Celebrations in Windsor as the Queen turns 90 -

:00:00.:00:08.

the first British monarch to reach such a milestone

:00:09.:00:13.

Thousands filled the streets in the town here to greet the Queen

:00:14.:00:25.

on her birthday walkabout - among them some also

:00:26.:00:27.

The Queen spoke to me, asked me my age.

:00:28.:00:33.

Never really imagined I would meet her.

:00:34.:00:43.

I never imagined I would be 90, let's face it!

:00:44.:00:50.

Across the UK traditional gun salutes to mark the Queen's nine

She shall be to the happiness of England an aged Princess.

:00:57.:01:06.

Many days shall see her and yet no day without a deed to crown it.

Also on tonight's programme: The government is ready to take

:01:16.:01:17.

Taxpayers would own up to a quarter of the company and a new owner

:01:18.:01:23.

could also get hundreds of millions in support.

:01:43.:01:47.

as fans look set to stay away from their Premier League match

:01:48.:01:50.

Good evening and welcome to the BBC news at 6 from Windsor

:01:51.:02:18.

Thousands of people - young and old - came here to line

:02:19.:02:24.

A few had even camped out all night just to catch a glimpse of Britain's

:02:25.:02:27.

the sound of happy birthday rang out through the streets beneath

:02:28.:02:36.

on the day the Queen reached another milestone in her long life.

:02:37.:02:51.

She may be a Queen who lives in a castle.

:02:52.:02:54.

Close by, as ever, the Duke of Edinburgh.

:02:55.:03:45.

It certainly does cut. there was that prerequisite

:03:46.:03:55.

It had been baked specially for the Queen by Nadia Hussain,

:03:56.:03:57.

the winner of the BBC's The Great British Bake Off.

:03:58.:04:01.

The one thing I never set my sights on was meeting the Queen

:04:02.:04:04.

I got to bake her her 90th birthday cake, and that's monumental.

:04:05.:04:12.

I didn't ever imagine that I would ever do something like that.

:04:13.:04:16.

And there were other 90-year-olds to meet,

:04:17.:04:19.

men and women whose lives have moved along in parallel

:04:20.:04:21.

I never really imagine that I would meet her.

:04:22.:04:27.

I never imagined I would be 90, let's face it!

:04:28.:04:31.

She was in the bombing of London, so was I.

:04:32.:04:34.

And then she was called up, and so was I.

:04:35.:04:46.

So we've had a long, long life together.

:04:47.:04:48.

As the Queen stepped out in Windsor, gun salutes were fired in

:04:49.:04:51.

Buckingham Palace issued this photograph of the Queen two

:04:52.:05:02.

of her grandchildren and her five great grandchildren -

:05:03.:05:05.

the youngest of whom, Princess Charlotte, is sitting

:05:06.:05:08.

on her lap, next to her brother, Prince George.

:05:09.:05:11.

The wider world has also been paying its birthday tributes,

:05:12.:05:16.

led in the House of Commons by the Prime Minister,

:05:17.:05:19.

who recalled the 64 years the Queen has been on the throne.

:05:20.:05:23.

Throughout it all, as the sands of culture shift and the tides

:05:24.:05:26.

of politics ebb and flow, Her Majesty has been steadfast.

:05:27.:05:30.

A rock of strength for our nation, for our Commonwealth,

:05:31.:05:32.

and on many occasions, for the whole world.

:05:33.:05:36.

The Leader of the Opposition is a Republican.

:05:37.:05:40.

Today we are talking about a highly respected

:05:41.:05:45.

And, Mr Speaker, whatever differing views that people across this

:05:46.:05:53.

country have about the institution, the vast majority share an opinion

:05:54.:05:58.

that Her Majesty has served this country and has overwhelming support

:05:59.:06:02.

with a clear sense of public service and public duty.

:06:03.:06:05.

In a BBC documentary tonight, the Queen will be seen reminiscing

:06:06.:06:08.

In a separate broadcast, Prince Charles paid tribute

:06:09.:06:15.

to his mother, quoting lines from Shakespeare's Henry VIII.

:06:16.:06:18.

She shall be to the happiness of England an aged princess.

:06:19.:06:22.

And yet, no day without a deed to crown it.

:06:23.:06:32.

Back in Windsor, on this first day of her tenth decade,

:06:33.:06:37.

Elizabeth II was doing what she has done for so much of her long

:06:38.:06:40.

