Guilty, a dissident republican is jailed for life for murdering two | :00:12. | :00:17.
soldiers in Northern Ireland. Brian Shivers was convicted over an | :00:17. | :00:20.
attack claimed by the Real IRA three years ago. Patrick Azimkar | :00:20. | :00:23.
and Mark Quinsey were shot dead outside their barracks, the last | :00:23. | :00:27.
soldiers to be killed in Northern Ireland. | :00:27. | :00:31.
Another accused, Colin Duffy, walked free. Today the soldiers' | :00:31. | :00:35.
families said their quest for justice goes on. We know there are | :00:35. | :00:39.
more people involved and we want to see them sentenced. My world has | :00:39. | :00:44.
been torn apart. I can't change that. But please help the police | :00:44. | :00:47.
before these people destroy more families. | :00:47. | :00:53.

News at Six. A dissident republican has been jailed for life for the | :01:57. | :02:02.
murder of two soldiers outside a barracks in Northern Ireland. 46- | :02:02. | :02:06.
year-old Brian Shivers was found guilty over the killing three years | :02:06. | :02:09.
ago when Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey were gunned down | :02:09. | :02:14.
hours before they were due to be sent to Afghanistan. Another man, | :02:14. | :02:17.
44-year-old Colin Duffy, was cleared of taking part in the | :02:17. | :02:20.
ambush. Today the soldiers' families said they believed more | :02:20. | :02:24.
people were involved in the murders and appealed for information that | :02:24. | :02:29.
would help the police. This report contains flash | :02:29. | :02:32.
photography. The moments before the murders of | :02:32. | :02:38.
the two young soldiers were caught on CCTV. Dressed in their army | :02:38. | :02:42.
uniforms, five soldiers came out of their base to collect a pizza | :02:42. | :02:46.
delivery. Sapper Patrick Azimkar was in front, his colleague, Mark | :02:46. | :02:52.
Quinsey, was in the middle. Seconds later, they came under attack. 63 | :02:52. | :02:58.
shots were fired at them in less than a minute. A security guard | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:22. | ||
It was too late. The gunmen had gone. 21-year-old Patrick Azimkar | :03:22. | :03:26.
from London and 23-year-old Mark Quinsey from Birmingham were dead. | :03:26. | :03:33.
Two men later went on trial charged with the murders, Colin Duffy from | :03:33. | :03:37.
Lurgan and Brian Shivers from Magherafelt. Their trial was told | :03:37. | :03:41.
their DNA was discovered inside the getaway car found near the murder | :03:41. | :03:46.
scene. One police officer described it as a forensic gold mine. Brian | :03:46. | :03:50.
Shivers, who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, was today | :03:50. | :03:55.
found guilty of the murders. But his co-accused, Colin Duffy, seen | :03:55. | :04:00.
here in the beard, was acquitted and walked free from court. The | :04:00. | :04:04.
judge said the case against him had not been proved beyond reasonable | :04:04. | :04:08.
doubt. REPORTER: What is your reaction? | :04:08. | :04:13.
A small crowd of loyalists heckled him, but the police intervened to | :04:13. | :04:17.
stop any clashes. It's not the first time Colin Duffy has been | :04:17. | :04:21.
cleared on a murder charge. He was jailed for the killing of a soldier | :04:22. | :04:26.
in 1993 but the conviction was later overturned. Two years later, | :04:26. | :04:30.
he was accused of the murder of two police officers but the charges | :04:30. | :04:37.
were later dropped. Colin Duffy insisted he had nothing to do with | :04:37. | :04:40.
the killings at Massereene Barracks three years ago. The deaths | :04:40. | :04:45.
devastated the families of the young soldiers who died. My world | :04:45. | :04:50.
has been torn apart, I can't change that. But please help the police | :04:50. | :04:55.
before these people destroy more families. My brother loved his life, | :04:55. | :05:02.
but it was stolen away from him at such an early age. The families of | :05:03. | :05:07.
both soldiers came from England to hear today's verdicts. Patrick was | :05:07. | :05:12.
21, full of life and promise and good-humour. And it is hard to come | :05:12. | :05:17.
to terms with the senselessness of the attack and the waste of | :05:17. | :05:21.
