The smugglers wore fake paramedic uniforms, there were even fake

Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Six.

:01:17.:01:34.

It was a huge drug smuggling operation with a difference -

:01:35.:01:37.

up to ?1.6 billion worth of class A drugs were brought

:01:38.:01:40.

The smugglers, from Holland, even went so far as to wear fake

:01:41.:01:47.

paramedic uniforms and transport fake patients on crutches.

:01:48.:01:52.

Three men were convicted today, at Birmingham Crown Court,

:01:53.:01:57.

for what detectives have called one of the biggest ever drug smuggling

:01:58.:02:00.

It looked convincing, a Dutch ambulance transporting patients

:02:01.:02:10.

But this ambulance never went near a hospital.

:02:11.:02:14.

It was caught on camera, making repeated visits to

:02:15.:02:16.

The court was told millions of pounds of class A drugs were

:02:17.:02:21.

Today the jury found 55-year-old Leonardus Bijlsma, a father of four,

:02:22.:02:30.

guilty of being part of a ?1.6 billion drug smuggling conspiracy.

:02:31.:02:34.

He was described as being the right-hand man of

:02:35.:02:37.

He admitted his part at an earlier hearing, along with

:02:38.:02:43.

The Dutch men were arrested in June near Smethwick by officers

:02:44.:02:52.

from the National crime agency in an intelligence led operation.

:02:53.:02:55.

?1.6 billion worth of drugs on the street, that is what it is worth.

:02:56.:02:58.

For us we are very content that we have arrested

:02:59.:03:02.

and convicted the principal subjects of this investigation and we will be

:03:03.:03:05.

looking to pursue them in the court to strip their assets away.

:03:06.:03:10.

This is just one of a fleet of ambulances used by the gang.

:03:11.:03:15.

The scale of the business was described in court as audacious.

:03:16.:03:20.

They used hiding places throughout the ambulance, including this one

:03:21.:03:24.

They even carried a bogus patient to make

:03:25.:03:30.

The court was shown this footage from a hotel camera.

:03:31.:03:37.

The fake paramedics were accompanied by a man on crutches,

:03:38.:03:41.

but a short time later the man is seen walking around freely.

:03:42.:03:45.

The ambulance was described as being rammed with drugs.

:03:46.:03:48.

These images show exactly what officers found.

:03:49.:03:51.

Cocaine, heroin and ecstasy tablets with a

:03:52.:03:53.

The court heard officers subsequently found that 45

:03:54.:04:03.

No corner of this ambulance was left untouched

:04:04.:04:06.

In Holland other vehicles were impounded.

:04:07.:04:13.

The ambulances were part of an elaborate drug smuggling plot.

:04:14.:04:16.

The key players will be sentenced next month.

:04:17.:04:26.

The three men will face lengthy prison sentences. Given the

:04:27.:04:32.

staggering scale of the operation. The drugs were brought into the

:04:33.:04:38.

United Kingdom over a 14 month period, using eleven ambulances.

:04:39.:04:43.

Tonight, the national crime agency said all the drugs have been

:04:44.:04:48.

destroyed. They described it as one of their biggest ever hauls,

:04:49.:04:53.

bringing high level criminals to justice. Thank you.

:04:54.:04:57.

A memorial service has been held in Paris, to remember those killed

:04:58.:04:59.

A thousand people gathered - survivors of the attack, some

:05:00.:05:03.

on hospital trollies, and victims' families to hear the names read out

:05:04.:05:06.

The French President Francois Hollande said his country would do

:05:07.:05:10.

all it could to destroy the "army of fanatics" who attacked the city.

:05:11.:05:13.

In it is monument to war-time heroes, France today honoured its

:05:14.:05:31.

civilian dead. They stood together - president, Prime Minister, the angry

:05:32.:05:35.

and the grieving, as the names of those they lost were read out into

:05:36.:05:50.

the winter air. Nick Alexander... Listening to the roll call were

:05:51.:05:54.

:05:58.:06:04.

:06:05.:06:10.

:06:11.:06:17.

ourselves. His words echoed by those of France's national anthem. A

:06:18.:06:21.

reminder that this was an attack not just on individuals, but on the idea

:06:22.:06:31.

of France. Among the names read out in Paris was Hugo, at Montpellier

:06:32.:06:39.

university they remembered him, as a student with a passion for punk

:06:40.:06:49.

rock. Among the students, Hugo's father, Hugo had been staying at his

:06:50.:06:57.

flat to catch a concert. He told me how his son struggled with his

:06:58.:07:04.

study, his love life and how music brought them close. I was still his

:07:05.:07:09.

father, but we became friend, because I was an old gieshgs he was

:07:10.:07:16.

The Prodigy! Last mon Hugo returned from holiday in Japan. He felt his

:07:28.:07:34.

problems were behind him. He showed us his new tattoo. It was the best

:07:35.:07:44.

gift he made to me because... Sorry. Because it was OK that now I'm free

:07:45.:07:48.

and I show that you, I can go further. It was his last message.

:07:49.:07:54.