A greatly respected monarch at close quarters with her people, receiving

:06:41.:06:44.

Nicholas Witchell, BBC News, Windsor.

:06:45.:06:51.

Let's just show you some live pictures now from

:06:52.:06:53.

Large crowds are gathering again tonight - because in about an hour's

:06:54.:07:00.

time the Queen will leave this castle again for her last public

:07:01.:07:04.

appearance of the day to light this beacon -

:07:05.:07:06.

the first in a series that will be lit tonight

:07:07.:07:08.

Our Royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell is here with me now.

:07:09.:07:15.

there are huge crowds again tonight. The Queen has had an incredibly warm

:07:16.:07:23.

reception. It is funny, the underlying mood of the country has

:07:24.:07:28.

been best summed up by the most prominent Republican, Jeremy Corbyn,

:07:29.:07:33.

saying never mind what you think of the institution, the vast majority

:07:34.:07:37.

of people think she has done a remarkably good job of service to

:07:38.:07:41.

the country which underlines a good monarch unites opinion rather than

:07:42.:07:45.

divides it stop she enjoyed the Walkabout and entered into the

:07:46.:07:49.

spirit. It underlines what robust health she is in at the age of 90.

:07:50.:07:56.

There are issues, there are bound to be, climbing stairs is more of a

:07:57.:08:01.

challenge, staff adapt her programme. To take account of her

:08:02.:08:05.

age, but nothing dramatic. The day is not over. There is the beacon

:08:06.:08:12.

lighting and the dinner hosted by the Prince of Wales and attended by

:08:13.:08:19.

60 family and close friends. Windsor Castle is where the Queen wanted to

:08:20.:08:22.

celebrate. It is where she feels most at home.

:08:23.:08:25.

But so to is the Sandringham estate in her Norfolk,

:08:26.:08:27.

Just a few miles from it is the town of King's Lynn

:08:28.:08:31.

which is said by some to contain the highest number

:08:32.:08:33.

Reeta Chakrabarti went along to speak to some of them.

:08:34.:08:39.

A stone's throw from Sandringham, King's Lynn has always been one

:08:40.:08:42.

Its schools, hospitals and fire stations and the town hall have

:08:43.:08:46.

VOICEOVER: In King's Lynn from a building that stood

:08:47.:08:50.

the word is proclaimed, Elizabeth is Queen.

:08:51.:08:56.

At the beginning of her reign, as the town's name suggests,

:08:57.:08:59.

King's Lynn has retained strong links with loyalty.

:09:00.:09:05.

These are the visitors books from when the Queen visited each time?

:09:06.:09:09.

For the former mayor and present council leader,

:09:10.:09:13.

meeting the Queen has one of he has been one of the huge

:09:14.:09:16.

I've met her three times, twice in the last five years.

:09:17.:09:22.

I think to dedicate one's whole life to that form of duty is remarkable.

:09:23.:09:25.

Early in her reign, the young Queen visited

:09:26.:09:31.

A tradition has now been established.

:09:32.:09:39.

Every year the sixth former with the best results has a private

:09:40.:09:42.

It was a surreal experience because the house is magnificent

:09:43.:09:47.

and you are meeting the Queen, which is like a figure you never

:09:48.:09:51.

And Freddie also met the Queen when he was in junior school.

:09:52.:09:58.

She has a great sense of humour as well.

:09:59.:10:02.

I was saying, I might see you in a couple of years

:10:03.:10:09.

It is such a royal town, everyone seems to have

:10:10.:10:17.

going in search of someone who hasn't.

:10:18.:10:21.

Rumour has it King's Lynn has the largest number of people

:10:22.:10:23.

Yes, not just around Sandringham, even in the streets.

:10:24.:10:28.

The Queen is popular here because she seems

:10:29.:10:37.

to give as much attention to ordinary life as ceremony.

:10:38.:10:40.

The bond between monarch and town looks set to endure.

:10:41.:10:50.

Many people met the Queen in Windsor today. The celebrations public and

:10:51.:10:57.

private will carry on into the evening. I will be back later in the

:10:58.:11:02.

programme on this landmark birthday for the Queen.

:11:03.:11:06.

Britain's struggling steel industry has been thrown a lifeline today -

:11:07.:11:09.

the government has made it clear that it's ready to take

:11:10.:11:11.

a 25% stake in Tata Steel's operations.

:11:12.:11:14.

