Europe's most wanted fugitive for the terror attacks in Paris

:00:12.:00:14.

is captured after a raid on a flat in Brussels.

:00:15.:00:19.

Earlier this week Salah Abdeslam evaded a joint French-Belgian

:00:20.:00:21.

Tonight, he is wounded and in police custody.

:00:22.:00:24.

Heavily armed police surrounded the flat where he was holed up.

:00:25.:00:33.

His night in police custody. Witnesses told one local that they

:00:34.:00:42.

sell and man running down the street, he was shot in the league

:00:43.:00:46.

and he fell down. Now they say that Salah Abdeslam is in their custody.

:00:47.:00:52.

This is the scene live. The Chancellor says he'll consult

:00:53.:01:03.

disability charities. After the sugary drinks tax -

:01:11.:01:12.

Victoria Pendleton takes on the challenge of

:01:13.:01:13.

a lifetime at Cheltenham. Coming up in Sportsday later

in the hour on BBC News... We'll be in Paris as we look

:01:17.:01:18.

ahead to the final weekend in the Six

:01:19.:01:21.

Nations Championship. Good evening and welcome

:01:22.:01:34.

to the BBC News at Six. Europe's most wanted man,

:01:35.:01:37.

a suspected fugitive from the Paris terror attacks, has been

:01:38.:01:40.

captured after a shoot-out 26-year-old Salah Abdeslam has been

:01:41.:01:41.

on the run since the shootings in Paris in November,

:01:42.:01:47.

which left 130 people dead. He evaded police earlier this week,

:01:48.:01:50.

just his fingerprints in a Brussels apartment showed that

:01:51.:01:53.

he had been there. Tonight, the police got

:01:54.:02:03.

their suspect, who is believed to have played a key

:02:04.:02:04.

role in the attacks. Let's go live to Damian

:02:05.:02:07.

Grammaticas in Molenbeek, As I mince is rehearsing to the

:02:08.:02:14.

scene, police sources in Brussels were already saying they had got

:02:15.:02:20.

their man. Salah Abdeslam, the prime suspect in the Paris attacks,

:02:21.:02:24.

sources said, shot in the league and in custody. Filmed by an eyewitness,

:02:25.:02:29.

police massing as they hunted him. Mid-afternoon in the Molenbeek

:02:30.:02:35.

district, dozens of units descended. There was gunfire. One witness said

:02:36.:02:40.

he saw a man being chased down the road, shot and then falling. For

:02:41.:02:45.

Belgian police this seems to have been a considerable success, Salah

:02:46.:02:49.

Abdeslam, the prime suspect from the Paris attacks, wounded in the league

:02:50.:02:55.

and then arrested at the top of the street, following those police

:02:56.:02:57.

investigations that have been going on since the Paris attacks which

:02:58.:03:01.

have traced him to this location. The Belgian Prime Minister rushed

:03:02.:03:05.

out of the summit of European leaders taking place across time to

:03:06.:03:09.

be briefed on the operation. He and his French counterpart were

:03:10.:03:13.

following events closely. Salah Abdeslam had managed to evade police

:03:14.:03:18.

as November, prosecutors say he was a key player in the Paris attacks.

:03:19.:03:23.

Earlier this week his fingerprints are fined after police raided this

:03:24.:03:27.

house in Brussels. It is thought he might have escaped out of the back

:03:28.:03:30.

window as another man fired officers to keep them pinned down. Police

:03:31.:03:34.

were clearly on the Trail of Salah Abdeslam and closing in, and

:03:35.:03:37.

neighbours had no idea he was in the house. I opened my door. To pick up

:03:38.:03:44.

my son at school. And I heard a lot of policemen yelling at me. Go home!

:03:45.:03:55.

