There is still five days to go. That is all from us. Don't forget a first

:00:00.:00:00.

still five days to go. A first look at the morning papers on

:00:00.:00:09.

Good evening, and welcome to BBC Newsline.

:00:10.:00:10.

Tributes have been paid to Oswald Bradley, also known as Ossie,

:00:11.:00:13.

who got into difficulties when he was attempting to swim across

:00:14.:00:16.

He was trying to erect a union flag alongside two tricolours which

:00:17.:00:23.

had been put up on a small island. And it cost him his life.

:00:24.:00:26.

Our reporter Helen Jones spent today in the County Armagh village.

:00:27.:00:31.

A family grieving behind closed doors.

:00:32.:00:34.

A father of two and grandfather of four lived here.

:00:35.:00:38.

Described as larger-than-life, Oswald Bradley was

:00:39.:00:41.

a well-known character who loved bowling and country

:00:42.:00:44.

and western music, and this is where he died, a local beauty spot

:00:45.:00:48.

In a mixed village where relationships are said to be good,

:00:49.:00:54.

two tricolours appeared last week on an island in the lake.

:00:55.:00:59.

I've spoken to a few people who say they were here when Oswald Bradley

:01:00.:01:03.

He talked to the friend of a 17-year-old who tried to save him.

:01:04.:01:09.

He said he was going to put a union flag up

:01:10.:01:11.

alongside the two tricolours. He said Bessbrook is 50/50.

:01:12.:01:16.

He got into the water and that was when he shouted

:01:17.:01:20.

This is where he collected his newspaper every day,

:01:21.:01:26.

There wasn't a sectarian bone in Ossie Bradley's body, but he felt

:01:27.:01:34.

strongly that the values of shared space had been breached by the

:01:35.:01:39.

planting of Irish tricolour flags and he felt strongly that no-ne else

:01:40.:01:46.

was doing anything about it and he needed to, with tragic consequences.

:01:47.:01:52.

Last week Sinn Fein called for the people who put

:01:53.:01:54.

It took a guess for that to happen. -- it took a death.

:01:55.:02:08.

They were removed by the police with agreement

:02:09.:02:10.

A man gave his life and I think we should respect the fact he died

:02:11.:02:15.

doing something he wanted to do, but it is an opportunity that his memory

:02:16.:02:18.

should not be of someone trying to remove flags but that would

:02:19.:02:21.

Touched by tragedy, a memorial to the victims of Kingsmills.

:02:22.:02:25.

Oswald Bradley's cousin was one of ten workmen killed in 1966.

:02:26.:02:31.

One survivor was his lifelong friend.

:02:32.:02:36.

In a small village like this, everyone pulls together.

:02:37.:02:40.

We unite when something goes wrong, but Ossie, if there was a death in

:02:41.:02:43.

any house, Ossie with be among the first to be there with a tray of

:02:44.:02:47.

sandwiches and cake asking if they needed anything, that is the kind of

:02:48.:02:52.

A simple act, and lost in thought, a wreath is laid.

:02:53.:03:00.

Friends, family and a close-knit community in mourning.

:03:01.:03:07.

A mother whose home was damaged in a hate crime attack in

:03:08.:03:10.

East Belfast last night says she no longer feels safe there.

:03:11.:03:14.

Paint was thrown, windows smashed and cars damaged in eight incidents

:03:15.:03:18.

in the area late last night. Ciara Riddell reports.

:03:19.:03:28.

There have been racist attacks in this area before, but nothing on

:03:29.:03:31.

this scale. There is barely a gable wall free

:03:32.:03:33.

from racist graffiti in the streets off Bloomfield Avenue.

:03:34.:03:36.

Homes and cars were also attacked. This woman

:03:37.:03:40.

and her children were victims. They moved here

:03:41.:03:43.

from Slovakia two years ago. I'm sitting in this room, my

:03:44.:04:01.

children also, boom, I don't know what is it. It surprises us.

