Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline: | :00:00. | :00:16.
Beaten and terrified - we hear from the men who say racist hate attacks | :00:17. | :00:20.
I still remember the face of that fellow, the Hague on his face, the | :00:21. | :00:34.
rage was coming out from his face and I do not know why. | :00:35. | :00:37.
A court hears a woman's claims of sexual abuse | :00:38. | :00:40.
I'm live at Belfast City Hall with the latest on the new Lord Mayor. | :00:41. | :00:45.
And as the new season gets under way, can we look forward to some | :00:46. | :00:49.
summer weather this week? Find out shortly. | :00:50. | :00:57.
Two men injured in a racist attack at their home in | :00:58. | :01:00.
north Belfast yesterday say they are going to leave Northern Ireland. | :01:01. | :01:03.
One of the men, who are originally from Pakistan, was treated | :01:04. | :01:06.
in hospital after being attacked at a house in Parkmount Street. | :01:07. | :01:09.
Hours earlier a bottle had been thrown through | :01:10. | :01:11.
Kelly Bonner's report contains some strong language. | :01:12. | :01:22.
Back home after a terrifying ordeal, yesterday afternoon a man approached | :01:23. | :01:28.
Muhammad Asif Khattak outside his home, screaming racial abuse before | :01:29. | :01:33.
assaulting him. He managed to get into the house but two men kicked | :01:34. | :01:37.
the door down and followed him inside. I managed to hide myself in | :01:38. | :01:45.
the toilet and I closed the door. He pushed the door and I was so scared | :01:46. | :01:51.
at the time and then he started beating me. He started punching me | :01:52. | :01:57.
and kicking me. He beat me everywhere, with a bottle in his | :01:58. | :02:06.
hand, he was beating me on my head. His friend was also attacked as he | :02:07. | :02:11.
tried to defend him. I still remember the face of that fellow, | :02:12. | :02:15.
the rage was coming out of his face and I do not know why. What was he | :02:16. | :02:23.
saying to you? Racially abusing us, saying dirty Arabs, get out of our | :02:24. | :02:29.
street, we do not want you here. This was the second attack on the | :02:30. | :02:34.
men in 12 hours. Earlier yesterday morning a bottle was thrown through | :02:35. | :02:38.
the window of their house. There was controversy over comments made about | :02:39. | :02:42.
Islam by Pastor James McConnell and the First Minister. Muhammad Asif | :02:43. | :02:46.
Khattak called on Peter Robinson to help the future situation. That is a | :02:47. | :02:53.
fire he let in the jungle and I am one of the victims of that fire ash | :02:54. | :03:01.
Mike defused the situation. If the First Minister came flawed and he | :03:02. | :03:05.
apologised on public, on air to the Muslim community, people would be | :03:06. | :03:10.
really happy. The MP for the area come down to the attack. Having | :03:11. | :03:16.
called with the two gentlemen, I am appalled at what happened to them. | :03:17. | :03:21.
This should never have happened and I share the outrage many of the | :03:22. | :03:25.
people living in this area feel. The rest of us are not racists, indeed | :03:26. | :03:30.
there are people living in that street of other ethnic minorities | :03:31. | :03:33.
and they feel outraged at being branded in this way. A 57-year-old | :03:34. | :03:39.
man was remanded and has been released on bail. An 18-year-old | :03:40. | :03:45.
woman has been charged with disorderly behaviour and will appear | :03:46. | :03:49.
in court. Earlier today, Pastor James McConnell arrived at the house | :03:50. | :03:54.
to offer the two men his support. He said he was ashamed and angry at the | :03:55. | :03:59.
attack, urging the two men to stay here in Northern Ireland. But in the | :04:00. | :04:04.
last hour, the two men have moved out of the house and look set to | :04:05. | :04:06.
leave Northern Ireland. The number of hate crimes reported | :04:07. | :04:09.
to the police has increased But figures show there are | :04:10. | :04:11.
very few prosecutions under And as BBC Newsline's Tara Mills | :04:12. | :04:16.
reports, that's in stark contrast to We must all stand up against six | :04:17. | :04:32.