And actually, then, the shooting had just happened, the first one. And

:03:56.:04:00.

the operation was happening just in front of me. I really did not

:04:01.:04:06.

realise that. Salah Abdeslam has been taken for treatment for his

:04:07.:04:10.

wounds but police sources said no officers were injured in the

:04:11.:04:13.

operation today. After months of painstaking work, this was a success

:04:14.:04:18.

for Belgian and French police and has raised tensions in Molenbeek

:04:19.:04:22.

this evening, riot police brought in to do with groups draw on by the

:04:23.:04:26.

presence of summoning officers on the streets here. On this side of

:04:27.:04:34.

the cord and, things are,, there is a police car coming through here but

:04:35.:04:38.

what is extraordinary is that the capture of Salah Abdeslam alive will

:04:39.:04:44.

be a major step forward for the investigations following the Paris

:04:45.:04:47.

attacks. At the top of the street there are reports there might be one

:04:48.:04:51.

man still holed up inside the building but for Belgian police,

:04:52.:04:54.

there have been claims that Salah Abdeslam might even have fled to

:04:55.:04:59.

Syria, this is extraordinary, they have tracked him for months,

:05:00.:05:04.

following his associates, 100 house searches, leading to the events here

:05:05.:05:05.

and his arrest this evening. Damian Grammaticas in Molenbeek,

:05:06.:05:09.

thank you. Well, let's speak to our

:05:10.:05:13.

Security Correspondent, Very significant that this suspect

:05:14.:05:14.

has been captured alive. This is very significant because

:05:15.:05:23.

Salah Abdeslam was Europe's most wanted, he was the one person

:05:24.:05:27.

directly involved in those attacks on Paris who was still on the run.

:05:28.:05:31.

He was directly involved in planning the logistics, he had driven around

:05:32.:05:36.

some of the attackers that night and it is thought he might have been

:05:37.:05:39.

intending to carry out an attack but had backed out at the last minute

:05:40.:05:44.

and then this extraordinary story of fleeing across the border into

:05:45.:05:47.

Belgium, stopped by police at one point and this manhunt which does

:05:48.:05:52.

raise questions for the Belgian authorities as to why it took so

:05:53.:05:55.

long to find him, especially if in all that time he was in Belgium. But

:05:56.:06:01.

yes, he was caught alive, that gives the possibility that he can be

:06:02.:06:06.

interrogated and if you decide to talk, he can provide a wealth of

:06:07.:06:09.

information about the attacks and the network and the planning and

:06:10.:06:12.

about who helped him afterwards to stay on the run. That could be

:06:13.:06:17.

hugely important not just in understanding what happened in the

:06:18.:06:20.

past in Paris, but also in preventing future attacks. Gordon,

:06:21.:06:21.

thank you. European leaders have agreed a deal

:06:22.:06:24.

with Turkey aimed at stopping the flow of migrants

:06:25.:06:26.

across the Aegean Sea It means that from midnight

:06:27.:06:28.

on Sunday, all migrants who reach Greece would be sent back to Turkey

:06:29.:06:32.

if their asylum claim is rejected. In return, thousands of Syrian

:06:33.:06:35.

refugees already in Turkey would be Our Europe Editor,

:06:36.:06:38.

Katya Adler, has the latest. The EU is in a hurry

:06:39.:06:46.

to solve the migrant crisis. By now affecting each

:06:47.:06:50.

one of its 28 leaders. Here comes the man they hope can

:06:51.:06:58.

solve their problems, right here, right now,

:06:59.:07:01.

with today's deal. The Turkish Prime Minister,

:07:02.:07:03.

representing his powerful, unpredictable president,

:07:04.:07:06.

here in Brussels today. Today, we have finally

:07:07.:07:10.

reached an agreement The agreement aimed

:07:11.:07:12.

at stopping the flow of irregular migration

:07:13.:07:19.

via Turkey through Europe. Sounds sensible and

:07:20.:07:23.

straightforward, but in reality, Most migrant boats leave

:07:24.:07:25.

from their beaches. The EU is spending a lot of money,

:07:26.:07:36.

time and credibility, trying to get Turkey's commitment

:07:37.:07:40.

to crack down on people smugglers and to send back

:07:41.:07:43.

migrants using their Commitment now achieved,

:07:44.:07:45.

it would seem. There is no Turkish future

:07:46.:07:50.

without the EU and there is no EU future without Turkey

:07:51.:07:53.

so there is a need for cooperation. But in deals like these,

:07:54.:07:58.