:04:02.:04:12.

It shook me up last night because I am a nervy person anyway

:04:13.:04:19.

and it scared me, so what would it be like for the families?

:04:20.:04:22.

They have to think about the children, they're in the house too.

:04:23.:04:28.

The police are investigating eight incidents of hate crime

:04:29.:04:33.

and say they are doing everything they can to find those responsible.

:04:34.:04:36.

Politicians are also calling for calm.

:04:37.:04:37.

There was a level of orchestration to these attacks.

:04:38.:04:40.

However, at this stage it is impossible to say whether any

:04:41.:04:43.

We would appeal to members of the community, especially in that area,

:04:44.:04:49.

or anyone who has any information about these attacks, to come forward

:04:50.:04:57.

And provide that information to detectives. It cannot go on. People

:04:58.:05:07.

need to come together and show these people that they are welcome in the

:05:08.:05:11.

area and if they have any information, bring it to police to

:05:12.:05:21.

bring these people to justice. Council workers arrived early to

:05:22.:05:26.

cover the graffiti, but the damage to community relations here will

:05:27.:05:27.

take longer to erase. The home of the DUP mayor

:05:28.:05:31.

of Coleraine has been attacked. Graffiti was daubed on the wall

:05:32.:05:33.

of George Duddy's house The councillor says two of his

:05:34.:05:36.

neighbours were also singled out. A corrosive liquid was poured over

:05:37.:05:39.

a car parked in Granary Drive, while a union flag was removed

:05:40.:05:42.

from the front of a house in Quilly Road and graffiti was

:05:43.:05:45.

spray-painted on the front porch. The police have recovered what they

:05:46.:05:55.

believe are confident parts for a bomb in Strabane. The items were

:05:56.:05:59.

found in a search of a derelict outhouse.

:06:00.:06:01.

Time now to head over to Glasgow for the latest on Northern Ireland

:06:02.:06:04.

athletes in the Commonwealth Games from Stephen Watson.

:06:05.:06:07.

Northern Ireland now has five Commonwealth Games medals.

:06:08.:06:14.

Following a silver in bowls and a bronze in judo, tonight

:06:15.:06:16.

Joe Fitzpatrick, Sean Duffy and Sean McGlinchey all

:06:17.:06:20.

won their quarterfinal bouts to guarantee at least bronze.

:06:21.:06:23.

They will now have a chance to go on and fight for gold.

:06:24.:06:27.

And Team NI have six more fighters just one win away

:06:28.:06:30.

Boxing is our most successful sports at the Commonwealth Games. And in

:06:31.:06:48.

Glasgow, are fighters are excelling again. Joe Fitzpatrick was first in

:06:49.:06:56.

action this evening. Good left hand out of that. The teenager from the

:06:57.:07:02.

Anne to the Anne two that I club suffered a cut on his cheque. --

:07:03.:07:15.

immaculate. Through to the semifinal, in the red corner,

:07:16.:07:19.

representing Northern Ireland, Joe Fitzpatrick. A unanimous decision

:07:20.:07:25.

for the Belfast lightweight. Dame Mary Peters loudly waving the flag.

:07:26.:07:32.

It was some experience, with the crowd it feels even better. I can't

:07:33.:07:37.

wait until Friday to get a better medal. Onwards and upwards from

:07:38.:07:43.

here, when I was a kid I thought I would be up there, I want to be a

:07:44.:07:50.

gold medallist, not bronze. Next up was Sean Duffy from Armagh. He was

:07:51.:07:57.

also impressive in the light welterweight division. It was

:07:58.:08:03.

another unanimous decision against a Malaysian opponent. Representing

:08:04.:08:11.

Northern Ireland, Sean Duffy. But he is not finished yet. Too tough fight

:08:12.:08:17.

to get here. We are looking beyond the bronze, from the first day we

:08:18.:08:21.

started trading, with all the coaches, bronze was not an option.

