Good evening and welcome to BBC Newsline.

:00:00.:00:08.

Tributes have been paid across the island of Ireland

:00:09.:00:13.

to the broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan, who died today at the age of 77

:00:14.:00:15.

Sir Terry started his broadcasting career on RTE before moving

:00:16.:00:21.

to the BBC where he established himself as a broadcasting legend.

:00:22.:00:26.

Our reporter Lisa McAllister has been taking a look

:00:27.:00:28.

Listen, lads, don't panic, don't panic, look, I'll tell

:00:29.:00:35.

Will you talk amongst yourselves, listeners, for just a moment?

:00:36.:00:42.

With his warm broadcasting style, dry wit and wry reflections on life,

:00:43.:00:46.

over the years Sir Terry attracted a devoted fanbase of millions.

:00:47.:00:52.

And to those who knew him, he was the most special of friends.

:00:53.:00:55.

We went over last Thursday and chatted with the family.

:00:56.:00:57.

It was a very sad day but a very quiet day.

:00:58.:01:01.

There was a great calmness over the family and Terry

:01:02.:01:03.

They phoned me this morning to say he had gone to his heavenly reward

:01:04.:01:12.

and we are all enormously sad really, enormously.

:01:13.:01:16.

But grateful for I have known a true gentleman

:01:17.:01:18.

He started his broadcasting career at RTE before moving

:01:19.:01:23.

across the water and joining the BBC in the late '60s,

:01:24.:01:27.

where he soon became a popular fixture on both radio and TV.

:01:28.:01:31.

But the Limerick man never forgot his roots.

:01:32.:01:34.

He had a great part to play in our being on these shows,

:01:35.:01:40.

the fact that he was Irish and we were Irish.

:01:41.:01:42.

He never forgot where he came from even though I suppose a lot

:01:43.:01:45.

of people just saw him as a presenter in the UK,

:01:46.:01:48.

I think Terry was very aware of his roots.

:01:49.:01:53.

I believe Terry was unique not only as a broadcaster but as a person,

:01:54.:01:57.

because he had the most incredible sense of humour,

:01:58.:02:00.

but he was also a very well read and intelligent man.

:02:01.:02:03.

A tireless charity campaigner, he raised millions of pounds

:02:04.:02:06.

And throughout his career, his laid back manner made it seem

:02:07.:02:11.

as though nothing phased him, even when faced with interviewing

:02:12.:02:13.

The booze is still important, yeah.

:02:14.:02:22.

When asked by the Queen how long he had worked at the BBC,

:02:23.:02:31.

he replied, "Your Majesty, I've never worked here."

:02:32.:02:34.

I've had a loving family, I've had a loving wife.

:02:35.:02:45.

I've had success in the material world.

:02:46.:02:48.

Four prison officers have been injured in an incident involving

:02:49.:03:00.

The Prison Service confirmed a female officer had to receive

:03:01.:03:05.

An investigation into what happened is now underway.

:03:06.:03:09.

A new 20mph speed limit came into force around

:03:10.:03:12.

The zone takes in May Street at the back of City Hall,

:03:13.:03:18.

goes on as far as the Cathedral Quarter before going past the back

:03:19.:03:21.

Drivers have been advised to keep a look out for new signage which has

:03:22.:03:28.

been put in place to mark out the new limits.

:03:29.:03:33.

Sport now and on the opening weekend of Gaelic football's

:03:34.:03:36.

Allianz National Football League, there were wins today for,

:03:37.:03:38.

among others, Monaghan, Tyrone and Derry.

:03:39.:03:41.

Meanwhile Donegal travelled to Newry last night and came away

:03:42.:03:44.

Paddy McBrearty was one of the stars in an impressive win over Down.

:03:45.:03:50.

On the night Ryan McHugh also scored two goals,

:03:51.:03:53.

as Donegal romped to a 17-point win over their out-of-sorts hosts.

:03:54.:04:00.

Now, just time to tell you about a story we'll be bringing

:04:01.:04:03.

Would you know what to do if your child or a child

:04:04.:04:15.

They are more common than you think and they can affect children right

:04:16.:04:20.

And that's coming up this week on BBC Newsline at 6:30pm.

:04:21.:04:27.