Whoever buys the company will also be offered hundreds of millions

:11:15.:11:17.

of pounds of taxpayers' cash to ease the transition.

:11:18.:11:19.

Let's join Hywell Griffith in Port Talbot where 4,000

:11:20.:11:21.

Yes, for weeks workers have wondered how far the government would be

:11:22.:11:36.

prepared to go and today they found out, not just hundreds of millions

:11:37.:11:41.

of pounds of public money put into a loss-making business but a lot of

:11:42.:11:45.

political capital as the government suggested it could as an option go

:11:46.:11:51.

into a part nationalisation of the British industry, something we have

:11:52.:11:55.

not seen in decades on that scale. Could you, me and every British

:11:56.:12:00.

taxpayer could soon own a part of this? The government pledged public

:12:01.:12:05.

money to keep these fires burning, saying it could take a 25% share

:12:06.:12:11.

alongside a private buyer. The government does not want a role in

:12:12.:12:16.

running it, and it is about the priority we are showing to attract

:12:17.:12:19.

an investor. Any investor will be able to see the numbers the

:12:20.:12:23.

government has made available. For a workforce tired of promises, it

:12:24.:12:28.

feels like something more than hot air. We have been told things in

:12:29.:12:34.

meetings that yes there is taxpayers' money may be available.

:12:35.:12:39.

No detail. To get the government and Welsh Assembly to commit to

:12:40.:12:43.

something is great. What state support would be on offer? A 25%

:12:44.:12:49.

stake in the steel business would be shared between British and Welsh

:12:50.:12:53.

governments. An alternative would be to help finance the debt of any

:12:54.:12:59.

buyer, potentially worth hundreds of millions. But ministers would not be

:13:00.:13:03.

taking control of the company. It would be a commercial investment. At

:13:04.:13:09.

a workers meeting import Talbot, it brings hope that more buyers may

:13:10.:13:15.

come forward. Some like Vince Lewis have spent over 30 years at the

:13:16.:13:18.

local works. This will giving courage to some of the big players

:13:19.:13:24.

in the industry that they will be supported. We have not heard

:13:25.:13:27.

details, but with luck, this will give confidence to the major firms

:13:28.:13:34.

that they can invest import Talbot and there will be a long-term future

:13:35.:13:38.

here. The question many workers are left with is why this offer was not

:13:39.:13:43.

made sooner, before Tata Steel put the business up for sale. If

:13:44.:13:48.

hundreds of millions of public money is available now, should the money

:13:49.:13:52.

had been offered to them? The answer may be because it wanted to avoid a

:13:53.:13:57.

repeat of this, the part nationalisation of British Leyland

:13:58.:14:02.

in the 70s did not end well. Some thought this deal could go the same

:14:03.:14:07.

way. Tata Steel has looked for a bias and 2014 and if they cannot

:14:08.:14:11.

find one in the open market it means the only way the government can help

:14:12.:14:14.

is to sweeten the deal and if we are doing that it means we are propping

:14:15.:14:18.

up an unproductive industry and doing that it means we are propping

:14:19.:14:24.

productive. If it helps find a buyer, the workers know the next few

:14:25.:14:28.

years will be hard. We may soon all have a stake in their future also.

:14:29.:14:32.

With me now is our business editor Simon Jack.

:14:33.:14:34.

A lot of money and a surprising move from the government. It is a big

:14:35.:14:43.

moment. It is not a U-turn because they did not rule out the option

:14:44.:14:48.

will stop the idea of a government taking a stake in manufacturing

:14:49.:14:53.

industry runs counter to every instinct of a Conservative

:14:54.:14:57.

government. You have to reach back to the 1970s British Leyland and

:14:58.:15:05.

Rolls-Royce find similar situations. Taking a stake plus hundreds of

:15:06.:15:09.

millions of loans is an enormous carrot to flush out a buyer and that

:15:10.:15:13.

is the key thing. None of this happens unless a buyer is found, and

:15:14.:15:18.

the government admitted that although the hundreds of millions on

:15:19.:15:23.

commercial terms of loans are OK, taking a 25% stake is a great area

:15:24.:15:28.

when it comes to EU state aid. A buyer needs to be found and the

:15:29.:15:31.

justice of the Sea off the move also. -- legitimacy.

:15:32.:15:36.

The Queen becomes for first reigning British monarch to reach 90

:15:37.:15:42.

as she celebrates her birthday in Windsor.

:15:43.:15:45.

