from Brazil. That's all | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Good evening. The headlines on BBC Newsline: | :00:00. | :00:16.
All five Garth Brooks concerts are cancelled - | :00:17. | :00:20.
Two people are in court for the murder of a vulnerable man | :00:21. | :00:25.
Calls for the former Kincora Boys' Home to be included | :00:26. | :00:37.
Executive ministers issue a terse two-line statement calling for all | :00:38. | :00:40.
With Windsor Park under redevelopment, Linfield have | :00:41. | :00:49.
And not too much rain around if you have outdoor plants in the next few | :00:50. | :01:05.
days. First to the Garth Brooks concerts | :01:06. | :01:09.
in Croke Park this month. The controversy over | :01:10. | :01:11.
the country singer's plan to stage five concerts at GAA's headquarters | :01:12. | :01:13.
came to a head late this afternoon. It was announced all | :01:14. | :01:16.
concerts are cancelled. The decision leaves 400,000 fans who | :01:17. | :01:19.
bought tickets disappointed if not angry at what's happened, not to | :01:20. | :01:24.
mention the hotels, bus companies and restaurants that were preparing | :01:25. | :01:29.
for the giant influx of people. As Kevin Sharkey reports, | :01:30. | :01:33.
today's decision is a dramatic turn of events, five months after fans | :01:34. | :01:37.
queued for hours to get tickets. For Garth Brooks fans, | :01:38. | :01:46.
recent days have been anxious. Late this afternoon came | :01:47. | :01:57.
disappointment. Today we genuinely thought it would go ahead, there is | :01:58. | :02:04.
so much involved, there is no way a handful of residents could stop | :02:05. | :02:05.
something like this. The long wait for these | :02:06. | :02:08.
concerts began in February. Queueing for tickets, small groups | :02:09. | :02:20.
and big numbers of fans. Two concerts were originally planned but | :02:21. | :02:25.
such was the demand that five shows were eventually announced. Here are | :02:26. | :02:30.
the pride tickets people bought at the time but they did not realise | :02:31. | :02:34.
there were a number of problems, including that residents around | :02:35. | :02:38.
Croke Park have an agreement with the authorities that only three | :02:39. | :02:41.
special events can be held in a year, and by the time these tickets | :02:42. | :02:47.
went on sale, the event had been allocated to the boy band one | :02:48. | :02:51.
direction. Plants continued alongside controversy and a judge | :02:52. | :02:57.
that Dublin's High Court allowed a local resident to apply for an | :02:58. | :03:00.
injunction to prevent the contents going ahead. A few hours later, all | :03:01. | :03:04.
five concerts were cancelled. The promoters announced the | :03:05. | :03:09.
decision, saying, Aiken Promotions have exhausted all avenues regarding | :03:10. | :03:11.
the staging of this event. The ticket return process | :03:12. | :03:13.
will be outlined tomorrow. We went down the political route, | :03:14. | :03:20.
every route we could go down and there is nowhere else to go. | :03:21. | :03:26.
Devastated, I cannot believe it. It was a lifetime thing for me. I have | :03:27. | :03:31.
never been to Croke Park, Perth works has been a lifetime idle for | :03:32. | :03:39.
me. Honestly, I am devastated. I feel a bit embarrassed, I do feel | :03:40. | :03:47.
embarrassment. I suppose we are Irish and I feel embarrassment that | :03:48. | :03:53.
it was our country that turned away so much money, especially in such a | :03:54. | :03:57.
bad economic situation. The GAA and Croke Park Stadium said | :03:58. | :04:01.
they regret the cancellation of an event which would have represented | :04:02. | :04:05.
an exciting national event. And while the cancellation is | :04:06. | :04:07.
a victory for some local residents who opposed the five concerts, | :04:08. | :04:09.
for the fans, there's a defeat. And a question - when, if ever, | :04:10. | :04:12.
will Garth Brooks return to And Translink has announced that it | :04:13. | :04:15.
will be refunding customers who had booked to travel to the concerts on | :04:16. | :04:29.
its special coach and rail services. I am joined by Shane Harrison from | :04:30. | :04:37.
