looks back at his life and career. Rik Mayall, who died this | :00:00. | :00:13.
A man who had ammonia sprayed in his face in what is thought to have been | :00:14. | :00:26.
a homophobic attack says he fears he may never see again. | :00:27. | :00:28.
He was one of three men attacked outside a nightclub in Vauxhall in | :00:29. | :00:31.
the early hours of yesterday morning. | :00:32. | :00:33.
Police are looking for a man who was caught on CCTV. | :00:34. | :00:34.
Guy Smith reports. This is the suspect police are | :00:35. | :00:43.
looking for. The assaults took place in an area south of the river in | :00:44. | :00:48.
Lambeth. Well`known for its gay night life. It was 4am, just outside | :00:49. | :00:54.
this nightclub, two men were verbally abused before being | :00:55. | :00:58.
attacked with what police believe was ammonia. A third man was sprayed | :00:59. | :01:04.
in the face, not far from here. Using such a highly toxic substance, | :01:05. | :01:09.
the victims were lucky to escape serious injury. I think it is | :01:10. | :01:14.
shocking. It is disbelief. It is a horrible thing to happen to anyone. | :01:15. | :01:22.
It's a hate crime at its worst. In London homophobic crime has gone up | :01:23. | :01:26.
by almost 7%. Apart from Westminster, Lambeth, where the | :01:27. | :01:32.
latest attack happened, has the worst record. The two incidents we | :01:33. | :01:36.
are treating as a linked incident. They are being treated as a | :01:37. | :01:42.
homophobic offence. Lambeth is a wonderful place to be. London is | :01:43. | :01:45.
said to be one of the most diverse cities in the world with a vibrant | :01:46. | :01:50.
gay clubbing scene, but there is concern that many hate crimes go | :01:51. | :01:54.
unreported whether that's verbal abuse and harassment or physical | :01:55. | :02:05.
assault. We know gay people experience hate crimes. Following | :02:06. | :02:09.
the events of the weekend, gay people around South London and | :02:10. | :02:12.
Vauxhall in particular are likely to feel concerned. | :02:13. | :02:16.
Detectives were originally looking for this man along with two female | :02:17. | :02:21.
suspects. This afternoon two women came forward and are now helping | :02:22. | :02:23.
with inquiries. The Metropolitan Police and the | :02:24. | :02:35.
Crown Prosecution Service have announced an independent review into | :02:36. | :02:38.
how the justice system handles allegations of rape. The Met | :02:39. | :02:40.
Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan`Howe, said some officers may | :02:41. | :02:42.
be "unconsciously biased" when dealing with rape cases. | :02:43. | :02:44.
Tarah Welsh is outside Scotland Yard. | :02:45. | :02:50.
This review is supposed to be an independent examination of the way | :02:51. | :02:55.
the Crown Prosecution Service and the Metropolitan Police deal with | :02:56. | :03:00.
sexual offences. Now, this is not the first review we have seen like | :03:01. | :03:04.
this. There was one back in 2010 after mistakes were made in the | :03:05. | :03:08.
investigation of rapist taxi driver, John Worboys. Now, in 2010 that | :03:09. | :03:14.
court called for better care of rape victims. So why this and why now? | :03:15. | :03:21.
Well, 80% of victims of sexual offences are believed not to come | :03:22. | :03:24.
forward and the commissioner says that shows a distrust in the justice | :03:25. | :03:31.
system. He says that some rape investigators weren't always as | :03:32. | :03:35.
sympathetic as they should be and the police didn't deal very well | :03:36. | :03:40.
with some vulnerable victims. He says things are better now than they | :03:41. | :03:44.
were 20 years ago though. We expect the findings to be announced next | :03:45. | :03:48.
year and hopefully they will shed light on how the justice system can | :03:49. | :03:52.
deal with the offences in a better way. | :03:53. | :03:59.
Inspectors have criticised an Islamic primary school in Luton | :04:00. | :04:03.
after books with fundamentalist views were found in the library. The | :04:04. | :04:06.
Olive Tree School was also judged by Ofsted as not doing enough to | :04:07. | :04:09.
promote other cultures and beliefs. It comes on the day that six | :04:10. | :04:12.
Birmingham schools were put in to special measures for failing to | :04:13. | :04:15.
protect pupils from extremism. Neil Bradford reports. | :04:16. | :04:17.
This review is supposed to be an independent examination of the | :04:18. | :04:25.
