That's all from us. Don't forget a first look at the papers over on the | :00:00. | :00:00.
BBC A former IRA leader has been charged | :00:00. | :00:10.
in connection with the abduction and murder of Jean McConville in 1972. | :00:11. | :00:16.
She was one of the so-called Disappeared, a group of 16 people | :00:17. | :00:19.
who were shot and secretly buried by the IRA. | :00:20. | :00:30.
In the 70s, Ivory Bell was a senior leader in the provisional IRA, who | :00:31. | :00:33.
along with Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, was part of a delegation | :00:34. | :00:37.
that had secret talks with the British government. He was arrested | :00:38. | :00:42.
at his home on Tuesday in connection with the disappearance of Jean | :00:43. | :00:45.
McConville. She was kidnapped in front of her ten children, accused | :00:46. | :00:50.
of having been an informer. That Kim was later dismissed following an | :00:51. | :00:53.
official investigation. Despite numerous digs on a desolate beaches | :00:54. | :00:57.
in the Irish Republic, her body was not found until 2003 when a man | :00:58. | :01:03.
walking his dog stumbled upon her remains. I've Bell is expected to | :01:04. | :01:08.
appear in court in the morning. The man who died after the boat he | :01:09. | :01:12.
was in sank in Lough Ree in County Westmeath has been named locally as | :01:13. | :01:16.
David Warnock from Armagh. Mr Warnock who was in his 20s was on a | :01:17. | :01:20.
fishing trip with two friends when the accident happened. One of them | :01:21. | :01:25.
is still missing and the other is critically ill in hospital. | :01:26. | :01:35.
The men had planned a camping and fishing expedition on Lough Ree, | :01:36. | :01:40.
their boat full of equipment. When weather conditions did, a local man | :01:41. | :01:45.
was quick to the alarm. You could see that the lads had a passion for | :01:46. | :01:50.
what they were doing, that was very thing, their sport and they loved | :01:51. | :02:00.
it. The last thing I said to the lads was, be safe and enjoy | :02:01. | :02:11.
yourselves. The lifeboat found two men in the water and brought them | :02:12. | :02:14.
ashore. Searchers have been continuing for the third man and the | :02:15. | :02:20.
boat. Where the search is going on, it is about three miles from side to | :02:21. | :02:27.
side. It was a big area of water and it is quite deep. Strong winds can | :02:28. | :02:38.
make choppy waves very quickly. I think that is maybe what could them | :02:39. | :02:47.
by surprise. Searchers have been taking place along the shore and on | :02:48. | :02:52.
the surface of the water and divers have been looking beneath the water. | :02:53. | :02:56.
Local fishermen have also joined in the search. The group of lads that | :02:57. | :03:04.
were fishing where from a club and like ourselves, but liked the water. | :03:05. | :03:11.
Now it is an anxious wait for news. I have spoken briefly to some people | :03:12. | :03:17.
here and it is very raw and emotional. There was not a lot said | :03:18. | :03:24.
but we will see how we go later on. Two parents have pleaded guilty to a | :03:25. | :03:27.
litany of sexual abuse and other offences against their children over | :03:28. | :03:31.
three decades. Two of the children's uncles and two other men pleaded | :03:32. | :03:35.
guilty to similar charges. There are some details in this report which | :03:36. | :03:44.
you may find upsetting. A court has heard today how for | :03:45. | :03:49.
children suffered horrific sexual abuse, neglect and cruelty by their | :03:50. | :03:53.
parents and two uncles as well as two other men. Belfast Crown Court | :03:54. | :03:59.
also heard that the abuse took place between the late 70s and early 1990s | :04:00. | :04:05.
in the children's home before they were taken into care. The | :04:06. | :04:08.
prosecution barrister said the children's mother had sex with | :04:09. | :04:12.
various men on different occasions, sometimes even with her two | :04:13. | :04:14.
brothers. He said the mother described an early hearing as a | :04:15. | :04:20.
prostitute was often drunk and made the four young children watch her | :04:21. | :04:26.
having sex. He added one girl was left so badly neglected that she was | :04:27. | :04:32.
still in a cot at the age of two and could barely walk or talk. One child | :04:33. | :04:38.
was a bed-wetter and he was made to sleep in a soiled mattress. A social | :04:39. | :04:44.
worker postbag report described the house as squalid. It said the | :04:45. | :04:49.
children were often left starving. All six of the accused who have all | :04:50. | :04:52.
pleaded guilty to the charges eventually appeared in the dock | :04:53. | :04:56.
today. One of the uncles had to be arrested and brought to court. The | :04:57. | :05:02.
father and mother, both have pleaded guilty to 17 charges of cruelty and | :05:03. | :05:07.
neglect. The mother, to six counts of gross indecency and the father to | :05:08. | :05:11.
a charge of assault. Sentencing will take place later this month. | :05:12. | :05:16.
