Here on BBC One it's time for the news where you are.

:00:00.:00:00.

Hundreds of people have attended a vigil outside the home

:00:00.:00:09.

of Christopher Meli, the 20-year-old man

:00:10.:00:12.

from West Belfast who was murdered at the weekend.

:00:13.:00:15.

The young father was attacked by a gang of between 15 and 20

:00:16.:00:18.

youths in Twinbrook as he walked to a shop while visiting friends.

:00:19.:00:25.

Five teenagers were being questioned by the police tonight as people

:00:26.:00:28.

gathered in support of his family in the Springfield Road area.

:00:29.:00:32.

A family's grief laid bare outside their home.

:00:33.:00:41.

At times tonight, Christopher's brothers were overcome with sorrow.

:00:42.:00:44.

His parents struggling to understand their loss.

:00:45.:00:47.

Several hundred people came to the street

:00:48.:00:49.

Prayers and offerings of hope for a family dealing

:00:50.:00:53.

with devastation since the moment they learned

:00:54.:00:55.

They asked if we had a picture of Christopher.

:00:56.:01:01.

She looked at the picture and she hugged me and said

:01:02.:01:07.

And, in the time since that moment, this family has been

:01:08.:01:15.

Was he kicked around the place like a rag doll?

:01:16.:01:22.

I reckon Christopher died a very violent death.

:01:23.:01:24.

he was calling me, I believe he was calling me or both of us.

:01:25.:01:32.

Christopher was training to become and engineer,

:01:33.:01:33.

learning to drive, dreaming of a future.

:01:34.:01:37.

He couldn't wait to get that wee car on the road to go to work.

:01:38.:01:41.

He begged me, mummy, will you get me the insurance

:01:42.:01:47.

for Christmas, that's what he wanted.

:01:48.:01:50.

That's what he wanted, when he passed his test, and now...

:01:51.:01:59.

The police say Christopher died after a vicious

:02:00.:02:02.

They also say he was attacked by a number of people in need big group.

:02:03.:02:18.

-- in a big group. Some of the people in that group may not have

:02:19.:02:23.

been involved in the attack or anticipated the outcome of the

:02:24.:02:27.

attack. We are working to establish what happened and who was involved.

:02:28.:02:32.

It is only a matter of time for we identify everyone who was there and

:02:33.:02:36.

I am appealing for those people to come forward now and tell police

:02:37.:02:42.

what they saw. Come to us before we come to you, is the message for

:02:43.:02:43.

them. And among the hundreds who came

:02:44.:02:47.

to the vigil tonight, Christopher's friends remembering

:02:48.:02:49.

a proud young father. He always brought his child into the

:02:50.:02:58.

conversation, he was the main interest. The day he was born I

:02:59.:03:03.

remember Christopher standing proud as punch.

:03:04.:03:04.

Tonight, the community of West Belfast gave support

:03:05.:03:06.

to the family, and the family of Christopher Meli gave support

:03:07.:03:09.

A man's been in court charged with killing his mother.

:03:10.:03:13.

Lija Aroustamova was found dead in Portavogie at the weekend.

:03:14.:03:18.

The woman's body was found at this semidetached house

:03:19.:03:24.

in the County Down fishing village of Portavogie in the early hours

:03:25.:03:27.

She was 52-year-old Lija Aroustamova, who was originally

:03:28.:03:30.

from Latvia and was understood to have lived and worked in the area

:03:31.:03:34.

Today her 25-year-old son, Viktors Arustamovs, appeared

:03:35.:03:38.

in Downpatrick Magistrates' Court charged with her murder.

:03:39.:03:43.

He too is from Lativa but has no fixed abode.

:03:44.:03:46.

Viktors Arustamovs appeared in court dressed in

:03:47.:03:49.

As he stood in the dock, an interpreter explained

:03:50.:03:54.

the court proceedings and questions in Russian.

:03:55.:03:57.

He replied in English, giving his date of birth and saying

:03:58.:03:59.

A police officer told the court he believed he could connect

:04:00.:04:04.

There was no bail application and Mr Arustamovs was remanded

:04:05.:04:09.

in custody until 8th January, when he will appear in Newtownards

:04:10.:04:13.

The parents of three teenage boys who were attacked by a gang

:04:14.:04:22.

in Londonderry say their sons have been left terrified.

:04:23.:04:27.

The police are treating the assault, which happened at the city side

:04:28.:04:29.

entrance of the Peace Bridge, as a sectarian hate crime.

:04:30.:04:37.

The boys are all Protestants - one is 13, the others

:04:38.:04:40.

We've spoken to the fathers of two of them who did not

:04:41.:04:45.

One said the boys could have been killed.

:04:46.:04:48.

I think it's a disgrace they can't go to the city side and come and go

:04:49.:04:52.

as they please without being attacked because of their religion.

:04:53.:04:54.

When they were booting him in the face

:04:55.:04:57.

He says to me, Dad, I was very lucky not to get thrown into the Foyle.

