Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline... | :00:00. | :00:16.

Calls for Nelson McAusland to quit after he's found to have misled | :00:22. | :00:23.
It looks like everyone is here tonight on the North Coast! | :00:24. | :00:39.
A world champion will lead out the NI team at the Commonwealth | :00:40. | :00:42.
And we've done it again - today is now the hottest day of the | :00:43. | :00:52.
year so far, but it could be even warmer tomorrow, so don't miss the | :00:53. | :00:55.
A man who was shot in both legs in Londonderry last night was | :00:56. | :01:02.
"shot by appointment", that's according to the DUP. | :01:03. | :01:06.
The attack was carried out in a play park in the mainly loyalist Lincoln | :01:07. | :01:09.
The Police have described it as horrific and barbaric | :01:10. | :01:13.
Here's our North-West reporter, Keiron Tourish. | :01:14. | :01:22.
The horror of the play park shooting - specialist | :01:23. | :01:25.
cleaners from the DoE had to be brought in to remove blood from | :01:26. | :01:29.
the streets of this housing estate in the Waterside area of the city. | :01:30. | :01:32.
Most of the footage is too graphic to be broadcast. | :01:33. | :01:35.
A 32-year-old man was targeted here at half past eleven last night. | :01:36. | :01:44.
He was shot in both legs only a few feet from | :01:45. | :01:47.
It's understood he made his way from the scene back to his home | :01:48. | :01:51.
a short distance away, a scene which shocked local residents. | :01:52. | :01:57.
It is terrible. I thought these things were over. That is a shock. | :01:58. | :02:05.
You like to think you're living in a safe area and you do not want any | :02:06. | :02:08.
things like that. The DUP say the man who was shot was | :02:09. | :02:14.
told to turn up here in advance so this punishment style attack | :02:15. | :02:18.
could be carried out. The party says there can be | :02:19. | :02:20.
no justification for it. It is totally disgusting that this | :02:21. | :02:28.
happened in a playpark. This area has been relatively quiet over the | :02:29. | :02:33.
last year, as have a lot of loyalist areas. I am surprised and shocked | :02:34. | :02:39.
that this has happened. But to happen in a playpark where you have | :02:40. | :02:44.
children playing, any child coming up here, there is a trail of blood. | :02:45. | :02:50.
It is down into the residential area. I think it is crazy and the | :02:51. | :02:54.
people who did this need a good look at themselves. | :02:55. | :02:56.
The Police say they've interviewed the victim in hospital where he's | :02:57. | :02:58.
Detectives are keeping an open mind as to the motive for the attack. | :02:59. | :03:07.
It is a horrific attack. A beautiful evening last night and this man was | :03:08. | :03:13.
shot in each leg. He is seriously injured. Thankfully he is getting | :03:14. | :03:18.
medical treatment. It was barbaric. It sends out all the wrong signals. | :03:19. | :03:23.
It has brought great injury to the victim. It is important we track | :03:24. | :03:26.
down those responsible and bring them to justice. Police have issued | :03:27. | :03:30.
an appeal for information. They want to hear from anyone who noticed any | :03:31. | :03:34.
suspicious activity or who witnessed the shooting to get in touch. | :03:35. | :03:39.
There've been calls for the resignation of a | :03:40. | :03:41.
DUP Minister after a Stormont committee found he'd misled it. | :03:42. | :03:43.
Only the members of Nelsons McCausland's own party disagreed | :03:44. | :03:45.
with the verdict of the majority of MLAs on the Social Development | :03:46. | :03:52.
Committee who are carrying out an inquiry into allegations of | :03:53. | :03:56.
political interference in the running of the Housing Executive. Mr | :03:57. | :03:58.
McCausland denies he misled the committee and has described | :03:59. | :04:00.
Here's our political correspondent Gareth Gordon. | :04:01. | :04:07.
The inquiry was launched after this BBC Spotlight programme alleged | :04:08. | :04:10.
political interference in the running of the Housing Executive. | :04:11. | :04:15.
The first issue it considered was a meeting the minister held | :04:16. | :04:18.
in April 2012 to discuss double glazing contracts. | :04:19. | :04:23.
