Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline... | :00:00. | :00:16.
Good news stories on the economic front - | :00:17. | :00:18.
the seats are waiting to be filled as 140 new jobs are announced | :00:19. | :00:21.
and ?14 million is set to turn this area into a massive new film space. | :00:22. | :00:29.
No end to the fracking row as the DUP accuses the | :00:30. | :00:37.
Environment Minister of wrecking a huge investment opportunity. | :00:38. | :00:45.
It informs companies who want to investigate the possibility of shale | :00:46. | :00:51.
gas that we are not open for business. | :00:52. | :00:52.
It's all plain sailing in Strangford Lough after yesterday's | :00:53. | :00:55.
drama, when a sudden squall hit a world Championship event. | :00:56. | :00:58.
And it's deja vu as we can expect another day with | :00:59. | :01:01.
The energy firm SSE Airtricity is creating 143 new jobs in Belfast | :01:02. | :01:15.
with an expansion of its customer services centre. | :01:16. | :01:23.
There was a danger that all the Belfast jobs could have been | :01:24. | :01:26.
With the details, here's our economics | :01:27. | :01:28.
SSE's businesses include wind farms, gas and electricity supply. | :01:29. | :01:35.
It currently has 98 customer service staff, | :01:36. | :01:37.
It is going to consolidate into one office in the city centre | :01:38. | :01:43.
The expansion is being supported with Invest NI grants | :01:44. | :01:47.
As in a lot of cases, we do compete internationally. | :01:48. | :01:57.
In this case, it was a project that could have | :01:58. | :01:59.
We are delighted that not only have we secured 90 jobs, but | :02:00. | :02:04.
developing a centre of excellence here that will employ 250 people. | :02:05. | :02:12.
It was hard fought and we are delighted to see it. | :02:13. | :02:15.
The managing director says the quality | :02:16. | :02:17.
It is important to stabilise roles for the future. | :02:18. | :02:26.
The announcement today is for an additional 143. | :02:27. | :02:29.
We can attract and employ great people. | :02:30. | :02:33.
There are really talented people in Northern Ireland. | :02:34. | :02:39.
New rules limiting grant aid for job creation have now been | :02:40. | :02:41.
The Enterprise says that means being more creative when comes | :02:42. | :02:45.
We have to look for new inward investors and look at different ways | :02:46. | :02:56.
of helping companies invest in Northern Ireland whether it is | :02:57. | :03:03.
through skills development or three research and development. We should | :03:04. | :03:06.
increase the spend on research and development because it leads to new | :03:07. | :03:10.
products and processes and that leads to more jobs in the future. | :03:11. | :03:20.
With the economy here and elsewhere still showing signs of | :03:21. | :03:22.
recovery, there could be more good news on the jobs front | :03:23. | :03:25.
The film industry has had another boost and it's centred | :03:26. | :03:29.
Planning permission has been granted for two new film studios | :03:30. | :03:33.
Our arts correspondent Maggie Taggart joins us from there. | :03:34. | :03:44.
Obviously, great news for the film industry. What more do we know about | :03:45. | :03:49.
the development? The development has cost ?14 | :03:50. | :03:55.
million. It will be just down this road past the current Titanic | :03:56. | :03:58.
studios. They have been waiting for this planning permission for eight | :03:59. | :04:01.
months. Although the granting of it was never really in doubt, the news | :04:02. | :04:06.
that it has been rubber-stamped will be a great relief and delight for | :04:07. | :04:09.
the developers and film and television industry. The paint all | :04:10. | :04:17.
studios in Belfast, -- PaperPort studios in Belfast were former | :04:18. | :04:24.
painting studios in Harland Wolff. In recent years they have | :04:25. | :04:27.
been expanded, upgraded and soundproofed and are used almost | :04:28. | :04:31.
exclusively by international shows. It is now called Titanic Studios. A | :04:32. | :04:41.
medieval fantasy was filmed there in 2009 and later the hit TV series, | :04:42. | :04:48.
Game Of Thrones. A bid to build two new studios has been approved by the | :04:49. | :04:53.
