European election results after the news where

Good evening. Welcome to BBC London News.

So, as the parties in London wait to see how they've fared in the

European elections, Labour claim their local election gains in London

show they are on track to win back key Parliamentary seats next year.

The Conservatives say they'll not prove that significant as the agenda

returns to issues like the economy and leadership.

Having lost councils like Croydon and Hammersmith and Fulham, the

Conservatives are stressing that in the one that really counts next

year, voters will have different priorities.

What we have is a position where whereby the Lib Dem vote went away

in large parts of London. Then it was a straight vote? Between us and

the Labour Party. The choice is simple, do you want Ed Miliband or

David Cameron? Number Ten. With five Labour gains, the capital eats Town

Hall map may have changed significantly. Labour was drawing

further encouragement from polling on what this would mean in marginal

seats next year. In the marginal constituencies which are currently

held by the Tories or the Lib Demes that we want to win, our sense is

that we are making progress there, and we are getting more councillors.

Little consolation anywhere for the Lib Dems who lost more than half

their 330 Communications Workers' Union sillors. Could bit a make or

break year ahead? The two big issues people in London feel angry about

are the widening gap between the rich and the rest and the fact that

most people on normal incomes can't afford housing in London. If we

could address those issues better as a Government over the next year,

we'll do much better. UKIP hoped to start following that script for

smaller parties previously written by the Lib Dems, get. A foothold in

Local Government and build from there, that happened just outside

London. But no platform to speak of

materialised inside. In 2010, we put up less than 100

candidate, more than 450 this time. If you look at the results in the

key areas, we have often come as the runner`up. These elections have made

London once again a predominantly straight two`party fight. But as the

re`election of an independent mayor in Tower Hamlets showed, there's

always scope for more. Tim Donovan is at City Hall tonight

where we are awaiting the European election results. Tim, what is the

they have started to come in over the rest of the country. It could

have happened already but for the Tower Hamlets effect, if you like.

You saw the evocative passionate scenes, there's been a knock`on

effect from a delay in the count for the mayoral race there, we there are

also recounts in the council elections, and now there are 32

boroughs, and including the city corporation, who've sent their

results in, who're collating them before declaring them. Tower Hamlets

hasn't sent theirs yet through. When they come through, a for the result,

I can tell you the Greens and the Liberal Democrats are feeling a

little uncertain about what's going to happen tonight. The Conservatives

at the moment have three seats, Labour have two, UKIP, the Greens

and Liberal Democrats have one each. I think the Liberal Democrats are

very negative about the likelihood of keeping hold of that,

particularly after we look at the results they have got in the local

elections. The Greens, the candidate when I saw her earlier was not

confident but they may pull through, the Greenst have traditionally

scored better in a pro`European city. It leaves UKIP, the question

about UKIP, they look as though they'll get an extra seat here, so

while they have not picked up that many council seats in local

elections, it looks as though streeters have made a clear

distinction and will have voted in reasonable numbers on BBC One even