The last time I saw him. It was... A message of hope. At Montpellier,

:07:55.:08:02.

they gathered to receive Hugo home. His friends, family and members of

:08:03.:08:05.

his band and the shock showing through their tears. Across France

:08:06.:08:10.

parents are starting to bury their children. Husband, their wives. Amid

:08:11.:08:17.

the national commemoration, each individual death is being

:08:18.:08:22.

remembered, each short life. He was said his father, my boy. My baby. My

:08:23.:08:31.

friend. As 23 years after Hugo was born, a congregation, a town, a

:08:32.:08:43.

nation, say goodbye. The attacks in Paris two weeks ago.

:08:44.:08:46.

Two former Labour ministers have called for Jeremy Corbyn to resign

:08:47.:08:49.

over the way he has handled the party's debate about air strikes

:08:50.:08:52.

against the so-called Islamic State in Syria - describing his behaviour

:08:53.:08:55.

Hilary Benn said he believes Britain should take part in action. James

:08:56.:09:10.

Landale reports. The crisis in Syria plunged Jeremy Corbyn into a battle

:09:11.:09:14.

with his MPs over the most serious decision Parliament can make - to

:09:15.:09:18.

send British war planes into harm's way. The decision to announce hi

:09:19.:09:24.

won't back military action put him as odds with his Shadow Cabinet and

:09:25.:09:29.

infuriated many MPs who want a free vote and some are talking he may

:09:30.:09:34.

have to resign. There is a poisonous atmosphere in the Labour Party at

:09:35.:09:37.

the moment, which is very disagreeable, but it is minor

:09:38.:09:40.

compared to the serious decisions that have to be taken. How does

:09:41.:09:46.

Jeremy Corbyn and his small group think they have got the unique view

:09:47.:09:51.

on it? If anybody should be resigning actual this it should be

:09:52.:09:57.

Jeremy Corbyn. At the common wealth summit, the Prime Minister again

:09:58.:10:01.

made the argument for attacking Islamic State. Many MPs on all sides

:10:02.:10:06.

agreed there was a compelling case. I would urge all of them to vote on

:10:07.:10:12.

the basis of the arguments. That argument to counter the threat from

:10:13.:10:17.

IS with military force is accepted by Labour's shadow Foreign Secretary

:10:18.:10:25.

who said he wouldn't resign. We know what they do, the crucifixes and the

:10:26.:10:30.

selling of women into slavery. It is important that we as the United

:10:31.:10:35.

Kingdom play our full part and show solidarity with our great ally,

:10:36.:10:40.

France. On social media the shadow Chancellor urged his colleagues to

:10:41.:10:47.

calm down. While other pro-Corbyn campaigners send out e-mails urging

:10:48.:10:54.

Labour MPs to oppose bombing. Party members will want MPs to unite. What

:10:55.:10:58.

Jeremy Corbyn is saying is what party members are saying. It is a

:10:59.:11:02.

row that has been felt in Oldham near Manchester where voters will

:11:03.:11:07.

elect a new MP. Jeremy Corbyn cancelled a planned visit to deal

:11:08.:11:13.

with the crisis. Oldham is a safe Labour seat, but Labour MPs are

:11:14.:11:18.

nervous. They fear many of the party's traditional supporters won't

:11:19.:11:22.

vote, and some think that Jeremy Corbyn is the reason why. What do

:11:23.:11:28.

you think about Jeremy Corbyn? I'm not over gone on him. Speaks a lot

:11:29.:11:33.

of sense in my opinion. I don't like him. You will still vote Labour? Yes

:11:34.:11:42.

I don't like him, but Labour are the work class values. What do you

:11:43.:11:48.

think? Are you him? Not keen on him. The row is more than about Labour's

:11:49.:11:57.

chances at the ballot box. It could decide whether war planes are

:11:58.:11:59.

striking Syria soon. Police say a gun attack on two

:12:00.:12:02.

officers in Belfast last night was attempted murder. The gunmen fired

:12:03.:12:05.

eight rounds at a patrol car. The police said it bore the hallmarks of

:12:06.:12:08.

an attack by dissident republicans. Current and former MPs are to be

inquiry like this. Uncovering the secret history of child sexual abuse

:12:49.:12:53.

and the response of our institutions. Daunting. There is no

:12:54.:12:58.

doubt that the task we have set ourselves if the first phase is

:12:59.:13:06.

ambitious. To run 12 investigations in parallel represents an

:13:07.:13:10.

organisational challenge that is unprecedented. In the first 18

:13:30.:13:35.

churches. This inquiry will examine whether the Church of England's own

:13:36.:13:41.

inquiries were properly carried out. But Lowell Goddard's scrutiny of the

:13:42.:13:45.

establishment won't end there. He will look at what she called the

:13:46.:13:51.

cover ups in Westminster, former and current MPs, advisors, and the

:13:52.:13:54.

Security Services looking for the bad in the great and good. The

:13:55.:14:03.

activities of former MP Cyril Smith will be examined and the

:14:04.:14:09.

establishments closeness to a disgraced bishop. He cited Prince

:14:10.:14:16.

