That's all from me. You can see more on the BBC News Channel. Stay with | :00:00. | :00:00.
us on BBC One, time for the news where you are. Good night. | :00:00. | :00:12.
Good evening. The number of estate agents on the capital's high streets | :00:13. | :00:26.
is on the rise, with branches taking up as much as a third of shop space | :00:27. | :00:30.
in some areas. Local traders say it's forcing them out because they | :00:31. | :00:33.
can't afford the rents. Emma North has more. | :00:34. | :00:35.
Part of London which likes to shun the city, Barnes boosts plenty of | :00:36. | :00:38.
small businesses, a sense of community and estate agents. Lots | :00:39. | :00:41.
and lots of them. At the last count there were 15 branches on this | :00:42. | :00:45.
street alone. On for 850 and got a million. There was nothing special | :00:46. | :00:49.
about the property. It's certainly made business keener. We like the | :00:50. | :00:57.
competition. There is nothing better than selling a property that is | :00:58. | :01:00.
maybe on with multi`agents and you have sold it. Or there is nothing | :01:01. | :01:03.
better than when my manager comes in from a valuation and chucks us the | :01:04. | :01:07.
keys and she has been up against six other agents. It is a great feeling. | :01:08. | :01:11.
And with the lack of houses coming on the market, offers of hundreds of | :01:12. | :01:14.
thousands of pounds above the asking price aren't unheard of. There is a | :01:15. | :01:17.
domino effect. The high prices paid for properties around here mean the | :01:18. | :01:20.
estate agents make bigger profits. They are able to pay higher rent and | :01:21. | :01:23.
landlords around here are putting their prices up, too. And as a | :01:24. | :01:26.
result, small businesses are finding it harder to survive. Business may | :01:27. | :01:31.
be swift today but local firms are all too aware of how tough things | :01:32. | :01:36.
might get. It doesn't bring people into Barnes, does it? You know, you | :01:37. | :01:40.
come to Barnes because you want to come shopping, not to look in estate | :01:41. | :01:44.
agents. It is perhaps no surprise that Barnes is such a hot spot but | :01:45. | :01:48.
here in Walthamstow they are popping up, too. Right across London, in | :01:49. | :01:54.
fact. Although if there is any sign of a downturn, estate agents could | :01:55. | :01:58.
go as quickly as they arrive. There is just not enough business to go | :01:59. | :02:03.
around for everybody. People need to think very carefully who they choose | :02:04. | :02:06.
to sell or let their homes. It's a very serious business. But recent | :02:07. | :02:10.
history shows that once prices rise, they don't go down. Even though the | :02:11. | :02:13.
agents are changing the very areas they are trying to sell. | :02:14. | :02:23.
Doreen Lawrence, the mother of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence | :02:24. | :02:26.
could stand as Labour's candidate for the next London mayoral | :02:27. | :02:31.
elections in two years time. Party insiders hinted today that talks | :02:32. | :02:34.
have been taking place about formally approaching Baroness | :02:35. | :02:36.
Lawrence to stand in 2016. Marc Ashdown reports. She spent 18 years | :02:37. | :02:41.
fighting for justice after her son's murder. Could Doreen Lawrence now | :02:42. | :02:46.
take on London's top job? Labour appears to think so. Writing in a | :02:47. | :02:49.
newspaper today, policy co`ordinator, Jon Cruddas, wrote, | :02:50. | :02:52.
"She's a class act and going from strength`to`strength. People at | :02:53. | :02:55.
Westminster are starting to tip her as a potential mayor for our capital | :02:56. | :02:58.
city. Now that is an interesting idea." Just this week, Doreen | :02:59. | :03:07.
Lawrence was named in a poll as the most powerful woman in the country. | :03:08. | :03:11.
It is easy to see how she could be a popular choice. She wasn't available | :03:12. | :03:14.
for a comment today but a source told us that no formal approach has | :03:15. | :03:17.
been made but they wouldn't comment on whether informal talks have been | :03:18. | :03:20.
held. So, would Londoners vote for her? I would vote for her anyway, if | :03:21. | :03:28.
she did it, I would do it. She is amazing, isn't she? Really amazing. | :03:29. | :03:35.
It is about time there was more non`white representation for London. | :03:36. | :03:38.
The job would put her in charge of the Met Police. A slightly awkward | :03:39. | :03:40.
position, perhaps, though she would, say some, be an interesting and | :03:41. | :03:43.
refreshing candidate. A lot of people respect her across the | :03:44. | :03:46.
political spectrum. The job is complex, it covers more than just | :03:47. | :03:49.
policing, for which she's best well`known. ?17 billion a year | :03:50. | :03:52.
spending but ?11 billion on transport plus hundreds of millions | :03:53. | :03:55.
of pounds on housing and like all candidates, I think people would be | :03:56. | :03:58.
looking for her to put a wide view across on what she would do at City | :03:59. | :04:03.
Hall. Many still see the hugely popular former Olympics minister, | :04:04. | :04:05.
Tessa Jowell, as the most likely Labour candidate but party insiders | :04:06. | :04:08.
describe Baroness Lawrence as an influential and dynamic campaigner, | :04:09. | :04:10.
who could have that broad appeal needed to win over Londoners and win | :04:11. | :04:12.
back City Hall. Let's get a check on tomorrow's | :04:13. | :04:23.
weather now. Fine and dry during the day means | :04:24. | :04:32.
fairly cold at night. The clear skies mean the temperatures dropping | :04:33. | :04:36.
to single figures. It means tomorrow morning blue sky and sunshine. A bit | :04:37. | :04:40.
of a north`westerly breeze. Maybe some fair`weather cloud tomorrow | :04:41. | :04:43.
afternoon but still feeling warm with a maximum of 15. High pressure | :04:44. | :04:47.
stays with us for the next few days. Warm, dry and sunny during the day | :04:48. | :04:51.
but chilly during the night. That's T we will be back tomorrow | :04:52. | :04:55.
morning. From `` that's it. We will be back tomorrow morning. From all | :04:56. | :04:56.
of us on the late team. Good night. Good evening. It was a lovely day | :04:57. | :05:11.
across many parts of the UK. 17 in the London area withshine but it was | :05:12. | :05:14.
a different story in Scotland. It | :05:15. | :05:15. |