He claimed it was with a body called the Glass and Glazing Federation, | :04:24. | :04:27.
In fact it was with a company called Turkington's which has in | :04:28. | :04:30.
In light of the witness evidence given to date and the recent | :04:31. | :04:43.
document discovery exercise within my department, I'm acknowledge I | :04:44. | :04:49.
inadvertently and unintentionally misinformed the committee in this | :04:50. | :04:52.
letter. Let me ask you you that this was not in anyway deliberate. I | :04:53. | :04:58.
never sought to hide that staff from Turkington's were there on 16th | :04:59. | :05:02.
April. I simply believe they were representing the federation. | :05:03. | :05:04.
But a majority of the committee found that determined efforts that | :05:05. | :05:07.
the Minister and his Special Adviser made to remove Turkington's | :05:08. | :05:09.
from the record were neither unintentional nor inadvertent. | :05:10. | :05:15.
This is the only jurisdiction in western democracy where a minister | :05:16. | :05:20.
would face such charges and still remain in office. His own party | :05:21. | :05:25.
should take action and tickets quickly and effectively. It is a | :05:26. | :05:29.
serious conclusion the committee has reached and there clearly are | :05:30. | :05:32.
serious questions needing to be addressed by those who have been | :05:33. | :05:33.
named in this report. This DUP committee member claims | :05:34. | :05:35.
the inquiry is a witch hunt. I do not believe that he has done | :05:36. | :05:44.
anything wrong other than hold meetings with a company which, as a | :05:45. | :05:50.
result of those meetings, he has saved millions of pounds for the | :05:51. | :05:53.
public purse which means there is more money to spend on other things | :05:54. | :05:58.
in housing. That is not a minister who is neglecting his duty, he is | :05:59. | :06:00.
doing his duty. It's emerged that earlier this | :06:01. | :06:01.
month, Mr McCausland wrote to the committee claiming the report | :06:02. | :06:03.
is fundamentally flawed and weak in its analysis and statement of | :06:04. | :06:06.
the facts and therefore should not The majority | :06:07. | :06:08.
of committee members also expressed "deep concern about the inaction of | :06:09. | :06:12.
senior civil servants" to robustly challenge the Minister | :06:13. | :06:17.
when they "knew he was factually incorrect in his statements to | :06:18. | :06:19.
the Assembly and the Committee.? But the DSD's Permanent Secretary, | :06:20. | :06:29.
Will Haire, wrote to them saying officials felt the need to put | :06:30. | :06:31.
on record their "disagreement" with the report's views "in relation | :06:32. | :06:34.
to the role of civil servants." Nelson McCausland was not giving any | :06:35. | :06:46.
interviews today. The inquiry is far from over. It begins in September | :06:47. | :06:50.
and this report will be evaded in the Assembly. -- debated. | :06:51. | :06:54.
In fact the committee intends to double | :06:55. | :06:56.
the number of evidence sessions in the autumn from one to two a week. | :06:57. | :07:01.
Still to come... It has been so busy here on the | :07:02. | :07:09.
north coast there will be big traffic jams and big queues for ice | :07:10. | :07:10.
cream. The jury has retired to consider | :07:11. | :07:23.
its verdict in the case of John Brown, the brother | :07:24. | :07:26.
of Eurovision winner and former The 60-year-old from Bracknell is | :07:27. | :07:28.
accused of five counts of indecent assault against two girls aged as | :07:29. | :07:32.
young as five and ten in the 1970s. It's been alleged during the trial | :07:33. | :07:35.
that his sister Dana helped to keep the alleged attacks secret for more | :07:36. | :07:39.
than 30 years - something she denied The jury has been told by | :07:40. | :07:42.
the judge to be "coolly analytical" The Northern Ireland Executive is | :07:43. | :07:48.
coming under pressure to make up a shortfall | :07:49. | :08:02.

involved in the project said he was Here's our business | :08:05. | :08:08.
correspondent Julian O'Neill. The jail's conversion into a hotel | :08:09. | :08:12.