Environment Minister, Mark Birkin. The project will consist of two | :04:54. | :04:58.
studios and production workshops bringing an extra 100,000 square | :04:59. | :05:02.
feet of facilities. That is a doubling of the existing film-making | :05:03. | :05:09.
facilities in the area. The HBO series Game Of Thrones is likely to | :05:10. | :05:14.
want to use this space as it has become the centre point of | :05:15. | :05:17.
international filming in Northern Ireland. It highlights Northern | :05:18. | :05:21.
Ireland landscapes and last week the team went to film on the beach at | :05:22. | :05:27.
Portstewart. In June, the Titanic Studios had a visit from the Queen, | :05:28. | :05:32.
who toured the facility as part of her is to Northern Ireland. She met | :05:33. | :05:34.
actors and studio staff and saw all of the familiar sets of the hit | :05:35. | :05:40.
series. Do we know where the money for the | :05:41. | :05:44.
new studios is coming from? We are not quite sure. It is ?14 | :05:45. | :05:49.
million and it is a company that wants to start. We have heard that | :05:50. | :06:01.
DETI said it was expecting to make an announcement so we can take that | :06:02. | :06:05.
as a hint they will contribute something. | :06:06. | :06:09.
This is evidence of a long-term commitment to the film industry? | :06:10. | :06:15.
Northern Ireland Screen said there was the need for more film industry | :06:16. | :06:19.
infrastructure and they said they wanted to show the world that | :06:20. | :06:23.
Belfast was up to supporting a global industry, which it is already | :06:24. | :06:26.
at the moment. People are leaving work from the Game Of Thrones | :06:27. | :06:31.
industry, where they are filming over there. A lot of work is going | :06:32. | :06:35.
on in Northern Ireland and this can only be a boost. ?14 million may | :06:36. | :06:44.
seem a lot of money but to build two studios with the associated parking | :06:45. | :06:49.
and workshops, it is a great boost for the industry. | :06:50. | :06:52.
Do we know when the studios are likely to be built? | :06:53. | :06:57.
They have been waiting for this and hoping for the planning permission | :06:58. | :07:01.
and they have finally got that, so I am told they hope to be on the site | :07:02. | :07:05.
as soon as possible and they hope to have it completed next year, 2015, | :07:06. | :07:08.
and they are ready for business. Thank you. | :07:09. | :07:13.
Is there a staffing crisis in the Catholic church? | :07:14. | :07:15.
We hear the warning that the service can't be the same as in the past. | :07:16. | :07:26.
The DUP has accused the Environment Minister of letting | :07:27. | :07:28.
his prejudices stand in the way of hundreds of millions of pounds | :07:29. | :07:31.
It followed the decision by the SDLP's Mark H Durkan to block | :07:32. | :07:36.
plans for exploratory drilling for gas in Fermanagh. | :07:37. | :07:40.
The DUP's Sammy Wilson has criticised that decision claiming | :07:41. | :07:42.
Our political editor Mark Devenport reports. | :07:43. | :07:59.
Mark Durkan's position to block exploratory drilling in County | :08:00. | :08:05.
Fermanagh was music to the ears of those attending an ecumenical | :08:06. | :08:07.
service at the gates of the quarry last night. We are delighted. We | :08:08. | :08:13.
know it is a small step but it shows that people are being heard and that | :08:14. | :08:19.
the planning laws are being upheld. Absolute overwhelming relief. I was | :08:20. | :08:22.
in tears for a good hour with pure emotional release. Thank you, Mr | :08:23. | :08:25.
Durcan. But a former | :08:26. | :08:32.
DUP Environment Minister accused his successor of putting his | :08:33. | :08:33.
prejudices ahead of economic logic. We will lose thousands of jobs, | :08:34. | :08:42.
economic investment, and a secure source of local energy which in any | :08:43. | :08:46.
other sensible administration we would be tapping into. | :08:47. | :08:48.
As some campaigners scaled down their protest camp, Sinn Fein | :08:49. | :08:50.
We are right to take a precautionary approach. The gas is not going | :08:51. | :08:59.
anywhere. We should not rush into these things. We need to be careful. | :09:00. | :09:03.
If damage is done it might not be possible to rectify it. | :09:04. | :09:05.
a University of Ulster energy expert says special regulations | :09:06. | :09:08.
would have to be introduced to ensure the local economy benefits. | :09:09. | :09:14.
Fracking is potentially an answer, but what is lacking is really strong | :09:15. | :09:23.
leadership and legislation to ensure that any exploitation benefits | :09:24. | :09:28.