some partners are more The migrant crisis

:07:59.:08:00.

has divided Europe, frightened its people,

:08:01.:08:07.

emboldened populist politicians who pose a challenge

:08:08.:08:09.

to the leaders now in Brussels. In desperation, they are

:08:10.:08:13.

agreeing to Turkey's steep conditions, with all the ifs,

:08:14.:08:20.

buts and maybes typical But whatever the wording,

:08:21.:08:23.

the deal will have deep underlying Is it legal for the EU

:08:24.:08:27.

to throw refugees and asylum No, under international

:08:28.:08:32.

and European law. Each individual case

:08:33.:08:37.

needs to be heard first, or Turkey needs to be declared

:08:38.:08:41.

a so-called safe country for these How do you get tens of thousands

:08:42.:08:44.

of people back to Turkey, by plane, by sea, and who is

:08:45.:08:52.

going to pay for it? And the women, children,

:08:53.:08:56.

the elderly as well as the young men, all of whom have

:08:57.:09:02.

risked their lives, all of whom are desperate,

:09:03.:09:04.

will they go quietly? Can Europe, should Europe

:09:05.:09:06.

stomach the scenes? So as you see, there

:09:07.:09:09.

are moral issues too. Turkey's president is

:09:10.:09:13.

increasingly autocratic, argument undemocratic,

:09:14.:09:17.

and Turkey doesn't fully recognise the Geneva Convemtion on human

:09:18.:09:26.

rights, so should the EU be doing a deal with Turkey, offering it

:09:27.:09:29.

sweeteners and sending vulnerable EU lawyers and diplomats

:09:30.:09:31.

are now performing contortions to try to get

:09:32.:09:34.

around these issues. This migrant boat was intercepted

:12:51.:12:53.

to our Europe Editor, There have been deals before and

they have fallen, will this one work? As we know from EU deals,

:13:08.:13:13.

agreement is one thing but honouring those agreements is quite something

:13:14.:13:17.

else. Trust between the EU and Turkey is not strong. Even if it

:13:18.:13:21.

does work out, this will not be the end to the migrant crisis. We heard

this evening run the host of the summit, the Council President, that

the deal is not a silver bullet and what about struggling Greece? Left

:14:09.:14:10.

As pressure mounts on the Chancellor about his planned disability benefit

:14:11.:14:13.

cuts, the Government says it will consult with charities to make

:14:14.:14:15.

sure the most vulnerable are protected.

:14:16.:14:17.

Nonetheless, it says it's committed to making the controversial

:14:18.:14:20.

A number of Tory MPs, Labour and disability groups oppose

:14:21.:14:26.

the changes to what are known as Personal Independence

:14:27.:14:28.

Here's our Political Correspondent, Alex Forsyth.

:14:29.:14:36.

Has a whole? Some of his own MPs are starting to think so. Costa

:14:37.:14:45.

disability benefits have angered more than just campaigners. Today,

:14:46.:14:49.

the Chancellor said they were needed and the most vulnerable would be

:14:50.:14:53.

protected. But he suggested the exact proposal had not been Dale

:14:54.:14:57.

Steyn. The disability budget is going up, we have to make sure that

:14:58.:15:03.

it goes to those who need help most. Over the coming months we will be

:15:04.:15:07.

talking to colleagues, to disability charities, to make sure we get this

:15:08.:15:12.

absolutely right. The plan to change confirmed in the budget is to

:15:13.:15:14.

Personal Independence Payment 's, designed to help people with ongoing

:15:15.:15:19.

costs associated with disability. The criteria for assessing peoples

:15:20.:15:23.

ability carry out daily tasks is being tightened. Saving the Treasury

:15:24.:15:29.

?1.3 billion a year. The most severely disabled will not be

:15:30.:15:33.

affected at around 370,000 people could lose out. Under this change,

:15:34.:15:40.

if you need a raised toilet because you are so disabled you cannot sit

:15:41.:15:44.

on a normal one, you will lose money. The government has been

:15:45.:15:48.

criticised in the past for its efforts to curb welfare spending. It

:15:49.:15:53.

had to row back on cuts to tax credits. Now, Labour is determined

:15:54.:15:58.

to force another U-turn, despite ministers saying they are committed

:15:59.:16:01.

to the reforms. It is interesting that the government language has

:16:02.:16:06.

changed from will do too now saying they are consulting and we will

:16:07.:16:10.

force a vote on this, we are launching a petition against this.