Dublin. People are disappointed but what is the initial reaction? Shock, | :04:38. | :04:42.
embarrassment, just some of the words being used to describe the | :04:43. | :04:47.
initial reaction to the cancellation. The Irish | :04:48. | :04:51.
restaurants' Association estimates 50 million euros will be lost to the | :04:52. | :04:55.
Dublin economy because of the cancellation. Enda Kenny said it was | :04:56. | :05:01.
a cute as appointment for fans and there had to be a better and more | :05:02. | :05:05.
efficient way to handle such events in the future. As for the GAA and | :05:06. | :05:13.
the promoters, as just reported, they say they deeply regret what has | :05:14. | :05:18.
happened. The mediator who normally mediates between workers and | :05:19. | :05:23.
management, he has been involved in this recess and said Garth Brooks | :05:24. | :05:28.
feels unwelcome in Ireland, which may come as a surprise to some, | :05:29. | :05:33.
given that nearly half a million people were prepared to pay to go | :05:34. | :05:37.
and see him. There will always be the blame game but it is clear the | :05:38. | :05:43.
residents who did oppose the five concerts stood their ground and | :05:44. | :05:49.
succeeded. They succeeded in many ways but it has to be remembered | :05:50. | :05:52.
there is a division within residents in the area. Some say the other | :05:53. | :05:58.
group does not speak for them but it is the case they did not want these | :05:59. | :06:02.
contoured to go ahead but they say they were shocked because they ought | :06:03. | :06:07.
after Dublin City Council gave the go-ahead for three events, that | :06:08. | :06:08.
would happen. A man and a woman have appeared in | :06:09. | :06:11.
court in connection with the weekend The body of Owen Creaney, who | :06:12. | :06:14.
the police described as "frail and vulnerable", was found in a rubbish | :06:15. | :06:19.
bin at a house in Craigavon. Gordon Adair was at Craigavon Court | :06:20. | :06:22.
for BBC Newsline. Stephen Hughes, on the left, and | :06:23. | :06:35.
Owen Creaney at a party at Stephen Hughes's house on Wednesday. Police | :06:36. | :06:40.
say that within hours of this photo being taken, Hughes and his | :06:41. | :06:47.
co-accused attacked Owen Creaney so severely that he eventually died | :06:48. | :06:52.
from his injuries. The police say the fatally injured man was left in | :06:53. | :06:56.
the house without medical attention for up to two days. They believe he | :06:57. | :06:59.
died on Friday night or early Saturday morning. At lunchtime on | :07:00. | :07:05.
Saturday police received a tip-off that a body had been found in the | :07:06. | :07:07.
house. Initial searches found nothing. Stephen Hughes and | :07:08. | :07:13.
shortening boil each claimed the other was responsible for the | :07:14. | :07:17.
killing during police interviews. At one point information led to police | :07:18. | :07:24.
returning to the house and they found the body in a bin. Even Hughes | :07:25. | :07:29.
did not apply for Bay cashback for bail. -- he did not apply for bail. | :07:30. | :07:37.
The court heard his co-accused had been refused bail after appearing | :07:38. | :07:43.
for an arson offence. Both will appear in court in Craigavon later | :07:44. | :07:44.
this month. There have been more calls | :07:45. | :07:47.
for the sexual abuse suffered by boys at a care home in East Belfast | :07:48. | :07:50.
to be included in the independent investigations into historical abuse | :07:51. | :07:53.
ordered by the Home Secretary. Theresa May says the review | :07:54. | :07:55.
and inquiry will provide maximum transparency, including access to | :07:56. | :08:00.
sensitive government files. The Kincora Boys' Home closed | :08:01. | :08:05.
in 1980 and three members But allegations of involvement by | :08:06. | :08:09.
the security services in covering up This is the former | :08:10. | :08:15.
Kincora Boys' Home on the In the early '80s, it was at | :08:16. | :08:24.
the centre of a scandal which dated I remember sitting on my father's | :08:25. | :08:31.
landscape in Northern Ireland. I remember sitting on my father's | :08:32. | :08:46.
needs but to sit on a stranger's knee, I just felt completely out of | :08:47. | :08:50.
place. Three care workers at the home, | :08:51. | :08:52.
including this man, William McGrath, A leading Orangeman with links to | :08:53. | :08:55.
political unionism and loyalist paramilitaries, he allegedly also | :08:56. | :08:59.
had links to the security services. Chris Moore is the journalist who | :09:00. | :09:02.
investigated events at Kincora. The first police investigation was | :09:03. | :09:18.
blocked by MI5. MI5 had an interest here, which was their agent. They | :09:19. | :09:24.
stopped British intelligence from reporting these matters to the | :09:25. | :09:28.
police and some young men here were brutalised and raped and abused, | :09:29. | :09:33.
while MI5 sat on their hands and allowed it to happen. | :09:34. | :09:35.