Arianism and racism. -- sectarianism. | :04:33. | :04:35.
Saturday's rally was prompted by a number of recent racially | :04:36. | :04:37.
And there was another gathering in response to the controversial | :04:38. | :04:41.
remarks made by Pastor James McConnell, and those made by | :04:42. | :04:43.
The recent focus on Islam has done damage to our | :04:44. | :04:53.
But local Muslims say events like the rally have helped. | :04:54. | :04:57.
That's a good signal to show people from different minorities that | :04:58. | :05:04.
Northern Ireland and Belfast are open for all races, all religions | :05:05. | :05:07.
and colours and everyone will come here, and that was brilliant | :05:08. | :05:13.
support. But what is the picture when it comes to racism here, and | :05:14. | :05:17.
what is the justice system doing to tackle it? | :05:18. | :05:21.
According to the latest police statistics, | :05:22. | :05:23.
there's been a sharp year-on-year increase in the number of racist | :05:24. | :05:26.
In the 12 months from 2012 to 2013, 750 racist incidents were reported | :05:27. | :05:31.
That number went up to 982 last year. | :05:32. | :05:33.
That's a rise of over 30% in just a 12-month period. | :05:34. | :05:36.
And the figures also show that the police only solve one | :05:37. | :05:39.
Neil Jarman has carried out extensive research into hate crime. | :05:40. | :05:45.
He says the fact we lag behind the rest of the UK sends out | :05:46. | :05:49.
He feels there is less emphasis on pursuing the perpetrators. It sends | :05:50. | :06:01.
a message that these incidents are not being taken that seriously, so | :06:02. | :06:06.
even when people say they are tackling racism, if they see cases | :06:07. | :06:11.
are not being successfully rusticated, it tends to undermine | :06:12. | :06:15.
that message and victims say, why should we report if they do not do | :06:16. | :06:21.
anything about it? Others say hot additions are guilty of ambivalence | :06:22. | :06:25.
towards racism, which is not the place that like the case in other | :06:26. | :06:29.
parts of the UK. The legislation needs to be fit for purpose so we | :06:30. | :06:34.
can name hate crime for what it is and deal with it. No one from the | :06:35. | :06:39.
prosecution service was available for interview but a spokesman said | :06:40. | :06:44.
it is not appropriate for the PPS to comment on legislation as this rests | :06:45. | :06:47.
with the Department of Justice. A woman in her late 70s has died | :06:48. | :06:49.
after a house fire in Larne. The blaze started | :06:50. | :06:53.
in an upstairs bedroom of her home Firefighters rescued the woman | :06:54. | :06:56.
from the building, It's thought | :06:57. | :06:59.
the fire was started accidentally. An 18-year-old man has appeared | :07:00. | :07:05.
in court charged with attempting to murder a teenager | :07:06. | :07:08.
in Lisburn two years ago. Scott Vineer, who has autism, | :07:09. | :07:13.
was 17 years old when he was found unconscious on the Lagan towpath. | :07:14. | :07:16.
His head had been beaten. He remained in a coma | :07:17. | :07:19.
for three months. Today, he was in court alongside | :07:20. | :07:21.
his parents to see Ryan Craig from Ashmount Gardens in Lisburn charged | :07:22. | :07:24.
with attempting to murder him. The accused was remanded in custody | :07:25. | :07:28.
until the end of the month. Health care regulators have found | :07:29. | :07:35.
a County Antrim nursing home owner failed to report allegations | :07:36. | :07:38.
of potential abuse The RQIA found Dr Dean Harron, who | :07:39. | :07:40.
owns Cherry Tree in Carrickfergus, guilty of not complying with | :07:41. | :07:48.
safeguarding legislation. The home was the subject | :07:49. | :07:51.
of a special investigation Our health correspondent | :07:52. | :07:54.