fearful the project could be lost. It is hugely disappointed | :08:16. | :08:21.
its private development partner may withdraw his 11 million | :08:22. | :08:23.
because Stormont departments will One MLA believes they want to | :08:24. | :08:25.
be cautious with public money. It will be disappointing for the | :08:26. | :08:42.
developer to walk away but the reality is there have been questions | :08:43. | :08:46.
over the business case over the last number of months. If the business | :08:47. | :08:50.
case stacks up, I do not see any reason as to why people can't | :08:51. | :08:51.
support that. The developer wants a pledge | :08:52. | :08:52.
of an extra ?4 million by September and after seven years work neither | :08:53. | :08:56.
he nor Armagh wishes to go back to Scaling back on the project's cost | :08:57. | :09:10.
is not considered a preferable option. The city council feels | :09:11. | :09:14.
reducing the capital will reduce the regeneration potential of this | :09:15. | :09:15.
project. By regeneration, the council does | :09:16. | :09:16.
not just mean jobs in a hotel, And investment like this should be | :09:17. | :09:30.
very welcome and government, I think, should do all in its power to | :09:31. | :09:35.
secure that development. The contribution being asked of the | :09:36. | :09:39.
public purse in relative terms is quite small. | :09:40. | :09:40.
The council has written to the Office of the First and Deputy | :09:41. | :09:43.
It has not given up, but is now pinning its hopes | :09:44. | :09:47.
Staying with the economy and a major regeneration project in Strabane has | :09:48. | :09:55.
been given the go-ahead by the Environment Minister Mark H Durkan. | :09:56. | :09:58.
The Three Rivers project will involve developing a 50 acre site | :09:59. | :10:03.
It will include a hotel, business park and wildlife centre. | :10:04. | :10:08.
The developers claim it could eventually create work | :10:09. | :10:10.
But some retailers say the inclusion of a supermarket in | :10:11. | :10:15.
the plan could have a devastating impact on the town centre. | :10:16. | :10:19.
Our Economics and Business Editor John Campbell is here. | :10:20. | :10:26.
The potential of 1000 jobs on a 50 acre site is quite substantial? This | :10:27. | :10:35.
is probably the biggest regeneration scheme Strabane has seen in a | :10:36. | :10:39.
generation. The developers say that all told, they look to spend about | :10:40. | :10:45.
?50 million and include a hotel, a supermarket, leisure facilities, a | :10:46. | :10:49.
sports centre and wider environmental improvement of the | :10:50. | :10:52.
area. They say it is not just about Strabane but that it will bring | :10:53. | :10:57.
benefits to the whole area. Retailers are not happy, why? | :10:58. | :11:01.
Originally this scheme did not contain a retail element then in | :11:02. | :11:06.
2012, there was a new planning application which included a | :11:07. | :11:10.
supermarket. Retailers and the chamber of commerce say they are for | :11:11. | :11:16.
anything which improves Strabane but put a new supermarket on the | :11:17. | :11:19.
outskirts of the town and it will make things impossible for retailers | :11:20. | :11:21.
in the town centre. They say it is tough enough to make a living as a | :11:22. | :11:26.
retailer in Strabane, and if they have to compete with an out-of-town | :11:27. | :11:30.
centre it will be impossible. They say that the Planning Minister and | :11:31. | :11:34.
the Environment Minister, Mark H Durkan, came up with the policy | :11:35. | :11:39.
called Town Centres First a few months ago and it is all about | :11:40. | :11:43.
retail in town centres. He is riding roughshod over his own policy. What | :11:44. | :11:50.
has the Minister said in response to the concerns? The minister says he | :11:51. | :11:56.
has never said never, he has just said town centres first. He has to | :11:57. | :12:02.
take a broader view of the economic impact of any application. He says | :12:03. | :12:05.
when you look at a town like Strabane and its problems, he will | :12:06. | :12:09.
not apologise for making the decision the development to go | :12:10. | :12:13.
ahead. We all know that Strabane is an area of high deprivation and one | :12:14. | :12:18.
that needs any boost it can get. Strabane does not get that many | :12:19. | :12:23.
chances and I am certainly happy to approve this project to give it the | :12:24. | :12:27.
chance. What will happen next with the project? It will be down to the | :12:28. | :12:32.
developers to a pointy contractors. You could also possibly see the | :12:33. | :12:35.
retailers rang to challenge the decision in the courts. -- trying to | :12:36. | :12:38.
challenge. It's been blue skies pretty much | :12:39. | :12:40.
across Northern Ireland today. Yesterday we'd the hottest day of | :12:41. | :12:43.
the year so far with temperatures That was recorded at the Giant's | :12:44. | :12:46.