:16:11.:16:13.

The government says legislation on these changes is to months off but I

:16:14.:16:18.

agree with these proposals or not, the problem for some Tory MPs is the

:16:19.:16:21.

way they were presented. Cutting disability benefits in the same

:16:22.:16:26.

budget as tax for middle earners was reduced. One minister questioned

:16:27.:16:29.

whether George Osborne was losing his touch. And from the government

:16:30.:16:35.

backbenchers, a growing number are willing to speak out. The vast

:16:36.:16:38.

majority of people as I understand it will not see their attempt to

:16:39.:16:44.

payments affected by this. But there is clearly a challenge in how this

:16:45.:16:49.

message has been got across. Where is the sunshine? It is looking

:16:50.:16:54.

gloomy two days on from the budget, disappointing for the Chancellor

:16:55.:16:57.

used to praise from colleagues for his competence. Now facing

:16:58.:16:58.

discontent. Europe's most wanted fugitive

:16:59.:17:02.

for the terror attacks in Paris is captured after a raid

:17:03.:17:09.

on a flat in Brussels. And whether you're on the sofa

year's BBC Sport Relief. Switching saddles in style. Victoria

:17:21.:17:36.

Pendleton write clear at Cheltenham. Don Cossack wins the Gold cup will.

:17:37.:17:45.

Following the tax imposed by the chancellor on sugary drinks

:17:46.:17:48.

this week, there have been calls to reduce the high amount of sugar

:17:49.:17:51.

And not just cakes and biscuits - but also low fat yoghurts,

:17:52.:17:55.

Here's our special correspondent Lucy Manning.

:17:56.:18:01.

Emma Batton does her weekly shop in Cambridge, a healthy one,

:18:02.:18:07.

she thinks, but the food industry and supermarkets don't

:18:08.:18:09.

always make it easy in the fight against obesity, as she discovers.

:18:10.:18:24.

Those soups say one in five, one of the daily five as well.

:18:25.:18:27.

Does that make you think that you are

:18:28.:18:30.

Oh, really? That's loads.

:18:31.:18:35.

And 1.1 grams of salt, 20%

:18:36.:18:37.

That's a lot more than I would have guessed.

:18:38.:18:41.

It's the offers that tempt, but after the sugar tax

:18:42.:18:45.

Each portion is 12% of your sugar intake, so 11 grams of sugar

:18:46.:18:48.

We always get swayed by the offers, yeah.

:18:49.:18:51.

Free bowl, free spoon, I think that's a good deal.

:18:52.:18:54.

It would be a shame if the Government work to stop

:18:55.:18:56.

The offers do help us get through the week on a lower budget

:18:57.:19:01.

I think the cereal aisle is definitely a children's aisle.

:19:02.:19:05.

It was naughty that they put the chocolate in the same place.

:19:06.:19:08.

And with marketing that attracts the youngest of customers

:19:09.:19:10.

that is also something that might have to change.

:19:11.:19:13.

She's fairly flat on the sugar tax but thinks

:19:14.:19:16.

companies need to do more across all foods.

:19:17.:19:21.

If it's your product, I think you need to be

:19:22.:19:24.

So they need to be thinking wisely about putting in so much sugar that

:19:25.:19:28.

Watching what's going in the trolley is Cambridge University's

:19:29.:19:36.

England has the highest rates of price

:19:37.:19:39.

It increases what we buy by about 20%.

:19:40.:19:43.

And these promotions are more likely to be

:19:44.:19:45.

So she's fallen right into that trap.

:19:46.:19:54.

Children under three get 27% of their added sugar from soft

:19:55.:19:59.

drinks, the rest comes from other sources

:20:00.:20:01.

including cereals, biscuits and sweets.

:20:02.:20:05.