Marie-Louise Connolly has the story. What is the nature | :07:55. | :07:58.
of the allegations? They involve one care assistant who | :07:59. | :08:08.
allegedly verbally abused to residents. The residence are | :08:09. | :08:13.
described as being vulnerable and elderly. One was being served their | :08:14. | :08:17.
evening meal and the other, we are told, was spoken to in a shower | :08:18. | :08:23.
manner. These incidents only emerged after the regulator inspected | :08:24. | :08:28.
allegations of abuse between workers. We are told it emerged | :08:29. | :08:34.
these other incidents had taken place between residents. We | :08:35. | :08:38.
understand the home's manager did carry out her own inspection but she | :08:39. | :08:43.
didn't report it through official channels, which isn't in line with | :08:44. | :08:45.
legislation. You investigated this nursing home | :08:46. | :08:48.
last year after being contacted Is this evidence that | :08:49. | :08:51.
things haven't improved? Some might argue these incidents | :08:52. | :09:00.
highlight that there is still an ongoing problem. Others might say | :09:01. | :09:05.
the regulators are on top of the job, keeping an eye on things, but | :09:06. | :09:10.
as we recall, the whistle-blower came to the BBC with her story about | :09:11. | :09:15.
the home and said her concerns had fallen on deaf ears about toilet, | :09:16. | :09:21.
cleanliness, staff not being properly trained. However, since she | :09:22. | :09:28.
came forward, there has been an independent investigation into the | :09:29. | :09:31.
home and we expect that to be published next month. Doctor Dean | :09:32. | :09:40.
Haran has been named as feeling in his statutory duty and a home has | :09:41. | :09:46.
been put on alert, which means it has until July to address those | :09:47. | :09:48.
problems. They said the staff are deeply | :09:49. | :09:58.
disappointed by what has happened, what has been reported, and patients | :09:59. | :10:04.
can expect the very best of staff, who take very seriously their | :10:05. | :10:05.
duties. Still ahead on the programme | :10:06. | :10:08.
before 7pm: 20 years on, | :10:09. | :10:10.
yet the families of those killed in the Chinook disaster say they | :10:11. | :10:13.
still don't know how it happened. The folk musician Francis McPeake | :10:14. | :10:20.
has gone on trial in Belfast accused The 72-year-old, | :10:21. | :10:24.
formerly of Eliza Street Close in Belfast, was aged around 67 at | :10:25. | :10:30.
the time of the alleged offences. His alleged victim has | :10:31. | :10:34.
been giving evidence. The musician sat quietly | :10:35. | :10:38.
in the dock as the details of 12 charges of underage sexual | :10:39. | :10:43.
relations were put to him. A prosecution lawyer told | :10:44. | :10:47.
the court that when interviewed by the police, Mr McPeake denied | :10:48. | :10:49.
everything, saying the allegations He made the denial | :10:50. | :10:53.
in a written statement. But when asked questions | :10:54. | :10:58.
about details to do with the alleged offences, | :10:59. | :11:00.
the prosecution said he replied, It was alleged that he first met | :11:01. | :11:03.
the schoolgirl in Belfast in 2008, and that the relationship | :11:04. | :11:11.
between the two became more The alleged victim, | :11:12. | :11:13.
who can't be identified, told the court she started having full | :11:14. | :11:21.
sexual relations with the musician when they returned to Belfast from | :11:22. | :11:26.
a music festival in the Republic. She said after | :11:27. | :11:30.
the first time it happened that Mr McPeake told her he was afraid and | :11:31. | :11:32.
that he had a lot to lose and that The woman, | :11:33. | :11:37.
who was under the age of 16 at the time of the first offences, said | :11:38. | :11:42.
she broke off the relationship. She told the court that | :11:43. | :11:46.
when she did, he said she'd wrecked his life because he had fallen | :11:47. | :11:50.
in love with her. Her cross-examination is due to | :11:51. | :12:01.
resume tomorrow morning. The DUP has praised | :12:02. | :12:05.
the outgoing Lord Mayor of Belfast, Mairtin O Muilleoir of Sinn Fein, | :12:06. | :12:08.
saying he has been In the past half-hour, the council | :12:09. | :12:10.
has been electing his successor. Our political correspondent | :12:11. | :12:15.
Martina Purdy is at the City Hall. There has been plenty of cheering | :12:16. | :12:29.
coming from the council chamber at this evening. The SDLP's Nicola | :12:30. | :12:36.
