Andy Swiss, has the latest. That's all from us. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Don't forget, Newsnight's starting over on BBC 2 in a moment. | :00:00. | :00:00.
But now on BBC1, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:15.
Good evening from BBC London. I m Riz Lateef. | :00:16. | :00:20.
So it appears the Mayor's bhg idea of an airport in the Thames Estuary | :00:21. | :00:23.
has been rejected. City Hall says it believes | :00:24. | :00:25.
the proposal won't be on the shortlist of options being | :00:26. | :00:29.
announced by the Government's airports commission tomorrow. | :00:30. | :00:32.
It comes as a leading busindss group warned that the UK economy will | :00:33. | :00:35.
suffer unless there is a single hub airport for the capital. | :00:36. | :00:37.
Here's our Transport Correspondent Tom Edwards. | :00:38. | :00:43.
From early on, Boris Johnson has campaigned for an airport in the | :00:44. | :00:53.
estuary, tonight it is dead. City Hall suspect the plan will not be | :00:54. | :00:59.
short listed by the Governmdnt's aviation commission. Anti`expansion | :01:00. | :01:04.
campaigners say it is not a big surprise. There were two big | :01:05. | :01:08.
problems, one is that there didn't seem to be money behind it. | :01:09. | :01:14.
Secondly, it was almost certainly would have required the closing down | :01:15. | :01:18.
of Heathrow and I'm not surd any government would risk putting 7 ,000 | :01:19. | :01:24.
people out of work. Tonight City Hall called the decision sadly | :01:25. | :01:29.
short`sighted and said the commission has taken us back to the | :01:30. | :01:35.
same old failed choice. The Mayor believes it would have moved | :01:36. | :01:38.
pollution away from the caphtal but the south`east has one of the | :01:39. | :01:44.
biggest air spaces in the world `` busiest. This is a tricky issue but | :01:45. | :01:51.
it is also really important and just because something is diffictlt, you | :01:52. | :01:56.
cannot avoid it, so we need clear recommendation from Howard Davies | :01:57. | :02:00.
and we want politicians getting on with it, and ultimately we want | :02:01. | :02:06.
spades in the ground by 2020. Without this, left on the short list | :02:07. | :02:13.
are new runway for Heathrow, are another option would be to dxtend | :02:14. | :02:17.
the existing runway to allow take`offs and landings at the same | :02:18. | :02:22.
time, and another option now is for another runway at Gatwick. The | :02:23. | :02:31.
debate over if and how London's airports should be expanded has been | :02:32. | :02:36.
going on for decades, as was the case in 1971 in Buckinghamshire | :02:37. | :02:41.
expansion would be fiercely opposed by local groups. Both Heathrow and | :02:42. | :02:45.
Gatwick airports believe thdy are the best option for expansion but | :02:46. | :02:50.
the huge price tag for the dstuary was always a big hurdle. We have | :02:51. | :02:55.
said the months if not years now that this option is prohibitively | :02:56. | :02:59.
expensive and has a whole r`ft of issues with it. We think thd only | :03:00. | :03:05.
deliverable option is expanding Gatwick. An announcement is expected | :03:06. | :03:10.
tomorrow. The Mayor has said previously he will continue to fight | :03:11. | :03:14.
for that option. A final recommendation from the comlission | :03:15. | :03:23.
will be made next summer. Tom is here with reaction from Citx Hall. | :03:24. | :03:27.
The gloves have come off in City Hall, they are not happy at all | :03:28. | :03:32.
there are even questions about the role of the commission itself but I | :03:33. | :03:35.
don't think they were that surprised. The cost was the biggest | :03:36. | :03:40.
hurdle, and it also felt Boris Johnson was always on his own when | :03:41. | :03:45.
it came to making the case politically for the estuary airport. | :03:46. | :03:51.
The Tories on the London Assembly are absolutely fuming, they think | :03:52. | :03:55.
the Davies commission should be scrapped. It is the first thme I | :03:56. | :03:59.
have heard that. In a statelent they said with a budget of 20 | :04:00. | :04:06.
million it is heading down ` blind alley whilst wasting cash and the | :04:07. | :04:09.