Older children get 30%, so 70% from elsewhere.

:20:06.:20:09.

And while teenagers consume more sugar from

:20:10.:20:11.

soft drinks, most still comes from other places.

:20:12.:20:15.

There will also be demands on the supermarkets and on the food

:20:16.:20:18.

industry to discourage the type of shopping and eating

:20:19.:20:21.

And after the sugar tax, some big retailers

:20:22.:20:36.

We need to look wider across food, we need

:20:37.:20:40.

to look at maybe taking fats and salts and

:20:41.:20:42.

sugar out of our products as well is just

:20:43.:20:44.

sugar, although it is important to concentrate on sugar.

:20:45.:20:49.

But our experience, looking at previous initiatives like salt

:20:50.:20:57.

production is that pushed the unfortunately we may need mandatory

:20:58.:21:02.

targets. The government say the obesity target will eventually come,

:21:03.:21:03.

with much still to do. A year ago, Olympic cycling champion

:21:04.:21:08.

Victoria Pendleton had Today she exceeded all expectations

:21:09.:21:11.

at one of horse racing's greatest festivals -

:21:12.:21:14.

Cheltenham - crossing the line a respectable fifth in the very

:21:15.:21:16.

challenging amateur race. Our sports correspondent Andy Swiss

:21:17.:21:19.

is in Cheltenham for us now , It was, yes. Victoria Pendleton has

:21:20.:21:33.

had a lot of doubters, some have questioned whether she was good

:21:34.:21:36.

enough to race here, whether she would even be dangerous. There was

:21:37.:21:41.

no fairy tale win but a very respectable fifth silenced those

:21:42.:21:49.

doubters will stop the first bumpy ride of Victoria Pendleton's day,

:21:50.:21:52.

simply getting in the Cheltenham. Are you excited? Can't wait! That

:21:53.:22:00.

slightly nervous laugh said it all. Some book is not she was more likely

:22:01.:22:05.

to fall off, as she set off on Pacha Du Polder with understandable

:22:06.:22:10.

caution. She was in last place as they left the first but as the race

:22:11.:22:15.

wore on, she grew in confidence and pace, surging through the pack to

:22:16.:22:19.

finish a very creditable fifth. The smile and a thumbs up said it all,

:22:20.:22:26.

the doubters silenced in some style. I am thrilled, if it had been

:22:27.:22:29.

another two furlongs could have got in the mix but it happened so

:22:30.:22:33.

quickly, it was almost like my first all over again. I enjoyed every

:22:34.:22:38.

second of it. It was a complete rush. The biggest prize of the day

:22:39.:22:44.

was the Gold cup, home hopes lay with cue card but three out, they

:22:45.:22:48.

came crashing down, both horse and jockey thankfully unhurt. That left

:22:49.:22:55.

the way for favourite Cossack to deliver yet another victory here for

:22:56.:22:59.

Ireland delightful jockey Brian Cooper and trainer, as Cheltenham

:23:00.:23:05.

saluted its heroes, but this was a day not just about the winning but

:23:06.:23:06.

about the taking part. Now will you be enjoying this year's

:23:07.:23:14.

BBC Sport relief from the comfort of your sofa or will you be among

:23:15.:23:17.

the thousands of people donning running shoes or cycling shorts

:23:18.:23:20.

to help raise money? Colin Paterson is at

:23:21.:23:22.

London's Olympic Park, where much of the action is

:23:23.:23:25.

taking place tonight. The Olympic Park was the sight of

:23:26.:23:33.

some of Britain's greatest ever sporting moments, tonight we will

:23:34.:23:37.

see Seppi Raworth in lycra on a bike, that's not the only highlight.

:23:38.:23:43.

You are presenting the show, what are some of the highlights? I am not

:23:44.:23:48.

sure, I was told was sports personality of the above I got and

:23:49.:23:52.

I'm resenting with this fellow. It is predominantly about raising money

:23:53.:23:59.

for needy causes, not just in the UK but around some of the poorest

:24:00.:24:02.

countries in the world the people who really need it, and we will have

:24:03.:24:07.

a lot of fun in the process, has had the Titans, between Sir Steve

:24:08.:24:14.

