The mass shooting in California - growing evidence that

:00:00.:00:00.

at least one of the killers was linked to Islamist extremism.

:00:07.:00:10.

There are reports that the female killer posted her allegiance to

:00:11.:00:13.

so-called Islamic State on Facebook during the attack on Wednesday.

:00:14.:00:18.

In the last half hour journalists have been allowed into the house

:00:19.:00:21.

of the two killers, still strewn with their belongings.

:00:22.:00:24.

As investigators in the US try to piece together the links between the

:00:25.:00:27.

two killers and Islamist extremism, we'll bring you the latest.

A cult leader from north London is found guilty of

raping his followers and imprisoning his daughter for decades.

:00:35.:00:38.

He used violence and intimidation to brainwash his followers.

His daughter wasn't allowed to go to school or have friends.

Rush hour misery tonight, and travellers face weeks of disruption.

:01:20.:01:42.

Good evening and welcome to the BBC News at Six.

:01:43.:01:44.

There are growing indications tonight that that

:01:45.:01:47.

the mass shooting in California, in which 14 people were murdered,

:01:48.:01:50.

It's reported that one of the killers, Tashfeen Malik had

:01:51.:01:54.

posted on Facebook during the attack, pledging allegiance to

:01:55.:01:57.

In the last half hour, journalists have been allowed into the house of

:01:58.:02:03.

Malik and her husband, Syed Farook, who also took part in the massacre

:02:04.:02:06.

Laura Bicker from reports San Bernardino.

:02:07.:02:23.

Jon Sopel is in the house. What can you see. This was the baby's room,

:02:24.:02:31.

where presumably Tashfeen Malik picked up her baby two days ago, and

:02:32.:02:37.

hours later it was an orphan. Strewn with belongings. Over there, the

:02:38.:02:41.

computer where he worked and some of his possessions are still on the

:02:42.:02:48.

table. For example, his card from California State University. All of

:02:49.:02:52.

the FM of everyday life. But the disclosure that she had pledged

:02:53.:02:56.

allegiance to Islamic State has changed this whole investigation, as

:02:57.:02:58.

Laura Becker reports. As the city gathered to grieve

:02:59.:03:04.

and all faiths shared in the heartbreak, there was also

:03:05.:03:06.

praise for the police response. Those who were there first spoke

:03:07.:03:08.

of carnage. It was something that I

:03:09.:03:11.

don't think we prepare for. In active shooter, they talk

:03:12.:03:17.

about sensory overload, they try to throw everything at you to prepare

you for dealing with that, what you The FBI is still investigating

:03:21.:03:23.

whether the couple, who appeared to have planned this

:03:24.:03:34.

attack, had links to terrorists. Syed Farook and his wife,

:03:35.:03:37.

Tashfeen Malik, were not on any terror watch lists, but US media say

:03:38.:03:42.

she posted a message online Officers found weapons

:03:43.:03:47.

and enough ammunition to kill hundreds of people at their home,

:03:48.:03:54.

and before the attack they smashed all their digital equipment,

:03:55.:03:58.

including their phones. Including 12 pipe bombs

:03:59.:04:03.

and material for many more. And yet their family say

:04:04.:04:07.

this is out of character. I can never imagine my brother or

:04:08.:04:10.

my sister-in-law doing something like this, especially because they

:04:11.:04:13.

were happily married and have I ask myself if I had called them

:04:14.:04:16.

that morning or the night before, asked him how he was doing, what he

:04:17.:04:22.

was up to, if I had any inclination, But it's too late

:04:23.:04:26.

for victims such as this girl, who fled persecution in Iran,

a Christian running from extremism. She would be the one I would talk

:04:32.:04:35.

to mostly about everything. Like I've said before,

:04:36.:04:38.

she's my best friend, basically. The FBI says this is still

:04:39.:04:45.

an active investigation, but the acts of a quiet couple who

:04:46.:04:58.

neighbours believed to be living the American dream could confirm

this country's worst fears. Laura Bicker, BBC News,

San Bernardino. We can talk to Jon Sopel who is

:05:11.:05:13.

inside the house of the two killers. What is beginning to emerge about

:05:14.:05:27.

this husband and wife team is a scenario the US security services

:05:28.:05:32.

had dreaded, isn't it? This is totally the nightmare scenario. We

:05:33.:05:35.

are in this house with the permission of the owners and the

:05:36.:05:42.

police, and it is suburban, normal. These people were leading quiet,

:05:43.:05:47.

anonymous lives, seemingly model US citizens. In the time they were

:05:48.:05:51.

here, amassing a lot of weaponry, because this had effectively become

:05:52.:05:56.

a bomb factory. As well as all of the stuff we have shown you, the

:05:57.:05:59.

personal effects of these people, leading lives at the University and

:06:00.:06:03.

whatever else, they were amassing weaponry, know-how, the wherewithal

:06:04.:06:08.

to launch perhaps multiple attacks, and maybe that was the intention.