Charles as a supporters. Lowell Goddard said she expects

:14:17.:14:19.

co-operation from all. But another challenge is to win the trust of

:14:20.:14:24.

survivors. When you're abused all the power and control is taken from

:14:25.:14:29.

you. So to gain that back, you have to trust people that you come into

:14:30.:14:35.

contact with. In Lambeth in London, lack of trust resulted in victims at

:14:36.:14:39.

this former care homes doing their own investigation and now the

was about covering it up. In 60s covering it up and in the end it was

:14:50.:14:53.

covering up the cover up. Do you think this will get to the bottom of

:14:54.:14:57.

what happened? We need to know certain people are going to be

:14:58.:15:01.

called and give evidence, people who we say are responsible indirectly to

what took place. It is not just about the past, this inquiry will

Government Association had calculated by 2020 there would be a

:21:07.:21:13.

could reduce the gap by raising 1.7 billion, but the LGA estimates by

:21:14.:21:16.

then overall council budgets will have fallen by 24%, affecting other

services. In North Yorkshire the director of adult care says they are

:21:42.:21:46.

locally. But councillors have to make a decision about how they are

able to raise the tax burden on local people. The government says it

is putting more money into creating sustainable care services and it

off the isles of Scilly and is currently under guard on a beach at

:24:39.:24:41.

We sent our reporter Johnny O'Shea to find out more.

:24:42.:24:48.

On the beach a local boat Yard worker has been busy cleaning

:24:49.:24:53.

barnacles from this unusual piece of space debris. It was towed here

:24:54.:25:00.

yesterday after the skipper of the island's boat service spotted it out

:25:01.:25:05.

at sea. We were quite intrigued as to what it was. At first they

:25:06.:25:09.

thought it might have been part of an aeroplane, but it was pretty

:25:10.:25:14.

shocking to scrape the barnacles off and find out it is part of a rocket

:25:15.:25:20.

ship. The debris is believed to be from this spacecraft launched from

:25:21.:25:26.

Cape Canaveral in September, 2014. It was taking part to the

:25:27.:25:29.

International Space Station. Photographs from before the launch

:25:30.:25:33.

show the same detail on the side of the rocket. It has caused quite a

:25:34.:25:37.

stir on Tresco and everybody is talking about this piece of space

:25:38.:25:43.

rocket. One enterprising local man started charging ?5 to have photos

:25:44.:25:52.

taken of it, ?10 if he was in the photos as well, trying to capitalise

:25:53.:25:54.

on this most unlikely of new arrivals. Now it is here nobody is

:25:55.:25:59.

sure what happens next. Its American owners are trying to verify exactly

:26:00.:26:03.

which rocket it is. Perhaps they will want it back in Florida or

:26:04.:26:06.

perhaps it will find a permanent home year on this remote island.

Adele's new album 25 has become the biggest selling British album ever.

:26:13.:26:19.

It sold more than 800,000 copies this week, that's more than

:26:20.:26:22.

According to the Official Charts Company it's

:26:23.:26:28.

the highest opening week sales in UK chart history, beating the

Time for a look at the weather, with Sarah Lucas.

:26:32.:26:45.

She was battling the winter. Yes, that could have been filmed

:26:46.:26:54.

outside the day. But it has not been all doom and gloom. Look at these

:26:55.:26:58.

gorgeous spells of sunshine in North Lincolnshire. But sunny spells are

:26:59.:27:04.

in short supply as we move through the weekend. Things are looking very

:27:05.:27:09.

unsettled with plenty of showery rain and snow on the hills and

:27:10.:27:15.

mountains of Scotland. We have got this weather front with us at the

:27:16.:27:20.

moment. It pushes away towards the east and then our attention turns to

:27:21.:27:25.

heavy showers piling in from the west, and strengthening winds as

:27:26.:27:30.

well. These showers are falling as snow on top of the hills and

:27:31.:27:36.

mountains of Scotland. Three or 4 degrees typically Saturday morning,

:27:37.:27:40.

but colder than that in the countryside. It will be a windy day

:27:41.:27:45.

tomorrow. The far South East of England probably stays dry for

:27:46.:27:49.

longest and those gusts could reach 40-50 mph. Temperature wise it is

:27:50.:27:56.

5-10 , so cooler than recent days and it will feel cold where you are

:27:57.:28:02.

exposed to the strong wind. We keep the wind and the showers as we head

:28:03.:28:06.

through Saturday night and into Sunday. On Sunday it is another

:28:07.:28:12.

blustery day. Heavy showers once again moving across much of the

:28:13.:28:17.

country. The gusts could well reach 50-60 miles an hour on Sunday

:28:18.:28:22.

again, having the potential to cause disruption. Turning a bit milder in

:28:23.:28:26.

the south, but still pretty cold in the North. Lots happening over the

:28:27.:28:32.

weekend. We have got warnings in force for rain and wind as well.

:28:33.:28:35.

Keep up-to-date with the latest online.

That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's goodbye from me
