I'll have your weather details shortly. | :00:56. | :01:04.
A big sail boat race in Strangford Lough today turned | :01:05. | :01:07.
into a major emergency incident when a squall hit dinghies | :01:08. | :01:11.
At one stage, reports suggested scores of people were | :01:12. | :01:16.
The event, which involved around 100 14-foot-long dinghies, was taking | :01:17. | :01:23.
place a couple of miles north of Killyleagh, near Taggart Island, | :01:24. | :01:27.
Two helicopters and lifeboats were scrambled to the scene. | :01:28. | :01:33.
Our reporter Eunan McConville is there live with the latest. | :01:34. | :01:46.
This was a GP14 event, a 2-person boat, and about 90 boats were | :01:47. | :01:57.
underwater. The competitors' ages ranged from 16 until 60 and initial | :01:58. | :02:03.
reports came through that as many as 80 people were in the water. That | :02:04. | :02:08.
was not actually the case, they had been hit by bad weather, but those | :02:09. | :02:13.
reports triggered a large-scale rescue operation. It is seven boats | :02:14. | :02:18.
were taking part in this event on Strangford Lough went a squall, bad | :02:19. | :02:26.
weather, came in quickly. Around 20 competitors ended up in the water. | :02:27. | :02:32.
Some of the boats capsized. This is not unusual, crews are trained in | :02:33. | :02:35.
how to write thereabouts, but a further stronger squall registering | :02:36. | :02:41.
37 knots followed the first, capsizing a further number of the | :02:42. | :02:50.
fleet. Coastguards got into action quickly and got onto the scene and | :02:51. | :02:54.
established how many people were in danger and got them safe. Two | :02:55. | :02:58.
helicopters were involved in the rescue operation, as were the | :02:59. | :03:03.
police, Fire Service and ambulance. The Ulster Hospital declared a major | :03:04. | :03:09.
incident but few patients actually needed hospital attention. This was | :03:10. | :03:14.
a large-scale operation that lasted a few hours but it has now been | :03:15. | :03:18.
scaled back. All the people who went in the water have been accounted | :03:19. | :03:22.
scaled back. All the people who went and injuries involved are relatively | :03:23. | :03:25.
taken to hospital, one with a suspected fractured wrist, the other | :03:26. | :03:34.
with knee injury. The accident and emergency department is back to | :03:35. | :03:37.
normal at the Oscar hospital and as you can see, the | :03:38. | :03:40.
normal at the Oscar hospital and as much calmer than it was. It is | :03:41. | :03:44.
obvious things are turning to normal there. It is returning to normal. | :03:45. | :03:53.
One competitor spoke to a colleague and described it as a stir in a | :03:54. | :03:58.
teapot. He said people who take part in these events are used to this | :03:59. | :04:02.
sort of thing, they are trained to get in and out of the boat if it | :04:03. | :04:08.
capsized as. They are wearing and have all the equipment that would | :04:09. | :04:11.
defend them from the cold and that sort of thing, and this event is a | :04:12. | :04:17.
four-day event and racing continues tomorrow morning. Now, it was a | :04:18. | :04:30.
late-night glued to the television screen. | :04:31. | :04:32.
And if you were unable to sit up into the wee small hours, | :04:33. | :04:35.
then you've perhaps missed what Rory McIlroy described | :04:36. | :04:37.
The world number one entered the USPGA as favourite, and once | :04:38. | :04:41.
Rory burst into life in the final nine holes, and in doing so, | :04:42. | :04:46.
It seems that he just cannot stop winning. | :04:47. | :04:56.
This victory wasn't just about talent. | :04:57. | :05:00.
It showcased Rory McIlroy's mental toughness. | :05:01. | :05:07.
Just when it looked like victory was slipping away, like all great | :05:08. | :05:16.
sportsmen, the best player on the planet produced a moment of magic. | :05:17. | :05:27.
It's a magnificent shot, it really is. | :05:28. | :05:30.
The resulting eagle kickstarted Rory's revival. | :05:31. | :05:32.
And when the pressure was really on, he delivered, | :05:33. | :05:36.
There were more yet heroics on the 17th. | :05:37. | :05:56.