:06:09.:06:13.

But at no time flashing on the radar of American security services. The

:06:14.:06:18.

so-called clean skins scenario, where you lead a quiet suburban

:06:19.:06:22.

life, all the time planning an attack like the one that has

:06:23.:06:25.

happened in San Bernardino, where we are now. It was the nightmare

:06:26.:06:30.

scenario for the security services, and it has become a reality, and I

:06:31.:06:36.

would imagine we will hear from the director of the FBI a little later

and sexual degradation to keep the women under control

for several decades. The 75-year-old brainwashed

:09:32.:09:36.

his followers into thinking he had god-like powers, and never allowed

:09:37.:09:38.

his daughter to go to school or play Captivity. The year after year,

three decades in all, in ordinary flats and houses. Aravindan

:09:58.:10:03.

Balakrishnan's bizarre cult dominated the lives of its members.

:10:04.:10:08.

It became clear that the victims were so conditioned that they truly

:10:09.:10:12.

believed he was all-powerful and all seeing. Some shared his politics,

:10:13.:10:18.

but this young woman was his daughter, born into the cult and

:10:19.:10:24.

hidden from the world. What I first learnt to write was the love it a

:10:25.:10:29.

la. My mother used to say he is God, the star of our life, so we have to

:10:30.:10:33.

worship him. This is her first ever interview. She told me he demanded

:10:34.:10:41.

loyalty. He is in charge and everybody is basically his slave. I

:10:42.:10:46.

used to feel like killing myself, when I was aged six. The cult was

:10:47.:10:54.

born in the fever I'll maintain 70s. Balakrishnan quoted China's

:10:55.:10:58.

Chairman Mao, but later the brainwashing began, that he had

:10:59.:11:02.

supernatural powers. This was the first of 13 flats and houses they

:11:03.:11:06.

lived in. There were always rules, work for the collective, forget your

:11:07.:11:12.

family. Doors were often locked, and going out alone was frowned upon

:11:13.:11:15.

because of the risks outside from the British fascist state. I was

:11:16.:11:20.

even told not to look out of windows. Sometimes I didn't I would

:11:21.:11:24.

see other children playing. A neighbour had a party for a little

:11:25.:11:29.

boy with balloons and slides in the garden. I was told not to look at

:11:30.:11:34.

that but I did look. And I used to feel that I'm missing out.

:11:35.:11:39.

Neighbours saw faces at windows and him leading his followers to the

:11:40.:11:43.

shops, but they did not see what went on behind closed doors, the

:11:44.:11:50.

beatings and the rapes. He did not sexually abuse his daughter but he

:11:51.:11:53.

did do this. I remember lying on the floor near the front door and he put

:11:54.:11:59.

his foot on my face and kicked my head. And then he put me outside,

:12:00.:12:04.

outside the door, and locked the door, with me outside. And that was

:12:05.:12:10.

just so scary because I'd been told that I would die if I was put

:12:11.:12:13.

outside, horrible monsters would come and take me away. This was her

:12:14.:12:21.

mother, loyal to Balakrishnan. In 1997 she died falling from a window.

:12:22.:12:26.

