Now, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:15.
Ahmad. So, after spending years evading the | :00:16. | :00:18.
question, Boris Johnson has finally given us the answer. He will try to | :00:19. | :00:24.
stand for Parliament next year while still being Mayor of London. | :00:25. | :00:26.
Although the Prime Minister has welcomed the news, bookies have | :00:27. | :00:29.
tonight cut the odds for Mr Johnson to one day lead the Conservative | :00:30. | :00:34.
Party. But does the Mayor's plan for Parliament compromise his commitment | :00:35. | :00:37.
to London? Here's our political editor, Tim Donovan. It was the best | :00:38. | :00:45.
job around. It needed full attention. There were huge | :00:46. | :00:46.
challenges to deal with. around. It needed full attention. | :00:47. | :00:52.
There were huge challenges to deal with. Yet today official ` it is not | :00:53. | :00:56.
a job on its own that he is satisfied doing. A lots of people | :00:57. | :00:58.
will see this as a gigantic U`turn by the Mayor, because so often he's | :00:59. | :01:02.
played down or even appeared to rule out standing as an MP at this | :01:03. | :01:06.
general election. Well, he's going for it. We are not totally | :01:07. | :01:10.
surprised, but he will pay a price in terms of some people saying, when | :01:11. | :01:15.
can we believe him? He said he wanted a star player back... | :01:16. | :01:20.
Whenever Boris wants to, he'll get a warm welcome from me. The PM has | :01:21. | :01:29.
taken the Mayor at his word. Boris has been committed to Londoners and | :01:30. | :01:32.
London, and that's been demonstrated by the plans he's released around | :01:33. | :01:37.
infrastructure, the work he's doing in rebuilding the economy, and | :01:38. | :01:41.
making sure that crime continues to come down and the investment in the | :01:42. | :01:44.
city. And he is devoted to Londoners now and will be for the next few | :01:45. | :01:49.
years. But his opponents describe the move as like deserting London, | :01:50. | :01:54.
leaving incomplete the work started on signature policies like cycling, | :01:55. | :01:59.
aviation and policing reform. Perhaps most pressing of all, | :02:00. | :02:04.
addressing the acute smorj of housing. There is no question that | :02:05. | :02:10.
from here on in Boris won't be giving London attention. The we are | :02:11. | :02:16.
in the middle of a housing crisis, rents twice the level of that | :02:17. | :02:19.
outside of London. There is no question that London will suffer. | :02:20. | :02:25.
Boris has used the last six years promoting himself and his photo | :02:26. | :02:28.
opportunities. It's the Mayor who is elected in 2016 who is going to have | :02:29. | :02:33.
to move quickly to get stuff off the ground or London will be very | :02:34. | :02:38.
scratchy and difficult. And wasn't one likely problem highlighted by | :02:39. | :02:42.
the events today, speculation about his future eclipsing a big report on | :02:43. | :02:47.
London's economy and Europe done by his own senior economist. Is this | :02:48. | :02:52.
him putting his own personal career ahead of London in London. Was a | :02:53. | :02:56.
secondary consideration? It seems clear to me that the Mayor has had a | :02:57. | :03:01.
very successful time in London. He clearly has important plans in place | :03:02. | :03:05.
for London for the rest of his time as Mayor up until 2016. He also has | :03:06. | :03:10.
a strong team around him at City Hall, so he seems clear to me that | :03:11. | :03:15.
Boris is focused on London. It is a signal that he's leaving before the | :03:16. | :03:20.
job's done? It is a work in motion if you are Mayor of London. It is | :03:21. | :03:23.
object positioning the London economy not just now but for the | :03:24. | :03:28.
long`term. It is positioning himself for the longer term. | :03:29. | :03:32.
The next question to ask is where will Boris Johnson stand for MP? | :03:33. | :03:36.
Well, Uxbridge and South Ruislip is one of the most likely places, so | :03:37. | :03:39.
our political correspondent, Karl Mercer, went there to gauge the | :03:40. | :03:47.
reaction of local people. For 15 years the Randall name has dominated | :03:48. | :03:55.