Mallon has made history because she is not only the last Lord Mayor of | :12:37. | :12:40.
the City Council as currently constituted, there will be a new | :12:41. | :12:45.
super council next year, but she is the first nationalist woman to hold | :12:46. | :12:50.
the post. She is only the third female Lord Mayor in Belfast's | :12:51. | :12:56.
disarray. Mark Simpson has this report on Mairtin O Muilleoir's year | :12:57. | :13:02.
in office. He never missed a photo opportunity. And with his telephone | :13:03. | :13:08.
in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, the Sinn Fein Lord Mayor | :13:09. | :13:12.
tried to speak to people from every corner of Belfast. It only backfired | :13:13. | :13:18.
once, when he went to Woodvale Parade, near the Shankill Road. He | :13:19. | :13:23.
was hurt by the experience but it didn't stop him trying to reach out | :13:24. | :13:27.
across the divide. A highlight of the year for me was that the | :13:28. | :13:33.
Shankill Woodvale Methodist congregation came into the parlour | :13:34. | :13:38.
with their study group. I said I would come in to say hello and when | :13:39. | :13:42.
I did they were praying for the Lord Mayor, and that was a special | :13:43. | :13:47.
emotional moment for me. He went pink for the Giro d'Italia and | :13:48. | :13:54.
brought some humour to City Hall. A far cry from 1987 when he first | :13:55. | :13:59.
joined the council. When I first came in I wore a flak jacket, I | :14:00. | :14:02.
wasn't allowed to speak, I was thrown after -- out of my first | :14:03. | :14:08.
meeting after ten minutes. I said let's not do the past too much, | :14:09. | :14:13.
because for every hurt and peace of devoted I could talk about, someone | :14:14. | :14:18.
else could talk about the heartbreak and grief that existed for them | :14:19. | :14:22.
during the years of darkness in this city. At one of his last engagements | :14:23. | :14:27.
he received a standing ovation and joining in the applause was the DUP. | :14:28. | :14:34.
On balance I think a more positive contribution than negative. He has | :14:35. | :14:39.
been a good Lord Mayor, not necessarily a Sinn Fein Lord Mayor, | :14:40. | :14:44.
and that may be why he has established a good reputation. The | :14:45. | :14:47.
next Lord Mayor will do things slightly differently. I am not into | :14:48. | :14:56.
selfie 's. That's not me. A bit more subdued but hopefully will bring the | :14:57. | :15:01.
same level of energy. Even his opponents say he will be a hard act | :15:02. | :15:13.
to follow. What can you tell us about the new Lady Mayoress? She is | :15:14. | :15:17.
young woman in her early 30s, a newlywed, and she hails from Ardoyne | :15:18. | :15:23.
although she no longer lives within the city limits. She lives North of | :15:24. | :15:30.
the city and says she hopes to come back to visit it soon. She is giving | :15:31. | :15:36.
up her post of special and to the environment Minister to focus on | :15:37. | :15:40.
this role. She wants to focus on a shared city, an unsung heroes, and | :15:41. | :15:44.
on the homeless. She is absolutely thrilled that the top posts in this | :15:45. | :15:48.
city are being held by women this year, such as deputy mayor, high | :15:49. | :15:56.
Sheriff and the chief Executive of the council. So plenty to celebrate | :15:57. | :16:01.
in the city tonight. 20 years ago, at this time | :16:02. | :16:05.
of the evening, a military helicopter travelling from | :16:06. | :16:08.
RAF Aldergrove to Scotland crashed Relatives of some of those who died | :16:09. | :16:10.
say they still do not accept the Ministry of Defence's version of the | :16:11. | :16:17.
incident and fear they may never Our investigations reporter | :16:18. | :16:21.
Kevin Magee has this story. This memorial has been erected | :16:22. | :16:29.
on the crash site on a remote It lists the names of the 25 senior | :16:30. | :16:32.
security personnel from the Royal Ulster Constabulary, Army | :16:33. | :16:38.
and MI5 who died alongside the four For one widow, Susan Phoenix, | :16:39. | :16:41.
who lost her husband Ian, 20 years on that it is still there. | :16:42. | :17:05.