More than 30 years on, Kincora remains a scandal that persists. | :09:36. | :09:40.
But Amnesty International says an investigation launched | :09:41. | :09:43.
by the Home Secretary would be able to go further. | :09:44. | :09:53.
We welcome the inquiry established by the Assembly. | :09:54. | :09:58.
Unfortunately, it simply does not have the powers | :09:59. | :10:00.
to reach into Whitehall departments and Secret Service files in | :10:01. | :10:02.
the way that the enquiry announced by Theresa May yesterday will have. | :10:03. | :10:05.
She said it will be able to access wherever and | :10:06. | :10:07.
She said that if necessary, she will grant statutory powers. | :10:08. | :10:13.
That is what we need to get to the bottom of this business. Theresa May | :10:14. | :10:24.
has effectively launched two investigations. One will be into how | :10:25. | :10:29.
police and prosecutors dealt with allegations, the second will be an | :10:30. | :10:33.
in-depth inquiry. Both are at an early stage and it is unclear | :10:34. | :10:37.
whether the abuse at Kincora will feature. | :10:38. | :10:41.
The East Belfast MP Naomi Long has added her voice to those calls | :10:42. | :10:44.
for any UK-wide inquiry or review into historical abuse claims to | :10:45. | :10:47.
Before we came on air, I asked her why she wanted that. | :10:48. | :10:55.
I think it is important to recognise that many of these historic | :10:56. | :11:02.
enquiries will be fraught in that there may not be evidence or records | :11:03. | :11:06.
will have been destroyed, but allegations persist that there was a | :11:07. | :11:09.
political cover-up involved at Kincora and I believe it is | :11:10. | :11:13.
important that is properly investigated. Even the destruction | :11:14. | :11:19.
of records in itself good point to whether there is substance to those | :11:20. | :11:23.
allegations, so by including it in this inquiry we can create clarity | :11:24. | :11:27.
around the situation and have a chance for the back end of Kincora | :11:28. | :11:32.
to top -- to talk openly and freshly about what has happened to them, and | :11:33. | :11:37.
I think that is an important part of any process. But Kincora will be | :11:38. | :11:43.
part of the historical abuse inquiry taking place in Northern Ireland. Is | :11:44. | :11:47.
there not a danger that evidence will be duplicated if it is also | :11:48. | :11:53.
under the review? I understand the concerns about duplication but the | :11:54. | :11:57.
remit of the has to Oracle abuse inquiry that was set up by the | :11:58. | :12:02.
Health Minister is more limited and constrained in that for example it | :12:03. | :12:06.
cannot access files from White House -- from Whitehall or compel | :12:07. | :12:10.
witnesses, so there are issues that are distinct from the inquiry set up | :12:11. | :12:15.
in Westminster. My concern would be given the allegations that there was | :12:16. | :12:20.
political interference and political activity, senior politicians | :12:21. | :12:26.
involved asking Cora, I believe it has a reflection of the kind of | :12:27. | :12:31.
inquiry which will be followed up through the Home Office and I | :12:32. | :12:35.
believe it is important that this is pursuit as part of that package | :12:36. | :12:39.
because until those rumours are properly investigated, we will never | :12:40. | :12:43.
really have the kind of resolution we would wish to seek for those who | :12:44. | :12:46.
were had from utterly by the events at Kincora. -- who were affected | :12:47. | :12:51.
dramatically. Stormont ministers have called for | :12:52. | :12:58.
all parades and protests over the summer to be lawful. A brief | :12:59. | :13:01.
two-line joint statement was issued this afternoon after their scheduled | :13:02. | :13:04.
meeting. At it, the ministers discussed the Parades Commission's | :13:05. | :13:06.
decision to prevent Orangemen returning past the Ardoyne shops in | :13:07. | :13:08.
