Mikaeel Kular's community. That's | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline: Almost 100 jobs are lost | :00:00. | :00:28.
at Mivan construction, but elsewhere in County Antrim, Wrightbus winds a | :00:29. | :00:32.
major contract. The First Minister accuses Martin | :00:33. | :00:34.
McGuinness of talking nonsense, acting irrationally and playing mind | :00:35. | :00:40.
games. It is just crazy stuff. I think we really need to get some | :00:41. | :00:46.
sense into the situation. A pensioner is recovering in | :00:47. | :00:49.
hospital after he's shot in the chest by a masked man near | :00:50. | :00:51.
Ballycastle. The prospect of striking gold in the | :00:52. | :00:54.
Tyrone hills causes a deep rift in the local community. | :00:55. | :00:57.
Ulster make two changes for their European Cup showdown with | :00:58. | :01:01.
Leicester. And it may not be the best weekends. There is more cool | :01:02. | :01:11.
and wet weather on the way. Almost 100 workers at the Antrim | :01:12. | :01:14.
construction firm Mivan have been made redundant. That is about one | :01:15. | :01:22.
third of the workforce. The company, which won many business awards over | :01:23. | :01:25.
the past two decades, was put into administration last week. Our | :01:26. | :01:30.
economics and Business Editor is at Mivan's headquarters. Tell us more | :01:31. | :01:37.
about what happened there this morning. 98 members of staff today | :01:38. | :01:42.
were told they were losing their jobs. That is because some of the | :01:43. | :01:46.
contracts have been cancelled, which is what commonly happens in a | :01:47. | :01:50.
business goes into administration. Two thirds of workers still have | :01:51. | :01:54.
their jobs and will be back here and Monday morning at the administrator | :01:55. | :01:59.
tries to find a buyer for this business. -- business. Mivan has | :02:00. | :02:04.
been a successful company with contracts overseas. What went wrong? | :02:05. | :02:10.
It was a contract in Romania that was the undoing of his company. | :02:11. | :02:15.
There were two attacks, and between them, they lost to the company at up | :02:16. | :02:19.
to the company at up to ?2 million. -- two contracts. The company had to | :02:20. | :02:25.
eventually go into administration. I am told there are parts of the | :02:26. | :02:29.
business but are attractive to potential buyers and that error also | :02:30. | :02:37.
potential contracts in the future. Just up the road in Ballymena a | :02:38. | :02:40.
successful firm was celebrating again today. Wrightbus has won the | :02:41. | :02:47.
lion's share of a ?70 million contract for one of the UK's biggest | :02:48. | :02:51.
transport firms. Wrightbus is best known for making the so-called Boris | :02:52. | :02:58.
bus. This latest order involves a different type of innovation. The | :02:59. | :03:03.
bus looks like any other, but it uses what is called micro-hybrid | :03:04. | :03:08.
technology. Energy recovered from the braking system power things like | :03:09. | :03:12.
onboard electronics for stop eight cuts overall fuel consumption by | :03:13. | :03:18.
about -- electronics. It cuts several Phuc consumption by 10%. The | :03:19. | :03:29.
local MP says the order recognises the skill of the Ballymena | :03:30. | :03:35.
workforce. I am really delighted for the company, and it is another | :03:36. | :03:41.
success and another feather in the cab of Wrightbus. Wrightbus will | :03:42. | :03:45.
deliver the Eagles and the next few months, with all of them expected to | :03:46. | :03:52.
be in service by next year. -- the vehicle. The manufacturing sector as | :03:53. | :03:55.
a whole is smaller than it was before the recession, but it is | :03:56. | :03:59.
recovering. Official figures out next week should show the extent | :04:00. | :04:03.
about recovery. Per a taste of the kind of developments that might help | :04:04. | :04:09.
economic recovery, there is another Wrightbus project on the way in the | :04:10. | :04:14.
south of England. -- for a taste. Charging plates will be built into | :04:15. | :04:18.
the road, and indication of where this company is going next. What | :04:19. | :04:26.
we've seen today is a stark contrast between two parts of the economy. | :04:27. | :04:31.
