Good evening. Welcome to the programme. A school in East London | :00:13. | :00:17.
is set to become the first in the country to soak a judicial review `` | :00:18. | :00:22.
seek a judicial review to stop the Government converting it to an | :00:23. | :00:26.
academy. The Warren school wants to stay with the local authority. The | :00:27. | :00:29.
majority of parents agree. However the Department for Education said | :00:30. | :00:35.
this week, the move should go ahead. Shakespeare doesn't just reveal love | :00:36. | :00:38.
through words, he does it through structure as well. This year ten | :00:39. | :00:44.
English class learn about these star crossed lovers, staff at the school | :00:45. | :00:48.
feel they're living out their own tragedy. Are you ready to feed back? | :00:49. | :00:52.
The school was placed in special measures by Ofsted last year. The | :00:53. | :00:57.
Education Secretary Michael Gove decided to take the school out of | :00:58. | :01:01.
the hands of the local council, by turning it into an academy. The | :01:02. | :01:05.
school and council have been fighting the plan. They were given | :01:06. | :01:09.
hope in January, when the High Court granted an injunction preventing the | :01:10. | :01:15.
move. Shortly after, an Ofsted inspection found the school was | :01:16. | :01:18.
making reasonable progress. But on Monday, the Department for Education | :01:19. | :01:23.
said the change would go ahead from September. The school and the | :01:24. | :01:27.
council are now taking action to challenge that decision. | :01:28. | :01:31.
They're applying for a judicial review. It's the first time a school | :01:32. | :01:36.
has taken the battle to this stage. They're adamant it's the right | :01:37. | :01:40.
decision for everyone. If it becomes an academy, we will see a very | :01:41. | :01:46.
different school, because it will ` this is the heart of the community. | :01:47. | :01:52.
I don't know whether people will still feel that way about the | :01:53. | :01:58.
community. The Department for Education says, "We cannot simply | :01:59. | :02:01.
stand by when a school continues to provide an unacceptable standard of | :02:02. | :02:06.
education. It is absolutely right that the Secretary of State takes | :02:07. | :02:10.
this action to bring about the best possible outcomes for pupils." (The | :02:11. | :02:15.
council will be lodging the legal papers over coming weeks and it's | :02:16. | :02:19.
clear other schools will be watch pg the case closely. | :02:20. | :02:25.
A road has been closed in south London, after a building roof | :02:26. | :02:30.
collapse. Three people were injured when the roof caved in on London | :02:31. | :02:34.
Road in norbury. Private security guards are to be | :02:35. | :02:37.
brought in to replace some of the police officers at the Houses of | :02:38. | :02:41.
Parliament. To cut costs, security screening at public entrances will | :02:42. | :02:44.
be run by a private contractor from next April. | :02:45. | :02:48.
Now thousands of cyclists brought the traffic to a halt in Central | :02:49. | :02:52.
London earlier, as they took part in a rally to get more space upon the | :02:53. | :02:57.
capital's streets. Campaigners want local councils to improve their | :02:58. | :03:00.
streets, so all Londoners, including children and the elderly can cycle | :03:01. | :03:05.
safe live. `` safely. Some of London's busiest | :03:06. | :03:10.
roads this afternoon it was cyclists only and it brought those who don't | :03:11. | :03:14.
normally brave the traffic out to play. They can't expect this sort of | :03:15. | :03:19.
space in London, they want more than they've currently got. I go quite a | :03:20. | :03:23.
long way round to use cycle lanes to get to work because I'm determined | :03:24. | :03:26.
to cycle. But it should be a lot easier. You get a lot of cyclists | :03:27. | :03:31.
cutting in and out of cars and that's where a lot of accidents | :03:32. | :03:34.
happen. When there's so many cars there isn't space. It's worse than | :03:35. | :03:38.
Paris, where I come from. I think drivers are pretty harsh on | :03:39. | :03:43.
cyclists. I really have to be super careful. Five psych tastes have died | :03:44. | :03:49.
this year in London. On Tuesday, another man was killed in a crash | :03:50. | :03:55.
with a HGV at elephant and castle. The campaigners say such deaths | :03:56. | :03:59.
could be avoided if more segregated lanes were built and infrastructure | :04:00. | :04:03.
was improved. Local authorities own the vafrt majority of London's | :04:04. | :04:06.
streets. So the timing of this here today is significant. It's ahead of | :04:07. | :04:10.
the local elections on Thursday. It's a plea to politicians to get on | :04:11. | :04:15.
board and help redesign their streets. So while the mayor says | :04:16. | :04:20.
he's spending millions on cycling infrastructure, today was about | :04:21. | :04:24.
ordinary Londoners being able to cycle safely around their | :04:25. | :04:27.
neighbourhoods. The street outside your house is properlily controlled | :04:28. | :04:31.
by your politicians. If they want to create protected space or reduce the | :04:32. | :04:36.
motor traffic, they have that in Mir power. `` their power. You can tell | :04:37. | :04:41.
them to do it. Many here are parents, their hope to be able to | :04:42. | :04:45.
cycle with children on London roads, not just when they're closed. | :04:46. | :04:49.
And tomorrow's weather: It's set to be another warm day with lots of | :04:50. | :04:53.
sunshine. Top temperature 24 Celsius. | :04:54. | :04:57.
That's it. We're back tomorrow, until then, enjoy the rest of your | :04:58. | :04:59.
weekend. Good evening. Who needs an expensive | :05:00. | :05:14.
holiday? Today at 24 degrees, Suffolk was warmer than Ibiza and | :05:15. | :05:20.
Crete. There was lots of warm sunshine to be found across England | :05:21. | :05:23.
and Wales. Of course, that hasn't been the story everywhere. Cooler | :05:24. | :05:27.
and cloudier and much wetter weather across Scotland and Northern | :05:28. | :05:29.
Ireland. More rain for western Scotland and the Northern Isles | :05:30. | :05:33.
tonight. Rain spreading further into Northern Ireland too. Some of it | :05:34. | :05:38.
will be heavy at times. Elsewhere, a dry night and warm. Lows of | :05:39. | :05:39. |
