Good night. Good evening. A police investigation

is under way after more than 1, 00 people attended an illegal rave at a

former Royal Mail delivery office in East Croydon. Nine people have been

arrested and four were taken to hospital. Missiles including

furniture and fire extinguishers were thrown at police when they

arrived to shut the rave down. Damage left behind in central

Croydon, by an unlicensed party in a disused sorting office. More than

1,000 people are thought to have turned up. It continued for most of

the night. A local resident filmed the scene.

You can see people inside and hear the noise of the sound systems.

One neighbour feared it might be the start of a riot. Hundreds and

hundreds of people running around this street. I was a bit concerned

they might start to damage the property. Then I could hear a lot of

helicopters. The police vans had flashing lights. Police say officers

entered the building at around . 30pm and several hours later people

were still leaving. This pair didn't want to talk to us about the event.

Why come here? Can you talk to us about what happened? The disruption

shut down a section of the tram system. A local MP wants to know why

the police didn't move in sooner. There'll be real questions to be

asked about that. About intelligence. Did we know this would

take place? And whether the police did everything they could to get

enough resources here. Police say further arrests are likely in the

coming days as a result of serious disorder in this area. A number of

people in the crowd became violent. Objects were thrown at police and

the window of a police vehicle wases will smashed. Six people were taken

to hospital. Two had head injuries. 30 people have been unable to return

home after a fire spread through flats in Chelmsford.

Several people have been left homeless. One neighbour had to kick

down doors to rescue others. An investigation is under way. City

Hall has put forward proposals for record level of investment in

flashing schemes. The proposals to be considered by the Environment

Agency over the summer, include a range of projects in high-risk areas

across the country. -- across the capital.

Surface water flooding around bricks on the and Herne Hill in -- Brixton

and Herne Hill in 2004. To prevent this happening again, a few miles

away in Dulwich park, a ?3.5 million project is under way. In recent

years there have been more incidents of surface flooding. People are

starting to realise we need to do more about this.

So, you can see where the water is gathering now, in what is a

representation of Dulwich park. The problem is our Victorian drains

cannot cope with intense and heavy rainfall. Add to that another man

made issue and you have a recipe for surface water flooding. As London

has become more densely pop lated afternooned more our -- populated

and more urbanised, we have lost surfaces all over London and there

is less opportunity for the water to escape. Using underwater storage

tanks, thanks to this project Herne Hill will be able to cope with a one

in a 75-year weather event. There have been a number of plans

proposed across the capital. We are looking how to re-enforce those

programmes and have more drainage schemes brought across the capital

to manage that risk of surface water flooding. This project in Dulwich

park is due to finish next year These type of scenes in this area

should become a thing of the past. The hope is money can be found so

other places will be just as protected.