Mivan in the construction sector was really hit by a hangover of debt | :04:32. | :04:35.
from the years of boom and bust. Meanwhile, Wrightbus an innovative | :04:36. | :04:38.
manufacturer, is well placed to benefit from any upswing in the | :04:39. | :04:45.
global economy. Peter Robinson has accused Martin | :04:46. | :04:48.
McGuinness of talking nonsense, acting irrationally and playing mind | :04:49. | :04:50.
games. The First Minister was reacting to Deputy First Minister's | :04:51. | :04:54.
remarks on the BBC last night. The two top ministers are showing | :04:55. | :04:57.
frustration with each other as the deadlock over the Haass proposals on | :04:58. | :05:00.
flags, parading and the past deepens. | :05:01. | :05:04.
There is some flash photography in this report. | :05:05. | :05:11.
Side-by-side in perfect harmony just days ago. Peter Robinson and Martin | :05:12. | :05:15.
McGuinness have no trouble smiling for the cameras at public events to | :05:16. | :05:21.
promote Ireland's historic records. Just do not mention the Haas talks. | :05:22. | :05:25.
Last night, the Deputy First Minister showed his frustration on a | :05:26. | :05:31.
BBC programme. I am fed up hearing that the public out there, who | :05:32. | :05:37.
deserve better, are disgusted with their politicians and feel we cannot | :05:38. | :05:41.
agree on anything. Martin McGuinness said the problem was with unionism. | :05:42. | :05:50.
The political excellence of unit -- are unionism. They agree with my | :05:51. | :05:54.
analysis that, in the city of Belfast, the groups are all the same | :05:55. | :06:02.
thing, and they have been hostile to the process in the course of recent | :06:03. | :06:07.
years. And a rational attack on unionism, according to the First | :06:08. | :06:14.
Minister. -- and a rational attack. Is Martin McGuinness telling me that | :06:15. | :06:19.
there are members of the UBS that are some weight associated with -- | :06:20. | :06:26.
that are in some way associated with that group and are taking | :06:27. | :06:31.
instructions from them? It is crazy stuff. He suggested that Martin | :06:32. | :06:34.
McGuinness might be feeling the political pressure. It is very | :06:35. | :06:42.
unethical for someone to take the pain out of the grenade in this | :06:43. | :06:49.
critical stage. A Belfast Orange man who was part of the Haas talks team | :06:50. | :06:54.
claims Martin McGuinness was talking nonsense. I think Martin McGuinness | :06:55. | :07:00.
has felt this way for quite some time now. Nomad or how he tries to | :07:01. | :07:05.
embellish it, it is still a lie. -- no matter. At this protest camp, all | :07:06. | :07:11.
shades of unionism have united ever a band parade and they take a | :07:12. | :07:19.
different view. You have figures from the Orange Order and DUP | :07:20. | :07:24.
politicians, all applauding the same speeches. What McGuinness is getting | :07:25. | :07:31.
at is not that they are all members of the same organisation, but they | :07:32. | :07:36.
have a common cause. What is the view from inside the camp? I am | :07:37. | :07:40.
disgusted by being called eight -- an extremist by Martin McGuinness, | :07:41. | :07:46.
with his party president background. That is ridiculous. The extremists | :07:47. | :07:50.
are across the road. This worker with his party's -- with his | :07:51. | :07:59.
party's background. So, plenty for the party leaders to | :08:00. | :08:05.
consider when they meet at Stormont next week. | :08:06. | :08:10.
The police are investigating the motive for a gun attack on a | :08:11. | :08:13.
74-year-old man near Ballycastle last night. The pensioner, who was | :08:14. | :08:22.
shot in the chest, is said to be in a stable condition in hospital. This | :08:23. | :08:25.
quiet area of five miles from Ballycastle became a crime scene | :08:26. | :08:30.
last night. The attack at this house last night took place shortly before | :08:31. | :08:35.
a quarter to nine. It is understood the victim was working in a shed | :08:36. | :08:39.
alongside this bungalow when he was shot in the chest. It is an attack | :08:40. | :08:43.
that has caused rate alarm in this community. The community are very | :08:44. | :08:49.
shocked for stop I have had several phone calls about it. Local people | :08:50. | :08:54.
the -- shop. I have had several phone calls about it. This is one of | :08:55. | :08:59.
the safest communities in Northern Ireland, said this has come as a | :09:00. | :09:04.