North Belfast on the evening of July 12th. From Stormont, here's Mark | :13:09. | :13:11.
Devenport. As you say, it was just two lines, | :13:12. | :13:21.
the statement from the Executive parties calling for all parades and | :13:22. | :13:24.
protests to be lawful and acknowledging efforts made by many | :13:25. | :13:28.
people to ensure summer remains peaceful, but given the tension in | :13:29. | :13:34.
North Belfast over the 12th of July, the hats the fact ministers managed | :13:35. | :13:38.
to agree a statement at all is evidence of progress. Here is Gareth | :13:39. | :13:48.
Gordon. They met to discuss decisions on spending, but this is | :13:49. | :13:53.
Northern Ireland in July, where the streets dictate the agenda. The last | :13:54. | :14:02.
time these parties shared a table, the Unionists left early in response | :14:03. | :14:07.
to a decision about the Orange Order. The omens were not the | :14:08. | :14:21.
meeting was there was concern about the public that we would end up in a | :14:22. | :14:26.
row here. There were sensible approaches taken by all leaders | :14:27. | :14:30.
around the table. I take heart in the fact there appears to be | :14:31. | :14:36.
agreement among the parties. It will be important to make sure that | :14:37. | :14:39.
carries through and people use their influence to avoid -- violence | :14:40. | :14:46.
happening in Northern Ireland. A note of caution from the Justice | :14:47. | :14:49.
Minister, but worth the Unionists any happier? I welcome the fact the | :14:50. | :14:54.
discussion took days given it represented progress from the | :14:55. | :14:58.
positions outlined earlier by some parties. But we are still no clearer | :14:59. | :15:04.
about what a graduated response to the parade issue means. You may not | :15:05. | :15:11.
have very long to wait for the next to be announced. It will be | :15:12. | :15:15.
according to our own timetable. We will not be enticed by the questions | :15:16. | :15:22.
of the press. Elsewhere there is still concern about the coming | :15:23. | :15:26.
weekend. This has the potential for serious conflict. I hope camera | :15:27. | :15:32.
minds will seek to ensure that does not happen. -- camera minds. But at | :15:33. | :15:39.
least two day politics was seen to prevail. In the circumstances, this | :15:40. | :15:44.
meeting may have done better than anyone could have expected, but that | :15:45. | :15:54.
does not mean trouble may not lie ahead. Is this feeling that the fire | :15:55. | :15:58.
that was sparked the Parades Commission decision has been put | :15:59. | :16:04.
out? I think most commentators will have been surprised that given that | :16:05. | :16:10.
at the end of May we had a shouting match across the Executive table | :16:11. | :16:14.
after the First Minister's remarks on Islam, today we have a measured | :16:15. | :16:21.
discussion about parades. The fact the statement issued was just two | :16:22. | :16:25.
lines does not necessarily reflect that brevity is the soul of wit as | :16:26. | :16:29.
far as dormant is concerned, but they will have more difficulties | :16:30. | :16:34.
having a comprehensive agreement when dealing with the issue of | :16:35. | :16:39.
parades. Ministers were supposed to make decisions on spending. Many | :16:40. | :16:44.
people were waiting for those decisions but it seems they have | :16:45. | :16:49.
been put on the long finger. They will have more discussions during | :16:50. | :16:55.
the next few days about many million pounds worth of decisions, it looks | :16:56. | :17:02.
like they face 3% cuts but there is difficulty getting the ministers in | :17:03. | :17:06.
charge of those departments to agree to those cuts. If they do not, the | :17:07. | :17:13.
First Minister warns ?83 million in capital may have to be returned to | :17:14. | :17:15.
London in the next few weeks. A bakery could face legal action | :17:16. | :17:18.
for refusing a customer's request to make a cake with | :17:19. | :17:21.
a slogan supporting gay marriage. The Equality Commission has | :17:22. | :17:23.
written to Ashers Baking Company. Its owners said | :17:24. | :17:27.
their strong views prevented them from being able to fulfil the order | :17:28. | :17:30.
made by a gay rights campaigner. "Support Gay Marriage" - | :17:31. | :17:35.
the words a customer, who is also a gay rights activist, wanted | :17:36. | :17:42.
printed on a cake which they'd ordered from Ashers Baking Company | :17:43. | :17:46.
in Belfast a number of weeks ago. They also wanted the cake to feature | :17:47. | :17:51.
the logo of a local campaign group called Queerspace alongside the | :17:52. | :17:54.
Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie. The customer wanted the cake | :17:55. | :17:58.
made for an anti-homophobia event hosted by the Alliance Party | :17:59. | :18:03.
councillor Andrew Muir After some consideration, | :18:04. | :18:06.
Asher's Baking Company refused the request to make the cake as it | :18:07. | :18:12.
was at odds with their beliefs. Six weeks later, | :18:13. | :18:17.
they received a letter from the Equality Commission which | :18:18. | :18:19.
said that they had discriminated against the customer on the grounds | :18:20. | :18:22.
of his sexual orientation. The company was founded | :18:23. | :18:27.
in Newtownabbey in 1992. Its general manager, | :18:28. | :18:30.
Daniel McArthur, recorded a statement which the | :18:31. | :18:33.
Christian Institute posted online. I feel that if we don't take a stand | :18:34. | :18:42.
with this case, how can we stand up I would like the outcome | :18:43. | :18:46.
of this to be that any Christians running a business could be allowed | :18:47. | :18:51.
to follow their Christian beliefs and principles in the day-to-day | :18:52. | :18:54.
running of their business. And that they are allowed to make | :18:55. | :19:04.
decisions based on that. Gay rights campaigners are | :19:05. | :19:10.

the Equality Commission said it has granted assistance to | :19:32. | :19:35.

would have loved to be at Windsor Park but that is under | :20:13. | :20:18.

obviously taking this seriously. It is a dangerous game for us because a | :20:39. | :20:44.
lot of people are sending text message and they have nothing to | :20:45. | :20:49.
lose tonight, but I am confident that we will see this job through. | :20:50. | :20:55.
You have played international football, many World Cup qualifiers. | :20:56. | :21:00.
Do you expect Brazil versus Germany to affect the crowd tonight? I hope | :21:01. | :21:07.
not, but my focus is on the infield and what we have to do. Hopefully | :21:08. | :21:11.
the fans will turn out in numbers to support us. Brazil or Germany? I am | :21:12. | :21:17.
going for Brazil. Linfield or Torshavn? Linfield. | :21:18. | :21:23.
Derry City travel to Wales tomorrow ahead of Thursday?s | :21:24. | :21:25.
Peter Hutton?s men have a four-goal cushion, but as Keiron Tourish | :21:26. | :21:33.
They're very city cruised to a con double victory against the Welsh | :21:34. | :21:40.
side last Thursday, although the candy striped hit the net four | :21:41. | :21:45.
times, it could have been a more comprehensive score. The boss says | :21:46. | :21:52.
he is taking nothing for granted. They went over and got beaten in | :21:53. | :22:02.
five, so it can be done and it is important that we do a good job over | :22:03. | :22:08.
there. One city player who is on top form having scored in the last two | :22:09. | :22:15.
games says Gerry must they focused on completing the job in Wales. | :22:16. | :22:18.
After beating them here, they were down to ten men so you cannot read | :22:19. | :22:25.
too much into it, but we will be confident enough going there and | :22:26. | :22:29.
hoping to get into the next round. Although very city have established | :22:30. | :22:33.
a comfortable lead here at Brandywell, Peter Hutton is guarding | :22:34. | :22:38.
against complacency. He wants to take his team to Wales and finished | :22:39. | :22:39.
the job in style. The Commonwealth Games are now just | :22:40. | :22:45.
a fortnight away and one of Martyn Irvine is already proven | :22:46. | :22:48.
on the world stage. He picked up a bronze medal in Delhi | :22:49. | :22:54.
four years ago and is going The world champion and winner of the | :22:55. | :23:13.
Gold medal. He is Northern Ireland's most accomplished track | :23:14. | :23:17.
cyclist but in his pursuit of success he has moved to Colorado. It | :23:18. | :23:25.
is a nice life, possibly too nice, I could fall into eating burgers and | :23:26. | :23:33.
drinking beer so it is a good lifestyle but lots of racing to be | :23:34. | :23:37.
done, so for me I am in the right spot. But it is back home in | :23:38. | :23:44.