He and his followers turned up at being questioned. No one mentioned a

:12:27.:12:32.

daughter. This woman is not one of his victims

:12:33.:12:37.

and still supports him. She accompanied his daughter when they

:12:38.:12:41.

left the cult. That was in 2013, by now living in this flat with two

:12:42.:12:45.

sets of curtains covering the windows they had seen a BBC News

:12:46.:12:48.

report about the charity which helped women. Using a hidden phone,

:12:49.:12:54.

they called. It is Balakrishnan's hatred that his daughter most

:12:55.:12:58.

despises but she will not hate him. I forgive him. You forgive him? I

:12:59.:13:05.

would like to reconcile with him in future. If I leave the place with

:13:06.:13:09.

anger, hatred and bitterness, I am still in prison and I don't want to

:13:10.:13:16.

be in prison in that way. Aravindan Balakrishnan has been told to expect

:13:17.:13:18.

a substantial prison sentence. And if you've been affected

a test of Jeremy Corbyn's leadership. If it was he has passed

with flying colours. He came here just once during the campaign, which

:14:31.:14:35.

concentrated on local issues, but today he said the victory had wider

:14:36.:14:40.

significance. It shows how strong, how deep rooted and broad, our

:14:41.:14:44.

party, the Labour Party is, for the whole of Britain. Thank you very

much. Jim McMahon, the new MP, has given Labour a welcome boost. This

:14:51.:14:56.

is a truly overwhelming thing for a local lad to represent the town he

:14:57.:15:00.

loves in Westminster. Friends are clear about who should claim credit.

:15:01.:15:05.

It was not a vote of confidence in Jeremy Corbyn, people voted for Jim

:15:06.:15:11.

McMahon because of who he is, he is a great guy. The years it has been a

:15:12.:15:16.

rock-solid Labour seat Ukip talked up their chances, saying white

:15:17.:15:21.

working-class voters had been put off by Mr Corbyn. In the market

:15:22.:15:26.

today is some voters were concerned about Labour's direction under

:15:27.:15:31.

Jeremy Corbyn, but there was little enthusiasm for other parties. I am

:15:32.:15:36.

glad they won. Jeremy Corbyn is not the leader, not a leader of men as

:15:37.:15:41.

far as I am concerned. What worries you about his leadership? He is a

:15:42.:15:50.

wimp. He will spoil the Labour Party. Ukip did not do so well? I do

:15:51.:15:56.

not have views on Ukip, a comedian party. I do not like them and I do

:15:57.:16:04.

not like him, is Ferrari he called? The support of the local candidate

:16:05.:16:08.

seems to have delivered Jeremy Corbyn an early Christmas present.

:16:09.:16:18.

Some thought voters would be deterred. Ukip is considering a

:16:19.:16:24.

formal complaint of electoral fraud, alleging people turned up with

:16:25.:16:28.

bundles of postal votes. There is a large ethnic vote in this country,

:16:29.:16:33.

who vote Labour, indeed in one of the boxes last night it was 99%

:16:34.:16:38.

Labour and almost the electoral process is now dead in those areas.

:16:39.:16:43.

This result has given the Labour Party a moment of unity after days

:16:44.:16:48.

of division. But there will be tougher places to win them here.

:16:49.:16:50.

A fall in the number of motorists caught drinking - a year after

And Judy Murray's controversial plan for a development on greenbelt land

:17:16.:17:20.

The government has admitted to the BBC that the low number

:17:21.:17:32.

of people with learning disabilities in work is "unacceptable".

:17:33.:17:36.

Four years ago, of people with learning disabilities,

:17:37.:17:38.

That compares to the general population of the UK

:17:39.:17:45.

A year ago, the Conservative Minister, Lord Freud,

:17:46.:17:51.

was criticised for suggesting some people with disabilities should be

:17:52.:17:54.

The government says that's not the answer.

:17:55.:17:56.

Our disability news correspondent Nikki Fox has been taking

:17:57.:17:58.

Eton College, the college that has educated 19 prime ministers. Working

:17:59.:18:12.

hard in the cafeteria is Sam, who has a learning disability. He does

:18:13.:18:19.

not want to run the country he fancies a career as a chef. How much

:18:20.:18:24.

do you like working here? I like the work here because I love this job. I

:18:25.:18:31.

like to be independent. He is independent because he is in paid

:18:32.:18:35.

work. Sam and his employer have access to outside help when they

:18:36.:18:40.

need it. It is known as supported employment and enables him to serve

:18:41.:18:44.

600 hungry students daily, just as fast as other colleagues. Sam is one

:18:45.:18:52.

of only 6% of people with learning disabilities in work and being paid

:18:53.:18:57.

the minimum wage. A year ago the government minister Lord Freud

:18:58.:19:00.

suggested some disabled people work for less. The remarks caused outrage

:19:01.:19:06.

with many groups calling for his resignation. He apologised, but with

:19:07.:19:11.

the unemployment rate as low as it is, could paying less be an option?