Northern Ireland plc and not just some companies who can come in and | :09:29. | :09:34.
exploit, pays licence fees, and then leave. Northern Ireland's dependence | :09:35. | :09:40.
on imported energy may make the prospect of developing an indigenous | :09:41. | :09:43.
source of power highly attractive but the concerned about fracking | :09:44. | :09:46.
meanie politicians will argue this one out for many months, if not | :09:47. | :09:53.
years to come. -- the concerns about fracking mean that politicians. | :09:54. | :09:56.
A man and a child have escaped injury in a gun | :09:57. | :09:58.
Two shots were fired at the front door of the house on Westland Way | :09:59. | :10:04.
The police are investigating a motive for the attack. | :10:05. | :10:10.
I was disgusted to hear this had happened in north Belfast. There is | :10:11. | :10:15.
no justification. To think there was a child in this home, summary could | :10:16. | :10:19.
have been injured or killed. We are trying to create a more peaceful | :10:20. | :10:23.
Northern Ireland, not where a child is afraid in their own home. | :10:24. | :10:28.
Queen's University in Belfast has been accused of unfair dismissal | :10:29. | :10:30.
and breach of contract by a former professor of dentistry. | :10:31. | :10:32.
Professor Philip Lamey, who was employed by both the Belfast | :10:33. | :10:35.
Health Trust and the university, is accusing his former employer | :10:36. | :10:37.
of failing to give him adequate notice or paying his full salary. | :10:38. | :10:40.
He claims he's owed unpaid salary and is entitled to damages. | :10:41. | :10:43.
The tribunal's findings will be delivered next week. | :10:44. | :10:49.
Well, it's meant to be the beautiful game, but stray footballs have left | :10:50. | :10:52.
the Guildhall in Londonderry with an ugly bill to fix smashed windows. | :10:53. | :10:56.
Over the summer, Derry City Council has spent | :10:57. | :10:58.
thousands of pounds repairing damage caused | :10:59. | :11:01.
by children having a kick about in the recently renovated square. | :11:02. | :11:05.
Now the police have stepped in to show young people playing ball | :11:06. | :11:07.
It's a large open space - perfect for a quick game of football. | :11:08. | :11:18.
But last week, a third window in the Guildhall was broken. | :11:19. | :11:26.
It's believed the damage was caused accidentally | :11:27. | :11:27.
by children playing ball outside - but it's left the council facing | :11:28. | :11:30.
a repair bill of over ?10,000. | :11:31. | :11:32.
So the police have come up with this... | :11:33. | :11:39.
We have got this caged football setup. It is in response to a number | :11:40. | :11:46.
of damages which have occurred in the Guildhall behind us. We are just | :11:47. | :11:50.
here to have a bit of fun, get in football enthusiasts and get them | :11:51. | :11:55.
some guidance as to where is the best place to play football. A | :11:56. | :12:00.
section of the square has been transformed into a caged football | :12:01. | :12:04.
arena. It is safe for players and safe for windows. | :12:05. | :12:06.
The event's called It's Not How You Kick It, It's Where You Kick. | :12:07. | :12:09.
It's hoped it will encourage young people to find more suitable places | :12:10. | :12:12.
Open green areas, away from Windows, away from property like cars and | :12:13. | :12:21.
houses and stuff like that. That is the message we are trying to get | :12:22. | :12:24.
across. Hopefully we will have fun in the process. | :12:25. | :12:25.
Parents say it's an initiative that could be used by community groups. | :12:26. | :12:30.
We need to look at local communities and see where kids can play and | :12:31. | :12:40.
where they venture. In football, accidents do happen and it costs | :12:41. | :12:41.
money to repair damage. Plenty of fancy footwork on show - | :12:42. | :12:43.
but this time without the Guildhall Still to come... | :12:44. | :13:00.
Sailing conditions near perfect on Strangford Lough today after | :13:01. | :13:03.
yesterday's emergency. We will bring you the latest. | :13:04. | :13:08.
The Bishop of Derry Dr Donal McKeown has warned Catholics that they will | :13:09. | :13:11.
not be able to depend on the same service they received | :13:12. | :13:14.
from the Church in the past because of a shortage of priests. | :13:15. | :13:17.