Uxbridge town centre, for 125 years. John Randall is stepping aside, the | :03:56. | :04:01.
vacancy an opportunity for one of the MPs. When John stood down we | :04:02. | :04:07.
brought these out for Boris. I nearly took 'em out of the window | :04:08. | :04:11.
but this morning it has kicked off again. The one that is really | :04:12. | :04:16.
selling at the moment is Uxbridge, better than it sounds, big being up | :04:17. | :04:23.
the local area. Boris will have to get the bus. There's no tubes here | :04:24. | :04:28.
for the next fortnight. How about this local estate agent, if he is | :04:29. | :04:34.
thinking of moving in, or maybe not. He will have to win over the loexts | :04:35. | :04:39.
The idea of Boris Johnson terrifies me, so poor Uxbridge. He's great, | :04:40. | :04:43.
good fun, listens to people and gets the job done. I love him. Surely | :04:44. | :04:48.
he's got to give up being Mayor to be an MP? No he doesn't. Really? I | :04:49. | :04:54.
would be surprised if he could do both properly. John Randall | :04:55. | :04:57.
disagrees and denies he was nudged aside for blonde ambition. It was | :04:58. | :05:03.
purely my own decision. One of the reasons I decided to announce it | :05:04. | :05:07.
sooner rather than later was that I wanted the speculation out of the | :05:08. | :05:11.
way. The people of Uxbridge will know by mid September if the Mayor | :05:12. | :05:16.
will be the Tory candidate here the next election. | :05:17. | :05:20.
Let's talk to our political editor Tim Donovan. How difficult a job is | :05:21. | :05:23.
this for Boris Johnson to pull off without denting his popularity with | :05:24. | :05:29.
Londoners? I suppose it had been predicted for such a long time, | :05:30. | :05:33.
particularly at Westminster, that it wasn't altogether unexpected and | :05:34. | :05:36.
that may have softened impact. He's shown today that he's very much in | :05:37. | :05:40.
five, as he once admitted, of having his cake and eating it. For many | :05:41. | :05:45.
people that will be a problem. The business organisation, London | :05:46. | :05:49.
Chamber of Commerce, unusually direct today. It said it was a bad | :05:50. | :05:55.
decision and we needed a Mayor that can give London his un`Dwighted | :05:56. | :06:02.
attention. Some, his undivided attention. Is Uxbridge the only | :06:03. | :06:12.
realistic option to him? I think so. Uxbridge presents its own problems. | :06:13. | :06:15.
Take an issue like aviation. Aviation. Boris Johnson wants, the | :06:16. | :06:22.
logic of his plans is to close Heathrow. The local Tory council | :06:23. | :06:25.
wants to keep it open because of the jobs. You can see the hurdles ahead. | :06:26. | :06:30.
That could make an interesting discussion in any selection | :06:31. | :06:39.
There's lots of speculation about what's happening for the weekend. | :06:40. | :06:45.
Ahead of that we've got rain. Tomorrow it looks like a lovely day | :06:46. | :06:50.
for many of us. We've got a few sharp showers near Luton at the | :06:51. | :06:53.
moment. These should ease, but not without the risk of a shower | :06:54. | :06:57.
tonight. With quiet light winds we could have mist and fog as well. A | :06:58. | :07:06.
comfortable night for sleeping. Dry and bright tomorrow with sunshine. | :07:07. | :07:12.
Temperatures down. 24`25 still possible in the strong sunshine. Is | :07:13. | :07:16.
a dry night tomorrow, but there's more rain heading our way. This next | :07:17. | :07:21.
weather system comes in on Friday afternoon. There's a yellow warning | :07:22. | :07:27.
from the Met Office for that. Saturday is quieter and then Tomasz | :07:28. | :07:33.
will tell you more as we look ahead for the potential | :07:34. | :07:34.
will tell you more as we look ahead for the potential of something | :07:35. | :07:39.
stormy to head our way. Good evening to you. There's a lot | :07:40. | :07:43.
of detail to cover in tonight's weather update, so let's snap to it. | :07:44. | :07:50.
This is tomorrow. Lots of warm sunshine. There'll be cloud around | :07:51. | :07:54.
with the possibility of one or two showers. In terms of the here and | :07:55. | :07:59.
now it is quiet and tranquil out there. Light winds by the early | :08:00. | :08:05.
hours of Thursday. Mist forming here and there. Not especially | :08:06. | :08:06. |
