There is more throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel. We are back | :00:00. | :00:00.
with the latest News at ten. Now, time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Bye`bye. Good evening and welcome. A | :00:00. | :00:16.
three`day Tube strike, which was due to begin this evening, has been | :00:17. | :00:21.
suspended. Leaders of the RMT union, who met Tube managers this morning, | :00:22. | :00:24.
said they'd made significant progress in their dispute over | :00:25. | :00:29.
ticket`office closures. Let's speak now to Helen Drew, who's outside | :00:30. | :00:32.
London Underground's headquarters. Helen, good news for everyone? It is | :00:33. | :00:41.
certainly good news in the short`term, Alice. It means that we | :00:42. | :00:45.
want needs to be setting our alarm clocks any earlier to counteract | :00:46. | :00:48.
travel disruption in the morning, but this dispute is not over. London | :00:49. | :00:52.
Underground is still going to press their head with its plans to review | :00:53. | :00:56.
closing its ticket offices, and the RMT is still against it. `` press | :00:57. | :01:01.
ahead. As the bank holiday weekend comes to an end, the Tube strike | :01:02. | :01:05.
being called off is welcome news to commuters, including those enjoying | :01:06. | :01:10.
the son The Sands. I have to admit, I was thinking about planning my | :01:11. | :01:21.
travel. I am really happy about that, because it is so | :01:22. | :01:31.
inconvenient. I am very pleased: I have some meetings in town and now | :01:32. | :01:38.
we will be able to get there. The three`day strike was part of an | :01:39. | :01:42.
ongoing dispute over London Underground plans to close all | :01:43. | :01:46.
ticket offices and cut jobs, but after just 90 minutes of talks | :01:47. | :01:50.
between them and the RMT union, a decision was made not to strike. But | :01:51. | :01:53.
this doesn't mean the dispute is over. London Underground still plans | :01:54. | :02:00.
to review potential station closes. It is a very open discussion, and | :02:01. | :02:04.
what we are going to do is continue with our station by station review, | :02:05. | :02:08.
we are also going to discuss our draft implementation plan, and | :02:09. | :02:14.
beyond that we will come back to ACAS and review the findings. And | :02:15. | :02:18.
the RMT still intends to campaign against those closures. We have got | :02:19. | :02:26.
some clear and standings from London Underground in terms of how we will | :02:27. | :02:30.
move forward, allowing us to campaign to keep every booking | :02:31. | :02:33.
office open. This was the disruption caused by last week's strike over | :02:34. | :02:38.
the same issue. For the next few days at least, commuters won't have | :02:39. | :02:42.
to relive the chaos. Of course, a future strike is still | :02:43. | :02:47.
possible. What happens next is that the RMT and London Underground will | :02:48. | :02:51.
get back together for talks to be held at ACAS, the conciliation | :02:52. | :02:56.
service. And that station by station review will go ahead with the | :02:57. | :02:58.
participation of all the relevant trade unions, and that is due to be | :02:59. | :03:07.
completed by the 23rd of May. A 13`year`old boy has appeared in | :03:08. | :03:10.
court charged with a man's murder in south west London. 39`year`old | :03:11. | :03:12.
Martin Thomas was found stabbed to death at his home in Roehampton two | :03:13. | :03:16.
weeks ago. The boy, who can't be named because of his age, was | :03:17. | :03:19.
remanded in custody. Another teenager, aged 15, is also charged | :03:20. | :03:24.
with murder. Now, with immigration a central | :03:25. | :03:27.
issue in the current European election campaign, some people are | :03:28. | :03:29.
asking how best to educate those children who don't have English as | :03:30. | :03:32.
their mother tongue and what impact it has on the other pupils. The | :03:33. | :03:36.
BBC's Mike Sergeant has been to Brent, one of the most diverse | :03:37. | :03:46.
boroughs in Britain. Byron Court in northwest London, one | :03:47. | :03:49.
of the most multicultural and multilingual schools in the country. | :03:50. | :03:54.