Many commentators believe there's a crisis in the Church which the | :13:18. | :13:19.
In this special report, our North West reporter Keiron Tourish has | :13:20. | :13:26.
for months been following a local priest in Derry as he went about | :13:27. | :13:29.
his daily duties including visiting the sick and preparing children | :13:30. | :13:32.
How are you keeping? Not too bad. You are looking well. Father Chris | :13:33. | :13:49.
Ferguson is a priest in the Derry diocese. He is one of four it's with | :13:50. | :13:54.
a congregation of 17,000 people in the Waterside area of the city. -- | :13:55. | :14:04.
he is one of four sure its. His visits are a source of inspiration. | :14:05. | :14:09.
I cannot go to the chapel any more. I miss going so much and this is the | :14:10. | :14:25.
nearest I have to it. But there is a potential crisis looming in the | :14:26. | :14:28.
Catholic church as more and more priests are retiring, and there is | :14:29. | :14:33.
only a small number of new recruits coming through. It means the | :14:34. | :14:41.
workload can literally be 24/7. Yellow like you have daily rides | :14:42. | :14:46.
hospital and your parish. -- you have daily rounds in the hospital | :14:47. | :14:50.
and your parish. You have first Communion. Then you have baptisms, | :14:51. | :14:56.
weddings, you have funerals as well. And of course, those who have | :14:57. | :15:02.
recently lost a family member. It is varied and it is unpredictable. It | :15:03. | :15:05.
is a great challenge and it is enjoyable. In more recent years | :15:06. | :15:15.
there has been more to do. The Catholic church has been at the | :15:16. | :15:19.
centre of many scandals in recent decades. A litany of sex abuse cases | :15:20. | :15:25.
have badly damaged the institution. The ban on priests getting married | :15:26. | :15:30.
and the fact that they must embrace a vow of celibacy has, it has been | :15:31. | :15:35.
argued, had many young men off following a vocation in the | :15:36. | :15:39.
priesthood. Is there a crisis? I think there is a huge change coming | :15:40. | :15:47.
on in high we have the church. Whether it is a crisis or an | :15:48. | :15:50.
opportunity is up to people of faith to decide. We cannot replicate what | :15:51. | :15:57.
we had in the past. We can replicate what we did in a different cultural | :15:58. | :16:02.
environment with loads of clergy, with Ireland exporting clergy. How | :16:03. | :16:10.
do we cope in the new environment? One former priest who takes a keen | :16:11. | :16:14.
interest in church affairs says the Vatican must take a fundamental that | :16:15. | :16:18.
at itself and acknowledge the crisis. The people are still leaving | :16:19. | :16:22.
in the past of the glorious church which was an institution. I am not | :16:23. | :16:26.
talking about faith but the institution which over exaggerated | :16:27. | :16:29.
its own importance which was badly governed, and which had many flaws | :16:30. | :16:33.
and sins within it. That came collapsing down. There has been a | :16:34. | :16:39.
lack of acknowledgement that that is as deep as it is and therefore there | :16:40. | :16:43.
is very little effort, apart from the new Pope, to acknowledge the | :16:44. | :16:50.
depth of the crisis and respond in a fashion which is appropriate and | :16:51. | :16:54.
pertinent to the depth and breadth of the crisis. So, the challenges | :16:55. | :16:59.
facing the Catholic Church remained and dealing with the problem of | :17:00. | :17:03.
fewer priests in the future to look after the day-to-day running of the | :17:04. | :17:07.
institution may well require radical thinking. But is the church for that | :17:08. | :17:09.
challenge? Sport now, and Mark Sidebottom is | :17:10. | :17:14.
in Killyleagh for us tonight. The sailing continued as planned | :17:15. | :17:17.
today after yesterday's drama? Yes, all of the drama yesterday has | :17:18. | :17:34.
simply drifted away on the tide. Earlier today, 100 boats, 200 | :17:35. | :17:38.
competitors from a dozen countries, got back in action. These little | :17:39. | :17:44.
things, 14 feet long, retail at about ?15,000 so there was ?1.5 | :17:45. | :17:49.
million worth of equipment out there today. We spent the afternoon with | :17:50. | :17:52.
them on the water. Add on the water today, where sea | :17:53. | :17:58.
and land and sky converged, the sailing boats made a rainbow on the | :17:59. | :18:03.