When Ofsted inspectors visited they raised a number of concerns. Today | :04:26. | :04:32.
inspectors rated this school as inadequate. Top of their concerns, | :04:33. | :04:36.
the lack of teaching about different cultures and faiths. | :04:37. | :04:40.
Claims the school reject. We have had people from the church, from | :04:41. | :04:45.
other faith communities come in to our school that teach about their | :04:46. | :04:50.
religion. Do you accept the findings? In terms of the religious | :04:51. | :04:54.
ethos of the school, we reject it. We believe it is an Islamic phobic | :04:55. | :05:05.
report. Ofsted inspectors cilt sized the `` criticised the school library | :05:06. | :05:11.
for having too few books about other religions. They say some of the | :05:12. | :05:16.
books describe fundamentalist views. This is a staff library, not a | :05:17. | :05:20.
children's library. Secondly, the books are not available to children. | :05:21. | :05:26.
Thirdly, we are they are not being ought to children. Today's report | :05:27. | :05:31.
come on the day Ofsted published its findings into allegations of | :05:32. | :05:34.
extremism at a number of schools in Birmingham. The local MP says the | :05:35. | :05:38.
timing is not helpful. I do have some concerns around Ofsted's moves | :05:39. | :05:42.
today to release the report on the same day that a major report into | :05:43. | :05:46.
the actions in Birmingham is going on. It is clear there isn't a link | :05:47. | :05:52.
between the two situations and yet in many people's minds there will be | :05:53. | :05:56.
considered to be so. Ofsted told leaders that its | :05:57. | :06:00.
curriculum must better prepare students for living in modern day | :06:01. | :06:09.
Britain. Staff should ensure library books have non`biassed views. The | :06:10. | :06:13.
school's governors say they reject the report. They are seeking legal | :06:14. | :06:22.
advice to decide their next move. That's it for now. | :06:23. | :06:27.
Time for the weather. Hello. Well, it may not feel like it right now, | :06:28. | :06:33.
but the outlook is looking dry with sunny spells, but right now, we have | :06:34. | :06:37.
got a few showery outbreaks around. They are gradually working their way | :06:38. | :06:40.
northwards. They will fade away through the night. We have a muggy | :06:41. | :06:45.
night. Temperatures down to about 13 Celsius or 14 Celsius. Now, for | :06:46. | :06:49.
tomorrow morning, to start off with, a few spots of murkiness around, but | :06:50. | :06:58.
it brightens up quickly. The showers will probably pass for the | :06:59. | :07:01.
north`west of us. It should be dry for most of us. Temperatures | :07:02. | :07:07.
reaching about 22 Celsius. They are a touch down on today's highs, but a | :07:08. | :07:12.
warm day. As high pressure starts to build on Wednesday and Thursday, we | :07:13. | :07:16.
are seeing the temperatures rise so we have got highs of 23 Celsius on | :07:17. | :07:22.
Wednesday and perhaps getting up to 25 Celsius on Thursday. So | :07:23. | :07:25.
altogether, the outlook for London this week is looking sunny for all | :07:26. | :07:32.
of us, but I'll pass you overto Jay. -- over to jay now. | :07:33. | :07:36.
Good evening, it was the warmest day of the year. Warm for some, but | :07:37. | :07:46.
thundery for others. This line of really intense thunderstorms moved | :07:47. | :07:51.
through. Large hail and gusty winds and rain as well. That moved away | :07:52. | :07:55.
and now we look towards the south and you can see the rain moving | :07:56. | :07:58.
northwards. So let's look at the cloud which is heading our way and | :07:59. | :08:04.
some of it does look really quite threatening particularly in the | :08:05. | :08:06.
south-eastern corner there. That's going to bring heavy rain. With it | :08:07. | :08:10.
the risk of thunder and lightening. The rain will move away from the | :08:11. | :08:14.
South East, and out into the North Sea, but it may linger further | :08:15. | :08:18.
north. Just moving away from the south-west and into Wales and into | :08:19. | :08:21.
Northern Ireland by dawn. Another mild night. 12 Celsius in the north | :08:22. | :08:25.
and maybe 13 Celsius or 14 Celsius in the south. To start the day | :08:26. | :08:28.
across Northern England, it's looking good. It is dry and bright, | :08:29. | :08:33.
but there will be wetter weather around | :08:34. | :08:35. |