Northern Ireland that Irvine won cycling to capitalise on the success | :23:45. | :23:50.
of the Giro d'Italia. There are more bums on seats, more cycling around | :23:51. | :23:55.
the place. That coverage that cycling has received has been | :23:56. | :23:56.
the place. That coverage that massive and hopefully people can | :23:57. | :24:00.
capitalise on that. We might even get a velodrome. And Martyn Irvine | :24:01. | :24:05.
leads from the front. At this get a velodrome. And Martyn Irvine | :24:06. | :24:12.
month's Commonwealth Games, he was listed as competing in seven events | :24:13. | :24:17.
but that will not be that case. I reckon four, maybe, four or five. | :24:18. | :24:28.
The road race, maybe for maximum. A bit of track and race will do me. | :24:29. | :24:35.
Irvine has been successful before in Glasgow and he hopes that experience | :24:36. | :24:42.
will help expand his medal tally. I won my first World Cup medals there. | :24:43. | :24:47.
I won two silvers in 2012 so I had a good dummy run. It is all on my | :24:48. | :24:55.
shoulders, all I can do is not get them, and I am in a good place to do | :24:56. | :25:01.
with so I hope to waive some medal around. And if he does, it will be a | :25:02. | :25:09.
feeling that he knows all too well. Torshavn have just taken the field. | :25:10. | :25:14.
We will bring you the late goals, if there are any, later tonight. Blue | :25:15. | :25:20.
skies in Lurgan. Let's get the forecast. If you got caught in the | :25:21. | :25:28.
showers today you will be glad to hear it is more settled in the next | :25:29. | :25:31.
24 hours, but it was disappointing in places, as evident with the | :25:32. | :25:36.
abandoned beachball floating in the rain. Starting off with race skies | :25:37. | :25:44.
and they did brighten. We had some heavy downpours moving south this | :25:45. | :25:47.
afternoon, which have mostly cleared away, but for many of us the better | :25:48. | :25:51.
part of the day, some lovely sunshine on offer. Tonight stays dry | :25:52. | :25:57.
with clear spells. Similar temperatures to last night so not | :25:58. | :26:02.
too bad with towns sitting around ten or 11 degrees. Tomorrow we have | :26:03. | :26:09.
the promise of a better day, dry and bright sunny spells. We will find | :26:10. | :26:14.
that sunshine across many parts of Northern Ireland during the morning | :26:15. | :26:17.
but by afternoon the best sunshine will be reserved for the north and | :26:18. | :26:23.
east, and for parts of south Armagh, temperatures getting up to 19 or 20. | :26:24. | :26:28.
A bit more cloud pushing west through the afternoon but even then | :26:29. | :26:32.
there will still be bright spells, still dry. Some sunshine still on | :26:33. | :26:37.
offer for the north Coast but they're in mind they still have that | :26:38. | :26:42.
northerly onshore breeze so it might be a little fresh on the beach. By | :26:43. | :26:46.
tomorrow evening, the best sunshine reserved for eastern areas. That | :26:47. | :26:52.
cloud in the west will gather through tomorrow night and we expect | :26:53. | :26:55.
rain to move in, maybe light rain across central and western areas. We | :26:56. | :27:01.
are in for a dull, drizzly start, a lot of that will feature out leaving | :27:02. | :27:07.
the odd shower, but not a lot of sunshine and given those | :27:08. | :27:11.
temperatures of 19 or 20 Celsius, it could feel muggy. As we approach the | :27:12. | :27:17.
weekend weather front moves in which is likely to bring rain on Friday | :27:18. | :27:22.
night and into Saturday. Before we go, are you one of the 400,000 | :27:23. | :27:28.
holders of a ticket for one of the cancelled Garth Brooks concert? We | :27:29. | :27:32.
would like to hear from you. Contact details are on the screen. Are you | :27:33. | :27:34.
out of pocket? Our late summary is | :27:35. | :27:38.
at the later time of 11:10pm following | :27:39. | :27:40.
the World Cup semifinal match. Free tickets are available | :27:41. | :28:03.
by random draw. | :28:04. | :28:05. |
