That it from us. We are back at 10:05. | :00:00. | :00:14.
Good evening and welcome to BBC London News. I'm Louisa Preston | :00:15. | :00:18.
A police investigation is under way after more than 1,000 people | :00:19. | :00:21.
attended an illegal rave at a former Royal Mail delivery | :00:22. | :00:25.
Nine people have been arrested and four people were taken to hospital. | :00:26. | :00:29.
Missiles, including furniture and fire extinguishers, were thrown at | :00:30. | :00:33.
police when they arrived to shut the rave down, as Gareth Furby reports. | :00:34. | :00:38.
The damage left behind in central Croydon by an unlicensed | :00:39. | :00:41.
More than 1,000 people are thought to have turned up and it | :00:42. | :00:48.
You can see people inside and hear the noise of the sound systems. | :00:49. | :01:00.
Neighbour Hash Patel feared it might be the start of a riot. | :01:01. | :01:09.
Hundreds and hundreds of people running around the street. | :01:10. | :01:12.
I was a bit concerned they might start | :01:13. | :01:14.
Then I can hear a lot of helicopters. | :01:15. | :01:19.
Police said officers entered the building at around 8,30 this | :01:20. | :01:25.
morning and several hours later people are still leaving. | :01:26. | :01:30.
But this pair didn't want to talk to us about the event. | :01:31. | :01:34.
This teenager claimed he'd been inside. | :01:35. | :01:42.
The disruption shut down a section of Croydon's tram system | :01:43. | :01:54.
and the local MP wants to know why the police didn't move in sooner. | :01:55. | :02:00.
I think there are going to be some real questions to be asked | :02:01. | :02:03.
Firstly about intelligence, did we know this was going to take place? | :02:04. | :02:07.
And then about whether the police did everything | :02:08. | :02:09.
they could to get enough resources here as quickly as possible. | :02:10. | :02:11.
Police say further arrests are likely in the coming days | :02:12. | :02:14.
as a result of serious disorder in this area. | :02:15. | :02:17.
A number of people in the crowd became violent. | :02:18. | :02:20.
Objects were thrown at police, and the window of | :02:21. | :02:22.
Six people were also taken to hospital. | :02:23. | :02:28.
Greenwich Council say they are working with the family of | :02:29. | :02:37.
Fusilier Lee Rigby and the Army to commemorate him in Woolwich. | :02:38. | :02:41.
The 25-year-old was killed in December last year | :02:42. | :02:43.
Two British Muslim converts were jailed for life in February | :02:44. | :02:48.
It comes after thousands of people signed | :02:49. | :02:51.
an online petition calling for the soldier to be given a permanent | :02:52. | :02:54.
City Hall has put forward proposals for record levels of investment | :02:55. | :03:04.
in flood protection schemes against surface water flooding. | :03:05. | :03:06.
The proposals, to be considered by the | :03:07. | :03:08.
Environment Agency over the Summer, include a range of projects in high | :03:09. | :03:11.
Jim Wheble has been looking at one example already under | :03:12. | :03:14.
The cars are absolutely submerged after God knows how much water | :03:15. | :03:26.
Surface water flooding around Brixton and Herne Hill in 2004. | :03:27. | :03:29.
It shows how dangerous sudden downpours can be | :03:30. | :03:31.
To prevent this happening again a few miles away in Dulwich Park, a | :03:32. | :03:36.
With more extreme weather events predicted, it's an issue | :03:37. | :03:39.
Surface water flooding schemes have been overlooked for many years. | :03:40. | :03:47.
But in recent years, there's been a lot more incidence of surface | :03:48. | :03:50.
water flooding and people are starting to realise that we actually | :03:51. | :03:55.
So you can see where the water is gathering now in what is | :03:56. | :04:02.
The problem is that our Victorian drains can't cope with very intense | :04:03. | :04:08.
But add to that another man-made issue, and you have a recipe | :04:09. | :04:12.
As London has become more densely populated, and more urbanised, | :04:13. | :04:20.
we've lost lots of porous surfaces all over London. | :04:21. | :04:24.
And there's less opportunity for the water to escape | :04:25. | :04:27.
so what the water is doing now is it works its way through those porous | :04:28. | :04:31.
They actually become saturated and the water just runs | :04:32. | :04:36.
Using underground storage tanks and other unobtrusive defences | :04:37. | :04:41.
thanks to this project Herne Hill soon able to cope with a one | :04:42. | :04:45.
City Hall has now proposed to the environment agency a number of | :04:46. | :04:51.
With many experts predicting if the biggest flooding threat that | :04:52. | :04:56.
Further into the long-term plan we're looking | :04:57. | :05:01.
into how we could reinforce those programs and have more saleable | :05:02. | :05:07.
urban drainage schemes brought through across the capital to manage | :05:08. | :05:10.
This project in Dulwich Park is due to finish next year. | :05:11. | :05:17.
These types of scenes in this area should be a thing of the past. | :05:18. | :05:21.
The hope is money can be fine so other places will be just | :05:22. | :05:24.
It will be a mostly dry and bright day with some sunny spells. | :05:25. | :05:36.
It will feel warm with a maximum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. | :05:37. | :05:39.
Warm sunny spells are expected to continue for the rest of the week, | :05:40. | :05:42.
but it will be rather cloudy at times and there's a chance | :05:43. | :05:45.
That's it for now but I'll be back just after 10.20pm tonight | :05:46. | :05:52.
The weather won't be far of what we experience of this weekend. Dry | :05:53. | :06:14.
weather here and there and fearing amount of sunshine. The best of | :06:15. | :06:18.
sunshine is in the West. Temperatures getting into the low | :06:19. | :06:22.
20s. Disappointingly cloudy further east. In between, a few showers | :06:23. | :06:29.
North-west Scotland and Wales, the odd sharp shower disappearing | :06:30. | :06:33.
through the night. We could see one or two light showers across East | :06:34. | :06:34.
Anglia and | :06:35. | :06:36. |