Patrick's precious life. dissident republican splinter group | :05:21. | :05:26.
the Real IRA said it killed the two soldiers. The police believe up to | :05:26. | :05:32.
six people were involved. This investigation is not over. We will | :05:32. | :05:36.
continue to pursue all of those involved in these evil murders. | :05:36. | :05:40.
threat from dissidents remains. Last night, two bombs went off in | :05:40. | :05:44.
the centre of Londonderry, no-one was injured but it was another | :05:44. | :05:48.
reminder of the dangers facing the peace process. The police say every | :05:48. | :05:53.
means possible will be used to find all the killers of Patrick Azimkar | :05:53. | :05:59.
and Mark Quinsey and to try to prevent further attacks. | :05:59. | :06:02.
Let's join Mark live outside the barracks where the soldiers died. | :06:02. | :06:07.
What do you think today's verdict means for the dissident republican | :06:07. | :06:10.
movement then? Well, they are still armed, they are still active, they | :06:10. | :06:14.
are still dangerous, they are still unpredictable. Perhaps it is worth | :06:14. | :06:17.
reflecting tonight that they failed to achieve what they wanted to | :06:17. | :06:23.
achieve with those murders here, they thought they could re-start | :06:23. | :06:28.
the Troubles. What happened in the end was it brought people and | :06:28. | :06:33.
politicians closer together and three years on, the power-sharing | :06:33. | :06:37.
executive has never been more stable. The peace process goes on, | :06:37. | :06:41.
but that will be very little comfort tonight to the families of | :06:41. | :06:50.
those two young soldiers. Thank you. In Belfast, a third baby has died | :06:50. | :06:55.
in a hospital neonatal unit after an outbreak of infection. All other | :06:55. | :06:58.
babies in the unit have been swabbed for signs of the bacteria | :06:58. | :07:05.
and the premises are being deep- cleaned. | :07:05. | :07:09.
Hard to eradicate and potentially deadly, Pseudomonas is one of the | :07:09. | :07:15.
most common types of hospital- acquired infections, targeting the | :07:15. | :07:20.
most vulnerable. At Belfast's Royal Maternity Hospital it's already | :07:20. | :07:24.
claimed the lives of three tiny babies. Staff are preparing to | :07:25. | :07:28.
deep-clean the unit to ensure no- one else becomes infected. The | :07:28. | :07:33.
strain is affecting all of those involved. We have spent the last | :07:33. | :07:37.
couple of days trying to support the parents who are in this | :07:37. | :07:40.
situation because this is a very difficult and stressful time for | :07:40. | :07:47.
them, as it is for the staff in the unit. Every baby has been screened. | :07:47. | :07:52.
That means they have had swabs taken of their skin. So what is | :07:52. | :07:56.
Pseudomonas? Well, it is a common but tough type of bacterial | :07:56. | :08:01.
infection that has little effect on healthy people, in severe cases it | :08:01. | :08:06.
can cause blood poisoning. There were more than 3,800 incidents | :08:06. | :08:13.
reported last year. The bacteria can prove catastrophic for tiny | :08:13. | :08:20.
babies. It can cause pneumonia and lead to urinary tract infections. | :08:20. | :08:23.
This bacteria likes warm environments. Because of the nature | :08:23. | :08:28.
of the conditions that these babies have, we are often ventilating them | :08:28. | :08:34.
and they require warm air through the ventilator, so it is an ideal | :08:34. | :08:37.
breeding ground. Three families have suffered a devastating loss as | :08:37. | :08:42.
a result of this bacterial outbreak. These are desperately anxious times | :08:43. | :08:45.
for more than 20 other families whose children were being treated | :08:45. | :08:50.
in the same unit. They must wait to see if their children are also | :08:50. | :08:57.
infected. Gary Maguire knows what the parents may be going through. | :08:57. | :09:01.
His daughter was infected with Pseudomonas last year, but | :09:01. | :09:05.
recovered after being treated with antibiotics. My heart went out to | :09:05. | :09:12.
the parents because I know how we felt when our kiddie was in | :09:12. | :09:17.
intensive care. I'm deeply concerned that the Health Service | :09:17. | :09:20.
is putting children through this. The immediate task now is to | :09:20. | :09:24.
isolate and eradicate the source of this Pseudomonas outbreak. Longer | :09:24. | :09:27.
term, questions will have to be asked about how it could have been | :09:27. | :09:35.
prevented in the first place. The search operation on the Costa | :09:35. | :09:39.