Ensuring that he stepped onto the final tee of the final day of the | :05:57. | :06:01.
final major with a two shot lead. As darkness descended on Valhalla, | :06:02. | :06:06.
the brightest star in golf tapped It is glory for a Rory in Kentucky. | :06:07. | :06:20.
Happy being a two-time major champion coming into this year and | :06:21. | :06:24.
all of a sudden I am a fourth time major champion and going for the | :06:25. | :06:29.
career grand slam in 291 days, not that I'm counting, but it has been | :06:30. | :06:36.
an incredible run of golf and I couldn't be more proud of myself or | :06:37. | :06:41.
happier with where my game is at. Even at this early stage of his | :06:42. | :06:46.
career, re-McIlroy is being compared to the greats of the game, and many | :06:47. | :06:50.
of them had been paying tribute to his performance. Greg Norman said on | :06:51. | :06:56.
Twitter out of darkness comes the brightest star in the future of | :06:57. | :07:00.
golf. Congratulations, Rory, you seized the moment in time. And the | :07:01. | :07:07.
most successful of them all, Jack Nicklaus, said Rory might even | :07:08. | :07:15.
overhaul his total of 18 titles, but the current world number one wants | :07:16. | :07:19.
to create his own legacy. I am trying to put all this talk aside | :07:20. | :07:25.
every time it comes up, but Tiger and Jack are the two most successful | :07:26. | :07:31.
players in our sport of all time and I am on a nice track at the moment, | :07:32. | :07:36.
a nice pass, I still have a long way to go, but to be in their company at | :07:37. | :07:38.
this age is very special. Rory will now take | :07:39. | :07:42.
a few well-deserved days off, before the Manchester United fan | :07:43. | :07:44.
will parade his silverware in front of the Old Trafford crowd ahead | :07:45. | :07:46.
of their opening league fixture. Some high praise there are indeed | :07:47. | :07:54.
from some real golfing greats. The County Down man's victories are | :07:55. | :08:00.
having a real spin-off Mervyn Jess' report begins with | :08:01. | :08:02.
the celebrations As darkness descended on Valhalla, | :08:03. | :08:05.
Rory McIlroy lifted his fourth major, illuminated by the | :08:06. | :08:09.
flashlights of the world's media. This morning, just a few hours | :08:10. | :08:11.
after that victory, the Seniors team from his home club, Holywood, | :08:12. | :08:14.
were competing against Dunmurry. Despite this putt, the Holywood men | :08:15. | :08:16.
lost this particular match, but their spirits were still up | :08:17. | :08:19.
after McIlroy's win in Kentucky. He played really well last night. He | :08:20. | :08:31.
has been fantastic for the club because they in a father and son | :08:32. | :08:35.
competition last Tuesday, the juvenile people around Holywood is | :08:36. | :08:39.
unbelievable. He has given great encouragement. | :08:40. | :08:43.
So how is the McIlroy factor affecting tourism | :08:44. | :08:44.
Visiting golfers put more than ?22 million a year | :08:45. | :08:47.
The average spend per day by a golfer is ?385, | :08:48. | :08:51.
As well as the jewels in our crown like County Down, we have a real | :08:52. | :09:04.
breadth in courses of abilities and budgets and there is so much more to | :09:05. | :09:07.
do in Northern Ireland's other than play golf. | :09:08. | :09:09.
At Holywood Golf Club today, some English visitors were preparing | :09:10. | :09:11.
I come golfing to Ireland every year and Northern Ireland doesn't get the | :09:12. | :09:25.
credit it deserves. People like or we are doing a fantastic job. In | :09:26. | :09:31.
three or four years if he keeps going he will be top of the pile. In | :09:32. | :09:36.
the next five years he will be an all-time great. There is no doubt | :09:37. | :09:46.
that Rory McIlroy's success is attracting people, but one coat says | :09:47. | :09:49.
getting people into the game at an early age has been a struggle. There | :09:50. | :09:56.
is financial help there and pros are willing to coach kids and get them | :09:57. | :10:00.
involved in golf and out playing, and just getting them to hit balls, | :10:01. | :10:07.
even in an indoor area, is a start. Their re-McIlroy factor looks set to | :10:08. | :10:14.
continue. I would say next to Bono, re-McIlroy is | :10:15. | :10:17.
continue. I would say next to Bono, successful and well known face. If | :10:18. | :10:24.
you go to the jungle you will find someone there who recognises Rory | :10:25. | :10:25.