great shock. Following the shooting, the pensioner was taken to the | :09:05. | :09:08.
hospital, where he remains in a radical condition. Police are hoping | :09:09. | :09:15.
the -- are saying it is too early in the investigation to point to a | :09:16. | :09:21.
specific motive. Regardless of the reasons for this attack, people do | :09:22. | :09:24.
not have the rights to bring these matters into their own hands. The | :09:25. | :09:30.
attack is being treated as attempted murder. Police want anyone with | :09:31. | :09:39.
information to come forward. An inquest has found that, with | :09:40. | :09:42.
hindsight, there may have been possible opportunities in diagnosing | :09:43. | :09:45.
a rare blood disorder from which a woman and her unborn baby died. But | :09:46. | :09:48.
the coroner said he was unable to determine if the 36-year-old mother | :09:49. | :09:52.
and her son would have survived had there been an earlier diagnosis. | :09:53. | :10:03.
This woman was 26 weeks pregnant with her second child when she was | :10:04. | :10:09.
taken to the hospital on the 12th of June, 2011, with symptoms suggestive | :10:10. | :10:14.
of a stroke. She died shortly after arriving, and her baby was delivered | :10:15. | :10:20.
stillborn. A postmortem revealed that what she had been suffering | :10:21. | :10:26.
from was a very rare blood disorder known as TTP, which can be difficult | :10:27. | :10:31.
to diagnose. In his findings, the coroner highlighted a number of | :10:32. | :10:35.
different occasions the cheek concluded may be regarded as | :10:36. | :10:38.
possible opportunities to make that by guesses. -- that he concluded. | :10:39. | :10:49.
Cara made contact with medical profession and -- professionals six | :10:50. | :10:53.
times before her death. Her friend had called the doctor because she | :10:54. | :10:56.
was concerned that Cara's speech was slurred and hurt face was drooping. | :10:57. | :11:03.
A paramedic was called to take her to hospital. Cara was unwilling to | :11:04. | :11:07.
go to the hospital because of a long wait she had had in a different unit | :11:08. | :11:11.
earlier in the week. The local doctor tried to contact her twice by | :11:12. | :11:14.
phone without success, but did not make a home visit. The coroner | :11:15. | :11:20.
concluded that although Caro was mentally competent at this stage, | :11:21. | :11:24.
she was not in the position to assess the serious consequences for | :11:25. | :11:31.
herself and her unborn baby. In a statement, the Southeastern health | :11:32. | :11:35.
and social care trust said that Cara's tragic death has heightened | :11:36. | :11:39.
the awareness of this rare disease, which will make staff is better | :11:40. | :11:43.
prepared in the future. Cara's family that she would never | :11:44. | :11:46.
knowingly have put the life of her baby or her own life in danger. | :11:47. | :11:54.
A teenager who raid a 76-year-old woman can now be named after the BBC | :11:55. | :11:58.
went to court to challenge the terms under which his name was kept from | :11:59. | :12:03.
the public. Ryan McGreechan was just 15 when he raid the pensioner in | :12:04. | :12:06.
March 2011 after going into her home. She died later that year. His | :12:07. | :12:12.
identity was protected through his trial last year because of his age. | :12:13. | :12:19.
But following a appeal court hearing today the BBC can name him. | :12:20. | :12:29.
McGreechan is serving eight years. Three men from Liverpool have been | :12:30. | :12:33.
jailed for a total of 17 years for their involvement in a plot to rob a | :12:34. | :12:37.
multi-millionaire in Belfast. The plan was foiled by a lengthy | :12:38. | :12:39.
surveillance operation by the police. | :12:40. | :12:44.
These are the Merseyside robbers who plans to break into the home of one | :12:45. | :12:47.
of Northern Ireland's richest men on the outskirts of South L fast. | :12:48. | :12:52.
Michael Herbert Renz the largest Kentucky fried chicken franchise in | :12:53. | :13:02.
the area. The court was told how the gang arrived from Belfast on a | :13:03. | :13:07.
ferry. They went on several trips around the property of Mister | :13:08. | :13:15.
Herbert -- Mr Herbert before returning to Merseyside. They | :13:16. | :13:20.
entered the garden of his home carrying a rucksack and crowbars. | :13:21. | :13:23.