:19:12.:19:17.

This person has been volunteering at this cafe for ten years and has

:19:18.:19:22.

never had a paid job, but he wants one. His dad agrees it is the

:19:23.:19:28.

minimum wage that is the barrier. If he is paid ?2 50 an hour that is not

:19:29.:19:34.

a problem. As he can only work to 50% capacity should he possibly be

:19:35.:19:39.

on a reduced wage to somebody on the minimum wage? Those who have done

:19:40.:19:44.

research on the problem disagree. If you reduce the minimum wage for

:19:45.:19:49.

people with disabilities you begin to devalue the job people do. The

:19:50.:19:54.

government don't seem to take this agenda as seriously as they should.

:19:55.:19:58.

There is no accountability when people fail to take the agenda

:19:59.:20:04.

forward. Why have the figures for people with disabilities in

:20:05.:20:07.

employment gone down? That is something we will look carefully at.

:20:08.:20:11.

It is not acceptable which is why the government is committed to

:20:12.:20:16.

halving the gap. The key failure is there has not been sufficient

:20:17.:20:22.

engagement with businesses. The employment rate among those with

:20:23.:20:26.

learning disabilities has remained low for decades. What Sam shows is

:20:27.:20:30.

given the opportunity to work and with the right support, he like many

:20:31.:20:34.

others can flourish, whatever career they choose to take.

:20:35.:20:37.

ITV has apologised for showing a news item about Sir

:20:38.:20:40.

Lenny Henry receiving a knighthood that briefly featured footage of the

:20:41.:20:43.

ITV News blamed the mistake on "an error in the production process".

:20:44.:20:48.

Sir Lenny said he was very thankful to receive a

:20:49.:20:51.

knighthood from the Queen for services to drama and charity.

:20:52.:20:54.

It's used by 80,000 motorists a day, but today it was announced the Fort

:20:55.:20:58.

Road Bridge - one of Scotland's key transport links - will be closed

:20:59.:21:01.

Engineers say work needs to be carried out on a structural fault -

:21:02.:21:07.

at one point this morning there was an 11-mile tailback at

:21:08.:21:10.

Our Scotland correspondent Kevin Keane has the story.

:21:11.:21:18.

It should be teeming with traffic, but this is how the Forth Road

:21:19.:21:26.

Bridge will look for the foreseeable future. And for the 80,000 vehicles

:21:27.:21:31.

that use it daily, sitting in long queues could now become routine. For

:21:32.:21:37.

drivers it means a lengthy detour and now with no end in sight. This

:21:38.:21:43.

does not help anybody. But if the bridge is unsafe, it is a need. Here

:21:44.:21:50.

is what is wrong, a crack in the steelwork puts stress on the rest of

:21:51.:21:53.

the bridge and eight other weak points have been identified. The

:21:54.:22:02.

closure is a drastic step. It is a busy route connecting Edinburgh with

:22:03.:22:06.

Fife and cities like Dundee. Engineers say allowing more vehicles

:22:07.:22:10.

to cross will cause further damage. It is not the first time problems

have been found. The cabling across the top of the towers has been

:22:15.:22:18.

snapping in places in recent years and that has led to the construction

:22:19.:22:23.

of a new bridge alongside. Unfortunately, it will not open for

:22:24.:22:28.

another year. The Forth Road Bridge was built 50 years ago where drivers

:22:29.:22:35.

once sat to take a ferry. Ministers are considering reviving the boat.

:22:36.:22:41.

We will try to mitigate the impact through supporting travel plans,

:22:42.:22:46.

encouraging people to use public transport, strength and rail,

:22:47.:22:51.

looking at a ferry service and bus privatisations. This is something

:22:52.:22:58.

Scotland's drivers will now have to get used to.

:22:59.:23:00.

If you're watching from the dinner table this evening, chances are a

:23:01.:23:03.

lot of what's on your plate wasn't grown in this country, but will have

:23:04.:23:06.

Just under half of all the food we eat is imported,

:23:07.:23:10.

But now this food supply chain could be at risk because of the impact

:23:11.:23:16.

The boss of Asda says it's one of the biggest issues facing

:23:17.:23:20.

his industry - and 95% of the supermarket's fresh produce could be

:23:21.:23:23.