Concordia has been hampered again today after the ship shifted on the | :09:39. | :09:43.
ledge of rock beneath it. It is now almost a week since the disaster. | :09:43. | :09:47.
21 people are still missing and more relatives have been gathering | :09:47. | :09:56.
on the Italian island of Giglio. The families of those still missing | :09:56. | :10:01.
came to Giglio today, a chance to see for themselves the wreck that | :10:01. | :10:06.
still holds their loved ones. Some were taken out by boat to lay a | :10:06. | :10:11.
wreath near the carcass of the ship, a poignant moment after a week of | :10:11. | :10:14.
waiting. It may be that some passengers did not make it out of | :10:14. | :10:19.
the ship because they were given a false sense of security. Footage | :10:19. | :10:23.
filmed by a passenger the night of the accident shows how a crew | :10:23. | :10:33.
:10:33. | :10:51. | ||
member tried to calm passengers There was some activity on the ship | :10:51. | :10:55.
today, albeit on deck. Below the waterline had been deemed too | :10:55. | :10:58.
dangerous for divers to resume their search because the ship had | :10:58. | :11:04.
moved prompting fears she could sink further. But yesterday divers | :11:04. | :11:09.
were allowed into the vessel and they came across this - the ship's | :11:09. | :11:16.
bell - a symbol of the once-proud Costa Concordia. As she reflects on | :11:16. | :11:21.
the events of a week ago, this woman told me how she, her friends | :11:21. | :11:28.
and family helped to pull people out of the water. | :11:28. | :11:33.
TRANSLATION: I still can't believe it. I swear, seeing it like that, I | :11:33. | :11:40.
ask myself if it is real and then I go down to the port and say, "Yes, | :11:40. | :11:43.
it's real." When I go home, I remember the crying children, the | :11:44. | :11:49.
desperate people and the people looking for their relatives. Today | :11:49. | :11:54.
Captain Schettino said that if he has made mistakes he is ready to | :11:54. | :11:56.
accept responsibility. As the investigation continues into his | :11:56. | :12:01.
actions, he claims that he informed Costa management in a phone call as | :12:02. | :12:06.
soon as he had hit the rocks. The company deny exerting pressure on | :12:06. | :12:11.
him to delay before declaring the ship should be abandoned. It is | :12:11. | :12:15.
clear there are still many questions about what exactly | :12:15. | :12:22.
happened on the Costa Concordia a week ago tonight. | :12:22. | :12:24.
France has suspended military operations in Afghanistan in | :12:24. | :12:28.
response to the killing of four of its troops by an Afghan soldier. At | :12:28. | :12:33.
least 15 other soldiers were wounded which happened in the | :12:33. | :12:36.
north-eastern province of Kapisa. President Sarkozy said he would | :12:36. | :12:39.
consider ordering the early withdrawal of all French soldiers | :12:39. | :12:42.
from Afghanistan if security didn't improve. | :12:42. | :12:47.
It is one of the most controversial reforms planned by the Government, | :12:47. | :12:50.
the overhaul of the multi-billion pound British welfare system. With | :12:51. | :12:53.
another political battle in the House of Lords expected on Monday, | :12:53. | :12:57.
the Minister in charge, Iain Duncan Smith, has denied that people are | :12:57. | :13:01.
suffering as a result of benefit cuts. He told the BBC a proposed | :13:01. | :13:07.
cap on benefits would help make families more independent. | :13:07. | :13:11.
Should there be a cap on how much benefits anyone can claim providing | :13:11. | :13:15.
they are capable of work? The Government says yes and the figure | :13:15. | :13:21.
should be 26,000 per family per year. The Government estimates that | :13:21. | :13:26.