600 children, 42 different languages. Many of these children | :03:55. | :03:59.
spoke no English at all when they arrived aged five, six, seven or | :04:00. | :04:03.
eight. Now, a few years later, their confidence is growing. It was very | :04:04. | :04:09.
hard, but I learned it in two months. You learned English in two | :04:10. | :04:13.
months? Yeah. Well, not all of the words, just some of them. When I was | :04:14. | :04:17.
two years old, I went to nursery, and then I learned a bit of English | :04:18. | :04:21.
there. And when I came here, I got to learn all my English. | :04:22. | :04:24.
This part of London has more languages spoken than all most | :04:25. | :04:27.
anywhere else in the UK, so what is the impact of all of this diversity | :04:28. | :04:33.
on educational standards at school? The guiding principle here is to | :04:34. | :04:36.
treat all children equally. Success, though, requires plenty of support | :04:37. | :04:42.
and funding. Click on one of those and tell me if | :04:43. | :04:47.
it is a source of light... There needs to be enough good | :04:48. | :04:50.
teachers to help those struggling and support the ones surging ahead. | :04:51. | :04:53.
The local council says the large number of migrant families initially | :04:54. | :04:56.
lower school standards, but not for long. In Brent, our children perform | :04:57. | :05:02.
just below national averages when they are assessed at seven years | :05:03. | :05:09.
old. But by the time they are 11, they've caught up with national | :05:10. | :05:11.
standards, and at 16 they are flying. | :05:12. | :05:16.
There's lots of research that shows being bilingual is ultimately an | :05:17. | :05:19.
advantage, but what if your child is not from a migrant family. Some | :05:20. | :05:21.
education experts have their concerns. The problem is not really | :05:22. | :05:29.
migrant children. The problem is that children who are native | :05:30. | :05:32.
speakers of English being taught alongside non`native speakers of | :05:33. | :05:34.
English, and in my experience and talking to parents, there are many | :05:35. | :05:37.
parents whose children are in classes where the majority of | :05:38. | :05:40.
children don't speak English, and they feel that their | :05:41. | :05:42.
English`speaking child is at a disadvantage. This could have | :05:43. | :05:44.
long`term and very serious social consequences. | :05:45. | :05:48.
And with immigration an increasingly important political issue, the | :05:49. | :05:50.
educational challenges making the system work for all children, | :05:51. | :05:51.
whatever their backgrounds. Mike Sergeant there. Now let's take | :05:52. | :06:03.
a look at the weather with Sara Thornton. | :06:04. | :06:07.
Hello. A lovely bank holiday weekend has been rounded off today with the | :06:08. | :06:11.
best of the temperatures, a beautiful bank holiday Monday, | :06:12. | :06:14.
another fairly nice day tomorrow, quite breezy but eventually some | :06:15. | :06:19.
sunny spells. Through the day today, temperatures up in the high teens, | :06:20. | :06:23.
but some high cloud advancing from the West courtesy of this frontal | :06:24. | :06:27.
system. That is marching towards us through this evening and the first | :06:28. | :06:29.
part of the night, and then it will give us some rain in the early hours | :06:30. | :06:33.
of tomorrow morning before it makes its way towards the east. Tomorrow | :06:34. | :06:36.
morning, some cloud around, temperatures up in double figures, | :06:37. | :06:42.
the breeze does pick up through the next 24 hours. 17 Celsius with sunny | :06:43. | :06:46.
spells in the afternoon, perhaps 18 in 12 spots. Through the week, we | :06:47. | :06:51.
run the risk of some showers, breezy but sunshine. | :06:52. | :06:53.
That's all for now, I'll be back during the ten o'clock news, but for | :06:54. | :06:57.
now, from everyone here, have a lovely evening. Goodbye. | :06:58. | :07:09.
The sunshine today for the bank holiday produced the highest | :07:10. | :07:13.
temperature of the | :07:14. | :07:14. |