McIlroy. This staggering success someone there who recognises Rory | :10:26. | :10:32.
re-McIlroy on the world stage has not just added bonus to his step but | :10:33. | :10:38.
will also come as a massive boost to the game here in Northern Ireland. | :10:39. | :10:51.
Still to come on the programme, after another day of destruction in | :10:52. | :10:56.
the centre of Belfast, one trader says it's time to ban all parades | :10:57. | :10:59.
and protests from the middle of the city. | :11:00. | :11:01.
The Health Minister's told the BBC he can see merit in the idea | :11:02. | :11:04.
of charging people who end up in Accident and Emergency | :11:05. | :11:06.
There has been pressure on services in emergency departments | :11:07. | :11:11.
and a number of deaths have been linked to waiting times. | :11:12. | :11:14.
There has been mixed a reaction to Edwin Poots' comments. | :11:15. | :11:17.
Waiting times are a constant worry and resources are often stretched. | :11:18. | :11:29.
Hours and minutes can mean the difference between successful | :11:30. | :11:31.
Colette's mother died at the Royal Hospital in Belfast | :11:32. | :11:46.
And the trust later admitted that delays at the emergency department | :11:47. | :11:51.
may have contributed to her death and for others. | :11:52. | :11:54.
Even when she was seen after six hours, it was hours after | :11:55. | :11:57.
that before she was scanned and then there were numerous issues. | :11:58. | :11:59.
We often think maybe if we had made more of a noise in A, maybe | :12:00. | :12:03.
And there have been months of problems, | :12:04. | :12:21.
not just here but at A and health trusts across Northern Ireland. | :12:22. | :12:24.
During the busy periods here in the emergency department, | :12:25. | :12:26.
there have been patients lined up and down this room on trolleys, | :12:27. | :12:29.
either waiting for treatment or waiting to be admitted, and that's | :12:30. | :12:31.
New ways of working have been introduced to try to move patients | :12:32. | :12:36.
out of A and into other departments quickly, and 40 extra | :12:37. | :12:38.
I know people have to sit for hours waiting but it's just unfortunate | :12:39. | :12:43.
and I think if there were more finances put in, I think it would be | :12:44. | :12:46.
a better system and maybe get back to the way it was years ago. | :12:47. | :12:50.
The pressure on emergency departments tend to be greatest at | :12:51. | :12:52.
the weekend, when alcohol inevitably contributes to the numbers. | :12:53. | :12:54.
It's led some to call for a debate about charging people | :12:55. | :12:57.
who end up in hospital as a result of their own actions. | :12:58. | :13:01.
We already charge people, insurance companies for example, for | :13:02. | :13:08.
people who have come in as a result of road traffic collisions, etc, so | :13:09. | :13:12.
there is an ability to recoup money from various sources, so it's not | :13:13. | :13:20.
This suggested of making people pay the system. | :13:21. | :13:28.
This suggested of making people pay is controversial but there was some | :13:29. | :13:30.
support for it in Belfast. If you are going in there drunk, | :13:31. | :13:35.
self-inflicted, you could avoid it. I think it's fair enough | :13:36. | :13:37.
because it's not an accident and you're in accident and emergency | :13:38. | :13:40.
taking the time of doctors. I know the service is | :13:41. | :13:43.
in a bad way at the moment, something has to be done, but I | :13:44. | :13:45.
don't know about charging for it. And there are always political | :13:46. | :13:49.
sensitivities when people challenge the principle | :13:50. | :13:50.
of free health care for all. An 18-year-old woman has died | :13:51. | :13:55.
after a collision involving two cars It happened on the Portaferry Road | :13:56. | :13:58.
shortly before 8:30pm. Two other people were taken to | :13:59. | :14:01.
hospital for injuries which aren't Police have asked | :14:02. | :14:04.
for anyone who was travelling on the road around the time | :14:05. | :14:07.
of the collision to contact them. The Environment Minister's given | :14:08. | :14:14.
the thumbs down to a plan to test The announcement came late this | :14:15. | :14:16.
afternoon and our reporter Julian, what else has the Minister | :14:17. | :14:35.
said? Town bored and moved onto this quarry two weeks ago. It wanted to | :14:36. | :14:42.
drill a 750 metre deep borehole to test for shale gas. The process | :14:43. | :14:47.