This time, the police swooped, and the three men were arrested. | :13:24. | :13:29.
52-year-old Michael Blondel and his accomplice were sentenced to three | :13:30. | :13:33.
years, and Craig Murray was sentenced to five years. Four Irish | :13:34. | :13:49.
language groups in Northern Ireland are to lose a substantial part of | :13:50. | :13:52.
their funding. Foras na Gaeilge which was set up under the Good | :13:53. | :13:56.
Friday Agreement, says it is cutting finance to groups throughout Ireland | :13:57. | :13:59.
and in future will give money to promote the language and provide | :14:00. | :14:10.
services on an all-island basis. Our main concern is the people that | :14:11. | :14:15.
will be made redundant. But with the work you're doing, particularly | :14:16. | :14:18.
cross community work, we do not think that will be done by the | :14:19. | :14:22.
All-Ireland association that is taking over. They don't understand | :14:23. | :14:25.
it, they don't understand the society you the way we do, they | :14:26. | :14:29.
don't have the experience we think this will be a disaster. | :14:30. | :14:39.
Still ahead on BBC Newsline this evening. Thomas Niblock looks head | :14:40. | :14:42.
to the Ulster rugby team's next European match it is one of the | :14:43. | :14:45.
biggest game in Ulster Rugby's history. Tonight I will have all the | :14:46. | :14:49.
build-up from Ulster and thereupon 's here at Leicester. -- their | :14:50. | :14:50.
opponents. A gold exploration company is | :14:51. | :15:02.
expected to be given formal permission next week to begin | :15:03. | :15:05.
prospecting for gold near Gortin in County Tyrone. But its plan to blast | :15:06. | :15:09.
a one mile-long excavation tunnel into the hills has caused a deep | :15:10. | :15:12.
rift in the local community. Kevin Magee reports. | :15:13. | :15:16.
This is what the Canadian gold expert thinks -- exploration company | :15:17. | :15:20.
Dalradian Resources is hoping to find in the hills of Tyrone, large | :15:21. | :15:28.
deposits of gold. Its plan is to extend an existing exploration shaft | :15:29. | :15:31.
by more than one mile into the countryside, but the arrival of the | :15:32. | :15:38.
49ers new Gortin has split the community. Some see it as a golden | :15:39. | :15:44.
opportunity. It will be very good for local appointment, there will be | :15:45. | :15:48.
at least 20 new jobs. This is an underground mine that | :15:49. | :15:52.
will minimise the landscape damage. It is crucial to strike a balance | :15:53. | :15:58.
between economic development, job creation and environmental | :15:59. | :15:59.
protection. Others fear the sheer scale of the operation will destroy | :16:00. | :16:04.
what has been designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. | :16:05. | :16:10.
The promise of jobs is very attractive, but gold mining is a | :16:11. | :16:15.
very dirty business. It doesn't come out as the gold as we know, it comes | :16:16. | :16:21.
out as rock, and there is a lot of rock. 45,000 tonnes, to be precise, | :16:22. | :16:26.
would be removed by blasting. One third will remain on site, the | :16:27. | :16:30.
rest will be removed. That will mean the equivalent of | :16:31. | :16:35.
1200 lorry-loads of rock this size taken away from our -- for analysis. | :16:36. | :16:41.
The company is forming a charity giving ?30,000 to local causes over | :16:42. | :16:46.
the past two years. But one man says they should be | :16:47. | :16:50.
spending money on an environmental impact report. To assess the risk | :16:51. | :16:56.
revolved with such a massive project should be demanded by the Department | :16:57. | :17:00.
and funded by the company. This would alleviate any concerns | :17:01. | :17:04.
for the community and for the environment. But the Department for | :17:05. | :17:08.
the environment says such an assessment is not necessary and | :17:09. | :17:12.
stringent conditions -- conditions will be attached. | :17:13. | :17:15.
No one from Dalradian Resources was currently available for an interview | :17:16. | :17:18.
but it maintains this scheme will not have any impact on the | :17:19. | :17:22.
environment. It is thought the company will be given the go-ahead | :17:23. | :17:25.
next week to start prospecting and if large enough deposits can be | :17:26. | :17:29.
found it hopes to establish one of the largest gold mines in Europe in | :17:30. | :17:41.