:08:22.:08:30.

He is tough, is this canyon. In the light heavyweight class, Sean

:08:31.:08:37.

McGlinchey from Derry made it three out of three. After a bruising

:08:38.:08:42.

encounter, he was awarded every round. Whatever's happened happened

:08:43.:08:51.

and I have shown people all around the place that I am back and I am

:08:52.:08:57.

here to take medals. And on the medal hunt tomorrow,

:08:58.:09:00.

Michael Conlan, Paddy Barnes, Connor Coyle and Steven Donnelly

:09:01.:09:07.

Michaela Walsh and Alanna Audley Murphy.

:09:08.:09:09.

NI shooter David Calvert just missed out on

:09:10.:09:13.

He finished fourth in the full bore rifle.

:09:14.:09:16.

In gymnastics, Nicole Mawhinney impressed the judges today.

:09:17.:09:18.

The Down teenager qualified for the women's all-round individual final.

:09:19.:09:22.

Peter Glass from Newtownards is making his Games debut.

:09:23.:09:29.

Tonight he threw a season's best in the penultimate discipline,

:09:30.:09:31.

the javelin, and will have gained a lot of valuable experience

:09:32.:09:34.

The same goes for 20-year-old Dempsey McGuigan,

:09:35.:09:37.

He contested the final of the hammer tonight, and enjoyed

:09:38.:09:43.

Away from the games, the Northern Ireland Milk Cup youth

:09:44.:09:52.

football tournament saw two of England and Scotland's biggest

:09:53.:09:54.

Liverpool played Rangers at the Showgrounds

:09:55.:10:00.

in the junior section, a game which attracted a big crowd to Ballymena.

:10:01.:10:03.

And it was Rangers who came out on top, thanks to two first-half

:10:04.:10:06.

goals, both scored by the same player, Sam Jamieson

:10:07.:10:09.

A result which will go down well here in Glasgow.

:10:10.:10:21.

I'll be back with lots more tomorrow.

:10:22.:10:24.

Now, with the weather forecast, here's Cecilia Daly.

:10:25.:10:30.

It looks as though most of us will have a fairly dry night but it looks

:10:31.:10:37.

unsettled over the next few days. Most days will bring showers and

:10:38.:10:40.

some could be heavy, especially on Thursday. There will be showers

:10:41.:10:46.

tonight up towards the north coast and the west, otherwise dry and

:10:47.:10:51.

temperatures dropping to 12 and 13 degrees in parts of the south-east.

:10:52.:10:55.

Tomorrow there will be showery rain moving south during the morning,

:10:56.:11:01.

initially in the north and west, some bits could be quite prolonged,

:11:02.:11:06.

editing site towards Belfast and parts of Fermanagh by mid-morning

:11:07.:11:11.

and then continuing south-east. It is a weak weather front which

:11:12.:11:15.

stretches into southern counties of Scotland and will edge into parts of

:11:16.:11:19.

northern England during the day. To the south of it, dry weather with

:11:20.:11:24.

sunshine over central areas of England and Wales, and Southern

:11:25.:11:29.

Ireland seeing pleasant sunshine. It should brighten up over north-east

:11:30.:11:33.

Scotland but in western areas there will be cloud and showers at times.

:11:34.:11:37.

We can expect further showers tomorrow afternoon but there will be

:11:38.:11:42.

more dry than wet weather and sunny glimpses from time to time. Breezy

:11:43.:11:47.

for a while but it will ease as the day goes on and temperatures will be

:11:48.:11:51.

similar to today. Thursday morning has very heavy rain, possibly

:11:52.:11:56.

thunderstorms, but it will become drier later in the day and sunshine

:11:57.:12:00.

and showers continued towards the weekend. That's it for now. Our next

:12:01.:12:10.

bulletin is at 6:25 a.m.. You can follow this programme on

:12:11.:12:11.