Redgrave, Freddie Flintoff... This man has managed to get Peter Crouch

:24:15.:24:18.

into a dress! Not for the first time but this is the first time it will

:24:19.:24:24.

be televised. It will be with me, Peter Crouch, Mickey Flannigan,

:24:25.:24:30.

Peter Crouch will become Petra Crouch for one evening only, and we

:24:31.:24:37.

will have the return of Some Mothers Do Have Them. Frank Spencer, doing

:24:38.:24:44.

his own stunts and he does appear on roller skates. Thank you very much.

:24:45.:24:53.

Back to our top story, the capture of the main suspect in the Paris

:24:54.:25:01.

terror attacks. Sala Abdeslam was captured in Brussels. There have

:25:02.:25:05.

been some developments? In the last 15 minutes, we have heard two very

:25:06.:25:10.

large explosions from just up the street here. One following the other

:25:11.:25:15.

very closely. We heard before that there may have been one man still

:25:16.:25:19.

holed up there, police were calling on him to hand himself in, so

:25:20.:25:22.

clearly operations are still going on there. Also suggestions that the

:25:23.:25:29.

house they came here to target was one linked to Salah Abdeslam, to a

:25:30.:25:34.

friend of his. Now he has been captured alive, the key thing would

:25:35.:25:37.

be for investigators to determine his role in the Paris attacks. They

:25:38.:25:43.

believe he played a key role in the logistics, the support, he may have

:25:44.:25:47.

dropped off three of the bombers who attacked the stadium, there was a

:25:48.:25:51.

question, was he meant to be a suicide bomber, did he back out the

:25:52.:25:55.

plan to carry out another attack in another district of Paris, and what

:25:56.:25:59.

role does he have in the organisation? Investigators have

:26:00.:26:04.

many leads to follow up, now they have him in their custody. Thank

:26:05.:26:05.

you. The day-to-day variations have been

:26:06.:26:22.

huge this week. Some places enjoying beautiful sunshine, the Highlands of

:26:23.:26:25.

Scotland, but many other parts of the UK were rather glum and rather

:26:26.:26:32.

cold. It is these cloudy but dry conditions which will dominate

:26:33.:26:37.

through the course of the week. Wales and south-west England, a lot

:26:38.:26:42.

of sunshine today, got to 14 degrees in Wales but elsewhere temperatures

:26:43.:26:45.

were struggling under the cloud, the cloud will continue to drift

:26:46.:26:50.

overnight tonight, northern Scotland holding out with some breaks in the

:26:51.:26:55.

cloud, we could see a touch of frost but for most prices, the cloud will

:26:56.:26:59.

keep temperatures up, the odd spot of drizzle but most places dry. Some

:27:00.:27:05.

sunny spells tomorrow across parts of northern Scotland and overall,

:27:06.:27:11.

not quite as gloomy as today but one area which will be cloudy tomorrow

:27:12.:27:18.

is Wales and south-west England. As a result, temperatures not as high.

:27:19.:27:22.

Today in the Midlands will start at three or four so it's an improvement

:27:23.:27:27.

tomorrow, but predominantly gloomy. Something a bit brighter up north,

:27:28.:27:32.

perhaps a few breaks in the cloud and a hint of sunshine. As we go

:27:33.:27:38.

through Saturday night and into Sunday, a bit more in the way of

:27:39.:27:42.

showers across the far north, elsewhere, the odd spot of drizzle

:27:43.:27:46.

through Saturday night but generally, just try and cloudy and

:27:47.:27:49.

as a result we should be Frost free. On Sunday, eastern Scotland, hint of

:27:50.:27:59.

sunshine here, but the majority, cloudy and dry, bit of sunshine does

:28:00.:28:00.

make the difference. If you want to follow the developing

:28:01.:28:11.

story in that suburb of Brussels where the main suspect, fugitive

:28:12.:28:16.

suspect of the Paris attacks, has been captured and there is still a

:28:17.:28:20.

police operation going on, you can follow that on the BBC News Channel.

:28:21.:28:23.

Goodbye from me