week Thomas Niblock made the journey to Welford Road, the home of | :20:29. | :20:31.
England's most successful rugby club. | :20:32. | :20:36.
Leicester Tigers! Rugby success in England is defined | :20:37. | :20:39.
by the Leicester Tigers, they are simply the best in the business. No | :20:40. | :20:46.
English side has won more European cups or collected more Premiership | :20:47. | :20:49.
titles. They are also current champions of England, in other words | :20:50. | :20:52.
Ulster are up against it and will need their travelling support in | :20:53. | :20:56.
full voice on Saturday. Judging by the past, that should not really be | :20:57. | :21:01.
a problem. Tell me about the occasional 's last | :21:02. | :21:05.
year. The official line was that you drunk as dry. | :21:06. | :21:08.
At the time it was our record of drinks sales. You did a great job | :21:09. | :21:12.
and it was very colourful and the bar afterwards. | :21:13. | :21:17.
The prize on offer to make a simple bash if Ulster win they will play | :21:18. | :21:22.
their European cup quarterfinal here at Ravenhill. If Leicester win they | :21:23. | :21:26.
will play at Welford Road and that game could, once again, be against | :21:27. | :21:31.
Ulster. We have managed to gain access to the way changing room this | :21:32. | :21:34.
weekend. Ulster will get ready here, on the | :21:35. | :21:38.
left hand side there is just one toilet. The changing room is pretty | :21:39. | :21:42.
basic to say the least, a couple of chairs and benches. We have for | :21:43. | :21:46.
showers, a physiotherapist bench, and a bath. Needless to say, no | :21:47. | :21:52.
advantage given to the visitors. Our biggest game of the year so far. | :21:53. | :21:56.
It is not a must win, but also date -- sides would definitely like to | :21:57. | :22:02.
win it. It is important if you have | :22:03. | :22:07.
aspirations to go on and win the competition. If Ulster ended up | :22:08. | :22:11.
winning the competition this year, would that surprise you? | :22:12. | :22:15.
No, because they are good enough, they have good enough players. | :22:16. | :22:19.
They are good enough to go anywhere and win, you saw that in Montpellier | :22:20. | :22:23.
where they controlled the game. You would imagine it will be very tight, | :22:24. | :22:27.
you imagine it will be a mistake from someone or a referee's decision | :22:28. | :22:33.
that may be the deciding factor. If Ulster plays to their potential this | :22:34. | :22:37.
weekend and so do all -- Leicester, who will win to Michael it will be | :22:38. | :22:42.
close want it? Leicester. I'm 100% confident we | :22:43. | :22:45.
will go through this weekend. It will be difficult but if we are | :22:46. | :22:49.
on top of our game I am sure we will win. The shadow of a World Cup | :22:50. | :22:53.
winning captain and a World Cup winning coach instils natural | :22:54. | :22:59.
confidence at Welford Road and they expect to win. | :23:00. | :23:01.
But expecting victory and achieving it can be two very different things. | :23:02. | :23:13.
I hope they have stopped the bar! -- stocked. Rory McIlroy is two | :23:14. | :23:17.
shots off the lead at the halfway point of the Abu Dhabi Championship | :23:18. | :23:19.
after recovering from a double-bogey for a five-under-par 67. | :23:20. | :23:23.
The Holywood man, who carded a 70 in his opening round finished the day | :23:24. | :23:25.
on seven under par for the tournament. He was five under for | :23:26. | :23:30.
his back nine thanks to shots like this. The old smile is back. | :23:31. | :23:33.
Kris Meeke remains in contention after eleven stages of the Monte | :23:34. | :23:36.
Carlo rally, the opening event of this year's World Championship. | :23:37. | :23:39.
Driving a Citroen, the Dungannon man is in third postion, one minute 37 | :23:40. | :23:41.
seconds off the lead with four stages to go tomorrrow. | :23:42. | :23:47.