If you have no great love, you always know it. I am not bitter, I | :17:06. | :17:12.
am not angry. I know I always have that love with me. | :17:13. | :17:22.
At first, the two pilots were blamed, but following a campaign, | :17:23. | :17:25.
The MoD now says after exhaustive investigations by it and independent | :17:26. | :17:29.
bodies, there was no evidence of technical or mechanical failure. | :17:30. | :17:32.
I think we always knew it was a faulty piece of kit. We may never | :17:33. | :17:52.
know. Flight data and cockpit voice recorders or not fitted to all | :17:53. | :17:56.
Chinook helicopters at the time, so there was a lack of evidence. | :17:57. | :18:01.
Anne Magee's husband Kevin was a detective inspector in the | :18:02. | :18:04.
She says she' never been given a proper explanation | :18:05. | :18:07.
It's infuriating not to know. I have lost the most important person in my | :18:08. | :18:19.
life and I don't know why. Multiply that by 29 and that is where we | :18:20. | :18:24.
are, but I suppose you cannot just keep going back and back and back. | :18:25. | :18:27.
A number of memorial services were held, including one on the Mull | :18:28. | :18:30.
We are very aware that there have been investigations since and it has | :18:31. | :18:42.
been a controversial subject at times. People 20 years on one to | :18:43. | :18:47.
look back on that and just end about those people who lost their lives. | :18:48. | :18:52.
This hillside was covered in cloud on the night of the disaster. 20 | :18:53. | :18:56.
years on and a host of inquiry is and for some of the residents | :18:57. | :19:01.
affected, the mist has never cleared, with questions still being | :19:02. | :19:04.
asked over what precisely caused the crash, leading the RAF to describe | :19:05. | :19:08.
this as their worst peacetime disaster. | :19:09. | :19:12.
Racing at the Isle of Man TT motorcycle festival has been | :19:13. | :19:15.
overshadowed by the death of a competitor. | :19:16. | :19:17.
Stephen Watson is here with the latest details of that. | :19:18. | :19:26.
Yes, sadly a rider has been killed today. Bob Price, an experienced | :19:27. | :19:34.
veteran from Gloucestershire in England, died following an incident | :19:35. | :19:38.
on the third lap of the race. The circuit is regarded as the most | :19:39. | :19:50.
dangerous in the world. The news came after a weekend when the sport | :19:51. | :19:50.
paid its tribute to the late Simon Andrews, | :19:51. | :19:57.
who died after a fatal crash Thousands of bikers took part in a | :19:58. | :20:00.
special parade on the Isle of Man. Roy Keane is staying | :20:01. | :20:05.
as assistant boss of the Republic of Keane informed | :20:06. | :20:08.
the FAI that he does NOT wish to be considered for the manager's post | :20:09. | :20:13.
vacated by Neil Lennon. Last week some bookmakers suspended | :20:14. | :20:15.
betting once it was revealed there had been | :20:16. | :20:18.
an informal approach to Keane. The FAI confirmed that Keane will | :20:19. | :20:20.
travel with Ireland Former West Brom boss Steve Clarke | :20:21. | :20:23.

of England's group D opponents in Brazil, beat Northern Ireland | :20:41. | :20:43.
1-0 in a friendly on Saturday. But O'Neill took heart from his | :20:44. | :20:46.
team's defensive display and said Antrim's Gaelic footballers | :20:47. | :21:00.
will play Donegal in Liam Bradley's side edged a | :21:01. | :21:02.
thrilling contest against Fermanagh respects defensive systems have | :21:03. | :21:17.

Defensive systems have typically dominated Championship games | :21:22. | :21:23.
in recent years, but this match certainly bucked that | :21:24. | :21:25.
Antrim raced into an early lead - this goal | :21:26. | :21:29.
from Brian Neeson put Liam Bradley's side a remakable 11 points ahead. | :21:30. | :21:32.
But that seemed to kick-start a Fermanagh revival, | :21:33. | :21:34.
as the home side started to make an impact on the scoreboard, | :21:35. | :21:37.
with forward Sean Quigley finding the net before half time. | :21:38. | :21:40.
In the second period, Antrim began to dominate once more. | :21:41. | :21:43.
