituency hearing | :14:29. | :14:31.
people called for more politicians. The problem with regional | :14:32. | :14:38.
governments and wider devolution is that you spend a lot of money | :14:39. | :14:41.
setting up structures and be a rock receipt, and that money is best | :14:42. | :14:46.
spent on people who need support `` and bureaucracy. Would this not be | :14:47. | :14:54.
more powers, would this not be a vote winner for you? I don't think | :14:55. | :15:00.
so. I don't think more bureaucracy is a vote winner. We need to have | :15:01. | :15:06.
more powers devolved down to local government, but to set up new | :15:07. | :15:09.
structures is the wrong approach. We need to answer the West Lothian | :15:10. | :15:12.
question, English MPs voting on English laws. I do think there is a | :15:13. | :15:22.
case for getting the level right. We want to have more decision`making | :15:23. | :15:25.
devolved to local level, but we have to be careful if we're looking at | :15:26. | :15:29.
setting up new structures and assemblies. That is not the best use | :15:30. | :15:35.
of the money. It has not worked so far. It was first proposed in the | :15:36. | :15:39.
1998 Conservative Party Conference. An English assembly has not got off | :15:40. | :15:43.
the ground? I think the time is right. It is fun to stick that | :15:44. | :15:48.
Scotland has decided to stay part of the union, `` it is fantastic. We | :15:49. | :15:56.
need to make sure that we look at things like the Barnett formula, it | :15:57. | :16:02.
is because of the Barnett formula that every person on average has | :16:03. | :16:07.
?203 more to spend on health am a far more to spend on other services | :16:08. | :16:11.
through local councils. It is time to review how that formula works so | :16:12. | :16:16.
we can factor on things like sparsity in x areas and that we have | :16:17. | :16:21.
an older population. `` in rural population. MPs can be lobbying for | :16:22. | :16:30.
change and making the case for fairness. We want an older person | :16:31. | :16:37.
with care and health needs in rural Devon to have the same treatment in | :16:38. | :16:40.
funding as someone in the same situation who lives in Scotland. We | :16:41. | :16:45.
need to vary formula depending on things like deprivation and poverty | :16:46. | :16:48.
to make sure we address health and equalities, but also factor in age | :16:49. | :16:55.
and sparsity in rural areas, costing a lot more to deliver services. | :16:56. | :16:59.
These are the kind of things my constituents are asking me to lobby | :17:00. | :17:03.
about. That is absolutely what I shall be doing. Thank you, and my | :17:04. | :17:10.
thanks also to Loveday Jenkin. There will be plenty more on the impact of | :17:11. | :17:13.
today's result. Students say it's insulting that | :17:14. | :17:21.
Plymouth University is spending The ceremonial seats will be used | :17:22. | :17:24.
for graduations The university says | :17:25. | :17:28.
they'll be paid for by It is all go on Plymouth Hoe, | :17:29. | :17:47.
marquees going up ahead of the University's graduation week. 25,000 | :17:48. | :17:53.
visitors are attracted, injecting ?700,000 into the city's economy. As | :17:54. | :17:56.
part of the in a trial to try and prevent | :17:57. | :19:32.
children becoming overweight. It involves bringing actors | :19:33. | :19:34.
into schools, who aim to promote This is much more fun than simply | :19:35. | :19:56.
being told not to eat junk food. Here, the children play a machine | :19:57. | :20:00.
manufacturing fizzy drinks. While this approach? In order for | :20:01. | :20:05.
behaviour change to occur you need to and J `` you need to engage | :20:06. | :20:11.
children and their appearance. That is why we need innovative delivery | :20:12. | :20:14.
methods to empower the children to come up with the answers, and they | :20:15. | :20:22.
engage with the actors. What kind of things you think she could change? | :20:23. | :20:28.
Stop drinking fizzy drinks. Has the trial had any effect on these | :20:29. | :20:34.
children? It involved reducing your screen time, which I have done. When | :20:35. | :20:42.
you look at vegetables, you think, how much sugar is in there. I have | :20:43. | :20:52.
started eating much more healthy and choosing healthier options. Grace's | :20:53. | :21:00.
mum has noticed a big difference. She is eating for green stuff. If we | :21:01. | :21:07.
have a bowl of salad on the table, she wants to take some, it on her | :21:08. | :21:14.
plate, in the past that was forced. 32 schools are taking part in the | :21:15. | :21:18.
trial, the children being weighed at the beginning and end of the | :21:19. | :21:22.
programme. There is a control group so they will be able to tell of the | :21:23. | :21:25.
experiment has worked. Other trials have not, if this one is successful, | :21:26. | :21:31.
it could be rolled out nationally. Other programmes nationally have not | :21:32. | :21:35.
made the difference, so if we do see a difference, it really will be big | :21:36. | :21:36.
news. Onto the sport now and | :21:37. | :21:39.
Exeter Chiefs' Sandy Park stadium is almost ready to host its | :21:40. | :21:42.
allocation of three Spotlight's Dave Gibbins reports | :21:43. | :21:44.
from Sandy Park with that Building work is virtually complete | :21:45. | :22:00.
at Sandy Park for next year's Rugby World Cup. The capacity has | :22:01. | :22:05.
increased to 12,500, and ?1 million has been invested on the pitch. 20% | :22:06. | :22:10.
is made up of synthetic fibres which will bind together the authentic | :22:11. | :22:14.
grass, preventing flooding and winter wear. The aim was to get most | :22:15. | :22:20.
of the work done by some are ready for the World Cup. We have had a few | :22:21. | :22:27.
minor alterations which we will do next summer, but there will be no | :22:28. | :22:34.