50,000 households will have their benefits reduced by a cap, losing | :13:26. | :13:31.
around 93 a week. Welfare is about changing your life, it is about | :13:32. | :13:35.
taking you from dependency and moving you to independence and if | :13:35. | :13:38.
that means saying there is a limit to what the state is prepared to | :13:38. | :13:43.
pay, I think taxpayers on marginal and low incomes want to know there | :13:43. | :13:48.
is a limit. The Government are keen to talk about their idea of putting | :13:48. | :13:56.
a cap on benefits of 26,000 a year. They know frankly it is pretty | :13:56. | :14:00.
popular. What their critics say is they are trying to distract | :14:00. | :14:04.
attention from other much more serious benefit cuts which affect | :14:04. | :14:12.
many more people. Sandra won't be affected by the benefits cap, but | :14:12. | :14:16.
nevertheless she is packing up to move out of the flat she shares | :14:16. | :14:21.
with her five-year-old son. She will soon be officially homeless. | :14:21. | :14:27.
The reason? Cuts which have already been made to housing benefit. | :14:27. | :14:32.
one goes up, the benefit goes down. You can't find the money to pay the | :14:32. | :14:38.
extra bits. That means you have to pack your boxes and get out? | :14:38. | :14:42.
leave the area, leave the church, the school, everything. She doesn't | :14:43. | :14:46.
want to leave a community where she chairs the local residents' | :14:46. | :14:51.
association and was one of those named "Londoner of the Year". What | :14:51. | :14:56.
will you say to somebody who says it is a flies flat, a nice area, it | :14:56. | :15:01.
is tough, but the country can't afford to pay for it? Well, when I | :15:01. | :15:05.
moved here, it was not very expensive in here. Things change. | :15:05. | :15:08.
Cuts already made not just to housing benefit but to other | :15:08. | :15:13.
benefits are causing more and more people real concern. But the | :15:13. | :15:18.
Minister in charge of welfare reform is confident the public is | :15:18. | :15:22.
on his side. It appeals to taxpayers, what they don't like | :15:22. | :15:26.
hearing about is the many thousands of people who are now really | :15:26. | :15:36.
:15:36. | :15:37. | ||
It does two things. It means bigger bills for taxpayers and it means | :15:37. | :15:42.
your life and your children's lives will be blighted by being dependent | :15:42. | :15:46.
on the Secretary of State to give you the money to live. On Monday | :15:46. | :15:49.
the House of Lords will debate proposals to exclude child benefit | :15:49. | :15:53.
from the new cap. Listening its impact on large families. The Lords | :15:53. | :15:58.
have defeated the government before and this time a bishop is leading | :15:58. | :16:06.
the opposition. There's a very real risk that these reforms in the Bill | :16:06. | :16:10.
will cause suffering to the most vulnerable in society. What we are | :16:10. | :16:17.
hoping to do on Monday is a lesson that suffering for children in | :16:18. | :16:21.
families where parents are unemployed. Her that would | :16:21. | :16:25.
undermine the whole point, says the minister, who says he will fight to | :16:25. | :16:29.
reverse any change in the Commons. Next week the parliamentary battle | :16:29. | :16:32.
might be about the benefits cap, but the war is about something much | :16:32. | :16:38.
bigger. Our top story tonight: | :16:38. | :16:41.

their relationship. And the man considered the front-runner, Mitt | :17:29. | :17:32.

this debate alight. I am appalled that you would begin a Presidential | :17:59. | :18:05.
debate on a topic like this. the topic new age grinned rich | :18:05. | :18:10.

I said to him, we have been married a long time. He said, yes, but you | :18:20. | :18:25.
want me all to yourself. What was he saying to you? He was asking to | :18:25. | :18:30.
have an open marriage and I refused. He wanted an open marriage? Yes. | :18:30. | :18:34.
And I accept the fact he had somebody else in his life. And you | :18:34. | :18:41.
said? No. No. It would have been a killer blow for lesser candidates, | :18:41. | :18:46.
but just watch this for a masterclass in damage limitation. | :18:47. | :18:52.
let me be clear. The story is false, every personal friend I had says | :18:53. | :18:59.
the story is false. We asked ADC to prove it is false. I am tired of | :18:59. | :19:04.
the media protecting Barack Obama. It is the kind of red meat | :19:04. | :19:07.