The hugely impressive Kevin Niblock struck their second goal of the game | :21:44. | :21:48.
before adding this outstanding point from play shortly after to further | :21:49. | :21:54.
Former All Star Barry Owens' strike gave them hope of a comeback, | :21:55. | :22:06.
and Marty O'Brien's late score left just two points between | :22:07. | :22:09.
Antrim hung on though for victory, altough it took this brilliant goal | :22:10. | :22:17.
line clearance from Kevin O' Boyle in the dying seconds to seal | :22:18. | :22:20.
We enjoyed the night and we will knuckle down for the next day. We | :22:21. | :22:40.
certainly do not fear anybody. It was a fascinating game in many ways. | :22:41. | :22:45.
Highly exciting. A lot of good scores by both teams. A lot of | :22:46. | :22:49.
mistakes by both teams, but at the end of it all, I would not doubt | :22:50. | :22:53.
that on the day, the better team probably got that result. | :22:54. | :22:58.
Victory for Antrim's footballers, but the county hurlers were knocked | :22:59. | :23:01.
Two goals in the first four minutes proved to be the springboard | :23:02. | :23:05.
The Coleraine rowers Peter and Richard Chambers have won silver | :23:06. | :23:13.

The brothers, silver medallists at the London Olympics two years | :23:16. | :23:17.

They held off a strong challenge from France to come home in second | :23:21. | :23:24.

We went over there with the intention of trying to beat them | :23:32. | :23:36.
that they are the current European and world champions. We have got our | :23:37. | :23:41.
work to do between now and Amsterdam. It is our first four | :23:42. | :23:53.
Greeks there. We have gone a long way. We will take that and the will | :23:54. | :24:04.
go out to win it. Well done to them, and there was plenty more happening | :24:05. | :24:05.
over the weekend. After a season of farewells, | :24:06. | :24:10.
Brian O'Driscoll's swan song lasted less than nine minutes in the | :24:11. | :24:13.
Pro12 Final in Dublin. Ireland's most capped player was | :24:14. | :24:16.
forced from the field with injury. Leinster went on to score 4-0 | :24:17. | :24:19.

his first Grand Tour win. All over for the comeback tour, and | :24:59. | :25:11.
nobody sadder than are Donna. We wish him all the best. The | :25:12. | :25:14.
weather forecast is next. As we ended spring yesterday, it was | :25:15. | :25:34.
the third coldest spring since 1910. Cloud around today and a few showers | :25:35. | :25:40.
as well. It will continue to come and go but with a lot of cloud | :25:41. | :25:43.
around tonight, averages will fall no lower than ten or 11 degrees. | :25:44. | :25:47.
Into tomorrow morning, a lot of cloud around but it will brighten | :25:48. | :25:50.
through the day and there will be spells of sunshine as well, along | :25:51. | :25:55.
with sunshine and scattered showers. Tomorrow, scattered showers mainly | :25:56. | :25:59.
in western areas but they will drift East through the morning and into | :26:00. | :26:05.
the afternoon. Some of the showers will be heavier as well with the odd | :26:06. | :26:10.
rumble of thunder. But this will come out. Some areas may not get | :26:11. | :26:18.
such high temperatures, so below average for the time of year. We | :26:19. | :26:25.
should be at 16 or 17 degrees. For the second part of the afternoon | :26:26. | :26:29.
tomorrow, continuing the sunny spells and showers. Some of the | :26:30. | :26:33.
showers will be happy. A bit of a cooler night. Temperatures in single | :26:34. | :26:37.
figures especially in the countryside. But under cloud cover, | :26:38. | :26:42.
staying in double figures. Wednesday, getting off to a | :26:43. | :26:46.
promising start. Fine and dry weather to begin with but into the | :26:47. | :26:49.

especially to the North coast. Staying below average for the time | :26:56. | :26:59.
of year. If you do have anything planned for the outdoors this week, | :27:00. | :27:03.
Thursday will be the best day. The driest and brightest. But things can | :27:04. | :27:08.
change it slightly between now and then. Stay tuned. You can also | :27:09. | :27:14.