The outgoing Deputy Chief Constable Judith Gillespie told the Alliance | :05:17. | :05:19.
Party conference tonight that Democrats should hold true to a | :05:20. | :05:22.
strategic vision for the future of Northern Ireland. She leaves her | :05:23. | :05:31.
post next week. We have the continuing challenges | :05:32. | :05:36.
around policing public disorder, parades and our troubled past. These | :05:37. | :05:41.
could also to throw us of the vision and throw us off course for the | :05:42. | :05:45.
longer term. We must not let them. As I reflect on my 32 years policing | :05:46. | :05:49.
Northern Ireland, I have learned that we are all in this for the | :05:50. | :05:53.
longer game. There was a fond farewell today to | :05:54. | :05:56.
Jimmy Ellis, the veteran actor remembered for his many roles on | :05:57. | :05:59.
stage and screen. His family and fellow actors gathered in Belfast | :06:00. | :06:01.
for the 82-year-old's funeral service. | :06:02. | :06:10.
Born and bred in the shadow of the shipyard, Jimmy Ellis never forgot | :06:11. | :06:14.
where he came from. Nor have the public that he touched through | :06:15. | :06:22.
stage, screen and drama. None more so than as the cop in Z Cars. More | :06:23. | :06:29.
than a future years were brushed away but mostly it was easy, | :06:30. | :06:33.
laughter and applause which ran out from the Church in East Belfast as | :06:34. | :06:39.
family, friends and fellow actors celebrated the life and work of | :06:40. | :06:44.
Jimmy Ellis. He was a great friend and amend or, not just for me, but | :06:45. | :06:50.
for many people. Most of us will remember him and his fun. There have | :06:51. | :06:57.
been many tributes. Kenneth Branagh said he was a highly intelligent and | :06:58. | :07:09.
funny man and a tremendous actor. Just overwhelming to see the people | :07:10. | :07:21.
here. He would be overwhelmed that this many people came today. That | :07:22. | :07:30.
was the experience of so many of us today of Jimmy Ellis, a man, fully | :07:31. | :07:37.
alive. This afternoon, a final episode as a Jimmy Ellis's cortege | :07:38. | :07:40.
revisited some of the special places in his life. The former family home | :07:41. | :07:46.
on Park Avenue and the school he attended as a boy. An opportunity to | :07:47. | :07:51.
four Belfast to say farewell and thank you to one of its favourite | :07:52. | :07:56.
sons. Rugby, three penalties from Paddy | :07:57. | :07:58.
Jackson earned Ulster a 9-3 victory over Edinburgh in tonight's Pro12 | :07:59. | :08:03.
league game at Murrayfield. The win sees Ulster stay in touch with | :08:04. | :08:07.
league leaders Leinster as they move up to second in the table, five | :08:08. | :08:13.
points behind their rivals. The weather is next. | :08:14. | :08:24.
Has been some snow in places today and there will be more of a | :08:25. | :08:27.
suggestion of winter this coming weekend. Still some wintry showers | :08:28. | :08:33.
around tonight. A cold night to come with Frost in the countryside and | :08:34. | :08:37.
ice on many untreated roads and pavements. The Met office had issued | :08:38. | :08:45.
a warning for icy surfaces. A cold weekend, particularly in the wind. | :08:46. | :08:50.
Some sunshine around on Sunday but also some wintry showers tomorrow. A | :08:51. | :08:58.
cold start tomorrow with ice in places but also quite sunny for a | :08:59. | :09:01.
time but showers will move him from the West and they will fall as a mix | :09:02. | :09:07.
of rain, hail, sleet and snow. The snow should not settle anywhere but | :09:08. | :09:13.
there will be a cold wind blowing through the temperatures you see | :09:14. | :09:17.
here of around eight degrees, that is where the sun is shining. When | :09:18. | :09:21.
the snow comes, it will of course feel much much colder. In the middle | :09:22. | :09:26.
of the afternoon tomorrow, there will be some sunshine around. Some | :09:27. | :09:34.
of the showers will feel wintry. In the sunshine, we could see | :09:35. | :09:38.
temperatures of eight or nine degrees. Sunday is the better of the | :09:39. | :09:42.
two days this weekend. Still that cold wind, especially in the north | :09:43. | :09:46.
and east. Sunday night, we are expecting a sharp frost. Less cold | :09:47. | :09:53.
for the beginning of next week. That's it for now. You can keep | :09:54. | :09:56.
up-to-date with News Online and follow this programme on Facebook | :09:57. | :10:00.
and Twitter. From BBC Newsline, good night and have a great weekend. | :10:01. | :10:03. |