Government should pull the plug On the other hand, opposition | :04:10. | :04:14.
politicians will say the Maxor has wasted ?5 million of money promoting | :04:15. | :04:21.
what they call a folly. We will get a lot more of this tomorrow. | :04:22. | :04:43.
Correspondent Tom Edwards. The Metropolitan Police has released | :04:44. | :04:46.
new CCTV footage of the so`called Plebgate incident in Downing Street | :04:47. | :04:49.
which led to the resignation of Andrew Mitchell as chief whip. | :04:50. | :04:51.
The officer in charge of the investigation said it was | :04:52. | :04:54.
the first time the material could be published, because of crhminal | :04:55. | :04:56.
and disciplinary proceedings. Chris Rogers has more | :04:57. | :04:57.
and joins us from Whitehall. The claims over what happendd here | :04:58. | :05:01.
cost four police officers their jobs following disciplinary action over | :05:02. | :05:04.
their obligations and leaks to the press. One of those officers were | :05:05. | :05:08.
sent to prison for lying about being here that night and what he | :05:09. | :05:13.
witnessed. The controversy has led to the step of The Met Police | :05:14. | :05:19.
producing a lengthy report, and with it some unseen CCTV footage showing | :05:20. | :05:23.
Andrew Mitchell with his bike making his way to the main gate. Dtring an | :05:24. | :05:29.
exchange with police officers, we can only assume he has been told he | :05:30. | :05:35.
has got to use the side exit. As he makes his way to that gate, Mr | :05:36. | :05:39.
Mitchell admitted he swore `t the officers but denies calling them | :05:40. | :05:52.
plebs. The CCTV did not havd sound, but it was accepted the footage | :05:53. | :05:58.
backs up claims, and some mdmbers of the public crossing at the time were | :05:59. | :06:02.
visibly shocked by what thex heard. Friends of Mr Mitchell says the | :06:03. | :06:08.
report backs up their belief, that the police officers went out of | :06:09. | :06:12.
their way to mislead the investigation to reinforce their | :06:13. | :06:16.
views of what happened that night. This report will help win b`ck | :06:17. | :06:20.
public trust but there is only one concrete conclusion to this, and | :06:21. | :06:25.
that is that there were no winners in what became known as the Plebgate | :06:26. | :06:33.
incident. Time for me to wish you a good night and hand you over to | :06:34. | :06:37.
Wendy for a look at the weather forecast. We got off to a grey and | :06:38. | :06:43.
damp start to September but the rest of this week is not looking bad It | :06:44. | :06:49.
will be largely dry and there will be some sunshine around as well | :06:50. | :06:53.
There are some showers lingdring across Kent, but that moves away | :06:54. | :07:00.
leaving a clear sky. Elsewhdre, we will see some low cloud and possibly | :07:01. | :07:06.
fog drifting in. It is a possibility it will cause some problems to | :07:07. | :07:10.
travel tomorrow so keep up`to`date on the radio station with any | :07:11. | :07:14.
further developments of that. Through the day tomorrow we will see | :07:15. | :07:19.
that low cloud lifting up and we will see Sunny spells through the | :07:20. | :07:23.
afternoon coming and going. It will also feel warmer with temperatures | :07:24. | :07:29.
reaching 23 degrees in central London. On Wednesday and Thtrsday it | :07:30. | :07:36.
will also feel fairly warm, and the cloud will make a difference to the | :07:37. | :07:41.
temperature as Matt Taylor explains. Good evening. If you have left it | :07:42. | :07:46.
late for your summer break this year, the weather will probably be | :07:47. | :07:51.
kind to you. Most places will be dry and it will be fairly warm as well. | :07:52. | :07:57.
Most places will see temperatures in the high teens, but they could reach | :07:58. | :08:03.
the mid-20s. The problem is judging those cloud breaks from day-to-day. | :08:04. | :08:08.
The high pressure is settling things down, but also dragging in some | :08:09. | :08:14.
cloud and we have this weather front trapped, which at the | :08:15. | :08:15. |