horizon. In contrast, yesterday was a different story. Two scores, | :18:04. | :18:09.
across the ceiling area. The first was measured at 31 knots and | :18:10. | :18:15.
capsized a few boats, which is not unusual for the class. The boats | :18:16. | :18:22.
capsized and the crew know how to set them right. They were well | :18:23. | :18:26.
covered for safety. Was there any warning it was closing in to | :18:27. | :18:30.
quickly? Not particularly. It had not been forecast. This is the | :18:31. | :18:35.
precise location where the squall setting very quickly. There was a | :18:36. | :18:38.
second one which came in quickly and that caused the issue. By contrast | :18:39. | :18:42.
today, conditions, organisers say, are perfect. In total, 95 boats | :18:43. | :18:54.
competed today. They raced around a triangle course. Or run the prizes, | :18:55. | :18:59.
flights and accommodation to the next DUP 14 World Championship in | :19:00. | :19:06.
Barbados. -- GP 14. Among it all, this team were top dog. It feels | :19:07. | :19:12.
brilliant. Fantastic. It is the first time we have won a World | :19:13. | :19:14.
Championship race and it feels brilliant. Did you avoid going in | :19:15. | :19:22.
yesterday? Unfortunately not, no. We capsized on the way to the start | :19:23. | :19:30.
line. Can use the event of? Fantastic, lovely. Love it. | :19:31. | :19:36.
Yesterday the emergency services line the jetty. This afternoon, it | :19:37. | :19:47.
was very much back to normal. Now, another man who took a dip | :19:48. | :19:53.
yesterday. This is Bruce field who was born and grew up in Rhodesia. | :19:54. | :19:59.
You have come from Australia and you have competed in two World | :20:00. | :20:02.
Championships. I suspect that Strangford will eclipse both Sri | :20:03. | :20:11.
Lanka and Cornwall? Or places have a days and yesterday was hopefully the | :20:12. | :20:17.
worst. I am looking forward to the rest. You were back on the water | :20:18. | :20:22.
today. You can take a look at it. Yesterday you did have to be | :20:23. | :20:27.
rescued. Tell me how dangerous you felt things were? It was not | :20:28. | :20:30.
dangerous as such because there were rescue boats around. The rescue | :20:31. | :20:39.
boats were always there so you knew you were going to be looked after. | :20:40. | :20:48.
There was a chaotic set up going on with over a dozen boats on the water | :20:49. | :20:54.
at the same time and it was stretching the resources of the | :20:55. | :20:58.
local emergency boats. Part of our training is to learn how to fix a | :20:59. | :21:06.
capsized. Did the speed of the emergency response surprise you? | :21:07. | :21:12.
Over the top. We could not understand what was going on. We | :21:13. | :21:15.
thought it was part of the event and all of sudden the flashing lights | :21:16. | :21:20.
were there and the coastguard and everything else. We were a bit | :21:21. | :21:27.
overawed with what happened but I am also very impressed with the way the | :21:28. | :21:31.
response happened. If there had been serious injuries there would have | :21:32. | :21:40.
been worse but my hats off to them, they did a good job. Has it been | :21:41. | :21:47.
worth coming? It is worthwhile. We do it because we are passionate | :21:48. | :21:52.
about the sport. It is also for the camaraderie. There's not much | :21:53. | :21:57.
winning. -- it is not so much about winning. I know it is time you to | :21:58. | :22:03.
go. I appreciate you joining us. He took a dip yesterday but has | :22:04. | :22:07.
survived to tell the tale, as they did all. | :22:08. | :22:18.
Cliftonville have replaced Liam Boyce with David McDaid from | :22:19. | :22:24.
Coleraine. He has joined the Reds for three years. He scored four | :22:25. | :22:28.
Coleraine on the first day out of the new league. He has signed for | :22:29. | :22:33.
Cliftonville. He is from the Republic of Ireland under 19 squad | :22:34. | :22:35.
and will play tomorrow night for the red against Portadown. -- the Reds. | :22:36. | :22:53.
Alan's women play England in France tomorrow. Can they do it? | :22:54. | :22:58.