would not involve fracking and the company believed it could use | :14:48. | :14:52.
permitted development rights but today the environment said the | :14:53. | :14:54.
company must apply for full landing permission. He said he was taking a | :14:55. | :15:00.
precautionary approach and he believed the work being carried out | :15:01. | :15:03.
here could cause significant environmental damage. I have | :15:04. | :15:10.
listened to many people over this past period who have raised numerous | :15:11. | :15:14.
concerns, chiefly around the hydrology in the Fermanagh area, and | :15:15. | :15:20.
that remains a key concern for me. It is one that we have not seen | :15:21. | :15:24.
conclusive evidence there will not be an impact, and in absence of that | :15:25. | :15:29.
evidence I have no option other than to ask for an environmental | :15:30. | :15:36.
statement. Julian, what has the reaction been from locals? | :15:37. | :15:42.
Protesters have maintained a permanent presence here at the | :15:43. | :15:46.
quarry for the last three weeks and tonight they will hold an ecumenical | :15:47. | :15:51.
service. There is a real air of celebration here but testers have | :15:52. | :15:55.
also said their campaign will continue. The Minister has made the | :15:56. | :16:03.
right decision. This is the first time we will have the chance to be | :16:04. | :16:07.
consulted on this. This is something that is of grave concern to the | :16:08. | :16:11.
local community and the fact we have to go through a full planning | :16:12. | :16:14.
process with the environmental impact assessment may delay this up | :16:15. | :16:21.
to a year. What about the company involved? Has it responded to the | :16:22. | :16:26.
Minister's announcement? If it wanted to carry out the work you're | :16:27. | :16:30.
at the quarry it must now apply for full planning permission and carry | :16:31. | :16:35.
out an environmental statement and the community will be involved in | :16:36. | :16:41.
that process. It may also decide to challenge the Minister's physician | :16:42. | :16:45.
in the courts. In a brief statement tonight, the company said it was | :16:46. | :16:49.
deeply concerned at the announcement and said it would be reviewing its | :16:50. | :16:57.
position. Thank you, Julian. Now, under new management but a shock for | :16:58. | :17:00.
within field as the new season gets under way. -- a shock for Linfield. | :17:01. | :17:07.
Trade in Belfast city centre was down 70% yesterday as a result | :17:08. | :17:10.
of disruption caused by a republican anti-internment | :17:11. | :17:11.
One Belfast businessman says it's time to consider banning all marches | :17:12. | :17:16.
and protests from the middle of the city. | :17:17. | :17:19.
It's the not type of footfall city centre shops want. | :17:20. | :17:30.
For the type of traffic. -- or the type of traffic. | :17:31. | :17:36.
Little wonder, then, that so few shoppers stayed | :17:37. | :17:38.
The parade went down Royal Avenue past Castlecourt shopping centre. | :17:39. | :17:41.
The police managed to keep the republican marchers and loyalist | :17:42. | :17:44.
It was over within 15 minutes, but the damage had been done | :17:45. | :17:56.
Businesses in the city are losing money and patience. | :17:57. | :18:04.
This restaurant was surrounded yesterday by police. | :18:05. | :18:08.
The owners used to Twitter to try to let customers know they were still | :18:09. | :18:12.
open in spite of the ring of steel, but it was too late. | :18:13. | :18:20.
Our sales are hard, and the home restaurant is half as well. People | :18:21. | :18:28.
do not come into town when there is that his presence. What is the | :18:29. | :18:35.
solution? I think the answer for me and other traders are, can we not | :18:36. | :18:40.
keep town out of protest parades? Go to Stormont, somewhere else, people | :18:41. | :18:45.
have the right to protest, I am not getting involved in politics, but | :18:46. | :18:52.
town should be a safe haven. Balancing politics and economics in | :18:53. | :18:58.
Belfast is difficult. This was an example of how parades in the city | :18:59. | :19:02.
can hurt trade. Business was done by 70% yesterday on the same week last | :19:03. | :19:07.
year, that is not good and needs to be resolved. We respect the right of | :19:08. | :19:13.
people to rate and protest but the risk and economic impact and people | :19:14. | :19:18.
have to consider this. The policing bill alone run into tens of | :19:19. | :19:22.
thousands of pounds. More than 500 officers were on duty. The bad | :19:23. | :19:27.
weather meant it would never be a bumper day for business, but after | :19:28. | :19:31.
that parade the city centre was virtually deserted. 24 hours later | :19:32. | :19:38.
and Belfast is buzzing again. This city does have remarkable powers of | :19:39. | :19:42.
recovery, but then again it has had plenty of practice over the years. | :19:43. | :19:47.