:04:58.:05:02.

Hearing that, it could have been a disaster.

:05:03.:05:04.

We could have been looking at a fatality today

:05:05.:05:07.

Victims of the Troubles have met the Secretary of State

:05:08.:05:13.

to push for a resolution of the political disagreement

:05:14.:05:16.

At the recent inter-party talks there was no agreement on issues

:05:17.:05:22.

relating to the legacy of the conflict.

:05:23.:05:25.

After the meeting with Theresa Villiers, the Victims' Forum

:05:26.:05:27.

said they were more optimistic than before.

:05:28.:05:33.

I'm quite confident, more confident that I was a couple of weeks ago,

:05:34.:05:44.

that the Secretary of State will speak to politicians again when they

:05:45.:05:47.

return in the New Year and hopefully with new energy and a will to

:05:48.:05:52.

compromise. There must be compromise in this solution to legacy issues.

:05:53.:05:58.

Politicians are demonstrating willingness to engage. As a

:05:59.:06:03.

government we put some compromises on the table and national security

:06:04.:06:08.

questions, right of appeal to the High Court. We feel we stretched

:06:09.:06:14.

ourselves on that but we are open to consideration of alternatives.

:06:15.:06:17.

The trial has begun of an evangelical preacher accused

:06:18.:06:19.

of making grossly offensive remarks about Islam.

:06:20.:06:21.

Pastor James McConnell denies two charges relating to a sermon he gave

:06:22.:06:24.

More than 100 of his supporters came to the court, including the DUP MP

:06:25.:06:32.

Sammy Wilson and the TUV leader Jim Allister.

:06:33.:06:35.

Football now, and there was a goal fest in tonight's

:06:36.:06:41.

Danske Bank Premiership game between Portadown and Glentoran,

:06:42.:06:45.

The home side opened the scoring with this goal by Gary Twigg,

:06:46.:06:52.

but Glentoran struck back with Marcus Kane scoring

:06:53.:06:56.

Curtis Allen scored his second of the night for Glentoran

:06:57.:07:01.

in the 52nd minute to bring the score to 4-3, but this effort

:07:02.:07:07.

from Twigg sealed the win for the Ports.

:07:08.:07:11.

On BBC Newsline tomorrow we focus on the 51 Syrian refugees

:07:12.:07:15.

who are due to arrive from camps in Lebanon.

:07:16.:07:21.

We talk to others who have already set up home here.

:07:22.:07:24.

They describe the conditions they left behind.

:07:25.:07:32.

It's not a normal life, they kill us, you cannot believe it. Nothing,

:07:33.:07:44.

no electricity, no clean water, that's good food, no milk for them,

:07:45.:07:50.

especially the babies. They are suffering. It is a difficult, hard

:07:51.:07:54.

life for them. You can see more on that on BBC

:07:55.:07:55.

Newsline at 6:30pm tomorrow evening. Tomorrow the Good Morning Ulster

:07:56.:07:58.

programme will be discussing the refugees, and as Britain's Tim

:07:59.:08:00.

Peake prepares for take-off to the International Space Station,

:08:01.:08:02.

an astronaut who has been there is in the studio

:08:03.:08:06.

recalling his experiences. That's on BBC Radio

:08:07.:08:09.

Ulster in the morning. After a cloudy day, let's see

:08:10.:08:12.

if the skies will clear The weather forecast

:08:13.:08:15.

is next with Cecilia Daly. After the cold weather of the

:08:16.:08:31.

weekend it may be pleasant to know this week will be mild, so no frost,

:08:32.:08:36.

temperatures in double figures on most days. Not much sunshine but the

:08:37.:08:42.

breeze will generally be mild but will bring rain at times so we will

:08:43.:08:46.

need to monitor that as the ground is saturated. Nothing too heavy

:08:47.:08:52.

tonight but it will be damp and drizzle later, although by morning

:08:53.:08:57.

some places will have dry up. Some low cloud may linger in the

:08:58.:09:03.

rush-hour, making it foggy on high ground, the main area comes in from

:09:04.:09:06.

the South later in the day. Some drizzle initially but will die out,

:09:07.:09:11.

the breeze will pick up that this is the main wet weather over the

:09:12.:09:15.

southern half of Ireland moving north. Moving into Wales, England,

:09:16.:09:21.

eventually Northern England and there are rain warnings in force for

:09:22.:09:28.

Yorkshire, but much of Scotland will be dry and milder, so there will be

:09:29.:09:32.

a law of the snow covering much of the Scottish Highlands. Wet from

:09:33.:09:37.

late afternoon onwards, heavy bursts of rain accompanied by blustery

:09:38.:09:43.

winds, the rain will die away on Tuesday night, not as a wet on

:09:44.:09:49.

Wednesday with a lot of dry weather and temperatures in low teens. That

:09:50.:09:53.

is the main theme, it will be mild, some rain at times but overall not

:09:54.:10:01.

that heavy. And that's all from me. Good night.

:10:02.:10:03.