Republicans devour. Newt Gingrich has performed well and his poll | :19:07. | :19:11.
ratings are up. More bad news for Mitt Romney, the man who has led | :19:11. | :19:15.
the field so far. The multi- millionaire struggling to answer | :19:15. | :19:20.
questions about his own finances. will take a look at what our | :19:20. | :19:27.
documents are. In an election dominated by the economy, he was | :19:27. | :19:30.
still prepared to explain where his money came from, where it is kept | :19:30. | :19:37.
and how much tax he pays. Tomorrow will be the third vote in this | :19:37. | :19:40.
contest and Newt Gingrich could squeeze into first place. The race | :19:40. | :19:45.
has just got a little tighter and certainly more interesting. But | :19:45. | :19:51.
Mitt Romney is still the man to beat and the Republican most likely | :19:51. | :19:55.
to stand against Barack Obama later this year. | :19:55. | :19:58.
In the first prosecution of its kind, three men who handed out | :19:58. | :20:01.

comment. They had insisted they were simply expressing their | :20:29. | :20:33.
religious views, but a jury found Kabir Ahmed, Ihjaz Ali and Razwan | :20:33. | :20:38.
Javed guilty, the first men to be convicted of inciting hate on the | :20:38. | :20:42.
grounds of sexual orientation. The leaflet was handed out after | :20:42. | :20:47.
prayers outside his mosque in Derby, although it is claimed the men | :20:47. | :20:52.
don't worship here. It says homosexuals will be published by | :20:52. | :20:55.
execution in an Islamic state and while we can't show you the leaflet, | :20:55. | :21:01.
it pictured a noose around a mannequin's neck. The leaflets were | :21:01. | :21:07.
put through it for letterboxes of houses and one of the men told the | :21:07. | :21:10.
court he even gave one to a passing policeman asking him if everything | :21:10. | :21:15.
was OK and telling him that he did not mean to offend anyone. But some | :21:15. | :21:20.
people did take offence, including this gay man who felt threatened. | :21:20. | :21:23.
thought there was somebody out there with a real hatred possibly | :21:23. | :21:30.
have me. I didn't know at that point it wasn't me. It sounds | :21:30. | :21:32.
dramatic, fire bombs being thrown through the window. In the streets | :21:32. | :21:38.
near the mosque, any support of the prosecution? Fire Muslim as well, | :21:38. | :21:45.
but I am against them. What they're doing is wrong. But a small number | :21:45. | :21:50.
refused to condemn the distribution of the leaflet. I don't think there | :21:50. | :21:54.
is anything wrong with it. I read it, I didn't find anything wrong | :21:54. | :21:58.
with it. Do not understand how somebody gay could find it | :21:58. | :22:05.
offensive? Yeah, but that's life. You just have to live with it. | :22:05. | :22:11.
to apologise? The content of the leaflet was criminal and the judges | :22:11. | :22:14.
warned the men convicted that when they are sentenced, they will face | :22:14. | :22:17.
time in prison. The Sunday Times has dropped its | :22:17. | :22:20.
legal challenge to a court order requiring it to hand over evidence | :22:20. | :22:23.
relating to a speeding case involving the Energy Secretary, | :22:23. | :22:27.
Chris Huhne. A Crown Court judge told the newspaper in October that | :22:27. | :22:37.
:22:37. | :22:37. | ||
it must give the evidence to Essex Police. A 51-year-old man has been | :22:37. | :22:41.
arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after driving an oil tanker | :22:41. | :22:46.
into a bungalow in Dorset. Emergency services were called to a | :22:46. | :22:49.
fire this morning. The woman who lives in the property is reported | :22:49. | :22:52.
to be safe and well. Heavy discounts and a last minute | :22:52. | :22:56.
Christmas rush helped shops to a good performance at the end of last | :22:56. | :22:58.
year. Figures out today showed clothing chains and department | :22:58. | :23:01.
stores did well, but other retailers still face a bleak | :23:01. | :23:05.
outlook. Our business correspondent Emma Simpson is on Oxford Street in | :23:05. | :23:11.