Now, it was a busy weekend of sport that didn't really end | :19:48. | :19:50.
There were a few bleary eyed sports reporters in the office this | :19:51. | :20:07.
morning. What a payday firm Rory McIlroy and great to see those | :20:08. | :20:12.
celebration shots. Here is a statistic, he is the third youngest | :20:13. | :20:15.
player behind Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to win or majors. There was | :20:16. | :20:21.
also great company at Croke Park at the weekend. | :20:22. | :20:23.
Three Ulster teams travelled to Croke Park at the weekend, but only | :20:24. | :20:26.
one remains in the All-Ireland Championship, and that's Donegal. | :20:27. | :20:29.
Their manager Jim McGuinness will now attempt what many are calling | :20:30. | :20:31.
Mission Impossible, as Donegal take on Dublin for | :20:32. | :20:33.
If Jim McGuinness was to leave Donegal to a third semifinal | :20:34. | :20:42.
appearance in four years and his captain in top form. The Ulster | :20:43. | :20:47.
champions were favourites and got off to a perfect start. However, | :20:48. | :20:54.
there is a grit and determination about our | :20:55. | :20:56.
there is a grit and determination relegation to division three. Just | :20:57. | :21:01.
ask the Donegal team doctor. With eight minutes remaining, the | :21:02. | :21:02.
unthinkable looked very eight minutes remaining, the | :21:03. | :21:06.
Armagh took the lead. However, eight minutes remaining, the | :21:07. | :21:10.
Donegal need their leader, he usually provides, and did so with | :21:11. | :21:14.
the equalising point. One minute later, Patrick McBratney hit the | :21:15. | :21:20.
winner. There was time for some late drama. Tony Kernan had a great | :21:21. | :21:26.
afternoon but did this to go over. It drops short and Armagh were out | :21:27. | :21:31.
of the championship, but will their manager be in charge next season? It | :21:32. | :21:39.
is time to go behind the scenes and talk to the managing team and come | :21:40. | :21:43.
to some resolution, but the most important thing is the progress in | :21:44. | :21:45.
this team and that will important thing is the progress in | :21:46. | :21:50.
no matter who is in charge. Monaghan had the task of taking on the | :21:51. | :21:53.
defending champions in their backyard, and for 25 minutes Dublin | :21:54. | :21:59.
looked rattled. But only for 25 minutes. Two goals in three minutes | :22:00. | :22:04.
meant the game was effectively over at half-time, as Dublin cruised into | :22:05. | :22:09.
the last four with 15 points to spare. The Monaghan manager is | :22:10. | :22:14.
hopeful of remaining in charge in 2015. Obviously people in accounting | :22:15. | :22:21.
make that decision but the process remained and the efforts they showed | :22:22. | :22:28.
will not be affected. Dublin looked unbeatable but the risk at least one | :22:29. | :22:28.
man who believes they very much are. Now, it was the opening weekend | :22:29. | :22:34.
of the Irish League. Champions Cliftonville drew with | :22:35. | :22:36.
Glentoran, but already a little bit of pressure | :22:37. | :22:38.
on this man, new Linfield manager Warren Feeney, after | :22:39. | :22:41.
his side lost 3-0 to Portadown. He won 46 caps for his country and | :22:42. | :22:52.
now has to win the hearts and minds of Linfield supporters. A task which | :22:53. | :22:57.
was easier said than done, as was done cruised past the 51 time league | :22:58. | :23:04.
champions by two goals to nil. He has 35 left in the game of 37 and | :23:05. | :23:11.
that is the only lesson, that is the first game, and they have to realise | :23:12. | :23:17.
it is the real world. Two special guests of honour, Paddy Barnes and | :23:18. | :23:22.
Michael Conlan. There were more medals than goals on offer as the | :23:23. | :23:27.
league champions drew nil-nil with Glentoran. In Lurgan last season 's | :23:28. | :23:37.