This game had to be moved to a bigger stadium given demand for | :22:59. | :23:05.
tickets. The Irish squad are relishing the opportunity to | :23:06. | :23:07.
showcase their talents on the big stage. I personally love playing big | :23:08. | :23:13.
games, in big stadiums. It motivates me. I love those games. I think most | :23:14. | :23:18.
of the team will be the same and they will really enjoy it. The last | :23:19. | :23:25.
time the two sides met in the Six Nations, World Cup favourites | :23:26. | :23:29.
England came out on top. We were not happy with our performance at | :23:30. | :23:32.
Twickenham. I know it was only 17-10 but there were errors we were not | :23:33. | :23:36.
happy with. We lapse in concentration. That is something we | :23:37. | :23:41.
have been working on. They have come up trumps in the past but we are | :23:42. | :23:44.
looking to set that right. Confidence should not be an issue | :23:45. | :23:48.
after their historic victory over New Zealand. I think it shows that | :23:49. | :23:57.
we are intelligent rugby players and we can adapt to any game and I think | :23:58. | :24:01.
that by speeding New Zealand it shows that we can take it to the | :24:02. | :24:05.
next level. England are a fantastic side. Paris was the venue where the | :24:06. | :24:12.
men lifted their Six Nations crown in March. It has been the Irish | :24:13. | :24:17.
women's side's most successful World Cup ever. Tomorrow would give them | :24:18. | :24:23.
the opportunity of silverware on a global scale. | :24:24. | :24:30.
Already I feel like a salty old sea dog! Back to the studio... | :24:31. | :24:36.
Let's find out what the weather has in store. | :24:37. | :24:41.
I wish I could tell you we have a settled spell in the forecast but we | :24:42. | :24:45.
do not. It stays and settled for the rest of the week. This was the | :24:46. | :24:51.
picture a short time ago. The rain moving south and east. It is | :24:52. | :24:54.
clearing nicely with dry conditions. There will be scattered showers and | :24:55. | :24:59.
through the night, a band of rain sinking southwards from the north | :25:00. | :25:04.
coast. It will be aimed my night with temperatures of 12 or 13. -- it | :25:05. | :25:10.
will be a mild night. Not great news if you were hoping to catch sight of | :25:11. | :25:14.
the proceeds meeting shower or the International 's base station -- | :25:15. | :25:20.
International Space Station but hopefully you will see something. | :25:21. | :25:24.
Deja vu tomorrow, scattered showers but not all the time. Plenty of dry | :25:25. | :25:29.
and bright weather as well. One or two showers clearing away to begin | :25:30. | :25:32.
with and then the band of showers pushing in from the West. It will | :25:33. | :25:36.
clear eastwards eventually but not until around lunch time so about | :25:37. | :25:40.
tomorrow you could see some showers along and, Belfast and County Down | :25:41. | :25:44.
in the afternoon. Further west, drier and brighter with half decent | :25:45. | :25:49.
spells of sunshine the cards. 1780 degrees. The north-westerly winds | :25:50. | :25:55.
will keep it feeling fresh and autumnal, especially towards the | :25:56. | :25:59.
north Coast. Tomorrow we have Harry came Bertha sitting to the North | :26:00. | :26:05.
East of Scotland, keeping it windy. -- Harry came Bertha. Temperatures | :26:06. | :26:12.
should reach 22 degrees London. Across Ireland plenty of dry and | :26:13. | :26:17.
bright weather on the cards but again with breezes coming in from | :26:18. | :26:20.
the north-west. There will be one or two showers in the forecast. | :26:21. | :26:25.
Tomorrow evening, plenty of spells of sunshine taking us to the end of | :26:26. | :26:29.
the day but a handful of light showers will remain. They will stay | :26:30. | :26:33.
with us overnight into Thursday. A cooler night in the countryside with | :26:34. | :26:38.
temperatures in single figures. Towns and cities sit stay at about | :26:39. | :26:43.
ten or 12 degrees. Thursday, scattered showers. This time one or | :26:44. | :26:48.
two will be slow moving. If you catch those you will know about it. | :26:49. | :26:55.
Dry weather also developing, especially in the West, with bright | :26:56. | :26:59.
and sunny weather. Friday shaping up to be not too bad. Similar for | :27:00. | :27:03.
Saturday but we also weighs -- with half the risk of showers in the | :27:04. | :27:10.
forecast. Thank you. Good evening. | :27:11. | :27:24.