The singer and musician Prince has been found dead in America.

:15:46.:16:18.

Two men have been found guilty at the Old Bailey of conspiring

:16:19.:16:21.

to import and sell automatic weapons - following what's believed to be

:16:22.:16:24.

the largest such seizure ever made on the UK mainland.

:16:25.:16:34.

The weapons were said to be worth ?100,000.

:16:35.:16:40.

Three others had already pleaded guilty

:16:41.:16:42.

to smuggling the weapons into the country.

:16:43.:16:43.

Our Home Affairs Correspondent Daniel Sandford

:16:44.:16:45.

In an extraordinary security operation, heavily armed police

:16:46.:16:50.

officers have been stationed around the Old Bailey throughout this

:16:51.:16:53.

A trial concerning the biggest ever seizure of guns in

:16:54.:17:00.

22 fully automatic assault rifles, nine Scorpion

:17:01.:17:04.

submachineguns and one and a half thousand rounds of ammunition.

:17:05.:17:10.

These were weapons that could cause mass casualties, both types of

:17:11.:17:12.

weapon can fire 800 rounds a minute and you could imagine the

:17:13.:17:17.

devastation that would cause if they were in the wrong hands.

:17:18.:17:20.

Harry Shilling was the leader of the gun

:17:21.:17:24.

smuggling gang, helped by Michael Defraine and Richard Rye.

:17:25.:17:32.

They'd persuaded boat enthusiasts to help them.

:17:33.:17:34.

The guns were shipped across the Channel from France in this

:17:35.:17:37.

The next day on the River Medway in Kent, surveillance

:17:38.:17:40.

officers filmed the gang on loading heavy bags containing the weapons,

:17:41.:17:44.

heaving them into an anonymous white van.

:17:45.:17:46.

Moments later, armed police moved in and arrested the men on the

:17:47.:17:49.

And they seized an enormous Arsenal of fully automatic guns, 30

:17:50.:17:55.

Some of the guns had come from this shop, 800 miles

:17:56.:18:01.

converted back into lethal killing machines.

:18:02.:18:11.

One such gun from the same shop had made it into the hands of

:18:12.:18:15.

the man who killed four hostages at a Jewish supermarket in Paris

:18:16.:18:18.

He can be seen with the gun in this video, released

:18:19.:18:26.

The National Crime Agency has established that at least

:18:27.:18:31.

some of the guns came from this shop in Slovakia,

:18:32.:18:39.

but at that point, they

:18:40.:18:40.

were perfectly legal yet committed weapons.

:18:41.:18:42.

What happened next is that

:18:43.:18:45.

somebody, and we don't know who, reactivated them, making them

:18:46.:18:47.

When the National Crime Agency arrested

:18:48.:18:52.

gang leader Harry Shilling in the car park of Homebase, he had a panic

:18:53.:18:56.

Richard Wright, by the window, was caught in the local

:18:57.:19:06.

The huge haul of weapons that in the wrong hands could have

:19:07.:19:10.

wreaked havoc in Britain, all safely in the hands

:19:11.:19:12.

The musician Prince has died in Minneapolis.

:19:13.:19:24.

He was 57 and had been struggling with illness for a while.

:19:25.:19:27.

Our entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba is here with more details.

:19:28.:19:41.

We had a statement that Prince had been suffering ill-health and had to

:19:42.:19:48.

cancel concerts. He went to hospital at the weekend. There have been

:19:49.:19:54.

rumours that a death in the last couple of hours at Paisley park and

:19:55.:19:58.

now the confirmation the sad news that Princess died at the age of 57.

:19:59.:20:04.

How would you describe his legacy? He will be remembered as someone who

:20:05.:20:08.

produced a huge range of music, mixing different styles. In the

:20:09.:20:13.

early part of his career he realised the importance of the media and

:20:14.:20:18.

publicity, famously changing his name to a symbol. People will

:20:19.:20:23.

remember the albums in the 80s and 90s. They sold millions of copies

:20:24.:20:28.

around the world. He continued producing music at a prodigious rate

:20:29.:20:33.

and a lot of it was recorded and never actually released. He had an

:20:34.:20:38.

incredible stage presence as people who saw him in the UK a couple of

:20:39.:20:42.

years ago will testify. And today the sad news he has died. He will be

:20:43.:20:47.

remembered as a great talent and also one of music's great

characters. Thanks very much. Volkswagen has agreed a deal