Causeway on the north coast. And that's where BBC Newsline Mark | :12:47. | :12:49.
Simpson headed off to this morning. We are looking at another good few | :12:50. | :13:02.
days. I can see you have plenty of sun cream. Did we reach a record | :13:03. | :13:07.
high? I have never seen anything like it, | :13:08. | :13:11.
particularly here in Portstewart when I arrived at around ten o'clock | :13:12. | :13:15.
this morning it was already a sweltering 24 degrees. Have a look | :13:16. | :13:22.
at what it is like here tonight. People are enjoying themselves. | :13:23. | :13:25.
There are three words to describe it had a - hot, hot, hot. It is not | :13:26. | :13:34.
spin, it is not Portugal. It's not Brazil, its Northern Ireland. | :13:35. | :13:38.
Visitors who came here expecting rain rather than sunshine could not | :13:39. | :13:42.
quite believe it. I love it, it is really nice. It is like this all the | :13:43. | :13:49.
time. Know it is not! This is the first time it has been sunny. The | :13:50. | :13:54.
weather in Cyprus is normally 13 degrees but it is nice here. It is | :13:55. | :14:04.
cooler? Yes. In Cyprus you're used to high temperatures that this is | :14:05. | :14:09.
Portstewart. When the weather is good people, I'd earlier and stay | :14:10. | :14:12.
later and everybody is in better form. It helps the ice cream sales. | :14:13. | :14:17.
It is good for everybody. I love it but it is too hot for working. I am | :14:18. | :14:23.
going on holiday on Saturday so I can sunbathe then! It was so hard, | :14:24. | :14:28.
no wonder so many people came to Portrush to try to cool down. Even | :14:29. | :14:35.
the water is pretty warm - it is not often you can say that about the | :14:36. | :14:40.
north coast. And when the weather is so good it is only right to make a | :14:41. | :14:46.
song and dance. And here, fresh from Britain's Got Talent, and Irish | :14:47. | :14:55.
dancing group. Across Northern Ireland, the sun was shining. It has | :14:56. | :14:59.
been a relatively good summer so far, but nothing quite like this. | :15:00. | :15:04.
The longer the day went on, the hotter it got. It brought back | :15:05. | :15:10.
memories of last year's heatwave. And it looks like it is not going to | :15:11. | :15:15.
be a one-day wonder, with more sunshine to come this week from | :15:16. | :15:19.
morning to evening, from east to west, and from coast-to-coast. As | :15:20. | :15:29.
always, the good weather has taken a lot of people by surprise and | :15:30. | :15:33.
talking to the hotels around here and the B owners, they say they do | :15:34. | :15:38.
have some availability left for the rest of the week. As we know, the | :15:39. | :15:41.
weather for the rest of the week is supposed to be very good, maybe even | :15:42. | :15:46.
hotter than today. If I don't turn up for work tomorrow, you will know | :15:47. | :15:48.
where I am. Join me in Glasgow as we assess | :15:49. | :15:50.

headlines are fact. Members of the Northern Ireland Youth Forum have | :17:59. | :18:04.
strong opinions on both sides of the argument. I have support for it as | :18:05. | :18:14.
long as is supported properly. We are looking at economic issues which | :18:15. | :18:19.
could come as a result of fracking. It is one of the ways we could step | :18:20. | :18:24.
forward. I am and Ty fracking. The devastation that will be left behind | :18:25. | :18:30.
will not be paid for. They will take all the profits. We won't even see | :18:31. | :18:35.
any of the gas. It will just be exported for profitability. Jobs, I | :18:36. | :18:42.
say, what jobs? Some may have had their minds made up but others were | :18:43. | :18:46.
swayed by what they heard from their peers. You think that in ten or 15 | :18:47. | :18:50.
years, we will have to do with the consequences. I think it is | :18:51. | :18:54.
important that they are the ones to discuss the issue now. Even night | :18:55. | :19:02.
with the recent events, you can see the conflict in the room. Whether | :19:03. | :19:06.
fracking goes ahead or not will affect not just the people in this | :19:07. | :19:12.
room but everyone. The debate will continue. | :19:13. | :19:19.