photograph, the main part is behind my head, I am going to move. The | :24:27. | :24:35.
shot of lightning over Dartmoor. Pretty lively showers, not | :24:36. | :24:39.
everywhere, most of us got away with dry weather through the night. We | :24:40. | :24:43.
are likely to see a few more showers tomorrow, but in a different place, | :24:44. | :24:48.
perhaps along the south coast. This weekend turns cooler. We will start | :24:49. | :24:53.
to see fine weather returned, but still muggy and misty and humid. The | :24:54. | :24:59.
problems we have had with low cloud and mist, mainly around Cornwall and | :25:00. | :25:03.
the Isles of Scilly. That has not changed. Low pressure still around | :25:04. | :25:08.

across us, this high pressure, and we will return to fine weather on | :25:19. | :25:22.

earlier today, some of the low cloud has been around for the early part | :25:33. | :25:36.
of the afternoon. This was earlier in the day. A little bit of hazy | :25:37. | :25:43.
sunshine, but notice how hazy the areas, a lot of moisture in the air | :25:44. | :25:48.
at the moment. There is a bit more of that mist and fog to come | :25:49. | :25:52.
overnight as well as mist and fog forming inland. Where are the | :25:53. | :25:56.
sunshine came through, it has felt very pleasant today. Temperatures of | :25:57. | :26:04.
21, 20 two Celsius. More of that mist to come overnight, low cloud | :26:05. | :26:08.
returning as well. We will not see too many in the way of showers, we | :26:09. | :26:12.
will get away with a largely dry night. Tomorrow morning, slightly | :26:13. | :26:16.
cooler than it has been, still unusually mild for a night`time | :26:17. | :26:22.
temperature, 14`16. Misty and murky, low cloud and Mr Slaughter cleared | :26:23. | :26:25.
through the day. It will eventually clear `` low cloud and mist slow to | :26:26. | :26:35.
clear. A line of showers will for on the south coast, sharp showers | :26:36. | :26:40.
developing over the course of the afternoon tomorrow. Temperatures | :26:41. | :26:43.
similar to what we have been used to. 22, possibly 23. For the rowing, | :26:44. | :26:54.