It's semi final weekend in the Power NI McKenna Cup. Cavan face Monaghan | :23:48. | :23:55.
in the last four, while Tyrone take on Derry. Mickey Harte's side, who | :23:56. | :23:58.
face the same opposition in the opening round of the National League | :23:59. | :24:01.
in a fortnight's time, have been hugely impressive in the | :24:02. | :24:04.
competition, recording a 24 point victory over Armagh in their final | :24:05. | :24:08.
group game. We would have preferred not to meet | :24:09. | :24:11.
each other at this stage, but that is the way it is. We will have to do | :24:12. | :24:15.
what we can on Sunday and it will not have any bearing on what will | :24:16. | :24:19.
happen a couple of weeks later. We want as many games in the McKenna | :24:20. | :24:24.
Cup as possible. You are only guaranteed three to begin with, we | :24:25. | :24:26.
now have a fourth, but we would like a fifth. We like to play football. | :24:27. | :24:32.
It's tight at the top of the Irish Premiership, with Linfield's lead | :24:33. | :24:40.
cut to just one point. David Jeffrey's side travel to Ballymena | :24:41. | :24:42.
tomorrow - while second-placed Cliftonville face Portadown at | :24:43. | :24:43.
Solitude. All a tough game, you know, we have had | :24:44. | :24:51.
one point out of six against them this season. And that is after being | :24:52. | :24:57.
in the lead at 83 minutes in both games. We will find it tough against | :24:58. | :24:59.
them, but we could be a bit more clinical in front of goal and we | :25:00. | :25:05.
will be in on good ground. All the results on Final Score here | :25:06. | :25:08.
on BBC One tomorrow afternoon. That's the sport tonight. | :25:09. | :25:11.
The weather forecast next with Angie. | :25:12. | :25:15.
I would not go far without the waterproofs this weekend, not | :25:16. | :25:18.
looking too good at all if you are planning on doing anything | :25:19. | :25:21.
outdoors, a pretty unsettled outlook. We have rain, showers on | :25:22. | :25:27.
the cards. It will also feel pretty chilly and particularly through | :25:28. | :25:30.
tomorrow night we are looking at quite a bit of frost and some icy | :25:31. | :25:35.
patches, maybe some fog, as well. We had some fog in the West this | :25:36. | :25:41.
morning and low-lying fog at Letterkenny. That lifted this | :25:42. | :25:46.
morning. We know have broken cloud coming from the West. -- we now. | :25:47. | :25:52.
They will be some showers scattered this evening. At this stage you | :25:53. | :25:57.
could see temperatures dipping low enough to give a touch of ground | :25:58. | :26:01.
frost and maybe the odd icy patches. If anything, the temperatures will | :26:02. | :26:05.
creep up overnight because cloud will close in, ending up with misty, | :26:06. | :26:14.
murky conditions and hill fog. Those showers they are a sign of a change | :26:15. | :26:18.
tomorrow. Low pressure is sitting to the north, also a weather front | :26:19. | :26:22.
creeping up through the Irish Sea, bringing the prospect of some pretty | :26:23. | :26:26.
dull and wet weather for many parts of Northern Ireland. The rain will | :26:27. | :26:29.
move in fairly quickly tomorrow morning. The West, said only parts | :26:30. | :26:35.
of it, may avoid the worst of the rain, the heaviest pulses likely | :26:36. | :26:41.
further east. Once it is therefore Mid Ulster, County Down, through | :26:42. | :26:46.
Belfast and into Londonderry, the rain is on and off through the day. | :26:47. | :26:50.
Given the ground is saturated there is a slight risk of localised | :26:51. | :26:54.
flooding. The West is definitely best and brightest tomorrow, but | :26:55. | :26:58.
even here chilly day, temperatures not much above six Celsius. The rain | :26:59. | :27:04.
starting to clear away from the north-east tomorrow at -- tomorrow | :27:05. | :27:09.
night, left with pretty cold temperatures. Generally close to | :27:10. | :27:14.
freezing, a widespread frost, some icy patches and maybe some mist and | :27:15. | :27:19.
fog. A cold start on Sunday, which is generally right, but even then | :27:20. | :27:24.
there will be showers, some of them heavy. | :27:25. | :27:26.
Finally a reminder before we go of our main story - almost 100 workers | :27:27. | :27:32.
at the Antrim construction firm company -- Mivan have been made | :27:33. | :27:36.
redundant. On our news online page we have an | :27:37. | :27:45.
interview with Westlife singer Shane | :27:46. | :27:46. |