Very little. The opening ceremony takes place this evening at the | :19:36. | :19:38.

gold at the World Track Championships becoming the first | :20:10. | :20:13.
Irishman to do so and 117 years. He is a big medal contender here in | :20:14. | :20:20.
Glasgow. But there is disappointment today for another cyclist, Wendy | :20:21. | :20:23.
Houvenaghel. She has had to pull out of the Games with a back injury. She | :20:24. | :20:28.
has decided to retire from competitive cycling. She calls time | :20:29. | :20:31.
on a glittering career that saw her win multiple titles as well as | :20:32. | :20:36.
Commonwealth and Olympic silver medals. The action all starts | :20:37. | :20:41.
tomorrow and Northern Ireland have plenty of competitors to look out | :20:42. | :20:45.
for. Can we get off to a winning start? | :20:46. | :20:59.
The women's lawn bowls team hope to scale the heights tomorrow as they | :21:00. | :21:03.
start Northern Ireland's quest for silverware in Glasgow just hours | :21:04. | :21:08.
after the opening ceremony finishes. Across the city at the Strathclyde | :21:09. | :21:13.
Country Park, a Londonderry triathlete will find out if the long | :21:14. | :21:18.
hours training will pave the way for a medic. I know I can perform well | :21:19. | :21:24.
when I am at my best. It is just about that I do not feel pressure | :21:25. | :21:29.
from outside on having to do well. I just want to do the best I can do so | :21:30. | :21:33.
hopefully with the climate and proximity of home, and having home | :21:34. | :21:39.
support, I should really do well. Sticking with the water and we are | :21:40. | :21:51.
leading the charge in summing. At the Exhibition Centre, we are | :21:52. | :21:57.
bidding in the judo. Scotland is my second homes of this is a home games | :21:58. | :22:01.
for me. I have so much support there as well. I think it is even more | :22:02. | :22:06.
special. I just want to focus on my performance. I am feeling confident | :22:07. | :22:10.
and that I will perform well. If I do the results will take care of | :22:11. | :22:16.
themselves. For the first time ever, Northern Ireland will be represented | :22:17. | :22:19.
in the sport of netball at the Commonwealth Games. The lady says | :22:20. | :22:25.
Mullaly at the SECC. -- the lady 's face Mullaly. | :22:26. | :22:34.
The boxing competition is where Northern Ireland has traditionally | :22:35. | :22:36.
always done well at the Commonwealth Games. | :22:37. | :22:38.
Four years ago the team returned from Delhi with | :22:39. | :22:40.
five medals and, historically, our boxers have won more medals | :22:41. | :22:42.
Hopes are high here again, especially as we have top women | :22:43. | :22:46.
Women's boxing makes its Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow | :22:47. | :23:01.
and Northern Ireland has two fighters determined to make their | :23:02. | :23:05.
mark. Michaela Walsh already has medals from European and World | :23:06. | :23:08.
Championships and is continuing a strong family tradition in the | :23:09. | :23:15.
sport. My brother boxes and my father is a coach. I asked if I | :23:16. | :23:21.
could try and he said it was not for girls. I kept torturing him and he | :23:22. | :23:25.
finally got me there and I have been in the sport ever since. And I am | :23:26. | :23:31.
not on the Commonwealth team. It is the best feeling in the world. -- I | :23:32. | :23:39.
am now on the Commonwealth team. Li-wen of -- Li-wen for Britain was | :23:40. | :23:52.
celebrated. She is the reason that women's boxing is where it is and | :23:53. | :23:57.
especially she is from Ireland, it gives us more confidence. We have | :23:58. | :24:04.
got the best pound for pound girls ranking in the world. There is no | :24:05. | :24:08.
better preparation and training alongside an athlete like Katie | :24:09. | :24:12.