Emma Simpson has the latest of our reports during this month's crucial

:23:24.:23:28.

So much of our food comes from a complex global supply chain.

:23:29.:23:43.

The boss of Asda told me we can no longer take it for granted.

:23:44.:23:49.

Climate change is a global issue, it is a big industry issue

:23:50.:23:52.

and particularly an industry issue in the UK.

:23:53.:23:56.

We have been mapping this issue across our business to understand

:23:57.:23:59.

the impact it will have on our organisation, but also more

:24:00.:24:02.

We know 95% of all produce we sell could be affected in the future

:24:03.:24:12.

Water is already in short supply in this part of the world.

:24:13.:24:23.

Farmers are noticing the hot dry summers are getting longer.

:24:24.:24:28.

In a short space of time it has changed very quickly.

:24:29.:24:34.

If the pace of change continues, it is clear we will be really affected.

:24:35.:24:39.

That is 17 of these - to make just one orange.

:24:40.:24:52.

No wonder here they make sure they don't waste a single drop.

:24:53.:24:56.

And this fruit needs to keep flowing in the years ahead.

:24:57.:25:00.

If not, supermarket prices will rise.

:25:01.:25:06.

With electric sensors, they measure just how much water the soil needs.

:25:07.:25:22.

Healthy soil is crucial where ever it is.

:25:23.:25:24.

Back here, the government's own experts say parts of

:25:25.:25:26.

We could become more reliant on imported food

:25:27.:25:31.

if farmers don't make their soil more resilient to extreme weather.

:25:32.:25:34.

He has given up ploughing this field in Kent.

:25:35.:25:41.

It means it does not lie bare between harvests.

:25:42.:25:45.

Instead, he covers it with crops to protect and improve the soil.

:25:46.:25:48.

After heavy rain, I've noticed the soil absorbs water better.

:25:49.:25:55.

I am not seeing soil erosion at all, no soil running out of the gate

:25:56.:26:00.

and down the road and also, in the spring, we are able to start

:26:01.:26:03.

Making more of what we've got in the face of climate change.

:26:04.:26:10.

Everyone in this industry will need to do this if we are to have this

:26:11.:26:15.

fresh produce all year round at prices we can afford.

:26:16.:26:17.

Let's take a look at the weather. A quick look to the Atlantic and you

:26:18.:26:34.

can see something is going on with a massive cloud heading our way. It

:26:35.:26:40.

will eventually headed towards our shores, being pushed along by a

:26:41.:26:46.

strong jet stream. The fourth storm of the season. Storm Desmond has

:26:47.:26:50.

been named because we expect significant impacts from rain and

:26:51.:26:54.

wind. It is blustery across Scotland. Up to 60 mph. Blustery

:26:55.:27:00.

across the UK. The rain will get heavier across the northern half of

:27:01.:27:06.

the UK. Rain warnings have been issued. Be prepared for heavy

:27:07.:27:11.

rainfall in this part of the world. The warning will last for 24 hours.

:27:12.:27:17.

Tomorrow, largely dry in the south, but wet and windy in northern

:27:18.:27:22.

parts. The wettest weather over higher ground and rainfall totals

:27:23.:27:28.

could the 200 millimetres. At lower levels, between 60 and 100

:27:29.:27:32.

millimetres. Largely dry, further south. But winds up to 40, 50 miles

:27:33.:27:42.

an hour, in the west, up to 60 mph for some. On top of that we have

:27:43.:27:48.

heavy rainfall. It looks pretty miserable and I suspect there will

:27:49.:27:53.

be issues with transport in particular, with this combination of

:27:54.:27:57.

severe gales and rain, disruption to travel is likely. On Sunday the

:27:58.:28:02.

worst of the weather slips out. There will be rain but not as heavy

:28:03.:28:07.

as tomorrow. Some improvements in northern England. And in Scotland

:28:08.:28:14.

where a bit of sunshine will be coming through. A lot going on. Keep

:28:15.:28:17.

up-to-date online. There are reports tonight that one

:28:18.:28:20.

of the two mass killers in California posted her allegiance to

:28:21.:28:26.

so-called Islamic State on Facebook. That's all from the BBC News at Six.

:28:27.:28:28.

so it's goodbye from me and on BBC One we now join the BBC's news

:28:29.:28:32.

teams where you are.