London with the details. What do you think these figures | :23:11. | :23:18.
reveal? Well, we had one of the final pieces of evidence today | :23:18. | :23:23.
about what happened on our high streets this Christmas. The Office | :23:23. | :23:29.
for National Statistics reported a 2.6% increase in sales in December | :23:29. | :23:32.
compared with the previous Christmas. Of course these figures | :23:32. | :23:37.
are flattered by the fact that the previous Christmas, retailers had a | :23:37. | :23:42.
terrible time with all that snow and there are indications that many | :23:42. | :23:45.
of these sales were secured through the massive discounting that took | :23:45. | :23:50.
place. The question is, is this sustainable? As ever with retail, | :23:51. | :23:55.
it is a mixed picture. There were winners, like John Lewis and House | :23:55. | :24:01.
of Fraser, and losers, like HMV. For HMV, there was a piece of good | :24:01. | :24:05.
news today. It has secured some breathing space from its banks as | :24:06. | :24:09.
it has secured a deal from suppliers so it gives it more of a | :24:09. | :24:15.
fighting chance. Also indications about hour online shopping habits? | :24:15. | :24:21.
Yes. One thing really stands out. It is the ever increasing rise of | :24:21. | :24:26.
online sales, up by 10% compared to last Christmas. We can really see | :24:26. | :24:31.
the internet having an impact on the high street. The fact is, we | :24:31. | :24:38.
just don't really need as many stores as we once did and 2012 | :24:38. | :24:43.
expects to see accelerated store closures thanks to technology and | :24:43. | :24:47.
cash-strapped consumers reining back. Thank you. | :24:47. | :24:52.

arrested in New Zealand. Megaupload.com is accused of making | :25:28. | :25:34.
millions from copyright theft. Today, hackers angry at the move | :25:34. | :25:36.
turned their fire on US government sites. Our technology correspondent, | :25:36. | :25:46.

It was a thriving business with high-profile musicians apparently | :25:52. | :26:00.

megaupload.com has been closed and its executives have appeared in a | :26:05. | :26:08.

really important and legitimate services, they are not all havens | :27:39. | :27:43.
for copyright infringement. They are useful for all internet users | :27:43. | :27:46.
and businesses. We need to make sure we don't throw the baby up | :27:46. | :27:52.
with the bath water. Megaupload.com, based in Hong Kong, may have been | :27:52. | :27:56.
put out of business, but a site promising something similar has | :27:57. | :28:06.
It is time to look at the weekend weather forecast. | :28:06. | :28:09.
A little bit of sunshine for everybody this weekend, but there | :28:09. | :28:13.
will be a few common themes as well and one of those will be the wind. | :28:13. | :28:17.
A very windy weekend, making it feel colder than temperatures would | :28:17. | :28:23.
suggest. The Sharif, windy story will hold tonight. We do clever way | :28:23. | :28:25.
some of the more persistent rain across northern and eastern areas, | :28:25. | :28:30.
but we are left with a lot of cloud, a strengthening wind and outbreaks | :28:30. | :28:34.
of rain and drizzle. Clearer conditions to the north-east where | :28:34. | :28:37.
temperatures will drop low enough for some ice, but generally mild | :28:37. | :28:41.
elsewhere. The cloudy, damp and windy start to the weekend across | :28:41. | :28:46.
the board. Light rain and drizzle, nothing to substantial. Skies will | :28:46. | :28:54.
brighten from the north. During the afternoon, as guys Brighton, the | :28:54. | :29:00.
wind will strengthen. The windy day up throughout in Scotland, possibly | :29:00. | :29:05.
60 to 70 mph in the north-east by the end of the day. 60 mph in | :29:05. | :29:08.
Northern Ireland and northern England. It should be a dry and | :29:08. | :29:13.
sunny afternoon, though. 50 mph possible further south, but the | :29:13. | :29:17.
further south the breaks in the cloud are harder to find and the | :29:17. | :29:21.
southern coastal areas could stay cloudy and fairly damp all day. | :29:21. | :29:27.
Temperatures of seven to 11 degrees, but feeling colder in the wind. | :29:27. | :29:31.
Watch how this weather front turns north through the night. A mild and | :29:31. | :29:34.
windy night again and as this weather system sweeps through, we | :29:34. | :29:38.
start Sunday with heavy rain and snow in Scotland and northern | :29:38. | :29:41.
England. That clears quickly and compared to Saturday, it brightens | :29:41. | :29:45.
up a little bit quicker. More sunshine in southern and eastern | :29:45. | :29:50. |