Taylor. Four years ago the Northern Ireland squad topped the boxing | :24:13. | :24:15.
medals table with three gold and two silver. Michael Conlan lost in the | :24:16. | :24:19.
quarterfinals but is determined to make up for the disappointment. I | :24:20. | :24:24.
definitely think I am full of confidence. I am a lot stronger and | :24:25. | :24:31.
I have a four -- I am a far better fighter. I was only a kid then. I | :24:32. | :24:35.
did not have the mental strength for it. This time I am super-confident. | :24:36. | :24:42.
I am going to win gold. Paddy Barnes will defend his Commonwealth title | :24:43. | :24:47.
and the two-time Olympic bronze medallist is out to prove that age | :24:48. | :24:53.
is no barrier to success. I act like I am the youngest even though I am | :24:54. | :24:56.
the oldest. It is very young and very inexperienced, the team. But | :24:57. | :25:01.
the talent is there, there is no doubt about it. We discredit I do | :25:02. | :25:10.
our best. Boxing has produced medals for Northern Ireland and there is no | :25:11. | :25:13.
reason to think I it will be any different in Glasgow. | :25:14. | :25:20.
Andrew White today became Northern Ireland's most capped cricketer of | :25:21. | :25:26.
all time, 227 games not out. Quite a record. Cecilia can tell us what we | :25:27. | :25:40.
can expect from the weather. You are at Lee Dickson Park? | :25:41. | :25:45.
The hottest part of the day may have passed but it is still very warm | :25:46. | :25:51.
here. There is still quite a few people wandering between the roses. | :25:52. | :25:55.
It is a particularly good show this year. That is not my opinion, I | :25:56. | :25:59.
spoke to an expert earlier. The sunshine has brought out the blooms. | :26:00. | :26:04.
To keep the life of the Roses going they need some water at the roots. | :26:05. | :26:08.
It looks like that will come this weekend. How hot has it been? The | :26:09. | :26:14.
hotspot was Castlederg with 27.2 degrees. It is likely that tomorrow | :26:15. | :26:18.
will be hotter still. Many people have been cooling down on the north | :26:19. | :26:22.
coast, not just because Mark Simpson was there. Some people have been | :26:23. | :26:29.
taking a dip at Portstewart. If you fancy coming down to Grows Weak, it | :26:30. | :26:34.
continues to the end of the week. Warm sunshine coming over the next | :26:35. | :26:40.
couple of days. The shower will sprinkle over the roses and make | :26:41. | :26:43.
them look even nicer on Saturday. Getting warm. The temperatures were | :26:44. | :26:48.
not fall that much tonight. 15 or 16 degrees will be the low. Maybe the | :26:49. | :26:54.
odd shower, but most places dry. Tomorrow the headline is for more | :26:55. | :26:57.
hot sunshine. To begin with in the morning there may be some early | :26:58. | :27:01.
morning mist a County Down coast. That should bring back quickly. | :27:02. | :27:05.
There may also be ploughed in the West with one or two light showers. | :27:06. | :27:10.
-- there may also be applied in the West. We can expect lots of very | :27:11. | :27:16.
warm sunshine in the day. Temperatures will range from 20 | :27:17. | :27:19.
degrees on the east coast with the breeze coming off the sea, 226, 27 | :27:20. | :27:24.
or 28 over parts of Tyrone Londonderry. Those could set off | :27:25. | :27:30.
some thundery showers later in the day but there are more likely of | :27:31. | :27:33.
clinical. It is a good day for heading to the beach. As someone | :27:34. | :27:39.
else told me, only leave footprints behind. The weekend is bringing some | :27:40. | :27:44.
showers on Saturday and turning pressure. | :27:45. | :27:49.
Thank you very much. Make most of the good weather. That is it from | :27:50. | :27:54.
the BBC Newsline team. Good night and thanks for watching. | :27:55. | :27:56. |