Irish cup winners the Navan drew two to with fellow title contenders | :23:38. | :23:42.
Crusaders -- Glenavon. New boys Institute started with a 2-2 draw at | :23:43. | :23:49.
Dungannon. Stephen Flynn's injury time equaliser rescued the side. | :23:50. | :23:55.
Jason McCartney opened his account for a Ballinamallard against | :23:56. | :24:00.
Coleraine, and David McDaid found the net against the ban ciders. | :24:01. | :24:07.
Goals from Ballymena United gave them a winning start against | :24:08. | :24:10.
Warrenpoint as Irish League season got up and running. | :24:11. | :24:14.
Ireland have reached the semifinals of the Women's Rugby World Cup | :24:15. | :24:17.
for the first time by beating Kazakhstan 40-5 in their final Pool | :24:18. | :24:19.
Having followed up an opening win over the USA with a | :24:20. | :24:23.
stunning victory over champions New Zealand, the Irish knew a last-four | :24:24. | :24:26.
They led 14-5 at half-time and added four more tries after the break. | :24:27. | :24:38.
Finally, motorcycling, and Alastair Seeley moved back | :24:39. | :24:40.
into British Supersport title contention by winning yesterday's | :24:41. | :24:43.
It was a Northern Ireland one-two as fellow Carrickfergus rider | :24:44. | :24:48.
That's the sport. Thank you, Thomas. Lots of showers around today. If you | :24:49. | :25:04.
are unlucky enough to catch one, you will be pretty wet. We have what is | :25:05. | :25:10.
left of arcane burst that controlling our weather and some | :25:11. | :25:14.
squally conditions as you saw earlier -- retain Bertha. Squally | :25:15. | :25:20.
showers pushing across the island. This evening there will be a | :25:21. | :25:24.
continuing flow of showers, some heavy, but overnight some will die | :25:25. | :25:29.
away. Temperatures will dip to 10 degrees, the skies tomorrow will | :25:30. | :25:34.
give us a bright start in places but like today we will continue to see | :25:35. | :25:39.
gusty winds and scattered showers, especially in the afternoon. To | :25:40. | :25:44.
begin with many of us start on a dry and bright note but by afternoon | :25:45. | :25:48.
jobbers will come in, especially for the north coast but some will drift | :25:49. | :25:53.
further south, some heavy and donned array, and it will feel fresher with | :25:54. | :25:58.
those westerly winds and temperatures managing just 15 or 16 | :25:59. | :26:02.
degrees but with any showers it will feel cooler. There will be good | :26:03. | :26:07.
spells of sunshine to look forward to so it will not rain of the time, | :26:08. | :26:12.
and for many of us tomorrow evening will not be a bad end to the day. | :26:13. | :26:17.
Tomorrow night a few showers come and go, some cloud around so a mild | :26:18. | :26:20.
night, temperatures around 13 degrees. For Wednesday it is like | :26:21. | :26:27.
Groundhog Day, north-westerly winds will still be there, a scattering of | :26:28. | :26:32.
showers, but there will also be some bright and sunny spells so it will | :26:33. | :26:36.
not rain all the time. It looks like temperatures will pick up a little | :26:37. | :26:40.
bit, but further south you are you may get 18 or 19, but with the winds | :26:41. | :26:45.
it will stay fresh around the North coast, today, tomorrow and | :26:46. | :26:49.
Wednesday, scattered showers, lost three conditions. It looks like we | :26:50. | :26:54.
will end their week on a better note, drier and brighter on Thursday | :26:55. | :26:59.
and Friday. Not dry all the time, some showers in the forecast, but it | :27:00. | :27:04.
looks like an improving picture. We will keep you up to date. Follow us | :27:05. | :27:10.
on Twitter if you can. That is good to hear. Thank you for that. Now a | :27:11. | :27:13.
reminder of the top stories. A major rescue operation as a sudden | :27:14. | :27:20.
squall hit an international sailing event on Strangford Lough. I will | :27:21. | :27:23.
have the latest. At one point several people ended up | :27:24. | :27:31.
in the water. No one was seriously injured. The Environment Minister | :27:32. | :27:37.
has refused permission to test for shale gas in Fermanagh. Local people | :27:38. | :27:44.
say it is a relief. The company will appeal the decision. | :27:45. | :27:47. |
